Want to See the Mugshots of Those Lawbreaking Amish Buggy Drivers?

See the Mugshots of Those Lawbreaking Amish Buggy Drivers in KentuckyOn Wednesday, we brought you the story of eight Amish men from Kentucky who were sent to jail this week over their refusal to comply with a local safety regulation.

They say that the mandate, which would require them to post a bright orange triangle on their horse-drawn buggies, violates their modesty code. (They reportedly use reflective tape instead, but that’s not good enough.)

The Smoking Gun — a web site known for documenting and publicizing celebrities’ legal dramas — has published the Amish mens’ mugshots. It’s tough to describe the pictures in words, as almost nothing we say could do them justice.

The Amish men, clearly unhappy with the ruling (they still plan to fight it) couldn’t look more miserable if they tried. In describing the photos, Metro.us reporter Cassandra Garrison writes:

Why are Amish mugshots so much funnier than regular mugshots? Could it be the long, bushy beards? The strange triangular haircuts? The smug, sullen expressions? The slightly-off-to-the-side glances?

As mentioned, the men are probably more than unhappy that they’re being forced to spend three to 10 days in the slammer, but there may have been additional angst among them over another issue: Having their pictures taken.

Many Amish refuse to utilize cameras as a result of their choice to avoid certain technology and thus do not enjoy having their images captured by others. In this case, it was obviously required.

Below, see the mugshots that have everyone talking:

At least in part, our woes of lost liberty is our own doing. Village integrity, not Washington entitlements, may be the sword of truth. Perhaps the first step is to take back village. Washington DC is an obese beast. No diet of ‘start next year’ will amount to girth reducing dimensions.

Why are only heir buggies affected by these safety regulations? Basically, a religious group has been targetted by the regulations. Why aren’t all vehicles registered in that county required to have those placards? Don’t say because of tail lights, because vehicles parked on the side of the road present the same hazards as the buggies.

@Bum Thrower you don’t get their vote. They do not vote in many instances, and definitely not on these faulty computer voting terminals.

What is ridiculous is this intrusion against a people that helped found this great land. You can be sure a religious suit will be brought against this police station and town, with reason.

I would what would be being said if this were Native American’s, or how about Muslim women wearing Burkas covering their faces for license pictures, or in Airport’s? Oh wait the Burka issue has come up and they can cover their faces on their license photo‘s and in Airport’s.
So you can’t tell who they are, but TSA can molest 8 year old children.

No longer can two kids duke it out after school. someone is going to jail. no longer can a parent use physical force to punish their child. No longer is corporal punishmnet allowed in school. But real violence is is used by liberals to get what they want. wheterh it’s teachers in the Wisconson capitol or union things on the warfs of Seattle. The trend is to shut up the little man (US) and teach the younger generation to obey the big man (GOVERNMENT AND ALL THAT SIDES WITH IT). Do not disobey an order. THE POLICE ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS.

Place your trust in the LORD, question and doubt the government. Then again the police are everywhere making sure EVERYONE is under their thumb. Just another example of brownshirt tactics. Since when does a vehicle equipment violation get anyone arrested? Why did the passengers get arrested? Shouldn’t bicyclists comply also by wearing that big safety triangle on their bikes. It’s harder to see a bicyclist than a brown buggy the size of an SUV. I hate selective law enforcement. It’s prejudicial and in this case civil liberties oriented since only the Amish use those buggies. Those special laws were created just for their vehicles. Legal bigotry.

@ mils. If we must follow the law of the land that we live in, then so must our government. By the way, the law of the land in The Constitution. And in there is the freedom of religion. A religion older than our Constitution.

@ Cherynn, Thank you VERY much for remembering Ruby Ridge. It appears that over the years, people have forgotten what our tyrannical government is capable of.

@ burtontd76, When orders were given to murder Jews in Nazi Germany, what do you think the prison guards told our troops when asked, “Why would you do such a thing?“ Those Nazi soldiers told our soldiers that they were ”just doing their jobs.” Like our police today, they were just doing their jobs.‘ That’s not an excuse. An illegal order can be defied by even the smallest of people. NO ONE can be asked or told to give up their Constitutional rights. They are GOD-GIVEN. Not man-given. Other than that, I agree with the rest of your post.

