Want to See a Massive 30,000 Pound Penetrator Bomb?

U.S. enemies around the world have dug deep into the earth to hide weapons and harden military targets from attack. So to deal with rogue states who decide to go down under, the U.S. has some developed big, earth-thumping “super bombs,” but none more powerful than this:
Meet the MOP, or Massive Ordnance Penetrator.
Its goal of blasting through 60 feet of concrete with a bomb exploding at 200 feet underground is a tall order. To accomplish that, the school-bus-sized MOP is dropped from a high altitude, and uses a combination of technology and Newton’s laws of physics to punch deep into the earth and obliterate its target.
The MOP is 20 feet in length and weighs 30,000 pounds. In 2007 the MOP was successfully tested, which led the Air Force to order eight of them at a cost of $28 million in April 2011.
Currently, the B-52 can carry and deploy the MOP, but Boeing and Lockheed Martin are both working on a next generation bomber than can replace the B-52 and carry MOP-sized munitions.
The new weapon recently received a special design accolade, as according to Business Insider, manufacturer Boeing has received the William J. Perry award from the Precision Strike Association to honor “one of the Secretary of Defense’s number one weapons programs.”
Interestingly enough, the MOP is part of the U.S.‘s military’s move towards a decreased reliance on tactical nuclear weapons. The thinking is if you can get enough explosive yield from a conventional bomb, there is no need to risk the fallout and contamination of a tactical nuclear strike.
While the MOP is an innovative new design, massive aerial bombs of different types have been in use for decades. Some have weighed even more than the MOP, and saw use as far back as World War II.
The Massive Ordinance Aerial Bomb (MOAB), also called the GBU-43B or colloquially the “Mother Of All Bombs,” was used by the U.S. against the Taliban in Afghanistan. At the time of its initial production, it was the most powerful conventional (non-nuclear) munition in the U.S. arsenal.
At 30-feet-long and 18,000 pounds, the MOAB could only be delivered by a handful of aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules.
Below is a short clip showing a MOAB detonation:
The BLU-82 “Daisycutter” is a 15,000 lbs. explosive monster that saw use during the Vietnam war, initially to clear the dense undergrowth for a landing field, which is why is was also known as the “jungle buster.” Later in the war, it was also used for anti-personnel and psychological operations effects.
Unlike a penetrator, though, it did not bury itself on impact and in fact left little or no crater upon detonation. Its explosive force was mostly directed laterally, and it was able to clear out vegetation (or anything else) for a 130 foot radius.
And here is the Daisycutter showing what it can do out in the desert:
The T-12 “Cloudmaker” was the first “Super Bomb” developed by the U.S. for use in the mid-1940′s against hardened bunkers and other targets that were invulnerable to conventional bombs.
The Cloudmaker’s extremely thick nose section allowed it to punch deep into hardened concrete structures and then after a short time fuse detonate underground. This created what was called an “earthquake effect.”
At 42,000 pounds, the “Cloudmaker” was the aerial juggernaut of its time, and paved the way for later super bombs and deep penetrators, including today’s high-tech MOP design.

Americans used to believe, back when we actually adhered to the Constitution, that one doesn’t strike others first for “future self defense”, and considered such lashing out as the acts of an irrational, fear based cowardice that no real man would endorse. Keep in mind that we also believed at the time in rugged individualism, we thought cowboys and boyscouts were good things, and we mostly minded our own business and had strong communities.
These notions of course have died, and we now follow the delightfully Progressive foreign policy that was followed by many illustrious nations before us, such as China, Nazi Germany and the former Soviet Union. Fortunately we’ve redefined the old dinosaur concept of “cowardly” to the newer, more politically correct notion of “prudent aggression”. Yay us!

