Want to Know What Ron Paul’s Investment Portfolio Looks Like? Here’s a Peek

When it comes to investing, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) has made no secret where his preferences lie.

Total Return, The Wall Street Journal’s personal-finance blog, recently reviewed Dr. Ron Paul’s investment portfolio. According to the latest data available from his 2010 Form A financial disclosure statement, Dr. Paul is heavily invested in gold and silver.

The Wall Street Journal explains:

. . . Rep. Paul’s portfolio–fully 64 [percent] of his assets–is entirely in gold and silver mining stocks. He owns no Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), no ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM), no Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), no General Electric (NYSE:GE), no Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), not even a diversified mutual fund that holds a broad basket of stocks.

His non-mining portfolio holdings includes 14 percent cash and 21 percent real estate investments, according to the Journal report.

“[Paul] has no love lost for bonds (0 percent of his portfolio) and a dismal outlook on the stock market. Only .1 percent of Representative Paul’s portfolio is allocated to stock funds, and all of those funds are bearish–inversely correlated to the performance of the market,” writes Chris Barth of Forbes.

While some may call Dr. Paul’s investment portfolio unorthodox or risky, many call it successful. Due to the devaluation of the U.S. dollar, gold and silver have been in a bull market for the past decade, and it seems that Dr. Paul has had the foresight to invest in gold and silver mining stocks early.

“Paul’s portfolio is worth something roughly between $2.5 and $5.5 million, although that number has likely taken a hit as gold and silver prices have declined in recent months,” writes Barth.

And should any of this come as a surprise?

“The libertarian has long rallied for a gold standard, and has vocally worried about the stock market’s reliance on the value of the dollar,” writes Barth.

Recall earlier this year when Paul made headlines by confronting Ben Bernanke at a U.S. House Financial Services Committee Meeting, pushing the Fed Chairman to answer a question as to whether gold is money.

Dr. Paul’s top three holdings are Goldcorp, Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. He has owned these gold miners for a long time, before 2003. And despite the fact that these would appear to be sound investments, some analysts still think Paul — for a lack of a better descriptor — is crazy.

William Bernstein, an investment manager at Efficient Portfolio Advisors, says he has never seen such an extreme bet on economic catastrophe, according to the Journal.

“This portfolio is a half-step away from a cellar-full of canned goods and nine-millimeter rounds,” he says.

Still, despite repeated criticisms from market analysts, it seems that the simple fact of the matter is that Paul recognizes the headwinds facing the dollar and puts his money where his mouth is.

  Glenn knows that Bachmann and Santorum are finished. There is no time for them to get any momentum in Iowa, with Christmas and New Years upon us. Plus Both of them are Broke and have not people on the ground. Bachmann does not even have a staff in NH. It’s a race between Paul and Romney now.

Pauls nieve views such as the danger from Iran will prevent from ever being the POTUS. When it comes to the U.S., NO ONE comes close to Paul, BUT Pauls in favor in having a weak military while the world is in the process of becoming more dangerous then EVER, and THAT my friends is just plain ludicrous! Just ask the UK, POLAND, FRANCE, NORMANDY, and MOST of Eastern Europe how that worked out for them NOT THAT LONG AGO. Come on people, WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  So once again, you boil away all the condescending B.S. and get to basic facts about this article, & one thing becomes entirely clear. Ron Paul does what he says, and says what he does. I agree it is quite un-presidential to practice what you preach.
  
  I haven‘t listened to Glenn’s radio program in a long time, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he was favoring 7.62 x 39 mm these days. Personally I won’t allow commie riffles in my home. I understand though why Glenn would attack Dr. Paul for saying the same things he says. When you totally rip off someone else’s platform, you would need to tear that person down, to legitimize yourself as being first.

