Wall Street Journal Slams Obama for His ‘Head-in-the-Sand Performance’ on Iran

Wall Street Journal Slams Obama for his “Head in the Sand Performance” on Iran

AP photo

In a scathing editorial this weekend, The Wall Street Journal blasted President Obama’s handling of the Iran crisis, from the failure of U.S. diplomacy which has apparently only sped up the Iranian nuclear program, to Obama’s letting go unanswered Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey’s remarks that he doesn’t want to be “complicit” in an Israeli strike.

As TheBlaze reported last week, Dempsey told reporters that an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities would only delay, not likely destroy any nuclear program, adding: “I don’t want to be complicit if they [Israel] choose to do it.”

The Wall Street Journal’s editors wonder if Gen. Dempsey was speaking for himself or on President Obama’s behalf:

Barack Obama is fond of insisting that he “has Israel’s back.” Maybe he should mention that to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. […]

We don’t know what exactly Gen. Dempsey thinks American non-complicity might entail in the event of a strike. Should the Administration refuse to resupply Israel with jets and bombs, or condemn an Israeli strike at the U.N.? Nor do we know if the General was conducting freelance diplomacy or sending a signal from an Administration that feels the same way but doesn’t want to say so during a political season.

Whatever the case, the remarks were counterproductive and oddly timed, with this week‘s report by the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran’s nuclear programs haven’t been slowed in the least by U.S. or international sanctions. In fact, they are accelerating.

There are signs the Israeli government is getting ever closer to making a decision on military action. On Friday, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot quoted Israeli Prime Minister saying at a behind-closed-doors meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Israel that “time has run out” for diplomacy. And on Sunday, Netanyahu expressed that opinion publicly and on camera during his opening remarks at the weekly cabinet meeting, where he also said the international community must set a “clear red line” for Iran.

(Related: Netanyahu Calls for Clear Red Line on Iran)

The Journal’s harsh critique takes to task the Obama administration’s approach, which appears to be ignoring or denying the documented progress of Iran’s nuclear program and the Islamic Republic’s moves to mask those efforts and bury them deep inside fortified bunkers.

Last week’s quarterly report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showed that Iran has more than doubled the number of centrifuges in its underground Fordo bunker, raising even more suspicion that its nuclear efforts have military intent.

The Wall Street Journal editorial continues:

No wonder the Israelis are upset—at the U.S. Administration. It’s one thing to hear from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that he wants to wipe you off the map: At least it has the ring of honesty. It’s quite another to hear from President Obama that he has your back, even as his Administration tries to sell to the public a make-believe world in which Iran’s nuclear intentions are potentially peaceful, sanctions are working and diplomacy hasn’t failed after three and half years.

The irony for the Administration is that its head-in-the-sand performance is why many Israeli decision-makers believe they had better strike sooner than later. Not only is there waning confidence that Mr. Obama is prepared to take military action on his own, but there’s also a fear that a re-elected President Obama will take a much harsher line on an Israeli attack than he would before the first Tuesday in November.

The editors conclude: “Since coming to office, Obama Administration policy toward Israel has alternated between animus and incompetence. We don’t know what motivated Gen. Dempsey’s outburst, but a President who really had Israel’s back would publicly contradict it.”

To the contrary! If you were informed, you would know that the WSJ is the LARGEST circulation newspaper in the United States, and the ONLY major newspaper to have INCREASED its circulation during the Obama presidency. While newspapers both large and small have consistently shown contracting circulation and readership, the Wall St Journal has INCREASED its readership. That is NOT the sign of lost credibility. Shows how little you know. Much of the Old Testament came from Sumerian and Egyptian culture. Abraham was Sumerian, not Jewish. He later became a Hebrew.
Fact is, the Old Testament is an incessant story of war and genocide. The Old Testament is about a people focused on ethnic purity, a people of exclusion. Hence, the reason for a New Testament, a universal testament, an inclusive testament. If you read John Chapter 8, you’ll see how Christ felt about your Old Testament people.

      To the _jerk
Let’s break your comment down, there’s so much to cover. You did get one thing right. Israel is a small nation about the size of New Jersey. I would like to make a note that Israel has had many Nobel Prize winners that have earned the prize for their work to better man kind, unlike that fact that President Obama was GIVEN ONE FOR WHAT HE MIGHT DO.

Israel is small nation that has taken a barren desert and made it bloom again. It is a major exporter of fruit and vegetables to Europe, and a small nation that will be a “mover and shaker” of the world energy crisis, which we all will see very soon. Yes it is a small nation and there is much more to be said.

The rest of your comment will need to be looked from a Christian point of view. I’m assuming your not, so I will explain the best as I can.
Get a bible (KJV) and read about Israel in the last days, open your eyes. Everything you talked about is there and how Israel will dominate the world scene toward the end. How the world will turn against Israel and how God will deal with the world. IT’S GOING BY THE BOOK, step by step.
      Prophets:
Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekiel Daniel Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi
You can also skip to the end of the book, Revelation and see how the story ends if you like to save time.

kevway45, first of all Nobel Prize winners are political choices. Those who control the money and the publishing, control who the winners will be, i.e., the outcome. This is why Jews became the big winners during the 20th century, and not before. They held a huge advantage in publishing and grants.

As for your religious zealotry, your kind has been around predicting outcome, Revelations, for centuries. Your at the end of that long line of wrongheaded predictors.

Those are all in the secular world. The problem is when people blend their religious beliefs into the secular world, many times bastardizing the religion for purpose.

