‘War Criminal’: CPAC Audience Divided in Heckling/Honoring Cheney & Rumsfeld

WASHINGTON (AP/The Blaze) — Former Vice President Dick Cheney joked Thursday that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld may have more influence on President Barack Obama‘s national security policies than the president’s current aides.

Cheney made a surprise appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Thursday to present the former two-time defense secretary with a Defender of the Constitution award. The vice president joked that Rumsfeld twice served as defense secretary and added that “maybe if we give him a third term, he might get it right.”

The award ceremony was not without the “usual spirited exercise” of protest at CPAC as a number of libertarian detractors decried Cheney as a “war criminal”:

Townhall’s Greg Hengler managed to capture video of the outspoken protesters who were quickly escorted from the hotel conference room:

A steady stream of Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s supporters also stood and walked out of the tribute for Rumsfeld, a protest planned in advance in part by the Campaign for Liberty, Fox News reports.

The former defense secretary was also booed when took to the stage. There seemed to be a back-and-forth between Paul supporters and other CPAC attendees trying to drown each other out while Rumsfeld watched.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney then took the stage, but the heckling did not stop in what was an amazing display of friction. Someone in the crowd yelled to Cheney above the din “draft dodger.” Nonetheless, the crowd is overwhelmingly warm to Rumsfeld, who eventually took his place in the presentation.

Anyone care to remember the Presidential Election of 2008? And the price we are paying for it now? It was disgusting to hear that person shout out that remark. And it’s far from the truth. We should never tolerate that. The brain-dead at MSNBC love it and that by it self should tell everyone something. Under that asshat’s (the coward who shouted that out) ideals, every President and VP is a war criminal, I suppose. I will never forget the old Iraqi women, having voted for the first time ever (and risking her life to do so) raised her purple finger high in the air and said, “God Bless Bush . . .anyone who says different you can go to Hell”! For those who are serious about restoring this nation let us resolve to stand united, we may not be perfect, and may not agree 100% on everything all the time, but we’re the only hope America has, indeed, the world has. God Bless Dick Cheney! And to that coward who shouted that remark, I say, “You can go to Hell”!

“It was disgusting to hear that person shout out that remark. And it’s far from the truth.”

Why disgusting? Joe Wilson bleated out out “You lie!” to the president in a joint session of Congress and became a Tea party hero. Why should you have a problem with someone calling Cheney a draft dodger (true, by the way) at a pay for admission conservative conference?

You’re passionate but inconsistent. In other words, rhetorical, nothing more than demagogy. I consider that to be ultimately destructive to the conservative cause.

She said to keep the e-mails and letters coming as that is the only way they can be sure of what WE THE PEOPLE want.. Remember that THEY WORK FOR US, not the other way around even if it doesn’t always seem like it..2012 is coming and we need to work to replace those that are only there to line their own pockets instead of doing the peoples business.. This is part of the reason why Obama will probably get another term. The Republicans, in general (and i mean ALL, including regular people) cant act with some type of class.

I’m not a Ron Paul guy…don’t know enough about him or his views. Ronald Reagan has always been a hero of mine. Paul seems like the real thing( understands and follows the constitution). It seems that we’ve strayed so far as a nation from our constitutional beginnings, that when someone such as Ron Paul comes along, his views seem alien and bad to alot of folks. Take a look at where we are now, after decades of crap from both parties. They’ve absolutely gutted our country in the name of free trade….still buying the free trade crap? 9/11 crime of the century, along with its partner, the anthrax attacks….Still buying it?

We must focus on Defense, Economy and jobs and to do that we must cut spending as is said. But we need not only our GREAT freshmen class, but also our establishment politicians as well if we are to defeat Obummer in ‘12, and create a larger majority in the house and get the majority in the Senate. But RINO’s such as Snowe, Collins, etc, we do not need. Cheney is a staunch Conservative and Hawk when it comes down to it. It was great to know he was at CPAC after his health issues in recent months.