In my humble opinion Glenn has gotten in bed with the military industrial complex. The twice weekly stories on this board about the great new military tech is quite easy to see through. I won’t say Glenn sold out, but I will purpose that Glenn has bought into Corporatism over true capitalism. It is the only reason I can come up with for his, and his companies behaviors.   …and that is what is most disturbing to me. The ONLY reason Glenn doesn’t support Paul is because of Israel. But, the truth is Paul isn’t going to abandon Israel. When he gets elected he will see that he has no choice but, to support them. See I agree with Glenn on Israel and Iran. I even wear a “I stand with Israel” blue band on my wrist. I personally feel that Ron Paul has the right solution for the middle east. Keep our nose out of their business.. We have tried that babysitting the world. It’s not working. And this is coming from a once HUGE Neocon. I’ve seen the light the last few years thanks to Glenn. But, for some reason he is abandoning what he is preaching. Ron Paul after looking into the man is really the only choice we have. It’s either Newt the Establishment Progressive, Mitt the Progressive Semi-Socialist, or Michelle/Santorum. Neither of those 2 are going to get even close. Time for a gut check. Do we continue this charade with Mitt or Newt or is it time for REAL change. And believe me if I vote for Paul I will hold him accountable to what he says. No time in my life have I been so awake. And will Not allow these guys to lie to me anymore. I hope Glenn during his vacation really reflects and prays on this. The guys that are hating on Paul, I understand where you’re coming from. I was there not 4 months ago.   Which I find rather ironic as Glenn is supposed to be such a supporter of the Constitution and a fan of our forefathers who produced it, supports a candidate that isn’t anywhere near the same par constitutionally as Ron Paul. If a person claims to support the constitution, yet in the next breath endorses a candidate that is inferior constitutionally to Ron Paul, how is that conflict or words not going to create a confusion just as to where Glenn stands?

  Glenn is so drunk on Israel that it is really affecting his line of thought/reason. On one hand he wants a George Washington/Constitutionist (Ron Paul) but on the other hand he endorses candidates like Bachmann and Santorum who are big govt through militarism – pro patriot act loving …. wait for it….. wait for it….   Do you really think that anyone takes marching orders from Glen Beck? I was even one of the people in attendance at his restoring hope rally last year in D.C. Of course, back then he was supporting Libertarian political views. I really couldn‘t care less who he or anyone else votes for because I’m not voting for most popular kid in school. I am voting with my conscience for who I believe would best represent me to be the President of the United States.   As for the Paul debate, and for any of you die hard constitutionalists. While I am certainly all for the constitution, I also recognize society has changed drastically since the constitution was written, obviously. I am not one like the lefty loons who will say that the constitution is old and outdated, I will say that our understanding of it needs to be modern. No way around it, if it wasn’t for drastic changes concerning the way we ran our nation in the first 50 years, we would have fallen. Ron Paul trounces Newt Gingrich in latest NH poll

-The State ColumnRon Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, trounced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the latest American Research Group poll of likely New Hampshire Republican Presidential Primary voters released Thursday. Mr. Paul garnered 21 percent of the votes to finish in second place and Mr. Gingrich pulled in 16 percent of the votes to take third place. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney earned first place with 35 percent of the votes.Mr. Paul’s support in New Hampshire has skyrocketed since the American Research Group last conducted a poll in the Granite State. In November, Mr. Paul was 10 percentage points behind Mr. Gingrich with 12 percent of the votes. Mr. Gingrich’s support has fallen 6 percentage points. Mr. Romney’s support has hovered around 30 percent for the last several months.

  Enrico, Iran is not a threat like the establishment would like you to believe. Isreal has one of the strongest military’s in the world. Isreal would be a threat to the U.S. if they were like Iran toward us. Iran cannot even refine their own oil. For Iran to be a nuclear threat, they would have to get the means of this threat from Russia or China. At that point, our beef would not be with Iran per say, but Russia and China. Both have warned us about attacking Iran. It is all about oil and money through continuing wars. We are heading for very hard times, prepare.

