Former ACORN Official Condemns Voters’ Spontaneous Pledge of Allegiance (Updated)

At a debate sponsored by the Illinois League of Women Voters between Democratic incumbent Rep. Melissa Bean, GOP challenger Joe Walsh and Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer Wednesday, the audience loudly objected when the moderator, Kathy Tate-Bradish, insisted on proceeding without reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.  In the end, she didn’t stand a chance against the 300-member audience. The camera captures Republican Joe Walsh’s reaction:

Ms. Tate-Bradish reportedly scolded the crowd after the pledge ended, blaming the outburst on the Republican candidate.  The LWV executive director, Jan Czarnik, also condemned the Pledge’s recitation, telling the local news, “It’s a phony patriotism issue is what it is,” she said. “[Republicans] must think it helps their campaign.”

Both LWV have been active members of the progressive movement.  Ms. Tate-Bradish was an active supporter of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and even hosted campaign events for the then-Senator in her own home.

Ms. Czarnik is a former ACORN Project Vote worker and has been involved in the progressive People for the American Way, but as blogger Jeff Dunetz notes, these former affiliations would surely in no way lead her to unfairly criticize a Republican candidate, right?

Ms. Tate-Bradish told the Daily Herald that she stood by her handling of the Pledge request.  “It‘s pretty patriotic to run forums in election seasons where every candidate can be heard and they’re not stomped on,” she said.

One man who attended the debate, an Island Lake resident and U.S. Air Force veteran named Joseph Ptak, said Friday that he had asked for the Pledge to be recited at the debate, calling it a “proper way to begin the event that was in a high school and had student participation.”  According to Ptak, there were many veterans in the audience that evening and he objects to Czarnik questioning his sincerity.

“I’m a Joe Walsh supporter, but first and foremost I’m an American,” Ptak said.

Update: New video has surfaced which captures the spontaneous pledge, followed by a scolding from the debate moderator for the audience’s “disrespect.” The moderator goes on to accuse the crowd of having planned to disrupt the debate before it began, a claim met with boos from the audience:

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931), a Baptist minister, a Christian socialist, and the cousin of socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850–1898). The original “Pledge of Allegiance” was published in the September 8 issue of the popular children‘s magazine The Youth’s Companion as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. The event was conceived and promoted by James B. Upham, a marketer for the magazine, in a campaign to sell flags to public schools and magazines to students while instilling the idea of American nationalism in them.

Bellamy’s original Pledge read as follows:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The pledge was supposed to be quick and to the point. Bellamy designed it to be recited in 15 seconds. As a socialist, he had initially also considered using the words equality and fraternity but decided against it – knowing that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans.

      Okay, here’s why:

In 1923 and 1924 the National Flag Conference, under the ‘leadership of the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution, changed the Pledge’s words, ‘my Flag,‘ to ’the Flag of the United States of America.’ Bellamy disliked this change, but his protest was ignored.

In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, ‘under God,’ to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer.

Bellamy’s granddaughter said he also would have resented this second change. He had been pressured into leaving his church in 1891 because of his socialist sermons.

Some prolife advocates recite the following slightly revised Pledge: ‘I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, born and unborn.’

I applaud the fact that a socialist was able to make money in this capitalist society off of the idea of making an American flag. Strange how socialist denegrade the the capitalist system and push for change only after they are members of the uber rich society. As far as the pledge to the flag, every political meeting I have ever been at always recites the pledge first.

Well, thank you for that snipet 13.

You know, even in socialism people get divided into classes, and communism is no exception. Most Americans were taught that Russians were all communist, which is incorrect.

To be invited into the communist party in Russia/USSR, you had to be of value to the state (CONTROLLABLE). Union members, managers, teachers, government workers were invited to be a part of the party, however farmers, self-employed, and small non-union workers were not allowed and even considered traitors simply because they were independent and self-sufficient and did not rely on the state.

Francis Bellamy may be rolling over in his grave. If he would object to God being added to the pledge he created, then he was a fraud, and lived a fraudulent life. You can’t be a man of God AND object to his praise.

Socialism, true socialism does not exist under a state or a flag. Its in the hearts of the individuals, its a lifestyle. When you have no choice in the matter (STATE), its not freedom, its not choice, and there is nothing friendly in Tyranny.

Socialism and communism fails the masses and has failed everywhere it has been tried. It always flies under the banner of eqaulity and fairness, but look at the examples of NAZI Germany, RUSSIA, and China where millions were murdered or vanished overnight. China had a opium problem and its policies of fairness and equality put bullets in the heads of the problem. Fairness and equality are covers for death and subjugation. Evil always cries out about unfairness and inequalities until evil is in power, then they claim to be fair and equal…in murdering.

So when I see that Francis Bellamy’s pledge has been Christianized and adored by the masses, and it makes Francis Bellamy roll over in his grave because it was not his true intent to have it used this way, it brings joy to my heart. And if Francis Bellamy was a true servant of Jehova, yes that one, he’d share my joy too.

Throughout recent American history progressive/socialist/communist ne’er do wells have attempted to steal our country and our freedoms out from under us from within. Each time America wakes up in the last chapter and crushes them and their statist enslavement agenda, banishing them to the dark corners they crawled out of. And several times in the worlds history the enemies of the American People have found one fact – we get rialed up enough and we can make the world change greatly.

