Was 14-Year-Old New Jersey Girl Suspended for Wearing Confederate Flag Shirt to School?

Confederate Flag Shirt | New Jersey Girl Torri Albrecht Suspended | Kreps Middle School in East Windsor

Torri Albrecht‘s mother claims that her daughter’s sweatshirt with the image of the Confederate Flag was the reason why the 14-year-old was suspended from Kreps Middle School in East Windsor, New Jersey. Jane West tells the Times of Trenton that the school has overstepped its boundaries, and violated her “daughter’s right to free speech”:

“Jane West says she’s thinking about withdrawing her daughter, Torri Albrecht, from the school even as district officials insist that the flag — viewed by many as a racially charged symbol — was not the reason the girl was suspended.

‘They’re saying that now because they know they really went too far this time,’ West said. ‘If there wasn’t a problem with the sweatshirt, why did the vice principal call at 10 after 8 on Monday to demand that I bring a change of clothes for my daughter?’

‘He told me he had a bunch of students and a bunch of teachers come into his office to say they were disturbed by it,’ she said.”

The family, originally from Virginia, told News 12 New Jersey that they consider the flag to be part of their heritage. West went on to equate her daughter wearing the flag to “Indian kids” wearing “turbans,“ or Jewish kids wearing ”their yarmulkes.”

West told the Times that before heading to school on the day of the suspension she called her daughter’s cell phone to tell her not to follow any orders to turn the sweatshirt inside out. When she got to the school she was told that her daughter had been given a one-day suspension.

According to CBS News New York, school officials said that no student was suspended for wearing an inappropriate shirt, but would not clarify on why Albrecht was disciplined due to student confidentiality policies. District Superintended Edward Forsthoffer told the Times that the district has a dress code which bans any clothing that causes a substantial disturbance in school.

West denounces allegations that the Confederate Flag represents racism more so than heritage. “My older daughter is biracial. For Torri this was about expressing herself. It was about saying ‘I’m from the South and I’m proud of it.’ She didn’t do it to cause hurt feelings,” West told the Times.

The superintendent insists that despite West’s claims, no ban was issued on the shirt.

West said she plans to eventually send her to daughter to Virginia to live with her sister. In the meantime, West told the Times that she is considering home-schooling prior to moving the girl back south.

Sorry, they should have explained that is not the confederate flag, nor was that design ever a national flag of the confederacy. that is the confederate battle flag flown by troops and veterans (after reconstruction) to celebrate confederate hero day (now memorial day) to give thanks to the people who fought and died for the south during the civil war, who were black, white, native, jew, catholic, free or not.

Now it is a cultural symbol, of either heritage, stubborn independence, or misused by bigots.

This is a terrific example of why compulsory education mandated and funded by the Government needs to be eliminated. Private schools can mandate uniforms, people can chose to pay to attend or not, and no one needs to have their money confiscated to pay property taxes for school systems in which refusal to pay means confiscation of your home. Poor people who wish to attend schools, attend the private schools who will be required to have so many slots gratis or pro bono similar requirements for attorneys to do pro-bono work.
At least this way, taxpayers can control where, who, and curriculum which is fed to their kids and not be subject to indoctrination which is the new norm for public schools.

The first known observance of a Memorial Day-type observance was in Charleston, South Carolina on May 1, 1865; freedmen (freed slaves) commemorated 257 Union soldiers had been buried at Hampton Park, and the freedmen labeled the gravesite “Martyrs of the Race Course”. It had nothing to do with the traitors and racist Southerns.

The Confederate Flag needs is not sign of a failed culture built on the enslavement of others. The South was not a melting pot of freedom, it was a backward society that had to be forced out of the dark ages. In many regards it is still a backward place were religion has replaced science and logic and where old bigotries hide beneath smiles.

If the school said it wasn’t about her hoodie then I suggest she go back with it on and if they suspend her again then we have our answer.

I remember kids in high school wearing shirts with confederate flags on them a lot. Of course I went to school in Tennessee :P But I never recalled it being a problem.

Better yet let the girl wear huntin’ camo to school and see if they ban that…

Stupidity. I believe the school is wrong—but at the same time, I seem to detect mom making a political statement through her daughter. She called her while she was heading to school and told her not to obey orders to turn the shirt inside out? So she knew it would be a problem. Again, don’t agree with the school at all, but agree with the mom even less because she apparently knew it would be an issue and she chose to use her daughter to make the statement.

