Cop and Army Veteran Killed, Gunman Dead at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Reports Shots Fired & Issues Alert

UPDATE II: BLACKSBURG, Va. (The Blaze/AP) — The Virginia Tech police officer who was gunned down is being identified as a 39-year-old Army veteran and father of five.

The university said late Thursday that the officer was Deriek W. Crouse. He joined the Virginia Tech Police Department on Oct. 27, 2007. That was about six months after 33 people were killed at the school in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Crouse previously worked at a jail and a sheriff’s department.

UPDATE: BLACKSBURG, Va. (The Blaze/AP) – A gunman killed a police officer in a Virginia Tech parking lot Thursday and then apparently shot himself to death nearby in a baffling attack that shook up the campus nearly five years after it was the scene of the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history.

The shooting took place on the same day Virginia Tech officials were in Washington, fighting a government fine over their alleged mishandling of the 2007 bloodbath where 33 people were killed. Before it became clear that the gunman in Thursday’s attack was dead, the school applied the lessons learned during the last tragedy, locking down the campus and using a high-tech alert system to warn students and faculty members to stay indoors.

“In light of the turmoil and trauma and the tragedy suffered by this campus by guns, I can only say words don‘t describe our feelings and they’re elusive at this point in time,” university president Charles Steger said. “Our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer.”

The officer was killed after pulling a driver over in a traffic stop. The gunman – who was not involved in the traffic stop – walked into the parking lot and ambushed the officer. Police did not know what the motive was.

A law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the gunman was dead, but wouldn’t say how he died.

While authorities wouldn’t confirm specific details about the gunman, they released a timeline of events.

At about 12:15 p.m., the officer called in the traffic stop. After a few minutes passed without hearing from the officer, dispatch tried to get in touch with him, but didn’t get a response. About 15 minutes later, police received the first call from a witness who said an officer had been shot at the Cassell Coliseum parking lot and the gunman had fled on foot.

Local, state and federal officials responded immediately. At 1 p.m., an officer saw a suspicious man in a parking lot known as The Cage. The man had a gunshot wound and a gun was nearby. Authorities said they responded to numerous other calls of suspicious activity, but found that there were no other threats and lifted the campus lockdown, about four hours after the initial alerts.

Asked if police were still looking for the shooter, state police Sgt. Robert Carpentieri said: “I think the investigators feel confident that we’ve located the person. I can‘t give you specifics and I don’t want to confirm that but you can kind of read between the lines so I won’t specifically address that question.”

The officer, who wasn’t immediately identified, had served on the campus police force for four years. State police were still investigating whether he had been specifically targeted. The campus force has about 50 officers and 20 full- and part-time security guards.

At the time of the shootings, students were preparing for exams when they were suddenly told to hunker down. Heavily armed officers swarmed the campus as caravans of SWAT vehicles and other police cars with emergency lights flashing patrolled nearby.

“A lot of people, especially toward the beginning were scared,” said Jared Brumfield, a 19-year-old freshman from Culpeper, Va., who was locked in the Squires Student Center.

The Collegiate Times (Virginia Tech’s student newspaper) earlier reported, via Twitter, there may have been two culprits and that one had been apprehended, though the paper then said that the suspect was still at large.

A campus-wide alert told students and faculty to stay inside and lock doors:

The university sent updates about every 30 minutes, regardless of whether they had any new information, school spokesman Mark Owczarski said.

Harry White, 20, a junior physics major, said he was in line for a sandwich at a restaurant in a campus building when he received the text message alert.

White said he didn’t panic, thinking instead about a false alarm about a possible gunman that locked down the campus in August. White used an indoor walkway to go to a computer lab in an adjacent building, where he checked news reports.

“I decided to just check to see how serious it was. I saw it’s actually someone shooting someone, not something false, something that looks like a gun,” White said.

The school was a bit quieter than usual because classes ended Wednesday. About 20,000 of the university’s 30,000 students were on campus when the officer was shot. Exams, set to begin Friday, were postponed.

The shooting came soon after the conclusion of a hearing where Virginia Tech was appealing a $55,000 fine by the U.S. Education Department in connection with the university’s response to the 2007 rampage.

The department said the school violated the law by waiting more than two hours after two students were shot to death in their dorm before sending an email warning. By then, student gunman Seung-Hui Cho was chaining the doors to a classroom building where he killed 30 more people and then himself.

The department said the email was too vague because it mentioned only a “shooting incident,” not the deaths. During testimony Thursday, the university’s police chief, Wendell Flinchum, said there were no immediate signs in the dorm to indicate a threat to the campus. He said the shootings were believed to be an isolated domestic incident and that the shooter had fled.

An administrative judge ended the hearing by asking each side to submit a brief by the end of January. It is unclear when he will rule.

