Was Michele Bachmann Unfairly Maligned Over Her ‘Founding Fathers’ Comments?

Was Michele Bachmann Unfairly Maligned Over Her Founding Fathers Comments?Rep. Michele Bachmann’s “Founding Fathers dilemma” started back in January when she claimed that the nation’s first leaders had “worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.” In response, ABC News wrote the following:

Many of the founders, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, were, in fact, slave owners. And as every middle school history teacher will tell you, the founding fathers virtually ignored the issue of slavery. It was not until the mid 1800s that slavery became a contentious issue in American politics.

Interestingly, numerous sources cite some of the Founders, indeed, speaking out against slavery (as every middle school history teacher should be able to tell you). In a letter written to Robert Evans on June 8, 1819, John Adams wrote, ”Every measure of prudence, therefore, ought to be assumed for the eventual total extirpation of slavery from the United States … I have, throughout my whole life, held the practice of slavery in … abhorrence.”

Even George Washington, the nation’s first president, stood firmly planted against the institution of slavery. PBS has more:

In 1786, Washington wrote to two Americans expressing his desire to see the lawful end to slavery. In a letter to Robert Morris he wrote, “I hope it will not be conceived from these observations, that it is my wish to hold the unhappy people, who are the subject of this letter, in slavery. I can only say that there is not a man living who wishes more sincerely than I do, to see a plan adopted for the abolition of it; but there is only one proper and effectual mode by which it can be accomplished, and that is by Legislative authority…”

To John Francis Mercer he wrote that it was among his “…first wishes to see some plan adopted, by the legislature by which slavery in this country may be abolished by slow, sure, and imperceptible degrees.”

And these are only two examples. James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and others also made their views clear on the issue. So with this in mind, one wonders: Was Bachmann absolutely incorrect in her assertions? Many liberals would say “yes,” but reality paints a much more complicated picture. Yesterday, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos took the presidential candidate to task over her statement about the Founding Fathers. He said:

“…earlier this year you said that the Founding Fathers who wrote the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence worked tirelessly to end slavery. Now with respect Congresswoman, that’s just not true.”

Bachmann’s response is intriguing. She stands by her previous statement and claims that Founding Father John Quincy Adams worked throughout his life to free the slaves. Stephanopoulos, somewhat flabbergasted, flatly rejects the notion that Adams was a Founder. Bachmann’s complete response is condensed below:

“Well if you look at one of our Founding Fathers, John Quincy Adams, that’s absolutely true. He was a very young boy when he was with his father serving essentially as his father’s secretary. He tirelessly worked throughout his life to make sure that we did in fact one day eradicate slavery….Well, John Quincy Adams most certainly was a part of the Revolutionary War era. He was a young boy but he was actively involved.”

Here, Bachmann is very clear in describing who she is referring to. John Quincy Adams, being John Adams’ (a founding father) son, was indeed alive during the nation’s founding. In her statements, Bachmann did not confuse the historical characters, nor did she insinuate that the latter Adams was an adult at the time.

Her use of the words “Founding Fathers” is likely a more general reference to all of those individuals who were a part of the nation’s founding. Perhaps one could accuse her of exaggerating the boy’s role, but calling her “stupid, “insane” and “misinformed” is a bit of a stretch.

Throughout John Quincy Adams’ life he was a staunch opponent of slavery. His views, no doubt, were shaped in part by his father who, as is quoted above, hoped for the “total extirpation of slavery.”

You can watch the dialogue between Stephanopoulos and Bachmann below:

Was Michele Bachmann Unfairly Maligned Over Her Founding Fathers Comments?

Business Insider‘s Henry Blodget also decided to explore whether Bachmann’s statements had some validity. He writes:

Based on this article in Encyclopedia Brittanica, it seems fair to say that some of the founding fathers opposed slavery, and that some of them worked to limit it on the state level. But as a group they certainly didn’t work tirelessly to end it…

The commitment to the status quo (legalized slavery) among the “southern founders” was particularly strong, and the “northern founders” didn’t challenge this. Slavery remained legal in the northern states, even though few people owned slaves. And only one of the slave-owning “southern founders” actually freed his slaves after the nation was founded.

