WaPo Editor’s Startling Defense of Catholics: ‘Maybe the Founders Were Wrong to Guarantee Free Exercise of Religion’

We’ve covered the hot debate raging between the Obama administration and the Catholic Church on this site. And we’ve covered plenty of arguments for and against the Obamacare mandate that businesses, through their insurers, offer free contraception. But we haven’t covered a defense quite like this. It goes like this: “Maybe the founders were wrong to guarantee free Exercise of religion,” but they did and the administration needs to respect that.

Wait, what?

That‘s what Washington Post editor Melinda Henneberger told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews last night while defending Catholics. Here’s the full quote:

“Maybe the Founders were wrong to guarantee free exercise of religion in the First Amendment but that is what they did and I don’t think we have to choose here.”

She went on to to say that “…What [the Obama administration is] doing is guaranteeing people, you know, these Catholic outfits and others can’t serve the populations that they were called to serve.” That’s a good point. But the comment about the founders seems startling. Newsbusters may have put it best when it said, “Henneberger’s larger point was defensive of the Catholic Church and of religious liberty. However, her comment on the First Amendment was poorly phrased.”

You can watch the segment below:

Athiests want their cake and eat it too.
They want the church out of state, which I still can’t find in the constitution.
Then they want the state to regulate the church.
Freedom of religion not from religion appears in a personal letter to the Danbury
Baptists from Jefferson. They’ve twisted the meaning of the words and used
a personal letter from Jefferson as law.

WQhat most people outside of the Catholic Church don’t realize is that the Church is very liberal. In Massachusetts there are so many upset Catholics about the Bishop supporting oliberal democrats. For the Church to complain to Obama and read a letter at Mass is huge. This is Not the P T l reading a letter. As far as i know, in the history of our Country a letter has never been read at service against the President. This has very little to do with birth control, but is a mandate of church control. We will win this easy, Obama knows, he is just trying to squirm out now.

Are people fools enough to allow ANY President to have the POWER to give you a waiver. Does having that waiver get you back on board his agenda? A Right granted by your Creator is now being given or taken away by the Government based on who runs the Government at the time. Are you foolish enough to believe that they won’t take it away from you later?

This is a distraction of warfare on your rights… The discussion has been changed from the REPEAL of Obamacare to an Obamacare policy issue! The whole HC must be repealed not just bits of it! Once implemented the HC laws will remove the Chapel from the Hospital (Seperation of Church and State) The Bible in the Nightstand will be GONE! (Seperation of Church and State) One lawsuit against a person praying for a loved one will result in Prayer being banned in the Government regulated health facility (Seperation of Church and State)
This HC law will be able to spread to EVERY aspect of our society and it seems it trumps your Constitutional rights!

The good news is that the unanimous court decision from the supremes last month threw out the Jefferson letter stuff and instructed courts to base further decisions on the first amendment author Madison. Media people usually have a limited capacity to read outside the supreme leaders talking points.
The hatred of religious convictions, symbols, and faith absolutely appall the supreme leader and him far left democrat followers and rino. Did you ever think there would be a day where the democrats would suggest eliminating the first amendment? They are. Did you ever think you see a day most politicians would want to through out the fourth amendment? They are. We know there will be a big push for the second amendment to be thrown out by the dems and the media. It’s telling that the media now suggests the founders were wrong.liberals freely state god got marriage wrong. God? they freely say Jesus got the importance of kids wrong. The arrogance of the establishmnt knows no bounds.

Regarding liberal Catholic Bishops…the chickens are finally coming home to roost. Lets see if the show-down results in the liberal Catholic Bishops caving in. In Massechusettes they caved with Romneycare/Obamacare. Romney would not grant a waiver for them.

I once spoke with a high ranking conservative Catholic Priest and he said that there are 225 Catholic Bishops and that 200 of them ought to be fired. The lib Bishops don’t make any sense folks. They vote and support liberal Democrats and then complain when liberal Democrats do what liberal Democrats do and try to put them out of business. Make no mistake about this, if the Bishops cave (and they have historically been soft on abortion), they will be put out of business because they will have approved of abortion on demand. Abortion on demand is what we are talking about with this Obama order.

