Want to See a Customized .700 Caliber ‘Dinosaur Hunting’ Rifle in Action?

Elephant guns have been around since the 19th century, but this hand-held Howitzer takes high caliber rifles to another level.
Introducing the .700 Caliber, “Dinosaur Hunting WTF” rifle.
A member of the Cast Boolits firearms forums posted photos and video of this weapon and cartridges he built from scratch.
Everything you see below is customized craftsmanship, except the barrel.
The cartridge is named the .700 WTF (”What The F…”) and was made by “fire-forming a .50 BMG brass case, trimming it to 3 inches in length and then sizing it. The round is loaded with a 1132 grain paper patched .700 lead cast bullet.”
According to Firearm Blog, the rifle has a “16.25″ barrel, can push the 1132 grain of lead up to 2300 fps. Thats 13,000 ft/lbs of energy, right up there with the .50 BMG and far exceeding the .700 Nitro Express. The cast lead bullet has enough energy to pass clean through a 1/4″ steel plate.
When a Tyrannosaurs Rex rampages through your neighborhood, this would seem to be the perfect tool for the job.
You can watch video of the .700 “WTF” put some rounds down range here, via Youtube:

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 12:40amThat‘s because the old guy didn’t put all his weight and lean forward like everyone else. You can see this gun is like shooting a mini cannon. I don’t think I would even want to shoot something like that. Well, maybe one time. I did love the Archies “sugar, sugar” song. It was so fitting with the video. lol One concern I do have….I think when the ATF catches wind that some guy made a gun from scratch, I would be worried he will be getting a late night visit by some 50 jack booted thugs kicking down his door with guns pointed at his head. Aside from that, that is a very stylish, nice looking mega rifle. Maybe our army could find a use for it taking out small personnel vehicles. I rather it be used in war instead of hunting elephants. In fact, I don’t believe in hunting elephants as they are too smart of an animal to kill for sport.

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 8:11amIt is not against the law to make a single shot (non-repeating) rifle here in America without a license. So long as each round is loaded individually by hand you can make what you want for a rifle.

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 10:39amYou do not need a Manufacturers license or any other license to build your own firearms. They don’t even need a serial number. So long as you are not building it for the purpose of selling it. That doesn’t mean that you cannot sell it, it means that BATF has the discretion on prosecuting you or not if you sell it. As long as you follow all laws regarding firearms such as Barrel length for the type of firearm (long gun/ handgun) and are not building a Select-Fire (Machine-gun) firearm. There are no restrictions on single-shot or semi-auto nor any on how you load the ammo. Your state may have restrictions! Build away Blazers but use some Google-Fu and EdJamaCate yoo seelfs!
Report Post »The Dark Side
Posted on December 3, 2011 at 12:42pmI am not trying to quibble but I still strongly believe this gentleman has an FFL. At the end of the clip he speaks of hardening the ammunition to make it punch through armor plating. My recollection of the applicable gun laws is that this type of ammunition is illegal for most to use/possess. Because he cavalierly speaks of manufacturing the ammunition and then posts such on the internet, I am led to believe he has the appropriate licenses.
Reply from the Dark Side!!!

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 1:34pmThat plate is not armor steel it is most likely a spare mounting plate for the guys reloading press. He doesn’t describe it as “armor”. He may very well have an FFL but nonetheless everything he built is perfectly legal without a license. Lead projectiles will foul a barrel past certain velocities and or pressure levels. To stop the fouling you add more Antimony and or Tin to the Bullet alloy which makes it harder. You cannot harden lead to the point where it is considered “Armor Piercing”.
Read up on the Laws: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/usc_sup_01_18_10_I_20_44.html
Federal law relating to Armor Piercing ammo is in Title 18 Chapter 44 sections 921 and 922.

Unless you meant SD but the higher the SD number, the better the bullet’s penetration. So tell me, how can a “professional” screw that up? My rifle is the 444 marlin with Lyman peep sights. Loaded with 300 grain bullets at 2100 fps (cast or jacketed) not the greatest BC. I have managed take a 1300lb moose (in one scapula and out the other) Plus a 700lb bull elk, 250lb black bear & many deer but they don’t count as big game. My “guess” is the .700 would do a number on large game at short range 100-150 yards

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 12:00amYeah, good idea 82nd, turn this weapon into a bull pup so that when the 70,000 psi finally ruptures the reloaded casings and blows the chamber your face will catch ALL the shrapnel. The bull pup looks neat but weapons of this type need to be seriously overbuilt to alleviate the risk to the operator. Even something as simple as loading a 7.62X51 into an m-14 chambered in .308 has been know to cause case failure and catostrophic damage to the weapon. Not to mention personal injury to the party shooting it.
Despite popular belief and manufacturer insistence, the .223 chamber doesn’t match the 5.56 and neither does the .308 match the 7.62. I know that we’re talking about a .700 caliber rifle here and the fact that the rounds are not mass produced and the guns are probably hand built with a margin of error should really concern you if you are planning on making it a bull pup.
Sorry if I blew your plans out of the water, not really. You’ve been a jerk here on more than one occasion and I suspect you of being a neocon.

Report Post »Case failure isn’t any more of a problem with the M14 than with any other rifle. The danger inherent in rifles like the M1A (M14), M1 Garand, AR15, and other military designs with free floating firing pins is slam fire, which is a phenomenon in which the cartridge fires before the bolt locks. When this happens the case fails because it isn’t fully inserted in the chamber and is therefor not supported.
Slam fire is caused by the firing pin striking a soft primer when the bolt abruptly slows during the loading cycle. The solution for handloaders is to use only mil spec primers (CCI #34) which have hard cups specifically for use in the M1 and M1A (M14).
A case failure will not cause the chamber or the bolt to blow up. If the bolt is closed and locked the only danger is in the gas escaping past or through the bolt hitting the shooter in the face. This is a very real hazard with the Mosin Nagant, as I learned through experience. Never shoot one without safety glasses. As long as there is a provision in the design to vent the gas away from the shooter the danger is minimized or eliminated.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 2:03am@ 82nd, You have more than once said that you disagree with Ron Paul on his foreign policies and called him and those who are going to vote for him varying names. Also, you have yet to provide any alternative plans of action on this subject and those that you would put forward (I am guessing) would not bring home our troops from foreign wars and would commit us to another war with Iran and possibly China and Russia. If my assumption is true then the term “jerk” that I called you is a pretty light punishment. But hey, at least we can agree that a 9mm is good enough to kill a man right.
@singlestack, I’m aware that case rupture does not automatically lead to chamber failure and in 99.9% of the cases of case rupture nothing is damaged and all that is needed is for the case to be extracted from the chamber. My problem with ANY bull pup design is that the operator’s head will always be over the chamber in the .01% of failures that are severe enough to cause the barrel to go all shrapnel. I also know from 1st hand experience of the slam fire that you are speaking of and know that alot of Marines on qual day try to say their weapon didn’t fire a round when they pulled the trigger when in fact their weapon had not fully seated the round. The firing pin just dings the primer and it looks like a strike, but it is easy to tell the diff. I could see how cheap primers would cause a problem, but that only adds another reason to not make a bullpup weapon.
