Wall Street Journal: GBTV Already Has More Subscribers Than Oprah’s Network Has Viewers

Many people thought Glenn Beck might have been a little bit crazy (little bit?) to leave the safety and support of traditional cable television to launch his internet-based GBTV enterprise. But the news from the Wall Street Journal today may cause even the critics some pause.
Beck’s GBTV broadcast will launch at 5PM ET this afternoon, complete with an all-new chalkboard!
The complete Wall Street Journal article, well worth reading, is restricted to subscribers, but here is one nugget :
Because Mr. Beck owns the show and the network, he could make substantially more than the $2.5 million salary he got each year at Fox. GBTV is on track to take in more than $20 million in revenue in its debut year, according to a person close to the company.
The television industry will be watching closely to see whether the TV host can preserve his popularity while migrating to the Web, where efforts to get consumers to pay to watch online-only channels are just beginning.
When Mr. Beck announced GBTV in June, the network had 80,000 subscribers. In the months since, GBTV subscribers have swelled to more than 230,000, according to people close to the network, even though Mr. Beck‘s show hasn’t yet begun.
The audience is far less than the more than 2.2 million daily viewers his program on Fox drew, on average, over its 27-month run, which ended in June after clashes with the network’s management.
But it is more than the average 156,000 people who were watching the Oprah Winfrey Network in June.
One writer at Forbes has looked at the numbers and done a little extrapolation:
Analyst Rich Greenfield of BTIG Research estimates that GBTV is already generating revenues of $27 million a year from subscription fees by monetizing a mere 1 percent of the total audience for his Fox show, his radio show, his websites (glennbeck.com and theblaze.com) and other outlets. Greenfield envisions Beck increasing that conversion rate to 5 percent, yielding a subscriber base of over 1 million. In that scenario, extrapolating from Greenfield’s current run rate estimate of $27 million, GBTV would be generating $135 million in subscription revenues.
The Forbes writer, Jeff Bercovici, acknowledges that those estimates might be optimistic. But he posits that Beck is on course to the $100 million dollar earnings barrier “sooner than later” when you consider all of his media endeavors.
Deadline New York is running with a headline reading, “Analyst: Media Execs ‘Should Be Very Afraid’ of Glenn Beck’s Web TV Launch.”
Mediate looks at it this way:
While Beck’s online venture is still relatively new, it’ll continue to be interesting to observe the different trajectories GBTV and OWN take as they forge their way. Here are two networks, albeit on different platforms, begun by two individuals who are themselves highly recognizable mega-brands. One is gradually building an audience as another is still hoping to find its place on television, and both depend highly on the trust viewers place on their respective founding personalities. Could you imagine what an episode devoted to Beck’s “favorite things” might pan out? Sales of chalk could go through the roof.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:07pmThe problem with the article is very blatantly simple: The number of subscribers does not equate to the number of viewers.
Some subscribers may not actually watch the show, but may only listen to radio podcasts. You also have multiple person households that may watch the show, but still be only one subscriber.
230,000, if all watched the show, and the average household is four people, and all watched, would be 920,000 viewers, not 230,000 viewers.
However, at the cost of 4.95 a month, that is 13.662 million in revenue per year. There are many that pay the full amount of 9.95 per month, in order to get the podcasts or live radio broadcast with video.
Glenn will make money at this, as he has nowhere to go but up.

Indeed! I think it is completely laughable that the antique TV media corps are sweating bullets right now, given that they see a massive rout in their viewership, rejecting their elitist-sponsered propaganda garbage in leu of REAL CONTENT that they are willing to PURCHASE from GBTV!
<<loyal Beckster here! I dont mind paying for the TRUTH. Besides, I unplugged my Direct TV 4 years ago and have absolute control of my media via the internet. I was waiting for this day, for TRUTH to come in this form, as a service on the internet. Now, I get Glenn Beck in my morning drive to work (via radio), my Blaze (during the day), and my GBTV in the evenings.
Sorry ABC, NBC, CBS — you've been rejected 5 years ago! You push garbage and it shows — as you are loosing your viewership in droves. Even if you get on the internet, you would be lucky to have a couple of posters on your boards for each new garbage left-leaning propaganda piece (like Politico) that you create.
IT IS SO HILARIOUS! These media moguls are rotting slowly — withering away. Their garbage cannot be subsidized at ANY price. Now have a close listen to their viewership….