So did Michele Bachmann completely revise history when she said the founders worked tirelessly to end slavery? No.

But was Michele Bachmann correct? No.

Blodget is right that the Founders did not “work tirelessly” to end slavery, but it is possible that the elder Adams’ views inspired his sons. As historical documentation shows, these leaders may not have put their words into action, but many of them did, indeed, have serious qualms about slavery.

In the end, historical evidence seems to corroborate a basis for what Bachmann was saying. Embellishing is one thing and being flat out wrong is another. In this instance, the congressman barely scratches the surface of the former and certainly is nowhere near the latter.

Below, watch Jimmy Kimmel’s “Michele Bachmann’s Story of America,” in which she is, once again (though it is admittedly comical), maligned:

Look at the depth of historical detail which has resulted from what was an eminently defensible statement. She is facilitating the education of the American people, through leftist efforts to demonize her.

Now would someone care to tell me how many States there are in the United States? That discussion, presumably, will be much shorter. Only a complete and utter idiot would not know the answer.

If slavery wasn‘t even addressed until the 1800’s, why did the founders put the “3/5ths clause” into the Constitution???

Clearly, it was done so the southern slave-owners (whom were primarily DEMOCRATS!!!) wouldn’t be ab;e to get an over-abundance of representation in the House *which is determined by population) and thus have a near-unbeatable voting block! That’s all the evidence that is needed to show, beyond any doubt, that the foundsrs addressed the issue BEFORE there even WAS a U.S.A.!!!

@DBCrader Right that was the GB spin on things. The notion that the 3/5ths was related to their concern for slavery is interesting revisionist history. As you note it was related to who would control the Union. So at the time the North did not want to abolish slavery, because it would have tipped the scale towards the south via the population related representation in congress. It had much more to do with who would control the country in the early years, not a concern for slavery. Certainly, not because they felt the south would put slavery in the constitution. And the notion that Jefferson didn‘t want to have slaves but couldn’t run his plantation otherwise is akin to the folks who think getting rid of the minimum wage will help people. He simple could have taken the cost of upkeep for the slaves, divided by their numbers and given the money to them. What they would have left for another plantation to be slaves again.

This is just the way the liberal media try‘s to discredit Michelle Bachmann’s run for president. She (like Ron Paul) are enemies of both the left and right. The media is ok with your cookie cutter republican because they will grow government, it’s just in a different direction than the left. That’s ok with the media…just as long as the government is still growing.

Even if it were true that the founders were all slave owners, and never tried to free any of them, does that discredit everything they stood for in regards to Freedom, Limited Government, Individual Responsibility…I think not.

This is a circular argument meant to only trip Bachmann up and get people to think she is crazy…just like they have done to Ron Paul. It’s a shame.

THELONIUS & the Communist Left have only a few tricks in their bag. The favorite is to mock Faith, and call people “stupid”. They ignore the fact that Modern Science stands squarely on the shoulders of men who believed in God. Newton, Galileo, Pasteur, Capernicus, Georges Lemaître are just a few who come to mind.

There are MANY kinds of intelligence: scientific, mathematic, financial, relational, artistic, communicative, etc. The PROBLEM is that history is riddled with “INTELLIGENT” people who were also brutal, thieves, liars, cheats, mass murderers, etc.

Intelligence ALONE is not what makes a great President. It is only a part of a combination of greater characteristics: INTEGRITY, HONESTY, and an unshakeable allegiance to the CONSTITUTION come to mind.

Michelle is NOT unintelligent, and she poses a REAL threat to Obama. This is why the media is nearly breaking their legs rushing to their cameras/computers to shout her down as “stupid”. Their job of keeping Obama in office becomes easier if America just dismisses other possibilities.

I personally think that Bachmann is not Presidential qualified UNLESS she is running against an even less qualified person: Obama. I also think that DEMS/LIBERALS with NO RECORD they can defend will try in every way to paint every CONSERVATIVE as a ‘nut case’. When asked any question that the candidate is NOT 100% sure of, their response should be: MY general impression of that time period was….. or MY General information about that is….. or “let me tell you my vision for America now”
And not be caught in a quick-sand trap. Most people do NOT know their HISTORY, and most have been taught an “anti-American version” of our History and without a IRREFUTABLE SOURCE of the facts, all questions about “founding fathers” etc. are subjective. I would say that ” Since when are you more interested in what I believe Washington (George) said than what I would do about ….” (whatever the subject is).
Until GLENN came along, no one ever spoke of the “founding fathers”. Maybe more and more people will tune in to GBTV now (GlennBeck.com) and learn for themselves. Excuse me, but what do you think the 3/5 Clause was ABOUT, kids?!?!