Since the massacre, the school expanded its emergency notification systems. Alerts now go out by electronic message boards in classrooms, by text messages and other methods. Other colleges and universities have put in place similar systems.

Universities are required under the Clery Act to provide warnings in a timely manner and to report the number of crimes on campus.

Andrew Goddard, who has crusaded for stiffer run control laws since his son Colin was wounded in the 2007 shootings, said Virginia Tech’s response seemed substantially better this time.

“It sounds like things moved very, very fast this time as opposed to the time before,” said Goddard, who has a daughter and nephew that go to the school. “That doesn’t surprise me. Virginia Tech really did get the message in the sense that when bad things are happening, you have to ask quickly.”

Monica Borza, a senior majoring in biological studies from Virginia Beach, said in an email to AP that she chose to attend Virginia Tech because she thought she would be able to feel safe there.

“The dedication of the officers today confirmed my decision,” said Borza, who was at the Blacksburg public library when she got a text alert about the shooting.

“Within minutes, all my friends and family checked in with me to make sure that I was safe,” she said. “For the next couple of hours, my phone was constantly going off with text messages and phone calls saying, `Are you okay?’ `Praying for VT!’”

During about a one-hour period on Thursday, the university issued four separate alerts.

Derek O’Dell, a third-year veterinary student at Virginia Tech who was wounded in the 2007 shooting, was shaken.

“It just brings up a lot of bad feelings, bad memories,” said O’Dell, who was at his home a couple of miles from campus at the time of the shootings.

“At first I was just hoping it was a false alarm,” he said. “Then there were reports of two people dead, and the second person shot was in the parking lot where I usually park to go to school so it was kind of surreal.”

Police would not rule out a connection between the shootings and an armed robbery Wednesday in Radford, about 10 miles from Blacksburg. According to media reports, Radford police were looking for a man they considered armed and dangerous after an armed robbery at a local real estate office.

In August, a report of a possible gunman at Virginia Tech set off the longest, most extensive lockdown and search on campus since 2007. No gunman was found, and the school gave the all-clear about five hours after sirens began wailing and students and staff members started receiving warnings.

The system was also put to the test in 2008, when an exploding nail gun cartridge was mistaken for gunfire. Only one dorm was locked down during that emergency, and it reopened two hours later.

What is wrong with you people? Why turn it political? This is a SENSELESS act of violence, and has NOTHING to do with liberals OR conservatives. Instead of blaming people that have nothing to do with this, why not pray for the victims or this atrocious and horrendous development?

No no you are right ppl always try to politicize things. You have to understand though that almost everything in our lives is political though.

We now have more ppl falling as a result of it though! People politicized the first shooting and we get stricter laws in place.

Maybe if people were allowed to arm themselves this wouldnt have happened AGAIN. No its better to disarm law abiding people and expect criminals aka people who do not care about the law to jump on board with following the law.

There’s no such thing as a “senseless act of violence”. All violence has a root-cause. That’s just a phrase the liberals have taught people to use when the reason for the violence makes liberals look bad.

In the end, the liberal philosophy creates corruption, violence, and lawlessness.

I feel sorry that people died today in this act of violence and that the students of Virginia Tech have to go through this again. You say that we are blaming people that have nothing to do with it. I‘m sorry but I think you’re wrong. The people of Virginia, the administration of VT and the politicians are all in part at fault here. If after the first shooting they would have allowed people with concealed carry permits to carry a gun on campus there would have been some Immediate Responders on the seen that would have stopped the shooter before he was able to take his first shot.

We make it “political” because the politicians have made the place where this senseless murder happened into a “gun free zone” meaning that they took away the rights of the people in these areas to defend themselves from harm. I‘ll bet that two days a week you don’t walk by a sign that reads…

What to do in case of armed subjects…
retreat to an inside classroom and stay quiet…

Do you? It is ridiculous that we as a society will issue advice to people that has routinely shown to get people killed. And every time such advice is given it comes from the body politic, that is why these stories become political. I don’t pray for the victims of this horrible tragedy because A) I didn’t know them and I am sure that their families and local community already have that covered and B) they are already dead and their fate has already been decided by a higher power than I. My more pressing concern is keeping acts like this from happening to other people, not worrying about what has already transpired. And the only way that we can attempt to end any cold-blooded killing is to allow citizens the ability to practice their God-given rights and let them defend themselves when they need to. If you call that political then so be it. I see it as common sense.