People will be pissed and the vanity of political leaders will force them to beat thier chests and say “he is wrong, the american people will not tolorate this“ ”we will stop it”. Then a few weeks go by, they go to the local bar and get drinks with thier democrat friends and forget about it. The media does thier job by changing the subject to whatever the supreme leader wants to do next, like gun banning.
Then we wake up with no first, second, fourth and tenth amendments to the constitution. Then the local university starts dragging priest and pastors out of churchs and turning them over to the supreme leader for public ridicule and prosicution and yes…..the cycle starts over because establishment republicans want to cut deals and sell our kids into bondage (also currently unconstitutional)

Oh, and you’re right, the 1st Amendment forbids CONGRESS from passing into law a specific religion. That does NOT mean “no mention of religion in a US,State,County, or City environment! We KNOW the Bishops in MA are VERY LIBERAL–but so are many of their communiants! The Church has laws and they are solid, but PEOPLE “feel sorry” and bend the rules allowing many things that should not occur–Kennedys and others who claim to be Catholic because they were “born” in the Church, but who actually disagree with almost everything the Church stand for!

The “bleed hearts” in the church (clergy and laity), would have the Church be a social justice organization rather than a bearer of the Gospel of Christ which includes helping neighbor but is much more concerned with a person’s soul and relationship with God through Jesus under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Others have commented about other large cities thinking that Catholics throughout the United States are like city liberals and/or progressive. Members of the Catholic Church, Evangelical Protestant Churches, LDS (Mormons), non-denominational groups and others groups of people that understand Jesus true message of “choose life,” will completely back the Bishops concerning this intrusion into Church responsibility.

The liberal Catholic organizations that backed Obamacare and Romneycare, (many of which organizations receive funding from Soros and other progressive sources), have been double cross by the administration and are now screaming “foul”! Dance with the devil you may get burned. . .

This is stupid and the Obama administration should move forward with this. Take hospitals, for instance. When you go to seek medical care at a hospital, do you care if the hospital is Catholic or Protestant? Why would a nurse or a doctor care as long as there is a job to do? There are all different types of faiths working at hospitals who should have access to the same care as others working in other settings doing the same work. This is another instance of the control that religious organizations want over the health and well being of women and children. They don’t care about people. They only care about keeping control.

Speaking of caring, apparently you don’t care if the hospital is there or not. The same beliefs about the sacredness of human life that Catholics live by are the reason why they FOUND and OPERATE hospitals. So if you are happy to have them shut down so that your particular vision of humans free from any accountability to God for their God-given ability to reproduce can be imposed on people of all faiths, then who is doing the NOT CARING here.

Or did I miss something, and you have founded a hospital somewhere?

How about the government dictating to you what product I MUST buy, ie health insurance that is in compliance to its own dictates…? If I don’t like the dictates of the Catholic Church, I can join another religion, or no religion at all. But, in order to be a “compliant American,” I HAVE to buy health insurance now, or face a fine. THIS is control…of men, women, AND children.

Here’s the thing, I’m a working atheist with insurance that pays for my birth control (Mirena – it’s fantastic). I have previously worked for employers who did not cover birth control but were happy enough to cover meds that ensure 85 year old men can still get erections. Not fair but it’s the facts of life. During those times I bought and paid for my own birth control. No big deal, it’s not expensive and the poor can get it for free or nearly so at county health clinics – they just have to go. I’ve seen many a poor woman at the county clinic with all 5 or more of her kids in the waiting room while she waited to be seen for birth control.

The great thing about living in America is that you don‘t have to be treated at a religious medical institute and you don’t have to work at one especially if birth control is the deciding factor on your list. Work elsewhere or move to a more metropolitan area that allows access to more choices. Live and let live. If religious institutes won’t provide birth control, that is there right. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I live in the Bible Belt. I wouldn’t be caught dead at a religious hospital, so I go elsewhere. Choice. Simple as that. You can’t force people to believe what you believe. Period.