I am encouraged when i see all the comments for and defending Ron Paul, not just on this site but on every site I go to. That includes sites in Canada and the UK. Only Paul has an online presence like this, I never see a reply saying Mitt is better and here is why or Newt, only once in a while an argument is made for Huntsman. Is all this free press hurting Paul? We will see but one thing is does do, is DRIVE me to defend him and promote him. I got to say I have never been involved in politics before but I see a possibilty to help Paul change the world for the better, and it was before my time that there was a person like that around.

  RDK, I have to disagree. Want to ruin a business, get it listed on the NYSE. Home Depot is a shinning example. Before they were listed they were a great place to shop. I would be asked dozens of times, “Can I help you find anything?” Each department was staffed by knowledgeable people. Mostly retired plumbers, electricians, painters, etc. all working in a corresponding department.
  
  Then they got listed on the NYSE and the professionals were replaced with people that didn’t have a clue about the department they work in. Less people work in the stores and just try to find someone to help you now!
  
  A company listed on the NYSE answers to stock holders. To heck with the employees and customers, its all about making money for the stock holders. Just ask anyone that has managed to keep their job from before Home Depot went public, they’ll tell you it ruined the company.

  Ron Paul has plans to recover one trillion dollars the first year., and to have the budget balanced by the third. This one trillion would be saved by cutting government departments such as “ The Department of Education” this would potentially cut out the Communist Propaganda taught to our youth..Ron Paul wants to cut the Department of Interior which I belive is responsible for managing citizen’s land…like what’s been happening in Minnesota.. he would take out the departmant that has been responsible for getting guns to Hezbollah.and fighting Arizona..Paul would cut Corporate taxes from 35% to 15%..adn he would keep Social Security and Medicare until another plan can be implemented.. So with the government out of the way..and our Constitutional rights restored..we eliminate the Communist twist this country has been endowed with and at the same time..protection from any foreign theocracy from overtaking us..I honestly didn’t see how any of these problems could ever be resolved…and they won’t be unless we get a Constitutionalist for President.. Paul has been there a long time..he knows what is going on..He has even stated that he would be willing to take as salary a mere $38,336 ..and he has always contributed back to the coffer..The current President makes $400,000 a year..Paul is as honest as they come..and he has not bought off by the elitists.. There are two ways to look at this:
1. He wants everyone to move to the gold standard just so he can become richer.
2. He believes what he says about fiat currency being detrimental to our long term prosperity so he practices what he preaches.

Seeing how we’ve been haphazardly utilizing the power of the fiat currency since the second we got off the gold standard, I am going with answer #2. Even if he were not to profit off of it, there is plenty of reason to leave fiat money behind without getting conspiratorial.

  I see it too. Glenn loves Ron Paul….. but as of yet has not fully understood what Ron Paul means by a Constitutionally correct foreign policy. I mentioned this a week or two ago…..that I thought Glenn would have a revelation eventually about what the Constitution advocates as sound foreign policy. IF Glenn is true to what he claims he stands for….everything our founders stood for…..he cannot deny the truth much longer. He needs to understand that Ron Paul is on the side of Israel. That America will be a much better ally if we stop making Israel come to us for our approval whenever she needs to do something. Israel is a sovereign nation and we have no business meddling. IMHO, Israel will take care of her own problems much better than if we try to muddy the water. Would America want another country to tell her what is best for her? No. That knife cuts both ways.

With Muslims it is not so much country as it is religion. If history tells us anything (which according to Ron Paul it tells us nothing) it is that crazy things have all been done in the name of religion and in the case of wars, all logic goes out the doors. Those who espouse jihad do not think of themselves as from various countries but rather from Islam. Paul either does not see it or he refuses to admit it and someone like that in control of our nukes is almost as crazy as those who are in control of their own nukes. And by the way as far as work I own my own business and do quite well, In fact if I wanted to I could post here all day every day and still pay my bills, plus contribute my tax money to your food stamps.