Dawg of Gawd: and anyone else RE: WMD’s In April 2004 King Abdullah of Jordon announced (to the world) that Jordanian Intelligence had uncovered and stopped a plot by Al Quaeda which had planned to use chemical weapons (WMD’s) in a massive attack on his country’s capital. This group of Al Quaeda was involved with senior Iraqi forces (probably the Red Guard) had just prior to U.S. invasion, secretly shipped out tons of this WMD – probably to Syria. It’s true, although the MSM’s never reported on it. If you do a little DD you’ll find it. Also, Kenneth Timmerman has written about this. Also, as far as this Bush/Cheney lying about WMD‘s let’s remember that the best intelligence agencies in the world – Egypt, Jordan, Russia, Israel, Britain, and our own CIA – all believed that Saddam had WMD’s . And if you look a little further back you can watch Gore’s speech on just how dangerous Saddam was, what a threat he was to us, as well as other Democrat leaders in Congress. So can we cut-out this ‘crap’ about Bush/Cheney lying about WMD’s . They were there prior to our invasion. And IF Saddam wasn‘t interested in nuclear WMD’s then why was he buying yellow cake? I‘ll be damned if I’d believe what Saddam had to say. Just like all wars, more facts are revealed many years later. I think more relevant to today is the fact that we have Obama (Soros’ water boy) in the White House and Hillary (Soros’ soulmate) as Secretary of State! Seems I remember these two useful tools slamming Petraeus pretty good when they served on the Senate Intel Committee. Hillary flat out called Petraeus a liar and now she and Obama are his boss! Ya think us common sense citizens can stay focused on defeating these people in 2012? Sheezzzzz!

Thank you! But regardless of WMD’s…….Sadaam continuously refused to let UN inspectors in……this was his condition of surrender. How many times, especially after 9/11, could we allow him to tell us no after WE left him in power. It was a mistake that had to be corrected based on HIS unwillingness to comply with his conditions of surrender in the first Gulf War.

It was political correctness that left Sadaam in power……and American apologetics that continues to plague us with the Iraq War. He was a brutal dictator who needed to go and we should have sent him to hell the first time! It’s a funny funny thing but the Iraq War may be the only thing that saves the Middle East from complete Islamic control. They are a burgeoning democracy……won‘t that chap the left’s butt if everything goes to hell in a handbasket except the government that WE helped put in place.

Sulfuric acid. Used primarily as an expanding agent for conventional explosives. hardly the “smoking gun could be a mushroom cloud” that constituted the majority of claims by President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Further, claiming that they “probably” worked with the Red Guard and “probably shipped stuff off to Syria is nothing more than conjecture. And if all the best intelligence agencies in the world believed he had WMDs, how could they all be wrong? And yet they were. The same way all of Congress was wrong. Why? Because they were all sharing faulty information, rather than seeking and verifying on their own. And they were getting from us.

Sadaam buying yellow cake? Not true. The only yellow cake was that which was sealed after the first Gulf War. As for trying to buy it from Niger, the CIA said in an internal memorandum that “we no longer believe that there is sufficient reporting to conclude that Iraq pursued uranium from abroad.” That was June 17, 2003 — nearly five months after Bush’s 16 words in the SOTU address. Meanwhile Cheney had been busy going to Langley to force feed “evidence” from a drunken Iraqi cab driver named Curve Ball into a threat assessment. And of course, it’s been “pretty well confirmed” that Mohammad Atta was in Prague.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0Odd429CsA

Were we duped? Don’t ask me, ask Colin Powell or his chief of staff (or Judith Miller).

You call that “crap.” I call that disturbing. Certainly not enough cause to invade a sovereign nation who, in fact, had not attacked the U.S and posed no imminent threat – as it turns out.

I respect the goals of the changeover to the freshmen class and smaller government, less spending. We desperately need to do that. I think if we call Don Rumsfeld “old news” though we are going to be putting aside some serious defense wisdom that is essential to America’s future.

Funky, Don Rumsfeld—a former fighter pilot—was encorceled by too many Air Force Pentagon smoke & mirror Powerpoint presentations and really believed in the whole “shock and awe” myth, where the AF would precision-bomb the hell out of our enemies and they would surrender. This led, before the Iraq War, to his reorganizing the military, “plussing-up” of the AF and funding its new gee-whiz fighters, exotic bombers and “brilliant” weapons systems and a corresponding draw-down of our naval and land forces. When the Iraq War started it became apparent that the old military adage was true, and that you can try to bomb a country back into the Stone Age but unless you put a troop with a rifle and bayonet on top of the enemy’s hill to occupy it you have not accomplished much of any durable worth. Rumsfeld’s problem was that he disparaged and defunded our “boots on the ground”capabilities, and it cost us a lot of dead and wounded American kids in Iraq and Afghanistan because we simply didn’t have enough ground units and equipment and ammo to do the job as it should have been done. Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki was quickly fired for correctly pointing out that Rummy wanted to send too few ground units to win quickly in Iraq and effectively occupy and administer the country after the war. There is, and never has been, a cheap and easy way to win a war, and we and Rumsfeld learned that to our sorrow.