To all of you “against guns”: the FACT IS that most all crimes committed with a gun, are committed by persons who ARE NOT “Legal Gun Carriers”! Those who ARE responsible and legal gun carriers RARELY ever commit crimes with their “legal weapons”. There are FACTS to prove this. Virginia Tech is liberal like most universities. Their answer to any danger is to hunker down, hide, and lock down until the state does something so you can come out of hiding. Firearms will never be allowed legally on that campus because it means individuals protecting themselves and others will one of those “evil guns”. Liberals want everyone to be lemmings. They want them to be helpless as baby rabbits while they go around with an armed security man. They live in walled communities. They want you to simply die waiting for police to save you. They do not want you armed because they want you helpless so they can do what they wish with you.

No matter what laws are put into place, a criminal will not follow them whether it be from a Liberal or a Conservative. And there is no psych test given to people who are legally qualified to carry, to ensure that some nut job, won’t off his family, because he lost his job and his wife is nagging him about bills.

You look like a real estage agent of an Attorney. Judging by your posts, you display the cerebral capacity of a 19-year old, with a formal education level of a 10th grader. You obviously are bereft of any ratiocination or political knowlege. Your nescience is promulgated, ad nauseam.
therefor you must be a Real Estate agent.
Do you have any comprehension of what ‘inalienable’ or ‘not to be infringed’ denotes?
Let me translate for a politically ignorant liberal; It means ‘Carved in stone’, ‘Cut and Dry’
or my favorite ‘ not to be interpreted by some bleach-blonde real estate bimbo.
Now, get out of here !!!!

I’d hate to be locked down in a classroom just waiting with no way to protect myself. That would be nerve racking, much like hiding in your house waiting for the police while you have a perp running around, only on a smaller scale.

Prayers to the families, hope they get this other person and put them down.

I agree. Sitting in a classroom with no way to defend myself because the government has taken away my right to bear arms in a classroom would be a nightmare for me.

I realize this is counterintuitive, but the best way to make sure this doesn‘t continue to happen is to allow more guns in the hands of the People and more guns in places where they’re not presently allowed.

Where‘s the one place you won’t go fishing? Where you know the fish will bite back.
Where‘s the one place you won’t go hunting? Where you know the animals won’t shoot back.

It’s a proven fact that the chance of gun violence is reduced where would-be criminals know the victims can (and will) shoot back.

I’m never without my concealed carry licensed weapon…. Gun Free zone or not.
I’m from New York (Yeah I know, I almost threw up in my mouth just saying that)
I was worried when I was stopped by a Texas State Trooper 2 weeks ago for switching lanes
without signaling. I was nervous because I had my weapon under the seat of the rental car.
Trooper asked me for my license and registration, then shortly after asked if I had any weapons in the vehicle. I nervously said “Yes” He then asked me why I was a little nervous. I said, I was worried I’d be going to jail because I did not have a Texas CCL…. He laughed and said not to worry, everyone in Texas carries a gun…. Did not need to ask for my NY State CCL, but showed it to him anyways…. Then asked me why I was in Texas. Told him I was checking some areas out prior to my future move to Texas. Can’t wait to live there! He let me go without a ticket…..

I’d rather be judged by a jury or 12 than at my funeral carried by 6.

I do believe that gun safety should be taught to everyone, even if they never plan to own one…Knowing how they operate can, at times, be just as helpful as the gun itself…Do I feel a campus is the place for them?..No, not really…Campus security have enough problems with crimes, they don’t deserve guns thrown in the mix.. If you ask me, lock downs are best in cases like this…It will narrow down places for someone like this to go and allow it to be handled without a building to building search..Unfortunately these kind of crimes will never go away, ever…This isn’t political, 2nd amend. rights, or any other spin…This is a criminal committing a crime. My prayers to all this has effected..

NOT having guns is the reason why idiots feel free to open fire. If ten guns were pointed at the perpetrator, they’d think twice about shooting.

Seems this happened near the campus and not on it.The shooter fled onto the grounds. There is something horribly wrong with the picture though.
I agree cc would help tremendously. It isn’t the state of va thats a problem. Its the feds and school rules. We have other colleges in much more isolated areas who don’t have these problems. They are located in open carry areas.Just about all of virginia [but cities] is open carry. This school has a higher number of out of state and out of country students as well.It seems more liberals attend this school than others in our state.Note this is personal observation and reading.Sorry I don’t have a truly handy reference source for proof of my statement.Normally when I make a comment like that I’m able to back it with identifiable sources.

Run and hide behind locked doors like frightened sheep ready for the slaughter. OR arm yourself and stop acting like cowards. There aren‘t enough police and they can’t be everywhere all the time to protect you. Its not their job to protect you its their job to make arrests and gather evidence (like dead sheeple) at crime scenes to use against suspects.

They should have had armed guards and allowed the faculty to carry handguns after the first instance.

I heard on the news this morning that here in Indiana a State Congressman is introducing legislation that will allow students on State campuses to carry handguns. I think this is a great idea and will reduce the potential for this kind of thing to happen here in Indiana if he can get it passed.
