Was a High School Cheer Coach Fired Because She Works at Hooters?

Nicole Zivich, 24, used to be the cheerleading coach at Estero High School near Ft. Myers, Florida. Not anymore. In November, she was terminated. And according to emails the ex-coach dug up through open records laws, she said it had to do with complaints from a parent that included comments about her second job: being a waitress at Hooters.

“Who writes 232 emails about one person in three months?,” said Zivich, who uncovered the messages sent from the parent to school officials. “That’s more than an email a day…It’s obviously what I would call a personal vendetta against me.”

Fox4 in Florida explains the nature of the emails:

Personal comments all from one cheerleader’s mom who refers to Zivich as an “inexperienced 24 year old Hooters waitress” with “no professional credentials,“ lacking ”maturity and judgment” to be a cheerleading coach. She also added in another email that her daughter “won’t be waiting tables” like her coach.

They also reveal a curious chain of events:

At first, Estero Principal George Glover defended Zivich. In an email he said: “Nicole will never ask our girls to do anything that has not been approved in the area of safety” and added he was “thrilled” to have her.

But as the parent took her concerns higher up the chain Superintendent Joseph Burke stepped in saying in September: ”Mr. Clover has been advised to look for replacements.”

“Why wasn’t I brought down and asked, ‘Hey what’s going on?,’” said Zivich.

“They never asked for your side of the story?,” asked Fox 4 reporter Matt Grant.

“Never,” she said.

So far, Zivich hasn’t gotten many answers. At a recent school board meeting, she and her squad — which went on strike, so to speak — were promised them, but in a subsequent meeting were told that the district will not comment on personnel matters:

The parent behind the e-mails spoke out to Fox4 and said her concerns were not all about Hooters, but rather about the stunts the girls were performing — and a bikini car wash the girls staged in the past:

As for the school board, it contends the Hooters job was not a factor in the firing. But Zivich says she still doesn’t know why she was fired.

UPDATE:

Fox4 in Florida did a recent follow-up report that shows the superintendent, Joseph Burke, may not be being completely honest in the incident. He has claimed that the decision to fire Zivich was all principal George Clover’s ideas. But Zivich has said she and Clover had a great relationship and that didn’t make much sense. And now, emails show that Burke may have been behind the firing:

“It was his decision,” said Burke. “For us to pretend that this was something that the board or the superintendent directed, or that we made the decision to take action in this case, is just not accurate.”

But public records obtained by Zivich seem to show that’s exactly what happened.

In email after email Estero principal George Clover defends Zivich – telling a parent who sent multiple emails critical of Zivich that he thought she was “excellent in this role,“ that her ”credentials for being a cheering coach are very solid“ and that he was ”thrilled” she was coaching.

While Burke says the firing was the principal’s doing, his own words seem to suggest something else.

In emails, Burke says Clover “cannot continue to condone the behavior” described by that complaining parent. And a month before Zivich was fired, he told school board member Jeanne Dozier: ”Mr. Clover has been advised to look for replacements.”

So, if Clover had been “advised” to look for replacements, was the decision to fire Zivich really his own?

********* about the board most likely being conservative republicans, conservatives might not want her having to work at hooters, but sure wouldn’t want her fired from her job helping kids forcing her to rely more on the possibly degrading job at hooters. Conservatives would see if giving her a raise, or even giving some of their own money would allow her to quit her hooters job and concentrate on her career as a dance instructor.

The state of Florida is letting too many nut-jobs into decision-making positions in their school system. Pretty soon they will be vyiing with California for the “Supreme Stupidity in Schools” award. If you are going to place men in these positions of responsibility, please choose those who’ve not been castrated. A real man would have told this mom to grow up or seek professional help. She obviously has some deeply seated sex problems if a nice, intelligent, waitress can make her feel so creepy-crawly about her own sex.

@Eliasim, Obviously you missed the part of the story about her job as a cheer coach being a part-time low paying gig that only netted 1300 in 6 months of work. Would you quit a job at hooters earning 30+ an hour for a $1300/ 6 month job? Simple math should tell you which job would be better. The mom is just upset that she is an old bag and that her daughter got her wittle (sic) head bumped. People like you should learn to read or even watch the news before commenting.

