Wall Street ‘Heroes’ to Hold ‘Occupy a Desk American Job Fest’ at Zuccotti Park

Two months after Occupy Wall Street set up its first tent, two Manhattan small business owners — dubbed “the biggest heroes on Wall Street” by Business Insider — decided to protest the protests, heading down to Zuccotti park donning signs that read, “Occupy a Desk” and “Get a Job.”
Now, those two men — brothers Derek and John Tabacco — are organizing a full-fledged jobs fair in Zuccotti park exclusively for the Occupiers. According to Mediaite, the “Occupy A Desk American Job Fest” is slated for Monday, December 12, from noon until 4:00 p.m.
So far 12 companies with at least 40 job openings are confirmed to take part, including Intermedia Group, Network Placements, and Ambit Energy.
Mediaite adds:
“During our last counter protest, we heard repeatedly from Occupy Wall Street that they couldn’t find a job,” Derek Tabacco says, in explaining the impetus behind the job fair. “We thought with the holiday season upon us, what better gift to give someone than a much-needed job.”
The brothers say that there will be proper tables set up, and candidates will be able to give resumes to Human Resource representatives, as well as take part in pre-interviews. Derek Tabacco tells Mediaite that if businesses would like to get involved in the job fair, they can contact him or his brother, either through the movement’s website or via Twitter. And he promises, to both the potential job-seekers and employers, that this is a sincere event.
“Our dad was an NYPD officer, our mom was a housewife highly focused on community and charity,” he said. “We weren’t brought up to be antagonistic. We want to bring a positive message to the park. We welcome anyone to come by and check out the fair.”
Below is an interview with the Tabacco brothers from back in November:
Despite their desire to help now, though, the website Salon has questioned the Tabacco brothers in the past.
For example, the site reminds readers that Derek once appeared on the Bravo reality TV show “Millionaire Matchmaker.” And in addition to anti-OWS activists, the two brothers seem to be jacks of all trades:
But it turns out the Tabacco brothers have a long and sometimes checkered history of publicity-seeking and relentless self-promotion — and their claim that 50 local businessmen are supporting the anti-Occupy protest is entirely unsubstantiated.
Besides owning a finance company called LocateStock in lower Manhattan, John Tabacco is a Fox News contributor, a failed talk radio host, an unsuccessful city council candidate from Staten Island, and a onetime participant in the VH1 show “My Coolest Years.” An endorsement John Tabacco received in his city council campaign was later alleged to have been part of a pay-to-play deal. Derek Tabacco, for his part, is the CEO of what appears to be a defunct social network company for sports fans.
Below is a clip of Tabacco in action during his appearance on The Millionaire Matchmaker. The entertainment value alone makes it worth a peek. Tabacco makes his appearance at the beginning of the clip and then again at around the 7:00 mark. Watch as he woos his date:
But while entertaining, does the Tabaccos’ past matter though?

Posted on December 10, 2011 at 1:11pmI like how the OWSers always complain they can never find a job. I’ve worked at Kohls for over a year now, and I know from my experience there, they hire new help constantly. New workers come in every month, and much much more during the holiday season, which they do not cut after Christmas. In my mind, seeing the way one business works, the reason these people don‘t have work is because they don’t want to go out and look for it. But perhaps the pay of businesses such as these, as Kohls does not schedule over 35 hours per week are below the standards of the protesters, who would rather do nothing and be handed thing free.

The 99% do not get it. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW!
90% of Americans work
9% of Americans are on unemployment because they worked (and should be looking to work again!)
1% of Americans do neither, they Occupy and demand benefits.
What happend to John Kennedy’s statement: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”
No country has ever succeeded by taxing and spending itself into prosperity.

15% of Americans are not on welfare because it expired, and either are unemployed, partially employed, or have given up looking out of despair for jobs
1% of America falls into none of the above categories because they believe they can get something for nothing and are demanding it from the Government.

Report Post »You just don’t get it. IT IS NOT COMPASSIONATE TO JUST GIVE A LIVING TO SOMEONE….CUZ THEN NO ONE WILL DO ANYTHING. Capitalism has brought wages out of the mire not a union. Think about the hundreds of poor teens in the UK industrial rev (1850′s) getting a really small wage. w/o Cap. they would simply not exist. Check the pop growth in that era. Sure it was bad cuz before that it was oblivion. It was hugely better w/o unions and improved as civ, got better. As an entrepreneur you can’t pay more than the market will allow. Get the gov out of it and 1 % growth in our economy will change to 10% like China. Or maybe more. I am a compassionate conservative and I pray for this regularly….and I pray for you and your ilk. When it fails and you have a great job with a huge wage but unfortunately no paycheck you may come to my door for food and water.

