Want to See What Was in the FBI’s File on Steve Jobs?

FBI Release Steve Jobs File

Steve Jobs was investigated by the FBI in 1991.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released its nearly 200-page file on the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Gawker reports that Jobs underwent investigation in 1991 when he was up for appointment to former President George Bush’s export council. It also notes that a bomb threat in 1985 was investigated and included in the file.

Let’s take a peak inside.

  • Jobs was a hard man to pin down. “Mr. Jobs’ secretary informed [a special agent (SA)] that Mr. Jobs was unavailable for an interview for three weeks. Mr. Jobs could not even see SA for an hour.”
  • Jobs used drugs in the past. “Several friends commented concerning past drug use on the part of Mr. Jobs.” Jobs himself also commented on his past drug use.
  • Jobs was a go-getter. “Several individuals questioned Mr. Jobs’ honesty stating that Mr. Jobs will twist and distort reality in order to achieve his goals.“ One said he ”possesses integrity as long as he gets his way.” Another person said they questioned Jobs’ morality and ethics.
  • Jobs became a more supportive father over time. Several interviewees spoke of Jobs and treatment of the child he had out of wedlock. One said he “abandoned” mother and child but had recently become more supportive of them.

Overall, feelings toward Jobs were mixed. Although, many of the interviews had favorable opinions toward him, recommending him to the position. Some noted that Jobs lived within his financial means, was good at delegating and didn’t exhibit any tendencies toward racism. It very rare anyone considered himself or herself a close friend of Jobs.

I don’t really care what the FBI thinks about Steve Jobs. I’ve vehemently disliked him ever since I heard about his core philosophy, which was “Sometimes people don’t know they need a product until you tell them they need it”. In other words, don’t build a better product, but build your product then convince people they have to have it, instead of a product that may be better and/or less expensive.
Both Bernays and Goebbels, were they alive today, would write books about Apple’s marketing strategy, as it absolutely proves and validates the methods they developed and advanced in their own times.
Jobs was an idea man. His innovation success is directly attributable to none other than those who actually designed and built his products. They are the ones who deserve acclaim more than any.

I agree. Where does the FBI get off releasing such information? One thing to collect it, another thing entirely to dump it to the media several months after his death.

It wasn’t dumped by anyone. It was requested via FOIA, the Freedom of Information Act. Any citizen could have done it as long as the file isn’t sensitive or classified. I mean, even though I’d like to see them, releasing Obama’s school transcripts to the public domain is a gross violation of his privacy in my opinion (although your expectation of privacy when you are a public figure, as both Jobs was and Obama are, is grossly different than for a private citizen).
Next are we going to be outraged at the indignity of cremating his body?

Personally, I’ll wait until Steve Jobs himself personally complains about his privacy being violated before playing the indignation card, so basically never. It’s rather hard to victimize the dead.

The FBI wasn’t keeping taps on Jobs, they were conducting an interview of him and people who knew him in order to determine if he was an acceptable canidate for Bush 41′s administration. Read the article.

This is a standard security clearance paperwork. He was aware of this, and the investigator talked to people he knows and works with, knowing what this is for. This is the same one that those in the military and government. The investigation side is no different.

If you’ve ever made an international call or sent an email to another country, you may not have an FBI file, but you’re info has most assuredly been placed on file somewhere at the NSA. Extra-Continental communications in any form are squarely within their mandate, and they process BILLIONS of overseas phone calls/email on a daily basis.
How worried are you about your Social Security file? It’ll have a copy of your Birth Cert, immunization records, SSN, passport info, every school you’ve ever attended from birth, AND (the big one) a list of every employer you’ve ever had, plus an accounting of every cent you’ve ever made from those employers.

So yeah, be paranoid about what the gov’t has on file about you, because they have a LOT, on everyone, somewhere.

Jobs was not “under investigation.” He was up for an appointment for a government position and this was nothing more than a background investigation that is done for anyone who works with the government on sensitive issues. Jobs is the one that filled out the SF86 form shown in this article. It’s called a questionnaire because the applicant fills it out. Again, the Blaze distorting the issue and trying to make something out of nothing.

      @Holy Ghostbuster

Actually, it was Gawker who, in their article used the phrase ‘background investigation’. Blaze even cites their article; they are simply the messenger.
The FBI did conduct a background investigation on Jobs as a term of his prospective appointment. The product of that investigation was, naturally, placed on record in a file, which could accurately be called an ‘FBI File’ as it was filed by the FBI. These are facts, and are not disputed.
Therefore, you cannot claim distortion of facts from a headline reading “Want to see the FBI’s files from their investigation on Steve Jobs?”, as it is a factual statement.

I once let my college roommate, a Kuwaiti, borrow my cell phone to call home with. Based on that, there is a high likelihood there is a ‘NSA File’ in my name, as monitoring overseas calls is within their mandate. My file with the NSA probably has no details more salacious than ‘A call was placed from his phone to an Arab country in 2008 that lasted 3 minutes’, but being that it’s maintained by a well-known Government alphabet agency, people immediately suspect some dirt on you they’ve been looking into.
My brother-in-law lost his Top Secret clearance recently due to the NSA watching him. His crime? He got divorced, started gambling, and began finding solace talking to women in foreign web-chat rooms, which were monitored. Family change+financial troubles+contact w/ foreign nationals = security risk = clearance pulled…which als

Never liked Steve Jobs. Always that he was the kind of deranged businessman who would have had a great relationship with the Nazis back in the day. He would have helped make them billions using concentration camp Jews for labor, much like how Apple uses cheap-as-dirt Chinese labor now. I have never owned anything Apple and never will.

His success has always been as a salesman. He’s never been the innovative mind the brand loyal fanboys give him credit for.

Steve wozniak was the brains behind apple initially, and jobs drove the company to the brink of bankruptcy with hairbrained ideas until they fired him. He also gets false praise for the success of pixar studios. Pixar was already a fully functioning operation that had toy story almost finished by the time jobs fell into the picture.

And apple’s resurgence in more recent decades has more to do with reproducing things that were already on the market and slapping an apple logo on them than any actual innovation.

“why would anyone cooperate with the FBI?”

Subpoena power mostly. Also, keep in mind that there are currently over TEN THOUSAND Federal Laws in effect. Can you tell for sure you’re not in violation of ANY of them? Because the FBI will know, and even if they don’t, if you’re uncooperative it is within their mandated powers to arrest you until they can ascertain which, if any, federal law you’ve violated.
THAT is a very powerful incentive to cooperate. Personally, though not that I’ve had experience with this, were I asked to be interviewed by the FBI, I wouldn’t even look in their direction without the presence of a lawyer for on-the-spot real-time legal advice.