@eliasim Who are you to judge this woman’s work? In tough economical times, you find work wherever you can get it. If she is having trouble making rent in her less than lucrative public school salary, Then she should be able to work other jobs. Should she quit her job at Hooters, fall behind her financial obligations, just so you can have your own opinions satisfied. Not everyone has the luxury of a job that pays for everything. In case you don’t know, coaches for high schools don’t get paid much at all, its more of an additional bonus to teaching. Just because she has to work another job, and Hooters is where she found it, gives one no excuse to bash her. Do you think that’s her dream job? I highly doubt it. As the old saying goes, don‘t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in her shoes. You don’t know her situation, and to criticize her choices is sad.

Not enough to justify her time coaching) and is being slapped because some closed minded, prune brained, politically correct B—CH is concerned about the influence this young woman is having on the teenaged girls she coaches????
Perhaps these teenaged kids should be more aware of how a closed minded busy-body can be so destructive of a well meaning person’s life?

I don’t know, my daughter is too good for Hooters. That being said, she’s not too good for eating food out of dumpsters, cleaning toilets, or picking up cans along the side of the road.

The 235 emails were probably excessive… probably the best recourse would be to take her daughter off the cheer team rather than to try to enforce her standard of morality on someone else. While I might think that trash picking and dumpster diving is preferable to Hooters, that doesn’t mean that I need to force others to comply with my standards.

I think everyone is seeing the wrong angle to the story here. If you read the parents complaint, it states that her is is the stunts being pulled using the girl. One indicated stunt is a bikini car wash the girls staged. 14-17 year old girls having a BIKINI car wash? I guess I am the only person who finds this disturbing. What is they were thong bikinis that were low riding on the thighs?

The parents concerns are valid. The Coach may be too immature and looking to be one of the girls as opposed to being a role model to support these young women in making meaningful decisions that could impact their lives. Flaunting sexuality for a school funding event is way out of bounds, and most likely what led to her dismal as a coach. Her working for Hooters is a valid point (not that it is not hard and meaningful work, but it is based on treating women as objects and selling their sexuality). Maybe it is the only line of work she could fine that could support her two kids, but when you pull antics that sexualize young women that are not adults you are raising flags as to whether there is other reasons behind her personal decisions in life and in the school atmosphere. She may not like it, but she needs to learn that her actions carry serious impact on the children that look up to her.

I don’t want my stepdaughter to work at Hooters… but that doesn‘t mean I’d demean and bully her not to. I love her and, in my eyes, she will always be little girl that needs to be protected from the world. There’s a stubborn, little man lurking inside of me that doesn’t want to see her grow up and become a woman. That‘s my knee jerk bias that is pointed out to me more often than I’d like. Is she too good for certain jobs? Man, I can’t get the kid to clean the litter box, but she does help with our dogs and tend to her horse. I’d like to think her mother and I both set a good example that you are never too good to get your hands dirty. Hooters ain’t a whore house. It’s a stupid T-shirt, beer and wings. Oh, the horror.
Busybodies tend to also be bullies. JohnnyMidknight makes a good point. Is there a line that shouldn’t be crossed. Sure, but the cheerleader car wash seems to be pretty common… doesn‘t mean I’m 100% behind it.
Did this cheer coach put the kids in danger? I’d have to say, “No.” The mother’s lesson is ugly and indicates that it is her opinion and status that matters over all concerns. Classic busybody, classic bully. I pray to God I’m never this much of a pompous, egocentric choad when it comes to my kids.

Also, to fire her from a “government” job without a reason is against the law. Where is her union rep? I know plenty of school teachers who should be fired because of their lack of ability or KNOWLEDGE. Sounds like the school supervision personnel need some knowledge. They should be terminated for lack of following effective supervision rules. They must all have reached the peter principal.

If the cheer coach was just a coach and not a teacher, she probably was not in the union. I don’t think non-teachers have to join, or in some cases are even allowed to join, government unions. I don’t think this woman was fired fairly, but I don’t have all the facts either. Granted, they should have given her a reason for her termination, but if she signed an at-will employment agreement, they CAN fire her without cause, anytime they want, or she could quit anytime she wanted, without cause or explanation.