I’m a Black man who grew up in the South. I currently live in Ohio and I fly 4 banners in my front yard. Old Glory raised above the banner of the State of Ohio, followed by the The Confederate banner, and finally the Ohio State Buckeye banner.

The Confederate flag raises a lot of emotions in people. There are also a lot of versions of origins. I think I’ll stick with the idea that it was a borrowed idealism of the Scottish cross banner of St Andrew, without the Red Cross of St. Patrick, and was a symbol of the fight for independence and freedom. That Southern Plantation owners claimed it as their symbol without knowledge in that they were opposing the American Union, and had adapted the flag to their ideals of monarchy, and with Great Britain.

The Scots were considered rebels and treasonous to the Brits in their fight for freedom in the same way the 13 colonies revolted against GB were. The adoption by the KKK of the banner is a perversion of the ideals of the Cross of St Andrews, but the original ideals were anything but a symbol of slavery and racial divide. It was a symbol of Freedom.

It’s know has the Rebel Flag not the Confederate Flag to most who fly. It is a symbol of defiance,a symbol of independence, and a symbol of southern pride. Yankees and liberals see it as the flag that represented slavery……Wrong Lincoln told the soutrhern states that had slaves that they could continue the practice before the Civil War broke out. So why did the Democrats of the south go to war, because the war was fought on taxation, regulation, and discrimination. The Union was taxing the south and using the money to build the North. There wasn’t an equal division of tax allocation.
Taxation without representation……sound fimilar? Think about the billions and billion going out of our country to prop up foriegn nations why Americans are homeless.,Think about the wars being fought at the behest of the U.N. ……..The old timers say the south will rise again It will but it won’t just be the south it will be people across this nation.

By no means should the girl have been suspended for wearing that sweatshirt. However, it seems like the mother was deliberately trying to start something: “West told the Times that before heading to school on the day of the suspension she called her daughter’s cell phone to tell her not to follow any orders to turn the sweatshirt inside out.”

Makes me think that the daughter had been in trouble before some some issue and had been warned, and the mother decided to push the issue anyway.

I’m also curious why the fact that her daughter is biracial is brought up. Is she saying she’s half-black? Again, it seems she’s making excuses because she knew her daughter would be getting in trouble. Parents need to stop using their kids to start fights, IMO.

actually, it was flown on the second and third national confederate flags in the upper corner where stars and blue field are found on U.S. Flag. A total of 4 national confederate flags were flown. The “Southern Cross” or “St. Andrews Cross” is what most people think was the confederate flag. In reality it was the Battle flag of the army of Northern Virginia and was also the Confederate Naval Jack……was also used by Russia at one point and variations of it have been used for centuries. It is a symbol of southern pride, symbol of rebellion and symbol of the confederacy. Much loved by southerners, myself included, it has nothing to do with slavery and bigotry but rather the simple idea that the United States government had no right to tell the states what to do and that leaving the union was something the founders actually put into the constitution as the ultimate check on federal power. The United States actually invaded a soveriegn nation in attacking the confederate states. Rebellion against tyranny is what the battle flag represents, not hate and racism as the left so loves to argue.

Some lady drove by as he had it flying on his house and asked where she could get one of those “Betsy Ross” flags. Some schools have banned the bible. Many groups are trying to remove public crosses.

This is the heart of why the founding fathers said people have the right to choose to believe what they want and that right should not be taken away. Not a separation defined by government, but that government could not choose for you.
Progressives have changed that to the government has the right to choose what you can and cannot believe and how it should be perceived. When your right are not God given and become government given, you have progressive change, socialism, the direction our society is moving in now.

Unfortunately, the schools and society in general teach that all things Southern are to be shunned as evil..including the real history of the War of Northern Aggression as it is taught from the northern perspective.
Perhaps Torri SHOULD go back South where there’s still a small amount of sanity and pride in this country still alive!

She should come to school wearing a hijab, and the rebel flag sweat shirt together, then what will they do! This is BS when i went to school 25 years ago you should have seen the stuff some kids wore to school, boys wore t-shirts with gory skulls, and 1/2 naked girls, and cars and rebel flags, and girls wore short skirts, and see threw blouses, and high heels, and tight jeans, and some got sent home when they went too far, but most did not.

(and that’s if they went home) and boys were wearing Band T shirts that were in question. Its bad enough boys and girls now are STILL wearing there jeans half way down their butts. It looked bad 20+ yrs ago, an looks worse now. TO the kids that wear the jeans half way down the ass….START WEARING A BELT!!!!!!! they have been around along time.

