Want to Take a Ride Down a Super-Long Slide…Backwards?

Although merry-go-rounds and teeter totters may be a distant memory on most American play grounds, slides have remained a main attraction for the most part. But the following slides in Japan put the short, plastic, static-cling-inducing contraptions frequented by U.S. school children to shame.

Check out this rider’s point-of-view footage from a man going down the slide frontwards and then backwards:

The poster of this video states the slide is located in Japan where “mom’s have no word for worry.” But believe it or not, slides such as this are actually pretty common in Japan. Japan Probe points out these two slides in a park in Nagano prefecture and another in Okayama prefecture.

Watch those slide rides here:

But neither of these hold a candle to this next one. Who can forget the viral sensation posted on YouTube in 2009 of the 82 meter long slide sitting on a mountain on western Kyushu’s coastal plain? The video has more than 2 million views.

Watch a rider tackle that slide, which he says made him “scream like a little girl” and caused him to “lose feeling in my rump” but was still the best slide ride of his life. (Note: Video contains some profanity):

Would you go down any of these slides?

    Oh, YEAH!!!!

When I was a kid back last century, some of the grocery stores has containers that they would put your bags of groceries in and they’d put it on the same kind of roller track. I always wanted to ride down one of those and this is just something that is bigger, longer and looks alot more fun!!!!

Looks like a lot of fun. Things you can do when you can’t be sued for every little cut a child gets.

Those slides are awesome! Super fun, and you can stand up on them. I used to take my Boys at the ages of 4 and 5 down those things every which way. Nothing but smiles and laughs the whole time. They’re actually very very safe, although I think we go a little too far on the safety these days in this country. I’ve seen fantastic wooden playground equipment removed and replaced with plastic crap cause some kid got a splinter (yes, that really was all that happened). And what’s with the removal of merry-go-rounds?!? I loved those things…… But if you get a chance, go play on one of these slides.

Yeah, man! They removed that wooden stuff when I was a kid and replaced it with plastic. It sucked because whenever you slid down a slide, you’d get a painful shock from touching the metal bolts. I prefered the wooden ones.

Ever seen the jumps they have at the local snowboard parks? Or skateboard parks. We still do allow dangerous things here in the USA. At least for now.

Just to let everyone know, these slides are actually pretty safe, the rollers and angle are such that you can’t really get a lot of speed. And for the best ride, you usually sat on cardboard, or as I made for my family, small pieces of Plywood with rope handles that you sat on, That took the bumping out. I will say the Japanese put a lot of money into their park systems, and they were well kept and maintained. Not one person pooping or setting up a tent anywhere.

Not to fond of their politics, but the people are hard working, fun loving, respectful people. Very aware of traditional values, family, and their elders. When they start a construction project it is finished post haste. They worship as a part of their daily life, not just giving it lip service or the weekly stop by. They are frugal and independent, tolerant of others to a fault. I could keep going but I wouldn’t know where to stop, they are amazing people. I reiterate this is the people I’m speaking of, not the government or politics.

There is NO WAY a US Government Agency or State Agency would allow anything like this here due to regulations, building codes, insurance policies. They would be labeled a “death slide” by bureacratic entities.

OTHER HAND: If they were allowed to be built, Union Labor would cost 5-6 milion in costs not including materials which would cost another 2-3 million shipped directly from China.