I remember Waco and Janet Reno too. The Clinstone regime was almost as scary as Obummers is today. Democraps love to wage wars against American citizens in our own country but never have the b@lls to fight abroad. What did Clinton ever do about the attack against the USS Cole??? Nothing that I remember, but he did “feel our pain”. I wonder if he felt as much pain as the children of the Branch Dividians he cooked to death? Carter, Clinstone, Obummer, it just keeps getting better each time. It scares the cr@p out of me thinking what the next clown they put in office does. We might not survive as a country.

I don’t know what country you come from, but in the US Army, one must adhere to all orders legal or otherwise, or be branded. My career has suffered because I dared to stand. It doesn’t matter how large or trivial the matter, that is the way Lincoln and his minions transformed the “union” into a slaughtering force. Hitler had plenty of guidance from ‘honest abe’ (the crooked trial lawyer). He just took longer to implement his plans.

“An illegal order can be defied by even the smallest of people. NO ONE can be asked or told to give up their Constitutional rights.” YEAH, RIGHT.

We try to vote in the right person by what they say they stand for and what they promise they will do; they are the ones that break those promises and stands once elected. We are lied to and deceived. I agree about being more involved and stop complaining.

It is so sad that we are heading in this direction losing our freedoms. Why don’t they leave those poor people alone. Let us and them worship and respect each others beliefs without pushing them on others. It should be up to the individual what or who they want to believe in. If they choose not to believe in anything or anyone then we should respect them also.

The county is GRAVES, County Kentucky. Mayfield City was the location of the arrest.

For a true dose of irony in this story go to the County’s own website: http://gravescounty.ky.gov/about.htm, and read the first few paragraphs. It seems that this part of Kentucky was “purchased” from the Choctaw Indians by Andrew Jackson, and is part of the “Jackson Purchase.”

Any history buffs know how oppressive President Jackson was to the Indians, it’s little wonder that another quiet agrarian group is being bullied by the government.

The county website: http://gravescounty.ky.gov also provides a full list of elected officials, judges, and County workers along with their email addresses.

IF You want to make a difference, LET THESE ELECTED OFFICIALS KNOW! Show your outrage, and be willing to support their opponents, especially the judge’s opponents at the next election.

And if you read the NHTSA statistics, you’d be surprised how often people on foot, on bicycle, and in buggies get hit. There are a crapload of crappy drivers on the road in this country.

The reflective marker is REQUIRED OF ALL SLOW-MOVING VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. This includes farm equipment, golf carts used on the road, and trailers to vehicles not intended to be moved above 35 miles an hour.

Some people seem to keep forgetting that the use of public graded / paved roadways for any purpose is a privilege and is subject to legal control measures. Like it or not, that is the law.

If you don‘t stand up for those whose rights are stripped now because you don’t share their beliefs, who will be around to stand up for you when it‘s your rights they’re targeting? I’ll be writing Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul. These Amish have a 1st Amendment law suit. Knowing their culture, they won’t sue. Wish they would.

Actually it is their diet. They drink well water, not the mandated flooridated city water. Consuming large amounts of flooride as you grow up adds an average of 2 inches to your height. It makes you less aggressive, may pit or yellow your teeth and makes your bones more likely to fracture as well. Don’t take my word. Look it up.

      Really?
      Great!

Remember when police officers still believed they were “public servants” and were “to serve and to protect”?

I remember the story of how my father used to get drunk, and the police would bring him home, and tell his mother he was drunk again. NO ARREST. Just FIXED the problem by getting him home, and humiliating him in front of his parents. I think this may have happened twice before it sunk in that it was NOT okay for him to get drunk in public.
I remember when children LIKED police officers.
I remember when officers were polite and friendly, and HAPPY to give directions.

      @Tom

The transition happened when they militarized the police starting in the 1970′s (SWAT was the first step) and we started calling them “law enforcement officers” instead of “peace officers”. The bad thing is that people have been taught to worship the police, and that’s a hard thing to deal with, especially when a lot of that worship comes from “our side”. We shouldn’t hate police, but we really need to stop worshipping them and making them infallible in popular mythology.

@Tom: ‘What happened’ is the laws that are passed in the states that strip away our rights… and the police, who are charged with enforcing the law… are required to enforce these laws. Stupid or not. Lack of common sense in society has led to the herd-like acceptance of more laws being passed (e.g., curfews for teenagers because their parents don’t keep tabs on them; laws for height/weight requirements for child safety seats because parents are so ignorant they don’t bother restraining their kids safely; required compliance with removing your shoes and submitting to a search at a TSA checkpoint despite the fact that 90% of Americans do not fit ANY terrorist profile…).

