Walmart Employees in NC Call Police to Have Veterans Removed on Memorial Day

An unfortunate incident unfolded at an Elizabethtown, North Carolina, Walmart when employees called the police on some veterans who were handing out poppies to commemorate Memorial Day on Monday. While many individuals were appalled at the spectacle, employees who alerted authorities to have the veterans removed maintained that they were merely following policy.
WECT.com has more information regarding the showdown between the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the store and the confusion surrounding it:
According to a spokesperson for Walmart, groups who want to solicit in front of their stores must be approved and scheduled in advance and only one group is allowed to reserve a table at a time.
VFW member Bobby Ludlum thought the organization had booked a space weeks in advance, but the store had no record of it and booked another group.
“Maybe we’re somewhat at fault. Maybe we should have called in after our commander, came in and made the reservation and make absolutely sure that things were good,” said Ludlum.

“My understanding of what happened with the members of the VFW local post there in Elizabethtown was that there was a miscommunication or they hadn’t made arrangements with the store to do the poppies that day,” Jason Schoolcraft, North Carolina State Commander for the VFW said in an interview with CBS Charlotte. “To my knowledge, it’s an isolated incident with this store.”
In a statement to WECT, Walmart said that they are happy to work with the veterans’ group to find another weekend where they will be welcome at the store to distribute the items. According to Ludlum, his group is also due to hear from the popular store chain today as well.
“Our company’s appreciation for the military runs deep through our history. As one of the largest private employers of veterans, Walmart is proud to recognize and support those who have served and are serving our country,” Walmart is quoted by WECT.com as saying in its statement.
Currently, no outlets have reported on the reason employees felt compelled to call the police. A call to Schoolcraft has not yet been returned to The Blaze.

Personally, if it were me working there, I’d give them a pass. Let me ask, what other weekend, beside MEMORIAL DAY would be more appropriate. This kind of story makes me sick to my stomach truthfully.

ANOTHER WEEKEND? You are truly sick and un-American Wall mart. There is no other day than Memorial day. My parents were handing out poppies when I was a small child, and in my 58 years my earliest memories of this specific day were helping my parents hand poppies out on this one and only day of the year. Long before you existed in this nation the VFW has had this tradition how dare you call police on them as if you had no idea of this over half century American tradition which is observed on only one single day of the year.
Keep pushing us loyal constitution loving tradition loving true Americans you liberal fascist dung. Hell hath no fury like an American scorned.

Wal-Mart currently employs 2.1 million people and I will assume a good majority if not all of them are Americans. Wal-Mart buys a percentage of their goods from a foreign (China) country ONLY because our government hires people with no greater IQ than yours and makes it nearly impossible for American companies to produce goods in our own nation. America invents the impossible and does the impossible, but China knows how to copy stuff cheap and has no rules to follow. Our fine government has no problem allowing a country that has nothing but slave labor sell their products into America.
Next time you have a thought and want to speak – DON’T!

What a croc. The VFW has been doing the same thing on the same day for over 50 years, and at places like this store since they first opened. The employees did not just get off a boat with zero awareness of our traditions nor did the managers. As long as every employee in the store has had their job the VFW has done the same thing on the same day. The story states they had done the paperwork it was the employees who rented the space to another entity for that day. Error #1. Calling police on the VFW members is error #2. Wall Mart corporate failing to fire every employee involved in this is error #3. Do they really think they are so big now a boycott nationwide by all Veterans of Foreign Wars and all loyal Americans will not make a dent in their bottom line?

Then I’m sorry for your bad experience. We have one Walmart locally that’s a dump, but it draws a lot people from the inner-city (very low income, predominantly black). There‘s another that’s not such a dump, but the people are really trashy and rude (very low-income, predominantly white).
There are 2 others, 1 in a lower-middle class area, and one in an upper-middle class area that are very nice. We go often for our shopping needs. I feel comfortable in either of these two stores.
Like most of life, your experience probably has more to do with the local culture, income, and attitudes of people. Just because it’s a chain, I wouldn’t assume too much. Each store attempts to draw from its own local labor pool.

It sounds like there was inflexibility on the part of the manager or possibly employees. I hope the corporate office deals with them regarding this.
Our local Walmarts have had the Salvation Army crews, two drug rehabilitation groups and various other organizations outside their stores at different times. I’ve got no problem with that.
I’m not going to advocate closing Walmart stores because they provide employment for thousands of people, many of whom are disabled. They also allow me the opportunity to feed and clothe my family because we support a disabled relative and money is tight.
Was this handled poorly? Yes. Am I disappointed in how it was handled? Most certainly. Will I stop shopping at Walmart? No.