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 7:20amI like this counter-measure and I hope more employers will participate. It will be telling to see how the OWS protesters respond to this job fair. Level of interest and willingness to interview for a job will weed out those who really understand and are sincere about what they have been “protesting.” The chaff will be left exposed as either pure rabble rousers or true marxists/communists/socialists that really despise capitalism and want to destroy the country from the inside out.

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 7:34amSo it takes a protest to get companies to hire people instead of laying them off. I just have one question? Do these jobs pay enough so we can have mothers or fathers for that matter only have to work one job to support the family, or both parents working 2 jobs and no one home to raise the kids right?
You wonder why or society has fallen so far. When i was raised my fathers on job, paid enough so my mother could stay home and raise her children. thats almost impossible to do these days. Thank God my father was in a union where they could negotiate a fair wage to allow this to happen.
Our country will continue down this road until these problems are addressed. All the republicorp party wants is let the market decide how much you should get paid. This is a race to the bottom and corporations are leading us down this path in the name of profits and Ceo salaries. And you call yourselves the family values and compassionate conservative party. my arse you are….

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 8:12amREALINDEPENDENT, after reading your post I am sitting here scratching my head and wondering just deep do you keep your head imbedded inside your fourth point of contact. Back when I was a child my father had a job that allowed my mom to stay at home too. As we three children got older, my mom decided to go back to work and was part of a local success story at getting a credit union started, off the ground, and it is now a state wide organization. The more both worked, the more they noticed and expressed to us how taxes had risen to the point that they would both have to remain at work to maintain their small niche in the middle class. Local city, county, state, and federal tax increases have done more to keep both adult family members actively being co-bread winners. Such taxes on businesses have over the decades driven up the prices of goods and services as well. The danger to families comes more from self centered, power hungry politicians who continually piss away mountains of tax payer funds with impunity.. If you get these characters off all of our collective backs the country and families will be in far better shape.

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 11:21amrealindependent perhaps if the effective tax rate (property, income, sales etc)for the middle class wasn’t 50% , most families could eliminate the second income, that is primarily going to pay the familiys tax burden

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 2:21pmREALINDEPENDANT, I don’t at all believe most families have two parents working because of low wages. In my humble opinion, most families wish to live above their means requiring both parents to work to make ends meet. I know our family could live on one income if we wanted to but we wouldn’t have many of the luxuries we enjoy today (nice home, new cars, cell phones, internet, cable tv, etc.). I’m not sure how old you are but back in 1980 when I was a child the average home was 1,740 sf and in 2010 the average home is 2,392 sf (from census dot gov). That alone is likely one of the biggest factors requiring two wage earners for a family. With a larger home comes higher mortgages, taxes, and utilities.
Fortunately, we live in the greatest country on Earth and each family gets to decide what their top priorities are. If you want to have a parent stay at home to raise the children then you will have to live on one income. That’s your choice. I shouldn’t have to supplement you so you can have your cake and eat it too.
Also, the businesses participating with the job fair are most likely supporters of OWS movement or actually need to hire workers and figure starting with a group of educated but unemployed people is a good idea. Either way, good for them.

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 6:28pmRealindependent: Wow. I’m sorry you are this confused. Profit equals prosperity. If there were no profits there would be no companies nor any jobs which ultimately would lead to communism. Yes there are some corrupt and greedy CEO’s however the vast majority are not. Take Target, I believe there CEO was paid $5 million salary. He employs roughly 80,000 employees worldwide who are dependent on him to make the right decisions so they can keep their jobs. Albert Pujols gets $25 million a year to hit a baseball which the Angels employ 300 people if you count their minor league operations. Who is more valuable to society. Why are the CEO’s always the ones to be critisized. Why aren’t people critisizing athletes and Hollyweirds. How about Oprah who made $250 million one year.

Posted on December 9, 2011 at 6:32pmAlso, profits equals prosperity for middle class in another way. It‘s called 401 k’s and investment portfolios. Many middle class people prosper when these companies make profits. Geez, they might even have a company matching program if you purchase company stock. Wow!

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 11:05pmWho gives a rat’s patoot who they are? If they entice companies to supply HR reps to do interviews for real jobs, that’s all that matters. Dollars to donuts, they won’t get many, if any, takers. These malcontents don’t want work, they want hand-outs. Half of them are probably collecting unemployment while protesting about the lack of jobs. This will be interesting.