Why all the saber rattling by Obama with old obsolete weapons. The bombers will never get to their targets. The Chinese have already deployed X-Ray LASERS (4th Generation weapons) in space to use against our bunkers and we are still going to rely on gravity bombs dropped from planes. What would ever leave you to believe that 9-11 was a pre-emptive strike? How many regimes have we taken down and propped up over the past 50 years in the Middle East? How many Bases did we have over in the Middle East before 9-11? Why would you think it would be ok to put a Military base in another country? How would you feel if Pakistan or Iran put one in say Oklahoma or Nebraska? But in your eyes it’s ok for us to put Military bases up in other peoples lands. How can one be so self centered and myopic?
It‘s really hard for me to understand how so many Americans can’t use a little basic logic in order to understand some of these issues.
How would you feel if a Chinese carrier spent a few months in the GOM? What if there was nothing we could do about it? After all they are just protecting their interests (oil). They want to make sure the shipping lines are maintained.
Yes we are the current super power and we can do as we want I suppose but we will not always be the super power and I believe that is why the Golden Rule is found in the Bible.. Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:19amJesus came to save all of mankind, one person at a time. His only requirement for redemption was that we believe in Him as the Son of the Only Living God. But as His Father, He refused to force His love on anyone. He required that we exercise our free will, our greatest gift AND our greatest weakness, to worship Him.
The fact is that the Iranian people, almost to a person, have embraced Islam as their religion, thereby denying the deity of Jesus and His Father in favor of Allah and Mohammad. Though Jesus Christ came to offer them the same pathway to eternal life as He offers us, they have rejected his offer. It is not for me to judge whether they are still “eligible” for redemption or whether their apostacy has separated them from the only way to eternal life forever. But since there is only one way to eternal life with the Father and the Son, Muslims must renounce their apostacy and accept Jesus as their Savior.

If you attack Israel – God will attack you – I don’t think God could be any clearer.
Go sing Kumbaja somewhere else with you false teachings. Now if someone that has turned their back on Israel – repents and confesses that Jesus is their Lord and Savor – they are saved! But I don’t think any followers of Mohammed are ever going to confess JC as their lord!
My suggestion is for you to get out of that “Go along to get along Church” and get into one that is teaching the word of God! It will be eye opening and you’ll find that the Bible warned us of things to come over 2000 years ago and we are seeing those proficiencies open up right before our very eyes!

The Bible nor Christ has ever condemned war or the weapons of war. God recognizes that the hearts of mankind is rooted in evil and violence and it won’t change until the second coming of Christ. When Jesus spoke to the Centurian, he didn’t condemn or speak of his profession, he spoke of his faith. When Peter cut off the dudes ear, Christ didn’t condemn him for what he did, it was for why he did it (note that Christ’s disciple had a weapon on him). I can agree with you that weapons of war are not some pseudo-diety, however until the hearts of all men change to honoring peace over violence, I pray those that honor peace more has the upper hand in the mechanics of war.

God gave man the law and the law is to be enforced. Instead of God doing another flood to mete out justice on man he evolved man through Noah/Moses to receive the law so that they could build their nation upon it and enforce it and sometimes that was a death sentence. We still use the God given law through Moses as a Standard atleast in the Western cultures. Its meant to keep evil in check. Are you saying you can’t handle having a policeman on the corner to protect your street from evil rapists and murderers? Nations also need standing Armies to protect themselves from the evil nations that spring up from time to time and need to be dealt with by the righteous God fearing nations. Its a hard thing to realize but its our situation.

was in desert storm. did not see the daisycutter used……wasn’t much need for a bomb like that in the desert. It’s designed to clear surface troops and foilage. There wasn’t much of that around. Might be they dropped one for phycological effect but I never heard about it. We did get treated to watching the bombardment of their front line from about 30 miles away as we made our approach toward the republican guard. Those were 2000 pounders and we could feel the ground shake and see the flashes and hear the explosions. There is a scene just like that in Saving Private Ryan that was so realistic I was awed watching it. Other than the feel of the ground shaking and the smells it was like someone took my memories and put it on screen. Anyway, would love to “see” the daisy cutter used but you would not be able to be within about 20 miles of the thing without being effected by the concussion. Bearing in mind that my MOS was 12B and specialized in explosive ordnance, mines and such so I kind of have a good idea what I’m talking about. By the way, we got to see the result of a 2000lb bomb getting a direct hit on a T-72. Nothing left but chunks of metal the size of half dollars and quarters…..and a good sized crater.

I apologize, but you have to admit it is slightly irritating when for the last 4 years all I have heard was “tea party this, low taxes that, we need a real conservative in office, back to the constitution, blah blah blah… And then when you get the chance and have the most constitutional, liberty loving, candidate run in decades, now they tell me, vote for the RINO, Ron Paul can’t win. So when you talk the conservative talk, but don’t walk the conservative walk, please be prepared to be called a neoconservative by those who do.

