Volt Production ‘Temporarily Halted,’ Hundreds of Workers Laid Off

General Motors told 1,300 employees at its Detroit-Hamtramck factory that they were being “temporarily laid off” for five weeks as the company halts production of the Chevrolet Volt, the Detroit Free Press reports.
“Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand,” said GM spokesman Chris Lee.
“We needed to maintain proper inventory and make sure that we continued to meet market demand,” he told The Hill in a phone interview.
Employees were told Thursday that production would be halted from March 19 to April 23.
“The Chevrolet Volt, an extended-range electric car, is both a political lightning rod and a symbol of the company’s technological capability,” the Detroit Free Press writes.
“Technological capability” or not, the fact of the matter is Chevrolet sold only 1,023 Volts in the U.S. in February and 1,626 so far this year. Moreover, GM fell short of its initial goal of 10,000 for 2011 and only sold 7,671 Volts.
“GM had planned to expand production of its Volt plug-in hybrid to 60,000 this year, with 45,000 earmarked for the U.S.,” according to the report.
However, this may have been sidetracked when “GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA] spent several weeks trying to explain why two Volts whose batteries were punctured caught on fire after sitting around for at least a week.”
In response to this obvious concern, GM said on Jan. 5 that it would “improve the [Volt's] structure and battery-coolant system” to protect it better against post-collision fires. With that, NHTSA concluded that the Volt was “as safe” as any regular, gasoline-powered vehicle.
Apparently, consumers weren’t convinced and the “exploding battery issue” became the topic of a congressional hearing in January.
“Is the commitment to the American public or is the commitment to clean energy that we are going to get there any way we can?” Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) said in a hearing in the House in January about the Volt’s reported battery fires. “When the market is ready…it won’t have to be subsidized.”
GM believes the federal investigations, repeated criticism from prominent conservatives, and “exaggerated media reports” concerning the battery fires have contributed to the Volt’s poor sales, according to Mlive.
“We did not design the Volt to become a political punching bag and that’s what it’s become,” Akerson told Congress on Jan. 25.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:59pmI can’t believe this also! The US Mint finally cut back on dollar coins after they reached 1.8 billion stored all over the country. The Mint is even renting storage units. They would be stolen if they didn’t weigh so much and no one wants them. They are just going to make them in proof sets so they finally had to lay off gov. workers. That is why it went on so long. Inholf in Oklahoma made a stink about the waste of money and keeping workers that wern’t needed. This is the same problem with the Volt.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 4:39pmPlease, people, stop with the knee-jerk reactions that are no better than what the left does. The Volt was shown as a concept car in 2007. You may recognize that as the year before Obama was elected, and two years before he was president. The Volt was in the works for years before Obama was even heard of. It was not mandated by the federal government in the bailout. While buyers receive large subsidies from the government, any vehicle meeting the criteria get the same subsidy, and there are many more out there for other “green” vehicles. It IS wrong to force us to help pay for someone to buy their car, but that is not the fault of the Volt or GM.
As to the car itself, it is brilliant technology. I’m no greenie, but I am a car guy. I’m fine with my V8 engine, but many people want what hybrids offer, and the Volt gives them that in spades. Just as with Toyota’s Prius, the Volt will lose money at first, but as the technology evolves and it amortized over more vehicles, the price will come down and get even better, just as it did with the Prius. Regardless if you buy the BS about global warming or not, there is a large market for “green” vehicles, and GM needed their own Prius to stay competitive and to continue to meet ever-stricter government regulations.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 4:52pmAs to the fires, read the NHTSA report: http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/2012/NHTSA+Statement+on+Conclusion+of+Chevy+Volt+Investigation
They concluded the Volt is no more likely to catch fire after a crash than a gas vehicle. They failed to follow their standard procedure and drain the battery in the crash-tested Volt, as they would the gas tank in a crash-tested gas car. Further, it was GM’s over-cautious engineering of the coolant for the battery that actually caused the fire that did result. Had they left it to be air-cooled, their might not have ever been a fire, but they took it a step further and battery’s liquid cooling caused the incident.
Look, I’m for the free market, and am dead set against bailouts (government takeovers) like what they did to GM and Chrysler. I will NOT buy a new GM until the govt is out of their business (I hope that happens). But when we (as the right) collectively bash something without all the facts, we are playing into the hands of the left, and we have lowered ourselves to their level.
I’m a huge fan of Glenn and appreciate all he does, but there are a few issues that he uses to knock the left over the head where he just scratches the surface and does us all a disservice. The Volt is one of them. I know Glenn is too busy to really delve into the facts surrounding the Volt, but we shouldn’t be using talking points unless we are clear on all the facts surrounding them. It only makes us, and our cause, look bad.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 5:22pmSome other odds and ends from the mess I’ve seen in this thread…
The Volt is a plug-in hybrid. That means when you run out of juice after 40 miles or so, a gas motor turns on to charge the batteries. It can also help power the wheels in extreme stress situations. In other words, the Volt has as much or more of a range as any car you’re likely to have in your garage. This solves one of the massive problems with EVs, the terrible range. The Nissan Leaf is pure electric, so when you’re out of juice, you’re walking. So stop saying “a car that can’t get across town and back” or stuff to that effect.
GE is not forcing their employees to buy Volts. The company is buying them and and their employees get to use them. Do you get to choose the car you drive for your company? It IS another example of crony capitalism/socialism, but they are not forcing employees to buy any car.
And I want to repeat one thing so you really get it: The Volt was not mandated or funded by the government. The “bailout” gave the govt extraordinary power over GM, but the Volt was already in place, as were subsidies. Stop blaming the car or GM for the crap our govt does.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:13pmObama doesn’t care about the Volt! His numbers are going threw the roof with Birth Control Moms coming over to his side – $30 a month is enough to get even the most conservative mom to sell out!
Husbands – check with your wife – she is now a closest Obama supporter. I thought Flowers and a could of dinners did it. Never thought about filling the trunk of my car with BC Pills.
Obama is a Genius!

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:18pmI use to have two classic Muscle Cars – I drive a V8 Sport Utility – every time I see on of these Volts or Hybrids – I drop it down in to low and hit the gas – I burn more gas in 100 yards in 10 sec than they save in a year.

LMAO! I have the F-150 Platinum with a 411hp 6.2l engine. Sound from the pipe is awesome under acceleration. I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago to a Prius at a red light. Cost me $10 in gas for the hundred yards, but was worth it.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 5:52pmDarn right Trolltrainer. He laughed, I laughed, it was a rollicking good time.
Great to still live in a free (for now) country, eh, Trolltrainer? I can choose to drive a high performance vehicle that gets bad gas mileage, and laugh with someone driving a golf cart that gets great mileage.
Only in America! Enjoy while you can.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 7:02pmHey Banter. Great idea.I don’t know why I did not come up with it. Put all the liberal treehuggers in golf carts. They are electric, and also they don’t catch on fire either. Good thinking.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 4:58pmSo what this means is that they built too many and no one is buying them. Interesting, I wonder how long before every government vehicle will be a Chevy Volt? Kind of reminds me of the ‘80’s, every government vehicle was a “K” car from Chrystler or a Dodge Pickup. We will never see our money back from the Auto bailout.

Report Post »GE? Wow imagine that. I would like to know how many were either purchased by the federal government, or by local governments via grants? I am guessing LOTS, well ‘lots’ relative to the number sold.
