Want to See The World’s Biggest Caliber (.905!) Rifle in Action?

Shooting a .700 caliber packs a punch. Step it up to an almost unheard of .905 caliber, and you have a ballistic beast in your hands.

Want to See The Worlds Biggest Caliber Rifle in Action?

The Blaze brings you the  SSK industries .950 JDJ. It’s the biggest centerfire rifle ever made.

With a 2400 grain bullet, propelled by 240 grains of powder, the JDJ is comparable to a World War I-era tank round or a 20mm cannon in terms of kinetic energy.

Estimates are that one of these rounds would easily pass through several human targets– even if each were equipped with full body armor.

Want to See The Worlds Biggest Caliber Rifle in Action?

It was almost classified as a “destructive device” but a special “sportsman exception” was made for the JDJ.

The guys from Knight Rifles headed out to the range to give this monster a try. Very few people have ever shot the .950 JDJ as a rifle, as only 3 have been made.

Want to See The Worlds Biggest Caliber Rifle in Action?

This model was the first and the lightest coming in at a robust 50 lbs. The custom bullets cost about $40 each.

Want to See The Worlds Biggest Caliber Rifle in Action?

So what’s it like to shoot a bullet that nearly an inch wide and four inches tall? Well, it has been described as having “significant recoil” and in the video below, one of the shooters say “it’s like firing ten .30-06′s at once.”

Another shooter, after getting a taste of that vicious recoil, turned to his buddies and yelled “you lied to me. it kicks like a mule.”

You can see the .950 JDJ in action below, courtesy of the guys over at Knight Rifles:

Might be good for disabling engines on enemy armored units. You would have to have an extra fireteam just to hump the gun & extra ammo. Pretty impractical, I’d rather carry an AT-4 rocket….much lighter.

The clip only focused on the recoil., I would be interested in seeing what it does ballistically down range. What kind of groups does it print at 1000, how does it do in the wind (I imagine not real well with such a fat and short bullet).

The 50 BMG is basically an oversized 30 06 round, and behaves very similar to the 30 06. The 338 Lapua is doing amazing things on the range, and in combat in Afghanistan. I can only imagine what will be available in another 20 years.

From the looks of the recoil on this bad puppy, I think they need to rethink the muzzle break on it.

If you can’t do it with .50BMG, give it up. The Barrett is enough iron to carry around. 2 bucks a shot beats $40 any day – more shooting fun. Want to go nuts? Why not just chamber one for 20mm or 30mm cannon? At least you can get surplus ammo somewhere (the Ruskies will sell you anything you want). This thing needs to be an artillery piece on wheels with a lanyard to fire it. GEEEEZZ.

Ranger I think yer missin the point. This thing catches my eye for the same reason I’ve been wanting a PTRD/PTRS- anti-materiel purposes. I agree .338 is probably the most worthy sniper round in production, but this thing has the primary purpose of penetrating armored vehicles and the like, the way I see it. Sure as hell wouldn’t want to spend $40/rnd on anti-personnel anyways (I still don’t know what 14.5×114mm would cost and HOW one would procure it, without forming their own brass and custom-designing a reloading press). I’m thinking $40/rnd is cheaper than a shape charge, and I’m also thinking that reloading the ammo (if you can find a press for it) would make it MUCH cheaper than $40.

Assuming TSHTF, I’m thinking AT rifles could be quite useful against an aggressor. Whether if be an oppressive government or foreign invaders, they’re probably going to have armored vehicles, and this thing could beat LAVs and choppers to death at the very LEAST. I’m thinking with the right shot at a close enough range, you could hold off a tank.

At the very least, beginning an ambush on an oppressor by making their point man explode into bits without giving away your position is probably going to freak out the rest of the unit and make it more difficult for them to put up a real fight.

It’s not always about testosterone ya know :P

Ok yeah, maybe a little testosterone :P

But pracical uses are what REALLY give me a hard-on, and unlike many people here I actually see one for this! There are several other anti-materiel rifles I’m thinking of, but obviously this thing has the most muzzle energy, and it may be able to accomplish some feats that the others can’t. Could be effective at a much longer range as a anti-heavy armor weapon than, say, a 14.5mm.

The .223 was designed for shooting varmints. PSDMF – Characteristics of the Defense

preparation, security, disruption, massing effects, and flexibility

Flexibility is derived from sound preparation

I want a round that is affordable, and can be aquired with ease. I may prefer a .40 cal to the 9mm, but much easier to get 9mm, and also easier to get the components to reload 9mm.

Rifle cartridges such as the 5.56, 7.62 are readily available, and so are rifles that shoot these rounds. If it hits the fan, these cartriges are going to be the easiest to get your hands on.

If I wanted something big, and that will punch through armor, I would look hard at the 50 BMG. Many different types of rounds available, and much easier to aquire and reload than some bizare cartrige.

      To each his own though.

Point taken Rangerp. Not necessarily saying this is the BEST choice for the job, but it’s worth considering. The .50BMG would certainly be much more useful against light armor at up to medium or medium-long ranges, but it would have trouble against tanks and the like. Even the PTRD required a lot of both skill and luck to take out a tank, and that has (roughly on average) 5000J more energy (25000J vs 20000J) per shot than .50BMG rifles. The .950 JDJ has over TWICE the energy (53000J) than even the PTRD’s 1.45×114mm, so I think it could be pitoval in certain scenarios where the .50BMG would not do the job. On the whole, however, the .50BMG is certainly the most wieldly and easiest to feed of anti-materiel platforms, that I can agree to.

If we learned anything in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is that the poor man does not fight tanks with firearms, he does it with IESs, specifically the EFP. A light armored tank will stop any rifle bullet you send at it. Nothing stops the EFP.

$40 bucks a round and kicks like a mule? Like going to the bar with 8 martial artists.

Now, if RCBS will just build a rotating rock chucker larger enough, you could save some money by rolling your own.

@DARMOK……“home defense” huh?…….yes, someone could truly attack you with a house, and you would repel them easily…..good luck with the wife though…..I managed to talk the wife into letting me buy a new rifle today….yay for me!!

That is true, I could repel a winebego very easily with that. It might be good for hunting wabbits also.

It would do some damage on an APC maybe, but a tank like the M1A Abrams would barely notice the impact. Short of a Hell Fire missile, you ain’t killing one of those beasts.