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:35pmThere’s a lot more to it than just subscriptions to GBTV (dot) com. You have to keep in mind, too, that Mercury Radio Arts is Glenn’s empire — GBTV is just one of its holdings/entities. There’s also revenues which are generated 1. via TheBlaze (dot) com, 2. via Mercury Ink for print/books/educational materials, 3. via 1791 (dot) com for clothing, 4. via Markdown (dot) com for deals/bargains, plus 5. his radio program continues to gain more listeners (and advertisers) each day. Who knows what else Glenn’s got up his sleeve? I’m a proud supporter from the days of being an Insider Extreme member. I’ve learned and read more about American history/people/events and about global figures/history/events in the last four years than I ever knew. To me and for my posterity, GBTV is well worth any fee he could ask for. I wish Glenn and all the crew @ Mercury all the best, keep telling the truth, and keep creating new and invigorating ideas and businesses. All the best, a loyal Insider/GBTV Extreme member.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 2:05pmThe real comparison is that more people are paying for a single channel, GBTV, than are tuning in for free to watch OWN. No one is paying for OWN, it’s included in the 300+ channels you get when you subscribe to cable/satellite. The real problems are that Oprah had a broadcast audience, where people could watch her show for free, they are not the cable audience, she hasn’t made made OWN programming narrowcast, and the Discovery Health viewers are not her left-wing pals. She missed the mark by semi-launching on 1-1-11 and had a huge opportunity to make today (or next Monday) when people were looking for her new season, her premiere. GBTV is the way the in depth viewer is headed.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 2:18pmIn the old days…you know…print media…newspapers and magazines. There was this organization called the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) that was charged with the duty of verification/validation of the “readership” / “subscribers” numbers of those forms of media. The problem was, in markets where there were large competing companies, the audits were must more contentious as the papers would claim greater subscribers, and then greater readership. At least they had a physical product at some point sold to someone. When print media started to use the metric “readership” the value of the numbers seemed questionable at best.
How many people read a newspaper if left in a coffee shop, or a doctor’s office waiting room? How many read it in a household? Virtually impossible to know for sure!
How many times will there be more than one viewer per internet connection? How many legal/illegal redistributions will occur? Who knows. But, one thing is for sure…the internet is an anywhere, anytime, and almost anyway media. Watch on your computer, your desktop or laptop. Watch on your cell phone. Pop out your tablet and watch in your PJs, your car, on the train, subways, yes, even in church.
There are ways to beat the auditors/bean counters, but the truth always has a way of getting out of the bottle and intellegent people tend to know when they are being lied to, and when they are being manipulated. TO that end…MSNBC, ABC, CNN, FOX, PBS be afraid, be very af

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 2:43pmthe core problem is that most people don’t want to 1. pay for something they used to get for free. 2. watch television on their computer screens. people like watching a clip on their computer, or a five minute youtube video, butfor an extended viewing experience, the family won’t huddle around your 15″ laptop screen. i can stream video to my television from my computer, but alot of people can’t, plus its not as easy as turning on channel 52 or whatever. as other posters mentioned, i have no doubt he will profit, he has a dozen different revenue streams, and a dedicated audience, it will always add up to a nice payday for him. he could be doing a ham radio show and make millions.

Clive, you have not been paying attention.
1. It did not used to be free. I had to pay for my cable that provided FOX.
2. It’s very easy and inexpensive to view internet content on the screen of your choice. And most TV watchers will be doing just that, in the very near future.
The only “core Problem” is that the core beliefs of the left are being rejected by more and more informed people every day.

