Warren Jeffs’ Polygamous Cult Accused of Sending a Cat Buried Alive in Concrete as a Threat to a Former Church Member (Warning: Graphic Pics & Video)

The controversy surrounding Warren Jeffs, the polygamous leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) who was sentenced to life in prison last year over his relationships with underage girls, is never-ceasing. Last time The Blaze covered Jeffs, we told you about his dangerous fasting that landed the faith leader in the hospital in critical condition.

Now, nearly a year later, he’s back in the news with a fresh accusation being waged against his fundamentalist followers — that they sent a cat buried alive in concrete as a threat to a man who had abandoned the radical sect. While shocking, former followers claim that such an action is common among adherents.

This story, like many of the others surrounding Jeffs, is disturbing and — tragic. Isaac Wyler, who was excommunicated from the radical leader’s FLDS back in 2004, fears that the tiny cat that was discovered in concrete at his home serves as a threatening message — one encouraging him to be silent.

See a February 2011 interview during which Wyler talks about his experiences in the church:

By the time the cat was found on Wyler’s property, it was still alive, but was clearly in pain. According to images and video footage of the incident, the animal was buried up to its neck in concrete and placed inside of a construction tube on the Colorado City, Arizona, property.

Andrew Chatwin, a man who also left the church back in 1999, worked feverishly with Wyler to have the cat removed from the concrete. While they took down the pipe and tried to hammer away at the concrete, the end result was what they had hoped to prevent — the cat died a few days after they brought it to a local rescue.

Chatwin claims that the cat’s placement in the tube was intentional and that it is common for these sorts of warnings to be issued to the FLDS. Because Wyler is vocal and speaks out against the church, the animal abuse may be a warning, he believes, that leaders want Wyler to remain quiet.

The former church member also claims that when he brought the incident to a local law enforcement member’s attention, it was brushed off. The Colorado City Sheriff, Chatwin contends, is rumored to also be a member of the FLDS.

“[The officer] kind of chuckled and laughed a little bit and then he said that if it was up to him, he’d just throw dirt on [the cat],” he explained. “And this is coming from a city marshal who’s a member of the FLDS Church.”

With Jeffs behind bars, he clearly wasn’t the individual responsible for physically placing the cat on the property. But there’s evidence that he is, indeed, still controlling the religious sect.

Last month, he purportedly told most of his followers to refrain from having sex and ordered 15 men to be the sole fathers of the rest of the children slated to be born in the future. He made this order, reports say, from prison in Palestine, Texas.

    If I were on a jury deciding this— First we would need to exclude any possibility that this was a freak accident— I know cats and I know concrete and I know well casings (tube,pipe). Consider that the kitten may have been exploring inside the casing while it was lying flat? Then the casing is erected and placed vertically inside the hole? The kitten is frightened and secures himself inside the casing to prevent falling? Then the liquid concrete is poured around the base, filling the hole. The kitten has fallen to the bottom and is unable to climb upward. The liquid part of the concrete mix flows into the bottom 2 feet or so inside the casing. The kitty fights to stay afloat and can keep only his upper neck & head above the liquid level and becomes exhausted and unable to lift his body out of the solidifying concrete and can only scream for help. Fortunately he is heard and freed, but is too injured to survive very long.
    I favor this accidental scenario even though I have absolutely no use nor compassion for the horrible “FLDS” and Warren Jeffs in particular. It defies reason that someone would try to intimidate another by hiding a cat where it could only be found by destroying a well casing (pipe) that had been concreted securely into the ground! I cannot buy that with the evidence contained in the photos shown. Perhaps there is another scenario such as a confession by a madman that would explain the evidence. There is no contradictory evidence in the photos.

    These people were not Mormons, they were not part of the real Morman church just like that idiot was not part of the real Baptis church who would interefere with the funerals of veterans who served this country. There are liars, deceivers in everything any more, sucking off the legitimate things in this life. I am Baptist, as I said, and do not believe in the doctrine of the Morman church, but the people will have to be judged by God, as they live and try to do right. They have got misguided somewhere along the way, but that is for God to deal with. Some of those Mormons (the real ones) live a lot better than most ordinary people of any denomination, so at least with Romney America has a chance to recoup. Romney may make a good President, but know this, he has got to be better than that ignorant Socialist/Marxist/Communist ineligible we have in our White House.

    It baffels me to hear people use Christ and passiveness AKA cowardice to allow evil to persist. I totally believe in Christ and God, but I have never gone to church and undergone the brainwashing of some mortal “priest”. At times like this I say, it’s not about what Christ would do, it’s about what his dad would do, REMEMBER SODOM AND GOMORAH!!!

      These people are cruel and inhumane and my instinct is to wish them evil, even I know I can’t do that. But, I know God won’t let this cruelty go unnoticed.

      I’ve always considered this break-away group to be a bunch of freaks, but this enough to cause me to despise their Un-Godly ways. Sick, sick, sick you people
      Get away as fast as you can from this group of infidels. Their only claim to fame is the leaders seem to like little children (but not in a good way)

      Everyone is so upset about what was done to the cat, which is awful and cruel and should not have been done.