Government is caring and charitable Church based organizations are not. This is the mind numbed brain washing that passes for liberal thought these days.

The biggest question that I think many are getting distracted from is WHY does any business have to pay for contraception as part of health insurance? Only in this current administration did contraception become a government mandated right for all. They aren’t even arguing about the ability to pay as being a factor. The simple fact that one person‘s coverage may include free abortion pills means everyone’s insurance must. That is the over stepping control freak government that is the issue.
We get caught up in their game of distraction, making this about separation of Church and State, while the real issue of over reaching government control and our liberties dying to the sound of thunderous applause goes on unchecked.
When the administration makes a monstrous offense against the liberties of We the People every morning with it’s coffee, it becomes difficult to decide which offense to pursue impeachment charges on first. By the time congressional hearings could have gotten underway for how the health care law was enacted, it was old news replaced by twenty other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Talk about the best defense being a good (never ending, flood of) offensiveness.

Fox, No women is being denied birth control or the morning after pill. There is a vending machine at a college that distributes the morning after pill – how hard is it to get if they have vending machines? You are putting forth the MSM’s false argument. The issue is should religious institutions be mandated by the federal government to pay for services they do not believe in? Should they be forced to go against their doctrine by a government whose constitution states otherwise? And to further say the Catholic Church does not care for people belies the many charitable institutions that are being affected by this mandate. Access to birth control and the morning after pill is there – that is not the point – cost is also not the point as the cost is minimal and in some cases can be obtained free of charge. The point is religious freedom from government intrusion and everyone should be fearful of that – even Atheists. I’m not Catholic but feel the need to support their struggles against an administration that is chipping away at their freedom because next time they might be chipping away at mine.

If those who work at the hospital want their birth control funded by the hospital insurance, they should quit working at the hospital. They can go to Planned Parenthood for almost free or free birth control or they can pay for their own if they want to keep the job. They know what the insurance will cover when they are given their insurance information. No one forces them to take the job. Besides, birth control is not a health issue. Nobody is compelling a churhc to provide this, what they are saying is, if you operate a unversity, hospital, nursing home, etc. the insurance for employees at those institutions may have the option to have their birth control covered. This is an employment issue, not religious. 20+ States already require the Catholic Church to provide such coverage. This is a large hissy fit being thrown by the bishops.

America will suffer a total economic collapse in the coming months and will be joined with Mexico and Canada into the North American Union, a precursor to the One World Government that will be headed by the Antichrist. I lament the coming death of our Mighty Stars and Stripes, it is an unbearable Sorrow. Obama is 10,000 Times more Evil than Adolph Hitler ever thought of being though few realize it or even begin to realize what his Evil plans for America and White people are. Evil will triumph for a little while but then our very Creator Jesus Christ will Slay them all with the Sword of Truth! Come sooner Most High God, Come sooner.

Birth control comes in two basic forms: Self control and pills. (leave out condoms…you can get them in any washroom).
Why do I have to pay for someone else’s lack of self control? Answer that question and we can move on.

Spoken like a true male who will never pay the physical consequences of rape, child birth, uterine cancer or endometriosis – all of which birth control can prevent and/or control. You’re also behind the times. There are plenty of options for women besides condoms, abstinence and pills. The best options inter-uterine devices that last 5 years at time. That aside, I do not endorse government treading over our religious liberties or lack there of. However, here is the turd in the punch bowl: All of these religious institutions are granted state federal tax dollars….You take money from the government, they’ll take from you. Religious institutions should rely on themselves like any capable person of worth.

There is also a point never mentioned in imagining male-female health care equivalents. It is always said that if men get Viagra, women should get birth control. Viagra is for erectile DYSFUNCTION (health problem, when something is NOT working correctly). Birth control is to keep a properly operating reproductive system from functioning as intended. It is NOT a health issue in & of itself. That distinction should clarify that these are NOT equivalent health issues! Justify it some other way….

