Was a U.S. Medal of Honor Recipient Smeared for Trying to Protect U.S. Troops?

Dakota Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor fighting to save his Marine brothers in Afghanistan, but as a civilian, he purportedly encountered a different sort of treatment. When he raised objections over the sale of advanced military technology to Pakistan, a defense contractor allegedly smeared the decorated hero – and even belittled the Medal of Honor itself.

Was A U.S. Medal Of Honor Recipient Smeared For Trying To Protect U.S. Troops?

After serving his country with the highest distinction, Meyer has been humiliated and effectively ousted from the private defense contracting industry for voicing concerns over what he thought could be a threat to U.S. troops in theater.

His former employer — British defense giant BAE — has claimed Meyer was mentally unstable and had a problem with alcohol. This prevented him from transferring to another contractor — one that trains U.S. military to spot roadside bombs.

The accusations could also put Meyer’s ability to receive a security clearance in jeopardy, which would be a major impediment to working in the defense industry following his years of service as a Marine. Fox News has more:

Considering these issues, it should be no surprise that the former Marine is fighting back. Meyer has filed a lawsuit stating that he was maligned and suffered employer retaliation because of his objection to military sales that he felt could put U.S. troops in danger.

Specifically, Meyer says he didn’t believe BAE should sell advanced thermal optic sniper scopes to the Pakistani military.  In an email to his supervisor, he claims to have written: “We are taking the best gear, the best technology on the market to date and giving it to guys known to stab us in the back. These are the same people killing our guys.”

Given the recent skirmish along the U.S. border that ended when NATO forces killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in response to an ambush, the concerns Meyer has raised over Pakistani intentions appear very plausible.

So did BAE sell the scopes in question to the Pakistanis, and if so, who approved the sale?

Julian Barnes at the Wall Street Journal is following the Sgt. Meyer case closely, and wrote earlier this week that:

“It wasn’t clear Monday whether the U.S. ever provided high-tech thermal scopes to Pakistan. Mr. Roehrkasse, the BAE spokesman, said the decision to sell defense equipment is made by the State Department, not BAE. “In recent years, the U.S. government has approved the export of defense related goods from numerous defense companies, including BAE systems, to Pakistan as part of the United States’ bilateral relationship with that country…”

For its part, BAE has said it will defend itself in court against Meyer’s retaliation claims, but stops well short of denigrating a Medal of Honor recipient in public. “Although we strongly disagree with his claims, which we will address through the appropriate legal process, we wish him success and good fortune in his endeavors,” said Brian J. Roehrkasse, a BAE spokesman.

Meanwhile, Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Meyer has been on a goodwill tour visiting military bases — and he even rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

But it appears he will not rest until anyone responsible for tarnishing his exceptional record is held to account.

God Bless this young man and may he win his case. Thank you for your service Dakota. It wouldn’t surprise me if Holder had something to do with it. I received a fwd about the Justice Dept. new website. Seems the red, white and blue is gone replaced with stark black and white with a quote across the very top that says “The common law is the will of mankind, issuing from the life of the people”. The quote is from the 1930′s from C Wilfred Jenks who was a proponet of International law for a global workforce. Call it what you may but it is not Capitalism. http://www.justice.gov/

Isn’t it a wonderful display of government that we fire generals that state the obvious concerning our “allies” v. our “enemies” and we are now promoting our defense contractors to do business with those “enemies”…. So along comes Sgt Meyer who throws the B.S. flag, which needed to be thrown because we have no business granting such a contract to an obvious enemy of the state, and he is slandered. It almost resembles the F&F whistle blowers. You know, the guys that have been punished for exposing the AG for the murderer & corrupt thug that he is..

After he got it a defense company hires him thinking it’s good publicity, figure just pay him well and stick him somewhere he will be happy and keep his mouth shut. WRONG!!!! What this man did in person saved many lives and brought back the bodies of those that we lost all the while risking his own life. You think a few hundred k a year is worth more then his life, that he wouldn’t risk that to save more of his brothers. I still don‘t think that people understand that ’commerce’ is what the government is all about. That is a self corrupting duplicitous position to be in. Yet, that’s where we are. Now, government will voice lofty rhetoric about its high minded self-righteousness to your face, but behind the scenes we can see the real truth.