Posted on September 13, 2011 at 12:24amThe comparison to Oprah is a little lame. Her show was the top rated show in American history, with a viewership 10 times Becks even at his peak. You know, before he lost his advertisers and even FOX -FOX! – disassociated themselves from him.
But seriously folks, how have you survived without your daily dose of paranoia and hate? Seriously, without Beck how do you know who to hate and fear?
I’ll save you the money. Everybody who is not a white, Christian TP member is trying to destroy our country and is a personal threat to your freedom and, indeed, your life.
For half what Beck charges, five bucks a month, I’ll explain to you why you should be afraid, and tell you about all of the people who are absolute evil, like Hitler, and who want to destroy you. And, for an additional fee, I’ll give you some tips on surviving the Apocalypse (with seeds to grow food from for example). For a lot less money out of pocket, I’ll feed your paranoia, give you different people to hate and fear each week, convince you that the world is about to end, and, for pennies per day, help you survive the end of times.

Thanks for the offer. I must say it is tempting, but………I think I’ll stick with watching Glenn.
And just to make it clear, one need not spend $10.00 a month as you like to spew forth.
For the basic package, which is what I have, it comes to only $4.16 a month. If you happened to be a smoker, one less cigarette a day would pay for your subscription, and you would even end up a couple bucks richer at the end of the month.
But anyway, JZS, just what is it that you are trying to accomplish with posts such as this last one?
Mocking and belittling your target audience is no way to gain converts. Quite the contrary.
But by all means, keep it up. The more we see the bitterness and vileness of the left, the more we know we are Right.

I watched Beck as he gave us all the lessons of our history as were written, not as the twisters have distorted our true history and are trying to destroy our great country(Oba n Co’). As he taught on Fox and radio, those who tuned in got the truth of what these ‘Traitors’ here and aboard are trying to do and exposeing them for what they are, traitors. And as traitors to our great USA,they used to hang them in public. Now they are adorded by millions and Islam is just a peaceful loving ism that only wants peace with us and the world. The more you tell the lies the more it is accepted as truth. The bed-wetting newscasters(you know them) are still twisting the truth and they know there time is short, even though.they still believe the lie along with those who watch them. Like i said, thank you Glenn n Co for all you do at this critical time in history, God bless. And may God open the minds to the truth and His love. One ? we all must answer for ourselves is: Who was this Jesus of Nazareth? Was He a liar,a lunitic, or was he Lord and Savior? The one question we all must answer. The prophets of the Bible are batting 1′000%.Try Matthew 24 for starters then Joel. Our founders knew the truth. And Glenn taught us of these great, humble men and women who stood for the truth. Shalom, A Christian Patriot.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:42pmMe too! I’m anxious for the first show today; so happy the news is positive for Glenn and love the face that he seems to be out-gunning Oprah — what a huge step for Glenn!!!

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:43pmI watched one full episode of the five. Then the next day I watched my paint dry for 45 minutes. I think I learned more from the paint drying. I bought a Sony BD that could stream Netflix a few years back. They have updated their stream but I still don’t see GBTV. Any ideas from you blazers without buying an addtional Roku?

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 3:01pmThe Five was an excellent substitute for the Glenn Beck program. I agree Beckel is a negative distraction. I know where my focus will be this evening at 5:00: GBTV.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 3:11pmI can’t listen more than 15 seconds Beckel, Colmes, Williams, and the rest of deep throats Progressive programed speakers at Fox. They will find the cost of the leftist garbage too high. Like me, others agree on that is so terrible boring!!! Is this because the Soros, Hugo Chavez boyfriend at the FCC and fairness doctrine and all of this idiotic revolution? Very destructive move for freedom!!!