As a practicing Roman Catholic I feel the greater danger comes from all the Cinos (Catholics in name only) out there. People like Mathews, Pelosi, Sibelius, Biden, Sebelius, Senators Casey and Kerry et al, and so called Catholic institutions like Georgetown and Notre Dame who have given their allegiance to the Obama regime. These people should be excommunicated immediately; the problem is that the American Catholic bishops have kowtowed for too long to the Democrat party; they served as patsies for the Kennedy family, Cardinal Cushing in Boston was on Joe Kennedy’s payroll and now their chickens have come home to roost. Faithful Catholics should prepare for the fate that Catholics suffered in Communist countries like Poland and we must go underground; many of our priests and bishops have already become apostates for Obama and will not support us. The situation for traditional religions in the New American World State is perilous and the shadow of State sponsored persecution is palpable. America delenda est.

The Founders did that for many reasons. mostly because they were forced by the Baptists, whose blood is the only Christian Blood that cries from the Ground against other Christians from Mass. in the 600′s to North Carolina at the Battle of Alamance.

It was the baptist who could not marry, own land, gather for worship, establish schools, or be in Government under Gov. Tryon, who had a price on the head of Daniel Boone.

It was the baptists who went into the Mtns and established the first American Rep., Watauga and George III did not fire a shot in emanciapting them.

It was the Baptists who changed the game in the South at the Battle of Kings Mtn when the Cong. was just about to surrender in York PA.

It was Kings Mtn Hero Sevier who had three Cousins who he met with regularly East of Knoxville, Houston, Austin, and Crockett.

It was Baptists still being imprisoned for not paying the Parsonage Tax in Mass even into 1806, despite the 1st Amendment.

So who wrote this all out of history?
Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, Puritans and Presbyterians.

    Where is Cornwalis’ Surrender Sword?

Not the Whitehouse, nor the Rotunda of the Capital, and not in the Office of the JC of Staff.

The Holy Grail of the moment of the Birth of America because of the muzzle of a gun is in the John Gano Chapel in a little known Baptist college.

More Baptists were tortured and killed by allegedly christian Colonies than witches.

It is a Baptist Nation. Learn to love it.

I left the Baptist church at the age of 17 because I got tired of hearing the “n word” from the pastor.
Bigotry is not what Jesus taught us, be it against blacks or other christians. You might want to think on that a bit Mr. “Baptist nation”.

I attend the Catholic Church these days, and they certainly have their faults too, but they do a much better job of “loving thy neighbor” in my opinion.

The protection of religious faith is the foundation for freedom. That is why it is the very first aspect of the “Bill of Rights”. There is no other place in the world that has freedom. Only the U.S. For our founders believed that all rights as human beings come from God. The governments sole purpose is to protect these God given rights.

Liberals think that rights should come from government. But when governments give rights, they eventually take them away. Will any other government ever last even 100 years? Forget about them lasting as long as ours has.

Problem is, they’re in the position holding the power (politicians, Judges, etc) and us Christians are tolerant and law abiding. They know it and have cornered us: If we do nothing they win and if we do something they demonize, clamp down and win. What did Daniel do when he was trapped? He prayed and trusted in God. How about Paul and all the Prophets? They prayed and trusted in God…

I know, I know we need to be retroactive. Believe me, I have gone to many Tea parties, town halls, wrote to congress, senate, state. Fought gay agenda, had bank account compromised, threats, etc. But you know what, God got me through it and when God’s timing was “right” that’s when action stepped in. Please, we all need to agree to pray as a nation fort he country to come back to God and to leave the fight in God’s hands. If we trust God to take it he’ll prompt us at the right time to do something. Please people, we can not do this without God. Pray as in James 1:5 for Wisdom and direction!!!

First, I can’t expect Melinda Henneberger from the Washington Post to stand up to defend the Catholic Church any further than I could pick her up and hurl her. If this story was played out with pro and con guest speakers it was definitely skewed to meet their expected outcome. Typical BSNBC.