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 3:55pmAnd the solution to better wages is more jobs and opportunity. Early in the 2000s (blame it on Bush) Wendy’s was having to start at $2 over minimum wage because the labor pool was short. Minimum wage is unnecessary and diverts starter/apprentice jobs away from youth, forcing employees to India for labor that wants opportunity. Kids are taught that they should get a Ferrari and 4 months vacation for flipping burgers part time. These are known as ‘occupiers’..

There were benefits available to me after my probation that are as good – if not better than other places. Walmart is for getting what you already know you need, as long as you don’t mind made in China. They get so much of their food from China, not knowing how it’s prepared, that even the powdered drink mixes have a wheat warning (from someone who can’t have wheat, oats, barley or rye). That’s just one of many occasions, they should consider themselves lucky we even buy food there. I won‘t buy music or any electronics there because the music is censored even if doesn’t need to be and the electronics are far more expensive than the ones at our K-Mart. They even break easier. If it is then the whole service industry really is in the crapper]This is just a small sample of what the employees go through. To boot then they are rudely told how worthless and stupid they are by customers both in person and on forum boards.

In case you haven’t checked labels lately, in ALL stores, it is darn near impossible to find anything in the clothing line made in the USA. I wish it weren’t the case, but with textiles and farmers going out of business, the lack of cotton, and other materials, and updated factories to produce them, most store, SEARS, Penneys, etc. have little choice but to go overseas. We had several Levi factories, and glove factories, and shoe factories in this State, but they all went overseas also. Wal Mart isn’t perfect, but none of them are it seems, they are just trying to survive. Wal Mart employs a LOT of people, who would otherwise be on unemployment, or just plain unemployed.

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:43pmThe last time I went to Walmart the employees couldn‘t ring my order up because they don’t put the prices on the items. I told them to keep their merchandise and I walked out.

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:42pmThe on site store managers are so spineless that they were not brave enough to go and speak with the veterans? Wal Mart better issue a pro veteran statement soon…. too bad there is not a WM near me so I can avoid shpping there.

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:50pmUh, read the article?
“Our company’s appreciation for the military runs deep through our history. As one of the largest private employers of veterans, Walmart is proud to recognize and support those who have served and are serving our country,” Walmart is quoted by WECT.com as saying in its statement.
That doesn’t qualify as a pro-military statement in your view?

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:38pmBeing a veteran doesn’t put you above the law.
Now, what I’d love to see here is a bunch of tea bags saying what they usually say in threads like this, “that’s the last time I shop at WalMart.”
However, you will never hear a tea bag say they’re going to stop going to WalMart. It’s where they go to recharge.

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:55pmPlease, just what law? Seems to have been a miscommunication within the store management and the local VFW chapter. Before I blame Walmart as a whole I can see the occasional snafu happen anywhere. But again, what law are they breaking?

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:32pmThey felt compelled to call the police because unfortunately, over-reaction and idiocy are a hallmark of store employees in general. I have worked for the home office, and then worked as a vendor later after moving away from Arkansas. It would take all day to list the abuses I dealt with at store employees hands. In one instance, the customer service desk demanded we leave our car keys or $20 in order to obtain a guest badge to work in the department. I refused to hand over my car keys or money as I knew this was a local policy–not one Wal-Mart would stand behind. I asked to speak to a manager and they purposely only called up a customer service manager, not the actual manager or assistant manager. I was told by this CSM I had to give keys or cash to obtain the badge, I again refused and asked to speak to a manager. I was stonewalled, so I just left the store and reported the incident to my company. Then I picked up the phone and dialed a very familiar number to me at the home office and reported the incident. The next time I went in, they were no longer demanding anything. I used to be ordered around and treated like dirt by department managers as well during the course of my vendor work, often I just laughed it off, other times when it got too far out of hand, I reminded the department manager that I did not work for Wal-Mart, period. This mindset is instilled in these people as a matter of often being treated poorly by their managers themselves. But it is never corrected.

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:58pmAs I was leaving checkout at Walmart in San Clemente, CA, I requested carry out help. I had an item too heavy for me to lift out of the cart and into my car. After three requests for service, a little asian woman showed up. She took one look at me ( I am a 5‘10’ woman) and said she wouldn’t help me because I was bigger that her. I told her I needed help because of an injured shoulder. I got a nasty look but she finally did the job. How rediculous in the first place for Walmart to assign a tiny woman for carry out service!

Posted on May 29, 2012 at 2:29pmSounds like an honest mix up rather than an anti-veteran policy. You have to support Wal Mart wanting solicitors to register and receive approval to conduct business on their private property.