Back after Clinton bombed the Chinese embassy in Serbia accidentally he ‘apologized’ by giving them restricted technology, secretly. Later it was revealed, but the press so loves the idea of a ‘new’ world order it didn’t report much on it. Today, the socialists have a nearly open door for China to all of our tech. And our tech ‘imports’ into the defenses industry have shown that China is encrypting and embedding our electronics with unknown and not understood functions, software and other switches.

And nothing is being said. We still keep buying. And our military still keeps using the garbage we pay for from China. This guy is in WAY over his head. And they will not think twice about destroying him. No mater what his record may show him to be.

Meyer should be listened to. Pakistan is not our friend. Pakistan is an antagonist both to India and the west. It’s rogue scientists have in the past attempted to get nukes to our enemies. Pakistan would hardly be worth anything to us but not for it’s nukes and the potential for them to fall into Islamist hands. While their neighbour India grows it’s middle class and begins to join the industrialized world, Pakistan clings to it’s ungovernable nature and is rife with Islamists.

How about some honesty here. I know that doesn’t go to far on this site, but you are all acting like this administration is out to destroy its own soldiers and is involved with nefarious weapons deals. The fact is that this administration IS selling weapons to our enemies (past and future), but it is also a fact that EVERY other administration for as long as I can remember has sold weapons to our enemies. Reagan sold to Iran AND afghanistan. We are fighting our own weapons in the middle east and the rest of the world because we have a long history of selling weapons to whoever asks. As for fast and furious, that was started by the BUSH administration. Fast and furious as well as weapon sales all over the world are morally wrong and have cost this county thousands of lives. I don’t disagree with your outrage, but it is just directed in just one of the places it should be directed. There is nothing new about selling weapons to our enemies, just don’t pretend Obama is the first to do it. As much as you like to demonize Obama, he is only carrying on a long tradition of Democrats AND Republicans in the white house who are more beholden to weapons manufacturers than they are to their own military

Every body here likes to blame Obama for everything and he deserves blame for some of his programs but where were you when Bush I, Bush II or Reagan were selling weapons to Iran and Afghanistan. Where were you when Bush got us into a war without paying for it, Where were you when Reagan violated the constitution by selling arms to Iran? Yes, Clinton did it too. Dogdr, you’re initial comments missed the point that Totally Domestic was making. It is not just the Obama Administration has solely engaged in corrupt activity such as this. What concerns me about this group more than several of the others is the blatant nature of how it is being done. It is one thing to sell weapons quietly to a possibly hostile regime that could end up in the hands of someone who doesn’t like us. The fact that it is still being allowed to a country that we are very close to open conflict with should be a concern. Either it is a colossal failure on the part of the State Department to say “gee since a lot of Pakistan’s special forces are suspected of helping out the Taliban, maybe we should forbid sale” or there is a possibility that something more insidious is in play. Personally I prefer to believe they are just incompetent.

If a progressive such as yourself is as patriotic as you claim to be, then may I give you a recommendation. Rather than argue the semantics of whose fault it is and why your guys in office aren’t to blame; agree that government needs to get its act together and stop garbage like this from continuing. Also, avoid the trite tactics of blaming “heartless republicans” and the “Evil President Bush” while heaping praise on President Obama. It makes you sound like Bob Beckell, and all that does is make people here tune you out like a bad record.

Our government has always sold weapons to other countries. Usually in the open, but sometimes not. There is NOTHING new to what was happening. You really weren’t concerned about Reagan breaking the law and violating the constitution to secretly sell arms to a country that was holding our hostages? You missed the overall message because you are so concerned with me “putting words in your mouth.” Grow up, I’ve been a Mormon my whole life and people go out of their way to tell me exactly what my religion believes.
But if that is the game you want to play, I’ll play. One, you assume that I do not care about republican corruption simply because I point it out in the Obama administration. While you are correct that I didn’t care about the Reagan Contra incident, that has more to with me being a toddler at the time. I don’t tolerate corruption in any form from any group, especially when it gets our people killed. Actually, no. We believe that biological and social evolution are continuing processes. That just as we have progressed from loyalty to the individual through loyalty to the family unit to tribalism to nationalism, there is a next logical step in which the interests of the species as a whole supersede those of the individual nation-state. Not that this has anything much to do with whether we should or shouldn’t sell sniper rifles to Pakistan, but as a matter of philosophy, that is what progressives actually believe.

