Walter Reed Military Hospital Bans Bibles & Religious Materials — Then Overturns Policy

By many accounts, anti-faith sentiment has been working its way into the U.S. military this year. While the examples are anecdotal, they are collectively creating some angst in religious circles.
Atheists are battling over a cross that was placed at Camp Pendleton in California, there is a continued push for non-believing chaplains, a cross has been removed from an interfaith military chapel in Afghanistan and the U.S. Air Force Academy backed out of a toy drive (because it’s sponsored by a Christian group). And these are just a few of the examples.
Now, those who are worried about the continued erosion of faith and values in the U.S. military have another example to add to their roster. Fox News’ Todd Starnes is reporting that the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center implemented a policy that prevented family members of wounded military soldiers from bringing Bibles and other religious materials to their loved ones.
The policy was apparently set in a memorandum from the medical center’s commander, Chief of Staff C.W. Callahan. On September 14, the guidelines were issued for “wounded, ill, and injured partners in care.” It states, “No religious items (i.e. Bibles, reading material, and/or artifacts) are allowed to be given away or used during a visit.”
This policy — which led Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to give an impassioned speech on the House floor asking the president to intervene — has now been overturned. But the fact that it was implemented in the first place only adds fuel to the fire when it comes to questions about the military’s take on faith.
Watch King discuss the military’s handing of faith issues, below:
In an interview with Fox News & Commentary, King said, “The President of the United States should address this and should excoriate the people who brought about this policy and the individual who brought it about should be dismissed from the United States Military.” He continued:
“That means you can’t bring in a Bible and read from it when you visit your son or your daughter, perhaps – or your wife or husband. It means a priest that might be coming in to visit someone on their death bed couldn’t bring in the Eucharist, couldn’t offer Last Rites. This is the most outrageous affront.”
Sandy Dean, a public affairs official for Walter Reed, says that the policy will be re-written to “articulate” the center’s “initial intention which was to respect religious and cultural practices of our patients.” Dean claims that there was never an intent to prevent family members from providing religious materials to patients.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (AP)
Still, many people see these explanations as excuses. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, is joining King in asking for whoever was responsible for the memo to be fired.
“It cannot be allowed to stand. It must be rescinded and the people responsible for perpetrating it should be fired,” Land said. “They claim to be tolerant but this is as intolerant as you can be – to not allow wounded soldiers to have religious artifacts.”
It will be interesting to see how the medical center clarifies its original intention.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 12:43pmThe only instances when believers are permitted to disobey authority: (1) the orders are immoral, (2) the orders directly violate the Word of God.
Christians have every right to pray and read their Bibles when visiting the sick. Chief of Staff C.W. Callahan, you are WRONG, sir. Your order violates the Constitutional rights of American citizens.
Staff of Walter Reed – shame on you for not unanimously rejecting his order.
Examples:
Exodus 1:17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
Daniel 6:13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”
Acts 4:18-20 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 2:33pmI suspect they will say that they didn‘t want people giving religious items to OTHER patients who they don’t know. I can see a rule that people aren‘t going around trying to convert strangers who are stuck in a bed and can’t get away from you. That’s not what the policy said, but I suspect that’s what they were trying to outlaw. It’s the only thing I can think of. If they have email evidence supporting that that is what they were trying to ban, then I don’t think they should be fired for writing it poorly. Otherwise, fire them for stealing the rights of soldiers when they’re are their weakest.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 2:51pmSo the blaze will follow fox news and report on the congressman’s interpretation of the policy rather than actually reading the memo and understanding the intention. As with other military hospital Walter Reed has little or no private rooms and probably a number of wards. The policy is intended to prevent intrusions on other patients by visitors who might bring religious materials to distribute to patients who don’t want to be bothered or want the materials, or be disturbed by overt religious symbols or activities. Interesting that neither the Congressman, nor fox, nor the blaze seemed to have contacted the navy regarding the intent of the policy and how it was to be applied. All in all a lot to do about nothing.