That was part of the original Constitution, and it most certainly was a hot topic of debate between Northern Founders and Southern Founders at the Constitutional Convention. The 3/5 Clause was the Northern Founders attempt from OUR COUNTRY’S INCEPTION to eliminate slavery.

They knew the South had a larger population, especially if slaves were counted when deciding representation in the House. The 3/5 Clause didn’t say all black people were counted as 3/5, but only slaves, regardless of their color.

In this way, former or free slaves could be counted as a whole person, but slaves could not. This helped ensure greater representation for Northern states and less for Southern, Pro-Slavery states. In this way, they tried to put a mechanism into the Constitution from the beginning to eliminate slavery.

You are correct Jaycen, if it weren’t for the 3/5th clause we might still have slavery today because the Southern Slave Owners would have had a constant majority in both houses of Congress and had an unbeatable advantage in the electoral college.

It’s also important to note that the Declaration of Independence was originally written to say “Life, Liberty, and Property“ not ”the Pursuit of Happiness”. They changed that because of slavery and the fact that Slave Owners claimed that slaves where property, and they’d have a Constitutional Right to have them.

Kind of funny that the Southern Slave states looked at slaves as Property when it came to the Declaration but as human beings in the Constitution, so they could use their numbers to gain a political advantage. Although the American Progressive movement began in the late 1800‘s early 1900’s, there was a trace of it all the way back then.

Further, he accompanied his father to europe at the start to find funding, arms, support, etc., so he was very involved. Now was he at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787? She seems to be wrong factually on one and hypocritical on the other.

If Ms Bachmann is no longer paying federal income tax, then there might be an avenue for arguing against accepting federal funds, but in the absence of that, it becomes an insane argument. It’s the same thing with states. If the residents of a state are still paying federal income tax and other federal taxes, then notwithstanding their not voting for leftists, or agitating for lower taxes and a smaller federal government, they are still elegible for stimulus or other federal funds that commie states are receiving.

I agree with you Encinom. I know that Beck began his radio career at age 16 so it’s not farfetched to assume that he had little interest in History, a notoriously laborious subject to most high-schoolers. I was testing the waters on this article and it’s as I expected. Beck’s fans are incredibly loyal and unprepared to be skeptical of his grandiose assumptions. To be fair, I could never be convinced by their arguments about gun control, christian values, or Obama‘s unintelligence so I’m not surprised that my radical statements were immediately pissed upon. What I am frustrated about is that we can’t have heated arguments wherein I can call Bachmann names (for she’s in the public spotlight and inviting of the insults) without everybody resting on their ideological laurels. MARXISM, COMMUNISM, MUSLIM APOLOGIST, LEFT, LIBERAL = BAD… FREE-MARKET, SMALL GOVERNMENT, CHRISTIAN, RIGHT, CONSERVATIVE = GOOD. WOO! Clean house in 2012!

No, the Founders did not attempt to end slavery, the 3/5 clauses only prolonged slavery as it gave the South advantiage with its ratio of representatives to voters (or is Bachmann, Beck going to argue slaves voted). The Foundes were mortal men, not tbagging Gods. The Founders made mistakes.

      @Wildbill

Oxford Guide to the US Government:

Civil rights and civil liberties often mean the same thing. The words are frequently used interchangeably to signify the protection of rights to liberty and equality under the Constitution, such as freedom of speech, protection against “unreasonable searches and seizures,” and the right to due process of law. The term civil rights, however, is also used to refer to positive actions by the government to protect or extend the rights of people—to provide for individuals or groups opportunities that were previously denied to them. These kinds of civil rights guarantees usually are provided through statutes, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which gives the federal government the power to prevent an employer from denying a job to someone because of the person’s race, gender, religion, or ethnic origin.