      JohnHW,

Why do they call it Hooters? It’s a euphemism for t*ts, generally big ones. I put in the ” * ” because I think that theblaze might otherwise block my comment. Why would they do that John if this were not an issue?

I give no thought as to whether you go to Hooters or strip clubs as an adult, but this person is purportedly leading teenagers at a public school and leaders do so by example, and are therefore held accountable for their actions. Schools should have the right to weed out employees for poor performance — and bad judgment. That ability should be as localized as possible, so that if you really feel strongly enough about it, you can help vote in a Hooters friendly school board.

So what? They’re not pole dancing in the nude, and I’ve yet to see any customer get a lap dance. Their wings are pretty good, the beer’s cold, and it’s a fun place to kick back and watch a game with the guys. In this economy if a girl can hold down two jobs to make ends meet, more power to her.

Hooters is a legitimate restaurant chain which employs female waitresses wearing clothing that are no more revealing than what most attractive women wear in public on a daily basis. Does this school district have a standard of conduct for it personel? If not, why not? This lady should have considered how her long term influence would set on those children that she coaches. Why shouldn‘t a parent be concerned about the conduct of their child’s teacher? I have been.

Oh, I agree that this coach can work anywhere she wants, that is not the point. The point is that she DOES have an obligation to do more than just coach, but also to give her team a good example inorder to influence them to follow moral and ethical guidlines. Yes, there is a morality (personal conduct) question here. I have no doubt that Hooter’s food is good. I also know that sex sells at Hooter’s. That is the problem. I support the concern of this mother. Being a good coach also requires a standard of personal conduct and personal choices that must be taken into consideration. DON’T WE ALL WANT TO SEE THIS IN POLITICIANS, AND WE DON’T SEE THIS IN MOST OF THEM? Influence is a major part of being a coach. This is just as valid as expecting politicians to be honest, forthright and moral.

    That’s my take.

So what if she worked at Hooters? Number one, its not the waitresses at Hooters that give it its negative rep, its the creepers that go in there making sexual jokes and drooling over themselves. Every Hooters I’ve been to (yes I’m a 25 year old red blooded male) the waitresses have been very sweet but it’s not like they stand on tables and having wet t-shirt contests? Give this girl a break, she’s working two jobs. Number two, like many have pointed out, if you go to any beach, gym facility, college bar/night club, you will see girls with a lot less clothes than a Hooters waitress. Grow up.

The story doesn’t mention that the mother did not want the coach fired, it actually says that the mother‘s concerns were not completely about the Hooter’s job. It was about the stunts and the inexperience of the coach. No matter how nice looking this coach was, if she was inexperienced and doing dangerous stunts with high schoolers, perhaps it is a good idea to challenge her position.

Anyone remember that old television commercial that went, “Please don‘t hate me because I’m beautiful.” Seems obvious what’s going on here. Sounds like more school system totalitarianism, to me . . . “We’ll crush you because we can.” Hooters corporate should get behind this and file a suit on behalf of all all their hard working employees who are simply trying to make a living. Shame on that intolerant, disingenuous, mean spirited mother whose daughter wears little more than the waitress, when she is cheering on Friday nights. I promise that one day the daughter will ask the mother, “What’s wrong with you?”

Our lives as they are lived influence those around us, especially children, teens and young adults. Adults, especially “teachers” are held to a higher standard. We are counseled in the Bible not to become teachers for if we are, more is expected of us than of others because of that level of influence.

It is more than obvious that far too many “teachers” in schools/colleges/universities today are on the wrong path and are teaching our children to follow those errant ways.

As a professional teacher, I agree that the high school “cheer coach” (whatever that is) should resign her second job or her teaching job. Any woman working at hooters or like business has no business teaching children. IMHO.

You are correct, Grandma, the teachers need to focus on having sex with their students and supplying them with drugs and booze, so they can grow up to be losers, aka Democrats. How can anyone who is trying to hold down two jobs to make ends meet ever be an example for the spoiled rotten children in High School?
They need to be attending OWS or wherever rallies and demanding that their rich parents give them more and more.