Report Post »We apologize for any confusion that resulted from our policy. In no way was the instruction meant to prohibit family members from providing religious items to their love ones. The intent of the instruction was to respect the religious and cultural practices of all of our patients. We are drafting a new instruction that will clearly articulate our respect for religious and cultural practices of all of our patients and families.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 5:04pm@firstHat A) The memo is available, go find it and read it for yourself. Don‘t take anyone’s read on it. B) The significantly number of other items in the memo and the use of the word distribute provide insight into their intent. The notion that the President took the time to tell the head of the Navy what to write in the memo as suggested by some here is laughable. I’m sure the head of the Navy has nothing better to do than push an anti-christian agenda or restrict religious freedoms. But that is what we do in this country we use an ideological filter in terms of how things are regarded, reported and interpreted. If for no other reason look at the sources of the controversy, which speaks volumes.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 1:36pmThis started while I was still active duty. They began to remove anything linked to “Tradition” from our daily lives. The Navy is built on tradition and values from the days of Wooden Ships and Sails. If they can stop those traditions from passing to one generation of folks, thay can destroy the structure of pride and knowledge that comes from it. What most folks see as “hazing” is actually a lot of traditional values being taught through stress and pain. Been there, did that, understand the value of the lesson. The people who complain about it, are the ones who failed the test and cannot be relied upon when the going gets tough. Life can be tough and you sometimes need a reference point to measure yourself against. Ask a SEAL what was the toughest part of his career and it will probably be the time he spent training to become a SEAL. The whiners will soon rule the world and I won’t feel inclined to help them when they get in too deep.

He did not practice the Christian faith, rather he was very much into the occult. Himmler was right there with him on the occult practice w/his SS. Their occult practices also included drawing heavily fm Teutonic myth.
Hitler’s target after wiping out the Jews and Slavs was to go after the Church. Catholic priests and Lutheran pastors were all incarcerated and murdered in the concentration camps.

FTR, the old Walter Reed has been closed for months. It got BRAC’ed in 2005, and was officially closed in September. Walter Reed is now the name of what’s now the joint Army-Navy hospital in Bethesda.
As for the officer who ordered a ban on religious materials: frankly, I’d like to know how an officer such as this made his way up through the ranks. That an officer with such a tin ear could be in a position of command speaks quite ill indeed of this officer’s current and former superiors. This kind of open arrogance should long since have gotten him enough bad OER’s to force him out of the Navy.
The problem here is not that an order like this has no business being issued. The real problem is that an officer this arrogant has no business being in a POSITION to issue such an order.
How, exactly, did this officer end up with this much authority? THAT is the REAL scandal here.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 3:04pmHe has a soul, its just very very lost and confused and I’d say there is little hope for it of ever coming around. Someone how in his own twisted point of view, he thinks that what he is doing is right and just, he is living in his own world.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 1:55pmAshestoashes, it‘s scary how the books about the ’Left Behind” movie seem to be coming true on a daily basis. Seems like the only thing left that needs to happen is an all out attack on Israel and then a 7 yr. treaty with Israel.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 6:07pmPALERIDER54, For all you LEFT BEHIND believers–if you read Matthew 24:37-41, the people that are left behind are the survivors–“as it was in the days of Noah so will it be at the coming of the Son of man”. From what I recall the people that were left beind in Noah’s day was the survivors on the ark. Isaiah 26:20-21.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 11:53amOops! They are going to have to wait a little longer. Maybe if Barry gets back in, they can implement their no-Bible policy. This was just a few years too early. But it’s coming, the progressives never give up!

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 11:50amThis is a projection of what is to come. Once Obummercare takes over all medical facilities, no religious books will be allowed in any hospital, clinic or doctors’ office. After all the 1st Amendment requires freedom FROM religion… right???

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 11:50amI bet this idiotic policy didn’t originate with the military commanders, but was directed from some political apointed civilian in the pentagon. Another example of the lefts continuing war on Christianity and the military, two institutions they despise and want to destroy.