      @riseandshine

9-11 WAS not a False Flag Operation….it was a terrorist attack by Al Queda. While I don’t always agree with Dick Chenney and Donald Rumsfeld, I do believe that they love their country. They are tremendously intelligent men and deserve a modicum of respect. Sometimes I read this site and I despair. Some people on the right are just as rabid as the ones on the left. The Far-Right said that Bill Clinton attacked Iraquis to take the focus off of his domestic issues….That is wrong also. The people on this forum with their “Obama is snorting coke in the White House” are no better that the one accusing these two men of plotting 9-11 or calling them war criminals. And it is all a distraction from the work that needs to be done to put our country back on the right track. Just because you disagree with someone does not mean you have to demean and disparage that individual. I personally hate every thing that this sitting president has done but I will not get in the gutter and roll with some of the extreme on this website. I have more respect for myself and for the office that he holds. I hated it when the left did it to President Bush so for some to turn around a do this to another president and say “Well they did it first” is no justification. If you don’t agree with the Iraq war, fine but that does not make someone who sent the troops there a war criminal. Quite frankly that cheapen the name for the ones it truly applies: Hitler, Pol Pot…. We loose the argument if all we do is sit back and name call. Quiet frankly it makes us appear less intelligent.

Lets see the total sides of the argument – Conservatives wish to save the country, and Obama wishes to destroy it? Yes I tend to agree that the former secretary Rumsfield has more influence on the defense of the country compared to those of Obama’s.

At the least Rumsfield was not introduced as the ‘friend of cheynee.’

It is amazing how Libertarians can be so dumb as to chant the same exact slogans as the Socialists, Communists and Progressives and never figure out that they are the most useful of all idiot. The “war criminal” charge is based on the assumptions that: because some kooks (Libertarians?) slipped through boot camp and missbehaved that Cheney personally intended they actions, but he was highly ineffective if that is the case considering how few cases there where; and when women or children died in a battle zone it was the direct intent from the top rather than the risk of battling freaks that bring their wives and kids to the battle zone just in case they can become martyrs. The death of “innocents” in Afghanastan, Iraq, Palestine, etc. implies that in a war between vastly opposing views on how a society should function that anyone who is not carrying a weapon has not chosen a side. In these conflicts very few have not chosen a side and most would consider themselves a casualty for one side or the other, i.e. we killed a bad guy or one of the good guys died in our cause.
Libertarian principles are the true nature of conservatism, Libertarians including Ron Paul are the biggest fools on the political spectrum and consist of an equal mix of drug addicts that only want to legalize drugs so they can be stoned 24/7 and the kids who cried and took the ball home when they couldn’t get their way. It is great to believe in principles, but it actually requires intelligent to successfully implement them.

OK! The deciding factor. I was going to look real hard at Ron Paul, but after reading the disrespectful actions of the backers of Ron Paul at CPAC, I‘ve changed my mind as I don’t want to be associated with rowdy, hateful type people who try to shout down a speaker for reasons they believe to be real. Did Obama serve in the military? Did Clinton? These few people following Ron Paul around making hateful noise will end up making sure Paul doesn’t have a chance in hell. That’s how I see it, because this example at CPAC was all I needed to know I don’t want my Pres. followed by this type to disrupt any and all events they perceive not in their interest. This is AMERICA!

Since Clinton and the others were not mentioned why are they relavant to Cheney’s cowardice when faced with actaully fighting in a war? They each own their own pasts. Cheney is an evil beast. Ron Paul? People are still hating him? What policy of his drives you rinos or ignorant people nuts? Some have stated that he carries the economic policies of lyndon larouche. Really? Ron Paul belives in BIGGER government? lyndon larouche was a marxist with fascist leanings along with anti-semitism. Wow, I thought Ron Paul himself stated his beliefs as nearly the polar opposite of lyndon larouche.

Ron Paul is a Libertarian. While some may not agree with his stance on every issue, you can at least see why he takes a stand on those issues. He votes, every time, for the most liberty abiding choice. For those of you who unshamefully mock and exploit falsehoods about him, you are siding against liberty. I did not say disagree with him, I said openly mock him and exploit falsehoods.

His record stands as a testament to his ideals. Like it or not, agree or not, he does vote with an eye single to liberty. Period.

This rather demonstrates why Paul will never get the nomination let alone be elected President. Too m uch of his support comes from people with a fundamentalist (in the worst understanding) view of politics and the Constitution where if one does something they think is unconstitutional that person is no better than a criminal and should be hated and hounded out of office and public discourse, if not jailed. They can be as rabid as the leftist wackos, in some cases making common cause with them the same way marxists make common cause with jihadists. These “conservatives” see 15% deviation as far more significant than 85% agreement. They don’t know how to work with others and hold coalitions together.