      But what about what they’ve been doing to women and children for years? Slavery and pedophilia, basically. Females who try to escape are captured by the police and sent back, wives are moved from man to man like property, young men are kicked out of the group so that they won’t be competition for the 50 yr old men looking for new pre-teen wives, young men are even raped which is not much publicised, and now the men are being kicked out and are killing themselves. It’s been going on for a long time. This is not new. And the treatment of the unwilling or hopelessly entangled people in the cult is wayyy worse than killing a kitten.

    I don’t like cats but this is beyond repulsive. This is more of a Muslim trick right up there with stoning a woman to death for alleged promiscuous behavior. Within the law and protection of religion in America we must tread lightly. However, the acts such as this will gradually weaken this cult to obscurity.

    To be fair, nobody knows how the cat really got in the pipe for sure. For all they know the cat could have already been in the pipe. The “humane” thing would have been to quickly dispatch the cat. It was extremely naive and stupid to try and “rescue” a cat embedded in concrete.

      @Nasdo: I’m with you. Screw whatever the issue is. To do that to an innocent animal is repulsive. Then people wonder how could others put an animal’s life above a human.

      This cat’s life is clearly worth more than those that did this to it.

      BASHING THEIR HEADS AGAINST THE CONCRETE WOULDN’T BE PUNISHMENT ENOUGH FOR ME.

      I have spent countless hours rescuing cats for TNR. I have spent countless dollars feeding them and sending them to vets. I have spent countless hours praying for those who are sick and dying. This truly breaks my heart into a million pieces.

      Everyone needs to watch the video. A man, kicked out of the clan, is baring his soul about what’s going on in Colorado City. It appears many of the men are being kicked out and the “women & children will be assigned to other men” (husbands)
      Some of the men were so distraught they kill themselves. How would you women like to being “given” to other men? These people are flat out sick and un-Godly.
      Sounds more like a prostitution ring shuffling women off to other men.

      The man being interviewed said he heard Prozac was the most prescribed medication in the town. Little wonder. I‘m truly pizzed and think it’s time someone goes to Colorado City and cleans this town out for good. He also said Warren Jeffs, in a jail in Texas, stays in contact and continues to directs his will on the people.

    This is so sick.
    I am a firm believer in just punishment. If the people that did this to this innocent form of life are ever caught, they should suffer the same fate.

    People that chain or confine animals and let them starve to death or die of thirst should be killed in the same manner.

    People that hurt children, should be hurt in the same way, maybe tied naked over a barrel and a frisky donkey turned loose in their cage.

    Only when the punishment fits the crime will people think twice about hurting the innocent.

    To be human one must have a heart, be able to feel compassion, empathy, love for others, and animals. The people who did this may look human, but they are broken inside. They have become less than human. The first instinct most of us feel when viewing this is to unleash rage, and anger. To extract revenge in our minds. To pen how we would torture them. That would make us no better than them. They deserve punishment.

      Everyone is Colorado City, AZ is FLDS, even the police. I read in a couple books that it isn’t uncommon that they arrest and return those who have escaped back to their abusive husbands/families. It is how they uphold “the law of the land” there.

      There was an expose’ several years ago about people who left that FLDS group in Colorado City, and the law in it’s town gave the film crew & reporters a bad time.
      I can remember being shocked and couldn’t believe these people claim to be church people, but we all know saying you‘re a church doesn’t make you a Christian.

      Please don’t call them religious either. They are on par with some of the worst cults throughout history, who call what they do ‘religious.’ I feel sorry for the innocent children who are taught to believe this is normal. God help the innocent.

    Warren Jeffs is reported to be in prison near Palestine, Texas. Today’s weather forecast for the area is a cool 87 degrees and 97% humidity. After the cool front blows through, the humidity will decrease some and the temperatures will jump back to the upper 90s. There is no air conditioning in Texas prisons for inmates. Just ask any prisoner. Just thought you should know that Warren Jeffs will be kept warm, sweaty, and safe by the State of Texas.

      This is a long ago break-off group from the Mormon church when they outlawed multiple wives. This group is not recognized by the Mormon church.
      The Westboro Baptist church is also a break-off from the Baptist church because they had other odd beliefs.
      Now, can we condemn Baptists? The same with Mormons, we can’t condemn them either. Most churches today broke off from differing opinions in the past.

    I am greatly disturbed that the real church – the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, headquartered in Salt Lake City does not stand up before God and all the world and denounce these excommunicated fundamentalists with all the power and authority they have to do so.
    The world thinks that nut cases like this are the Mormon church and a strong enough distinction is never fully dealt with or settled in the public’s view.
    That greatly concerns me and I would like to know why it is.

      Do you really think that a press conference stating The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not the FLDS church is going to create some lasting and unforgettable impression such that no one will ever be confused again. Come back to reality.

      You already have so many lies and half-truths about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that people think are factual but will be refuted when all truth is known.

      Bury them in concrete, slowly, and have water commense to rise around them, one inch at a time. That was cruelty to aniamils across the board; and if they are willing to do thus, they can all too easily do the same to people.

    This is just plain sick! I hope the authorities are able to track down the responsible parties so there can be justice for this poor animal and we can all see the faces of the people who are responsible. We have a right to know who the living demons are in this world.OMG, how depraved does a person have to be?