Remember Halloween in 2001? EVERY kid wanted to be a police officer or firefighter. Couldn’t find a costume for your kids. What has happened since then?

I grew up in a community with a large Amish & Mennonite population. Guess what? Some cheat ‘the English,’ some are drunks and beat their children, some are prejudiced. And most are decent people who are peace-loving, conscientious objectors, minding their own business and want to be left to live their lives and worship in peace. Just like the rest of Americans.

Secondly, this whole case is about control and power, those orange triangles do absolutely NOTHING to lessen accidents. I live amongst the Amish in Central PA. There are many many car/buggy collisions every year here, it is mostly from un-attentive driving, NOT because of an orange triangle, our Amish here bowed down to the authorities and put them on, it has done NOTHING to stop collisions.

Do you honestly think that the police department was going to make an exception and NOT take a mug shot?- even though every human being that gets arrested gets them taken? You are also advocating shutting down the police department for doing what? Enforcing the law? It was dumb for them to get arrested, but there is a law on the books that was not being followed. If we all disobeyed laws that we thought were dumb, or didn’t pertain to us, then the world we be pretty jacked up. If a muslim woman wearing a Hijab with full face covering gets arrested, would you expect the police to take the mugshot with her completely covered? Uhhhh…No. I didn’t think so. Agree completely.Whatever happened to personal responsibility? It has disappeared.Too many laws, & too many lawsuits.Eg. if you trip & fall & injure yourself-YOU should have been looking where you were walking,& realize it was your OWN “accident”, & suffer your own consequences, not sue for personal injury. You ride a bike at night, get hit by a car, & sue the company that makes the bike, because there was no warning on the instructions or box it came in??
There is a post on here about someone wanting to see orange signs on every bicyclist, jogger, etc.-how about revoking the law requiring the orange signs, & let people TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY on themselves?Surely one should be capable of realizing that bicycling, jogging, driving a buggy (or a tractor for that matter) could produce a hazard in visualization on the road-so these people take on that risk–personal responsiblity-&then any accidents that occur-the driver of a vehicle that runs into these folks are likely at fault,WITHOUT QUESTION-not having been able to control/avoid hitting something or someone on the road-this is the driver’s personal responsibl..however-as tragic & PROFOUNDLY sad & difficult as it may be, perhaps we should understand that these people should have realized the risks when they CHOSE to ride a bike, jog, or drive a slower-moving vehicle on a road where there are higher speed limits, lessened ability to visualize the road ahead such as country roads with hills/valleys/curves?Choices & personal

Because small government was the second most guiding factor in the Founding Fathers’ beliefs. As they rightly believed that when government gets too big then what will happen is what is happening right now. NO ONE has any freedom and the large majority of our freedoms have been taken away. The government when it gets too big forgets that they are working for us and start thinking that they are our masters and real people refuse to accept the loss of our freedoms and that we are willing to fight and die for our freedoms, especially our freedom of religion. Big governments are nothing more than dictatorships and I don’t care which party is in charge if it is too big because the crooks in either party comes out enmasse in that case. If you want to find out what the Founding Fathers thought, go to wallbuilders.com, this is the leading site for that information. Just remember that Stalin, Hitler, and several others are prime examples of what happens when the people lets the government get too big.

That’s what is wrong with non elected beuracracies making rules and regulations like they were laws. That is the ultimate abuse of power and we say NO!

      you are joking?

you want to go back to the days of kings, cesears, and pharohs? really? that is what government is. they are CONTROL. that is ALL they are. not protection. YOU protect YOU. not someone else. what incentive does anyone have to help you? 0. they have their own agendas. wake up son.

the real question is why are so many people driven on having a large government control every aspect of their lives? what the hell made people give up on themselves and give all their rights and thoughts to a bunch of politicians?

Well Ron, if you have to ask that then maybe you deserve what you get. As for the rest of us, we know that a smaller gov. is easyer to pay for, gives Much more power to the states and lets people vote with their feet. If you will look at history you will see that every country has passed its zenith after hitting that taxation rate of 50%. If you do an honist and accurit acount of your income you will see that we have passed that percentage.. We are now the most indebted country in the world. What do you think this administration would do if China wanted to traid all their US Dollars for all the goverment land in Navada or Utal? What if they threatened to crash our econimy if we didn’t agree? Ask me again what the problem is with big goverment.!