Thank you for sharing the most recent boilerplate to emerge from the Progressives (both GOP and Dem) regarding anybody who is not a progressive candidate (and I’m not only talking about Ron Paul here). What’s fun is that your comment was stand alone and has nothing to do with the article, so it’s one of those “gosh, that really is boilerplate” statements that I so enjoy dealing with. :)

Report Post »I have listened to a number of interviews of Ron Paul. What I find interesting is that all of the press (including the Blaze) dismiss Paul or his ‘followers’ as wacko’s and move on. I found it intriguing for instance the ‘I would not have gone to war with the Nazi’ actually was not about WW2 so much as it was about conscription (the draft) and slavery. Ron Paul’s beliefs for the most part cannot be put into sound bytes; sadly that is his biggest problem in my opinion.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:14am@Medicine in the Head Ron Paul isn’t a true Constitutionalist. His district spends more money than any other district in the US because Ron Paul attaches PORK to bills that are destined to pass…..but then he votes against them to make his voting record look good as he gouges himself with Pork Barrel Spending like a drunkin’ liberal. He has some splain’ to do regarding his Racist and Anti Semitic newsletters he published for 10 years and yet claims no responsibility. He’s older than the life expectancy of a man. So one must vote for his VP because Ron Paul won’t be able or alive to finish what he starts. Unfortunately…..I believe Ron Paul will choose Dennis Kacinich as his running mate. Weak and Weaker.

Really? That’s all you got?
“His district spends more money than any other district in the US because Ron Paul attaches PORK to bills that are destined to pass…..but then he votes against them to make his voting record look good as he gouges himself with Pork Barrel Spending like a drunkin’ liberal.”
I believe he has clarified this and said he is only attempting to return his state’s taxpayer dollars to them the only way he can when government is out of control. Earmarks will no longer be an issue if he was president and Obama wasn’t blowing taxpayer dollars on bs buracracies like there’s no tomorrow.
“He has some splain’ to do regarding his Racist and Anti Semitic newsletters he published for 10 years and yet claims no responsibility.”
Paul has also addressed this many times. The newsletter story has been put to rest and then awoken over and over. And by the way, have you read them? I have read a good majority of them and haven’t found anything that offensive. Sometimes the truth hurts though. Please provide me with a quote that you find to be so racist and Anti-Semitic.
“He’s older than the life expectancy of a man. So one must vote for his VP because Ron Paul won’t be able or alive to finish what he starts.”
That isn’t even a rational thought. Paul bikes 5 miles a day and jogs also. That is a heck of a lot more than I have time to do and $100 says he’s in better shape than you.
So because of those 3 issues, you’re b

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:36amYou’re not allowed to notice that.
The general rule of thumb here is:
1. Domestic spending is by and large unconstitutional (and by and large, most of it is these days).
Report Post »2. Military spending doesn’t actually occur with actual dollars, the cost of maintaining a military that is strewn across the globe in various unconstitutional conflicts is funded by magical elves and pixies, thus, it is no burden on the taxpayer.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 6:39amIsrael can already get to the underground nuke sites in Iran with bunker busters like this. They can also kill their scientists very easily. Why don’t you Neocons allow them to be free and do what needs to be done with Iran and stop hollding them back?
I can answer…You have no faith in God or Israel…You somehow believe these puny little Arabs can go against mighty Israel and do them harm. No way. Israel has a mighty God and it’s strength is built upon His might!
You want to see the threats from Iran gone…get the US administration out of it’s business!

I would rather Dr Paul keep his money and do great things with it instead of giving it back so the moron could spread more hate. Its like the Church that took the money from a drug dealing Mafia boss…. The Pastor said “I will keep it and do good with it…because the devil had it long enough and he was doing evil with it”.
But of course to you that does not make sense does it? You would rather let the KKK have money….Who is the fool now?

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 11:04amSeriously, the term “NEOCON” just makes me laugh and snicker when ever I see it now. Paul supporters use it in every sentence. It is so overused, it has lost any effectiveness when it is used as a personal attack.
When ever I hear Neocon, I have this image in my mind of the knight in Monty Python’s “Holy Grail”. You know, the guy with no legs or arms, hurling insults at his opponent. Only I see him there, with nothing but stumps yelling, “Come back Neocon and fight me, I’ll bite your knee caps off ! ” Get some new material……. baaaddd doggy !