I would argue that by denying someone the right to live, you are denying them the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a democratic society.

Hello. If the founders had included freeing the slaves in the founding of our nation the southern states that were not populated enough and was mostly farmland would have not joined the USA, this would later be played out in the Civil War. So yes, Bachman was right so, my suggestion is to read a book!

Yes. How the Founding Fathers grappled with the issue of slavery while creating the Declaration of Independence and later the Constitution was complicated. Many in the more populous and non-agricultural north were very vocal opponents of slavery. Men like John Adams. Founders from the southern plantation states depended on slaves to operate their farms and grow crops. It wasn’t an issue in those days of just freeing them all and paying them a wage. They would have gone out of business quickly and they knew it. That fact pained leaders like Washington and Jefferson. They would have liked to operate their plantations differently. It just wouldn’t have been possible. So, the issue of abolishing slavery loomed large in their consciences, but ultimately kept getting deferred decade after decade until the Civil War ultimately forced them to deal with it. Bottom line: I believe that many of the founding fathers would have liked to abolish slavery from the outset, but it became clear that they could not unite on the issue.

Woodweaver, yes the south would have suffered economically, which would not have been a good thing at all for the new Nation. But the fact remains that many Founders did fight for the end of slavery, not just at the Constitutional Convention, but for years after. If you look at the history after the country got its start, during the 1840′s right up to the Civil War, it was THE hot topic. Look at the debates between Clay and Calhoun on the slavery issue.

No because she was dead wrong. The phrase worked tirelessly does not mean they thought about it being bad and had to negotiate with the southerners to get the union started. Virtually all of them including Benjamin Franklin that GB referenced on his comedy radio show had slaves. He had 3. If these men were the most powerful men in the country at the time, then why would it take 100+ years later then to address the issue. Thought about it, concerned about it, maybe…. Worked tirelessly no way. M. Bachmann is one of those individuals who sees, hears and perceives the world based on a irrationally conservative religious filter. Unlike Palin who is a money driven fraud, it seems that M. Bachmann actually believes what she says regardless of how wrong it is.

      Name calling = Logical Argument

      FAIL

So, the 3/5 Clause in the original Constitution was anti-slavery. It was the Northern states attempts to weed out Southern states power over time and ultimately eliminate slavery. You could only count a slave (notice they didn’t specify color) as 3/5 of a person when deciding on representation in the House.

Freed slaves could be counted as a whole human being. In this way, there was a built-in mechanism to encourage Southerners to free their slaves, and any free or escaped slaves could come to the North and bolster their representation in Congress.

This wasn’t an amendment, it was an original part of the Constitution. It was a hot topic for debate in the Continental Congress. It almost shut down the entire procedings. This is why the Founders were “hypocritical”. They knew digging in their heals on this topic would prevent unity and ratification.

Another illogical comment. the 3/5 Clause permitted the South to have an increased number of members of Congress to block any action against the grand southern tradition of slavery. Additoinally, voting rights were determined by State law until the 1900′s. First only lad owners were permitted to vote, then only white males, even after the civil war Jim Crow laws prevent the vast majority of former slaves and african americans from voting, what makes you think that the South would have allowed freed slaves to jepordize its traditions.

It was the federal government, in the early 1900s, when Democrats took the majority that repealed federal civil rights laws that made it possible for states to enact voter laws preventing blacks from voting.

Blacks voted Republican until the KKK started killing Republicans. FDR didn’t do anything about civil rights laws but got the black vote with special projects for blacks. Blacks have voted Democrat since. Obama used a similar scheme with his tax rebate for all who paid less than $1000 in federal income tax, which fits is about 50% of the households nationwide.

@Jaycen – you are wrong about one thing. They did not count slaves as 3/5 of a human being – they counted 3/5 of the TOTAL NUMBER of other persons (i.e. slaves). That is a VERY big difference. The whole 3/5s of a human being BS is a revision of history.

We are certainly raising some fine humble people these days, that doesn’t speak well for our parenting skills. This can only lead to hate and war. Your choice, people still have to live together. Lincoln should be known as a treasonous thug guilty of thousands of war crimes that made acts done by Saddam and his sons seem tame in comparison. Ordering southern pow’s to be wintered in tents with out winter clothing and food so 80% of them starved or froze to death parallels with anything Hitler did. Bingo Jaycen, spot on.