Do you even read what other people write? Do you even try to compare your views to the facts on the ground? Clearly you don‘t because if you did you wouldn’t think Israel was insignificant. Where was the cell phone invented? It wasn’t in the US.

Israel is a major player in the fields of electronics, medicine, and defense. Size is irrelevant. A country less than half the size of Texas once controlled territories, amounting to several times its own landmass, all over the world. Israel’s economy outshines the rest of the Middle East put together even though it is one of the only countries not to have oil. Israel has become as much an innovator as the US has been throughout its long history.

Obama cares nothing for Israel; as it one time was a part of the British mandate following WW1, and to be divided into two nation states: one of Palestine and one of Israel. The day after they declared their independance, as provided for under the auspiciouses of the United Nation, the original two state plan went the way of the wind; what would have been Palestine became part of Jordan.

Obamas anti-colonial mindset thus sees Israel as a mistake that needs to be recitified; simply by letting it be annhilated. Obama is a coward to the core.

      Consider the source: Ari Shavit

Having misinterpreted the gist of a posters ideals in the past I frequently check a posters previous 10 comments to see where they are coming from. The point is there a healthy (depends on your point of view) leftists polity in Israel. So I would have to check this writers prognostication of his previous opinion pieces (& how they panned out) & his stands on various issues. Just because I dislike a person;s stands on various issues does not mean I won;t consider what they say. For instance I listen to Juan Williams. I do it in order that I not become a Kool Aid drinker.

It is not surprising that they are neo-cons. It was predicted long ago. Did you get the memo? Did you read the memo?

“If you are young, and not liberal, then you don’t have a heart. If you are old, and not conservative, then you don’t have a brain.” -Churchill

I have heard about Kristol for the last 2 decades, but he hasn’t affected my thinking. I have know about Krauthammer since Foxnews has been on in the mid to late 90s. They didn’t affect my support for going to Iraq or supporting Bush. After our pilots being shot at or painted on radar, after I inspectors our held up for hours & sometimes days, I don’t have a good feeling that Iraq was following the Cease Fire Agreement they signed in 1991. Point is Kristol & Krauthammer were irrelevant for me supporting Bush & the Iraq War.

I already have this bookmarked along with Ynet & 7 Israel News.

Now that I have read 1/2 of the actual opinion piece I realize the guy is an idiot

      For example.
“They tend to read reality in terms of the failure of the 1930s (Munich) versus the success of the 1980s (the fall of the Berlin Wall). ”

A prerequisite for the Berlin war to come down is for there to have been a Berlin Wall. There was a wall because of us so called “War Mongers” would not hand over West Berlin to the tender mercies of the communists under threat of war. That is we were ready to fight & shed blood. Berlin Airlift? Does it ring a bell however faintly? Or do you leftists reinvent yourselves as neo-leftists & greens & you were never for the Soviet Union & never marched in Nuclear Freeze marches in the west at the Soviet behest.

Again I say Ari Shavit is an idiot. It is not his fault poor blighter he was brought up as one no doubt.

And he just happens to be steering this ship called the USA into the iceburg. Little time is left to right its course and I don’t really know if the course can be righted in time. Right on Moosmom! Romney is not, nor has he ever been a narcissist like the liar-in-chief. You never hear Romney constantly use “I” like the liar-in-chief uses it. If people did any background checking on Romney’s history, there are more stories of his charitable giving than you can imagine, not just monetarily, but of himself. Romney is a man who knows God is his Master first, who leads with sensibility and has outstanding character, love for his fellow man, love for his country, and love for his family. It is no wonder he’s received blessings from above. I read the following article this morning and could not fight the tears. Romney is the man this country needs:

We (the U.S.) have two lead-pipe cinches for allies: England and Israel. Without a strong ally in the Middle East (Israel), there would be an instant Caliphate created, and it would grow to such a strength as to be prohibitively dangerous for every nation bordering the Mediterranean. Muslims already have a firm toe hold in France and Denmark and other european nations as well as a long history of aggressive behavior in the Middle East. With Iran as the nuclear catalyst and chief arms and terror supplier, the Caliphate could easily start what ultimately might be World War III.

It is imperative that all free nations back Israel with its defense against Muslim hegemony… specifically Iranian’s nuclear ambitions. The future of the free world depends upon it.

There are only 4 choices. (1) Befriend them, (2) Fight, (3) Flight or (4) off yourself.

#1 Is not happening in this case . You can try to befriend someone, but is they rip your head off your are not friends.

#2 You actually have to study military science history & your opponent if you want to pull this one off with minimal casualties. You also have to watch out for politicians that want to scrimp & do this on a shoe string so that in the end you have high casualties & waste money.

#3. It is kind of hard to flee from someone in a small world. It gets smaller every day. Paying tribute so you can get your act together sometimes works. But you have the whole problem with Quislings willing to snitch on you. Or they might assume you will stop tribute one day & so build up their military courtesy of the tribute & take fewer loses when they do go after you.

#4 Be my guest. Especially if you belong to Population Network (rebranding of ‘Zero Population Growth’ (ZPG) fanatics who want you to “off” your offspring).

I like option #1, but it ain’t happening. I like option 1(b) also Respect or “live & let live”. But this is not happening either. We are just going to dance in the ring until one or the other let’s our guard down.

We are stuck with option #2.

We get rid of the mullahs &Ayatollahs via a de_NATSI-fication process then we can