Sadly, that “phoney patriotism” was about a flag that many people died for to ensure freedom both here and abroad. And ironically, the League was started to educate women in political matters so they would vote wisely. The Brits were ahead of us, granting women over the age of 30 the right to vote in 1918. U.S. women obtained the right in 1920. Since then, the freedoms that we all enjoy have been symbolized by that flag she “disrespected”. What irony.

Just a bit of history. There is no such thing as a “Progressive.“ Nor is there any such thing as ”The Progressive Movement.” Back in the 1930′s, ‘40s and ’50s, when the Communists realized that the American people were on to them and were rejecting them and everything they stood for, a group of them tried to confuse people by calling themselves “Progressives.” It didn’t work then. It won’t work now. Please pass this along to everyone, to make people aware, and PLEASE do not dignify this so-called movement by using the label they are trying to popularize.

      To Dominke

I’m sorry, I must respectfully disagree. I do not believe the League of Women Voters is a group of “liberal democrats that want a socialist government” as you stated in your post. This year, the League is celebrating the 90th anniversary of women being given the right to vote. It wasn’t an easy victory.

One thing that is important is the people who are conservative need to join the group and make their voices heard. Do I always agree with League positions? No, I don’t. Do I agree that the moderator of this particular debate was right in what she said? No, I don’t.

Do I believe that the members of the League of Women Voters are traitors? No, and I am very concerned about the quick labeling of those who refuse to say the Pledge of Allegiance as traitors. As much as I love the Pledge, I am always aware that it is a pledge that was designed for a group similar to the Boy Scouts and is not a citizenship oath. It is also not a test of loyality or patriotism. However, I do believe that not allowing the audience to say the Pledge was a violation of the freedom of speech clause of the First Amendment and I am glad they defied her.

However, I also didn’t confine my thoughts about this matter to this board or thread. My letter politely expressing my concerns about this issue went out this morning to the National Office of the League of Women Voters. It was addressed to

      Ms. Elizabeth MacNamara, President
League of Women Voters National Office
      1730 M Street, Suite 1000
      Washington, D.C. 20036-4508

My letter to the State LWV Chapter will follow, I just haven’t written that cover letter yet. And I’d like to point out that when we contact our Congressional representatives, emails and phone calls are fine and much quicker, but they estimate that when they get an actual letter (not a form letter) in the regular mail as representing a group of ten who are of the same opinion. I don’t know if the League does this method of counting or not, but rest assured, they will hear from me, and I imagine alot of other people about this issue.

The Hostess for the event, when asked about saying the Pledge, could have said, “You know what? Yes, we can say it before we begin. Will everyone rise and say it with me?”

But no…the woman challenged it. Even with something like this people took it over and said the Pledge.

W4JLE – Thank you for letting us in on what happened after. Imagine…..SHE was disrespected! Another prime example of how RESPECT is only channeled ONE way…..toward THEM. The progressives INCLUDING the League of Women Voters, have demonstrated time after time that they not only have no respect for hard working, tax paying AMERICANS, but they have great disdain for them. The progressives HATE us because they HATE America……AND WE ARE AMERICA!!!

Notice she said “I have nothing FOR or AGAINST the Pledge of Alligiance.
      What does this mean?
Normally when someone talks about anything in this way it simply doesn’t mean anything to them.
For instance “I have nothing FOR or AGAINST = This means NOTHING to me.
      Correct?

The best part is that it was videotaped so we get to see what happened first hand! Despite the attempt to put Progressive spin on it, it is pretty clear from the video what happened. Video tape (and its successors) has become the worst enemy of the Socialistic/Progressive movement!

I would say this is not insincere but the opposite. The audience did not recite the pledge just because it is wholly apropriate in such a setting, but because this woman not only tried to deny them the right to do so but tried to scold them for wanting to. This recitation may have been spontaneous but I can assure you, their patriotism was not.

She was disrespected by the crowd reciting the PLEDGE?!?!?
Then scolded them as if they were bad children? They should have boo’d her off the stage! We can not tolerate these progressives and their disdain for our traditions of freedom!!

If you’re suprised by that, imagine what our children have to deal with in our schools. They get ridiculed for being patriotic about such issues and would be suspended as a troublemaker for doing the same thing. They get sent home in California if the wear a flag shirt, They are ridiculed when they present, “opposing”, traditional american views. These progressives are trying to remove god and country from our schools, homes, and our lives. These people are not only irritating, they are traitors to the United States of America. Expose and remove them all from any and all public positions and offices. This lady didn’t represent anyone but herself and the “poeple are too stupid to understand” party of communists/marxist would be overlords.

I pledge allegiance to the Republic, for which our flag stands. One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

(While “under God” wasn’t in the original Pledge, it is certainly a central tenet of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.)

My Hat is off to those Americans who took the initiative to stand and cite to pledge. The pledge is to GOD inspired American values that I so dearly love and when I see Americans at their best like in this instance I just well up inside with hope for this country. This lady continued to talk down to the folks in such a condesending way that was more than what was called for, she in good grace should have moved forward instead of claiming to be disrespected. The People have Spoken and will continue to speak on November 2nd and beyond. God Bless America the land that I love. Stand beside her now!!!!