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:58pmSigned up for GBTV months ago. Am really looking forward to today!! Have never had any trouble with my log in, but I hope you that have get them fixed soon. Just can’t take the 5. Bob Beckel is just too brain washed and reverts to progressive clichés too much to watch.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:04pmThis will be a big deal. I hope the servers can handle it. We watch his radio show on the Roku —works and streams great for about an hour then goes “Loading please wait” and it never comes back.
If the servers cannot handle the streaming then this will be a big fail. I sure hope it works…miss Glen.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:18pmI have a very powerful laptop and a great DSL connection. The GBTV streams last 15 to 20 minutes, then stop and never starts again. I have to restart the connection at least 10 times to get through it. I have posted this problem with their customer support, but nothing so far. Also, asked about an android app.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:22pmUntil the bugs get worked out of Roku, you can hit the back button on your Roku remote and reload. It only takes a few seconds to reload. Hopefully, when it actually goes online at 5:00 PM EST, we won’t have those problems.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:42pmI too, am hoping that the servers can handle the volume. I have comcast and just checked my speeds with Speakeasy — 12.36 Mbps Download and 4.01 Mbps upload. Every time I log into a GBTV program it stops. I sure hope that it works better now that they’re up and running.
The least they should do is get reliable contact information when there is a problem!

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 2:03pmI have found that if you hit the back button on the Roku and then hit the resume button takes care of the loading problem. The loading message did not come back on the 2 times I did this. I found also that tapping the fast forward button and then immediately hit the play button gets it going again but the please loading message comes back in a couple minutes again. If you do not hit any buttons, it will sit there forever with the please loading message.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 3:17pmI just lower the video quality to get it to quit the constant stopping. Doing this has helped me

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 4:31pmI have found another way to work around the “Loading please wait” problem is to just hit the fast forward or fast rewind arrows at the bottom of your Roku remote. Move the program just a minute or two one way or the other and then hit the “play/pause” button between the two arrows and your show is back. Sometimes after doing this I won’t get the “Loading please wait” screen again at all. …rf

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 8:58pmFor what it is worth, I also had the problem of loading (buffering?) for a long time before the picture and sound would come up. I emailed customer service and they answered within a few hours and gave me suggestions on what to do. For instance what equipment was I using and did I have the latest flash player, accepted cookies, etc. Yes, I had all the right stuff but it still didin’t work. I emailed them back and this time they told that if I was using AOL I may not be able to get GBTV. So I launched it from Internet Exlorer and WALAA everything loaded in less than two minutes and has worked beautifully. So I suggest to anyone who is having a loading problem to check out their system and make sure it will support GBTV.

Posted on September 13, 2011 at 2:09amShasta, go to android market, select media etc., then type in search window gbtv.com and there is an app called the Ultimate Glenn Beck app. It cost 1.99 but it has everything in it; gbtv, glennbeck.com, the blaze, everything!!!!! Hope this helps. Saw the show today, so glad Glenn is back. So worth the wait and the money. Love you, Glenn, thank you.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 8:59pmVery fuzzy math indeed. Pointing out that the total number of Glenn’s viewers is greater than the number of people watching Oprah’s network at one time is exactly as meaningful as saying that the number of people who have seen Fire Maidens From Outer Space is greater than the number of people watching Gone With the Wind right now, or that the number of people who have read Confessions of a Shopaholic is greater than the number of people reading the Bible at 4 P.M. last Tuesday.

Posted on September 12, 2011 at 1:20pmI agree, network tv is mostly sex, sex, sex. As a father of three daughters, I have given up on network tv. I have found that disney is too dumb to watch, so we mostly watch cable channels like USA, or AMC. Even TVLand has “Hot in Cleveland” which just glorifies sex, and “Happily Divorced” which is just one big gay joke all show long. I watch TVLand, but turn the channel after 9 pm.

I know a woman who never tasted real turkey when she was growing up, just the pressed, fake stuff. Now, all grown up, real turkey tastes like swill to her, and she rejects it every time it is offered. No matter how often I try to get her to just take a little to let her taste buds adjust, to just expand her frame of reference, she refuses. You remind me of that woman, who is so schooled with a preference for fake turkey that she literally cannot recognize or appreciate the value of the real thing.
Beck is not perfect. Some of his shows are better than others. But even on his worst day he still is more real, more factual and more honest than any of the warped liberal media propaganda programs that pretend to be objective news. If you can’t see that, maybe it’s due to the way you grew up.
