WaPo: Special Prosecutor Will Charge George Zimmerman for Martin Shooting

George Zimmerman Will Faces Charges in Trayvon Martin Shooting: Report

The Washington Post is reporting that George Zimmerman will face charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. It’s unclear what those charges will be, but the newspaper is reporting that Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey will make the announcement as early as this afternoon or early evening. NBC, among other outlets, is reporting that the event is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. ET.

The Post reports more about Corey’s potential announcement:

Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla.

Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Martin family, said this week that Corey’s office had asked where Trayvon’s parents would be each day this week. They arrived Wednesday in Washington for a civil rights conference organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton, where they are scheduled to speak. [...]

Corey said Monday that she would not bring the case before a grand jury, which was expected to convene this week. She said her decision to forgo the grand jury should not be viewed as a factor in determining whether charges will be filed.

An attorney for Martin’s parents also said at a press conference on Wednesday that possible charges in the shooting were expected “shortly.”

“We’re on pins and needles, but we’re waiting patiently,” Sybrina Fulton, Martin’s mother, said in an interview with FOX News on Tuesday morning. “We’re hoping that we’ll get a call very soon, and that she will meet with us and tell us what her decision is. So we really don’t know, we are being patient and we are staying prayerful.”

These developments are unfolding just one day after Zimmerman’s attorneys pulled out of the case, stating that they have been unable to contact their client. In addition to concerns over communication, they expressed worries about their former client’s physical and emotional well-being.

Here’s how Reuters reported about the rift between Zimmerman and his representation:

George Zimmerman’s lawyers withdrew from his defense on Tuesday after the man who shot and killed an unarmed black Florida teenager telephoned prosecutors directly, contacted a television journalist and set up a website all without their knowledge.

Defense lawyers Craig Sonner and Mark Uhrig said they lost contact with their client on Sunday and were concerned for his mental and physical health following a wave a protests across the country that have demanded Zimmerman’s arrest for the death of Trayvon Martin, 17.[...]

The Post claims that the latest information about charges comes from a law enforcement official close to the ongoing investigation.

According to The Associated Press, on Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder also said the Justice Department is conducting a thorough and independent review of the case after launching its own investigation three weeks ago.

      this young man no matter what you decide he is or was is still the victim of this man who took it upon himself to follow him and not even close to his residence and shot him down. think of it as if it were your child no matter what your child does you have unconditional love for that child and even if this child had been in some trouble none of that warrants this man to shot him. I’m not making any statement weather mr zimmerman is guilty or innocent but he needs to have a trial to determine what happened because a life was lost and what ever you may think life of anyone has value.

      Indoctrination comes from the only giving one side of the argument credence. Let’s pretend that your son was walking through a black neighborhood and was shot and killed by a black man claiming self defense. Would you still be okay with the courts not charging the man? Would you be upset if the media made the shooter the victim and your son the instigator?
      The issue is larger than race. Plain and simple. It’s the media controlling you by choosing what to report. How about how our troops are getting dosed with Prozac and how it impairs their impulse control?
      What about the women whose children are being taken away by Child Protective Services because the parents don’t want their child vaccinated?
      Enlighten yourself. Read this…it makes sense….just keep your mind open.

    The position of blacks and of the DOJ is simple. They are anti-white. How dare a white person take up for himself and save his own life? That is there attitude.       This has the potential to end up just like OJ’s trial, and just like Casey Anthony’s trial… Where intellectual logic simply does not prevail… When you seek a confrontation and then you do the killing, then you should face punishment… Afterall, the confrontation did not seek you… If you dance around in Poison Ivy and develop a rash, then should you just stand your ground by destroying the plant entirely??? Does that make sense, when you chose to dance with the plant on your own recognizance in the first place??? Better yet, jump in the backyard with a pitbull, get bit and then shoot the dog??? Claim “Self-defense”- Just tell that to the owner of the pup and see what he thinks… Bottomline: Zimmerman tried to pick on someone he thought was suspicious, Trayvon didnt like it (just like anbody else with testicles) so Zimmerman shot him in return and then claimed self-defense- instead of leaving his stereotypical, judgemental, preconcieved notions (aka RACIST beliefs) to himself and going about his business… Someone should pick on Zimmerman til he fights back, then blow him away… and don’t forget- claim “Self-Defense”

      Nothing wrong with a trial, they have to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The trick will be finding an impartial jury.

      None of us were there that night. Zimmerman‘s story being more believable than the media’s narrative does not preempt a trial if the prosecutor believes there is sufficient evidence of criminal behavior.