The founders believed that slavery would soon just “go away”. Until the invention of the cotton gin

The cotton gin and steam power were then final 2 nails in slavery, after they were invented, there was nothing for the slaves to do in the winter, it wasn’t economically viable to feed/house them 365 days a year and only get 6 months worth of work from them. Over 1/3 had been freed when the Civil war was forced on us in a move that paralleled Obamacare passage in scope of deception. The rest would have been freed and made share croppers within 20 years at most. Unfortunately the steam engine also meant the south no longer needed the north’s fast moving rivers to spin/weave fabric/grind corn/wheat into flour, so the rich north progressive liberals that empowered their puppet Lincoln saw their pending loss of power and manufactured a way to come south and take all they could take and burn what they couldn’t. Lincoln was a true dog, had he not been shot, he planned to send the blacks back to Africa to be enslaved/slaughtered by the Muslims northern slave traders originally bought them from.

Obama is working doing this again, but this time with the red states vs the blue states.

What I think is happening here is revealed in Revelations 6.

The first of the 7 seals are opening up right before our very eyes. I’m no scholar, but I’m not uneducated, I’m also not educated to the point of ignorance like most liberals, atheists and progressives or blinded by the narrow minded MSM.

I’ll leave it to the reader to do his own research Into the 7 seals, however it is with several resources that I use to conclude the “conquest” in the first seal is to strip the world of God, the Jesus God, the author of Heaven and Earth.

It won’t be a long period between the seals, so if you’re not ready to accept the first one, I would like to warn you that the 2nd seal will be really challenging for you spiritually.

With that said, Prophesy Revealed cannot be denied, though it can be ignored.

Which is better for society, Man’s law under Shariah law, or God’s law under Christian principles? I think the answer is clear. Since God made all of us. If man chooses to continue to shake their fist in God’s face, God will allow the destruction of this country, just as He finally allowed the disbanding of the nation of Israel because of their sin. Let us become a nation of people ready to DO God’s will by worshiping Him and Doing to others as we would Do for ourselves. Not a covetous people always seeking another God – the TV, Boat, PC or other leisure games; or money or anything in place of Him! God is NOT a respecter of ANY people. He will Bless the humble and allow the proud to be dammed. It is our choice as a people, let us get our priorities straight and worship and love our Creator. We are the creature and He is the Creator.

Leave Bachmann alone. She is NOT perfect, but neither are ANY of us! Do we have a gaff-free president? no. How about the gaff-king, our vice-president? We even laugh at his stupidity at times. So, why do we attack ANY person who runs for office based upon sound principles of God? Since NONE of us are perfect, look at the message being transferred and not so much the examples being offered. In this case Bachmann was letting us know her character. What is wrong with that? Isn’t she allowed to have character? Are we still a free nation with free speech or are we already under the influence of Communist Marxism?

      @JROOK

I am an advocate of reading the words of those who actually participated in the historical events under scrutiny, and, of course, the research conducted by any reliable, impartial historical researcher. Many tend to look at history through the lens of presentism, and harshly judge the founders, or believe that slavery was peculiar to the US and the period. I trust that you know better. However, I would take issue with the idea that the Founders didn’t understand the significance of slavery and their desire to mitigate their misdeeds.

I have read extensively on Franklin, and although I am aware that he had different servants during different periods of his life, and I know that he owned many properties and businesses, and some of those had slaves, I was not aware that he personally had slaves. Can you provide a verifiable source? I would like to research your assertion.

Additionally, Franklin became one of the first outspoken abolitionist of his time, as did other Founders. It didn’t “take 100+ years later then to address the issue.” The issue was a contentious issue before long before the Revolution, and certainly at the forefront of political debate to the run up of the Republican party, which was established specifically to end the slave holding practices of the Southern Democrat slave holders.

“Embellishing is one thing and being flat out wrong is another”

No, embellishing is a type of wrong. If a statement doesn’t match the facts, it’s wrong. The statement that the Founding Fathers “worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.”, is wrong.