How about we just put an end to this bullcrap and require uniforms in public schools?
They are going to government schools, make it clear to them they are subjects of the government.

Yup, I agree. Since we are forced under law to send our kids to Publik Ejumakashun whether we like it or not (hell, we’re paying for it whether we like it or not!) we might as well put them in uniforms. The appropriate color would be brown shirts.

Why don’t we just clear up these public school issues by empowering parents to choose a different school if they are encountering problems such as these in their current school. Oh and if a parent chooses to remove their kid from a school, they should also be able to remove their financial support from a school that they are nit using! It all boils down to freedom, equality, and most of all choices!

      In Japan students wear uniforms.
In Japan the money follows the student, the money does not go to a school simply because you’re in its vicinity.
In Japan they score higher PISA scores than the US.

      Obviously we’re doing something wrong…

Let the girl wear what she wants, but Mommy shouldn’t go crying to the principal when her sweet little girl gets her bottom kicked. It’s a bad taste in clothing, but the girl should have the chance to learn from her own mistakes. (But her mommy sure is stupid for encouraging this.)

Sorry Mom, but you got to understand this is a heritege, and she was raised in the south where the flag flies at courthouses. It has nothing to do with race, and her constitutional right has been violated. Did you ever wear a flag pin or shirt with U.S. flag shown on it somewhere, it means the same thing to her and many other people in the south.

So when one of your little darlin‘s wears something that a bigot doesn’t like, it’s ok to kick their little butts too? Maybe your kids should have their heads kicked in for not being progressive enough???

See how stupid your attitude sounds? And would you like to have one of your kids beaten or sent home from school for simply wearing the wrong FLAG (u.s. instead of mexican)????? Pull you head out!!!

Whoa, calm down! I think my comments were misunderstood. I don’t have a problem with her shirt. I love free speech and don’t want her choice taken away. I don’t know what her NJ school is like, but as a teenager, I was bullied just for being a “little white girl”. At a school where whites were the minority, many white girls were harassed and beat up. There are people out there just looking for a fight. This flag could be just the excuse they need to make her their next target. As some of you mentioned, the flag has strong meaning to some people. The way this young lady feels about it is probably different than the feelings it will invoke in her classmates. Of coarse I don’t want her to get her butt kicked, nor does she desrve it. Im just saying, when it happens, the mom shouldn’t be surprised and go running to the principal. He was trying to defuse the situation before it became a problem; he probably has an idea of how his other students will react to it. This girl should have the right to decide whether or not she wants to take the risk. As a mom who would not want any of my daughters to take a chance at getting hurt, I would discourage her from wearing it. It’s not right to have to worry about being targetted, but it’s reality and the mother should warn her daughter of the danger. To the comment about the flag still being used at certain buildings, I think it‘s historicaly appropriate and it reminds us of our nation’s herritage; I never said anything against it.

      First, great point, Manalishi.

Second, may I just say that The South Will Rise Again… as they say.

I would love nothing more than the God fearing people of the formerly glorious South to throw off our shackles and atheist/socialist overlords in Washington. Dixieland was and will remain God’s land and the more they try to stop that, the more likely that we will secede with honor once again!

If the shirt wasn’t the problem then I guess when she comes back from suspension she will be allowed to wear it, right? what will be their excuse then fort suspending her? PC controls the masses, as long as they do what they are told. I bet if she wore a head dress in honor of Islam, they wouldn’t dare suspend her.

I wouldn’t wear it, but I support her right to, just as I support a person I saw with a sweatshirt that said Black Power. It is your 1st amendment right. Schools have gone too far in trying to control people. But then must school are nothing more then socialist reeducation centers.

Should children have the right to bare arms in schools? Do you support their 2nd amendment right?

Children don’t observe all the same rights as an adult, certainly if this was the case then a parent could not prohibit the speech of their child in a public square.

So we recognize that children have an extension of rights from their advocate. When that responsibility is passed onto the educator then a different set of rules applies. Read John Locke’s social contract theory, public school is merely a social contract where a governing board makes rules for its users. (However, In some states public school has become a forced contract)

I agree with you entirely Cat about uniforms, simple and less distractions. Or even better yet, abolish all publis schools, then parnets can choose if they like the chosen school policies or not, and if so leave. Christian schools, atheist schools, muslim schools, gay schools whatever…

Vouchers for all … then let the parents pick the school. That would put most public schools right out of business. ;-)

I sent my son to a Catholic High School (even though we are not Catholic) .. best decision I ever made .. and yes he had to wear a shirt, tie, and “dress” pants.