      Progressives,

It’s the individual that must be respected, not eliminating the individual! Get away from that and eventually you end up slaughtering the masses for the common good. If that individual is ‘you’, you wouldn‘t be so apt to call your ideas ’progressive’. All this sophisticated and “I’m cool”, praising Mao, Che, Castro??!, Oh, Great People indeed. Do you trust them with your families? How about if your family comes up with a different idea antagonistic to these heros that are so hailed?! Individual rights that can’t be taken away is Progress, We Had that! “Shallow opinions?“ ”Beckerheads?” This is part of the indifferent aloofness that accompanies most of the intellectual progressive mindset. Not all. Certainly, Most. The smugness is sickening. It’s been said to the effect, “I’d prefer a jury of twelve honest farmers with common sense to judge me, before twelve intellectuals, anyday.” And I agree. I’m too sick, old, and tired to be arguing with sophmores. Do your worst, kids. We’re all answerable. Go Mock. That’s seems to be the Sal Alinsky way.

Dakota Meyer, you are a hero, son. More of us are behind you than not. This is just another battle. Another injustice to overcome. Yeah, it’s not the first time this type of stuff is done, but you brought it to light. You did the right thing. You were there!

After what he’s endured, I don’t think some crooked greedy defense contractor will tarnish his reputation. All these military contractors are corrupt from top to bottom, it’s all crony capitalism and must be eliminated if we ever expect to have a free nation again. The military is a government job, and should be handled by the government, blurring the lines between government and private doesn’t noting but promote corruption and incompetence.

When posting my own comment I struggled with what to call Sgt. Meyer. Medal of Honor winner did not sound right to me but awardee or honoree didn’t sound appropiate either.

How should I have phrased it? Recipient,? I’m not being a twit, I would really like to know.

Viva Dakota! And long live the Truth! May God expose liars of every sort. It’s easy to see which side is speaking from a heart loving justice and righteousness.
We have a long line of CICs lacking the wisdom to do the job. Roosevelt arming Stalin. So many millions murdered worldwide using American-provided weapons. But, as always, we elect – and re-elect – these at-least-misguided people, so the sin is (pardon the term) collectively ours. It‘s stupid folks who don’t learn from their mistakes. Let’s pry ourselves out of our rut, there’s a life to live.

“Specifically, Meyer says he didn’t believe BAE should sell advanced thermal optic sniper scopes to the Pakistani military.”

DUH!?!? How many minutes will it take for the Iranians to get their greasy paws on this stuff. As a U.S> citizen you cannot buy this stuff in the US, it is for sale to Military and Law Enforcement only because they are afraid someone will sell it to an enemy foreign government. So the enemy Obama Administration is not only running guns to the Mexican drug cartels but now advanced thermal technology to the jihadists? Just who is the enemy here? Pakistan, the drug cartels, the US government? How about ALL of the above.

This kid is absolutely right and has continued his tradition of courage in face of the enemy. He should get a second CMH for this and the US government should be immediately overthrown.

BAE may be headquartered in Britain but they are a major player in the defense industry in the U.S. Not to mention that British troops are also in harm’s way in Afghanistan as part of the NATO forces. When my wife and I were in England we visited one of the Highland regiments’ HQ and they were scrambling to find enough able-bodied troops to form a burial detail for two of their comrades who were killed in Afghanistan and whose bodies had been shipped home for burial. All the rest of the Regiment were deployed to the combat zone. BAE’s selling 3rd generation night optics to the Pakis is reprehensible, as is State’s approval of the sale. And smearing one of our few living MOH winners is despicable.