They clearly didn’t “work tirelessly” to end slavery. And they didn’t do anything “until slavery was no more in the United States”, because they were long dead by that time.

It’s one thing to occasionally confuse dates and names, but a statement like this is completely different. It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of American history. This romanticized view of our Founding Fathers as men ordained with unquestionable moral and ethical purity who created America in their unblemished image, is not only an inaccurate fairy tale, it doesn’t do justice to the true story of America.

America wasn’t born perfect. It was an imperfect union born into the sin of slavery. It was only the true tireless and courageous actions of countless men and women who fought against the systemic injustice around them, that ended slavery, Jim Crowe laws, segregation, and not only made it so women could vote, they can run for president. This spirit is why I’m proud of my country, and I always have hope for the future.

To say that the Founder Founder “worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States.” is to completely discard the courage and sacrifices of those who actually did.

If I may contribute one fact to your very correct reading for the demise of Slavery, It would be the importation of cheap labor flooding into the country. Land owners soon learned the economics of just paying someone a wage and not having to provide shelter, food, clothing, medical and taking care of them when they are to old or to sick to work. It soon became clear that giving workers a few coins a day was cheaper and ales pain in the a*ss

What the hell is a theocratic strip mall? Your problem and fear is that the conservative movement has started to wake up and move. As a group we are getting tired of seeing those who don’t produce anything demanding more from those that do. Yes!!! the minimum wage does create unimployment. If everything you buy or do costs more because the kid washing dishes and the snotty teen behind the counter make $10. an hour, you have less business coming to the shop. Not to mention the people that had worked themselves up to $10. an hour now find themselves at minimum wage and their cost of living has just increased.
We need to get the government and unions out of price fixing and let the free market set the price of doing business.

Actually she didn’t say ALL the Founders worked tirelessly. During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, the northern delegates did work tirelessly to include the slaves in the new free Republic. But Founders from the South were unremitting. Finally, the argument came to a compromise, the 3/5 comromise. Where with slaves it would take 50,000 slaves instead of 30,000 to qualify one representative in the House. This was the best the anti-slave delegates could get and still get a Constitution. They were also satisfied that this would eventually erradicate slavery, as the South would realize sooner or later they were losing power and taxes by not counting slaves as a whole vote. If not for this compromise we would not have had a Constitution or a country. Further, a viable, economically thriving south as well as a north were essential to the well-being and development of the new Nation.

Michelle needs to think before she speaks. No the founders did not fight tirelessly to end slavery. Yes some founders wanted slavery ended but knew as said it would require the acting of the Legislature. Michelle continuously says ignorant stuff. It seems she is trying to hard to be founder like when she’s not. She voted for the Patriot Act which expanded Government. She is for Government marriage, expansion of Government.  Say what you mean, mean what you say.

The only flaw in your 3/5th interpretation is that at the time of the “compromise”, 11 of the new states – former colonies, were slave holders. At the time of the Constitutional signing, only 2 states were free, Massachusetts and Vermont. The issue of slave representation had application to all the northern states holding slaves just as it did the southern. Not to mention the importation of slaves was principally controlled by northern ports. These northern shipping interests delayed by Congressional acts the importation ban until the 1830′s.

Jefferson was prevented from berating slavery in the Declaration of Independence by the fact all 13 colonies held and sanctioned slavery at the time of its drafting. At the time of the founders, slavery was not a uniquely southern institution.

The only real punitive decision would have been to count them as zero. The anti-Federalists chewed this topic over much more in-depth than the Federalists. The southern states obviously did not see any threat to them by the 3/5th clause, as they adopted the same into their Constitution of 1861.

The lesson here is that the Founders were trying to form the free-est government ever known for its citizens. Had this model not suceeded, real freedom would have been out of the reach of any man – slave or not. You cannot bequeath something you never had, if you are not free – you cannot pass freedom on to another.

There were many fewer slaves in the northern states than in the southern. That meant that the 3/5 clause benefited the southern states more than the northern.

By 1800, most of the northern states had either abolished or at least “sunsetted” slavery. (New Jersey sunsetted it so far out that there were still a couple of slaves in NJ on the eve of the Civil War, but the rest of the North–excepting border states–was slave-fee well before the CW.

The importation of slaves was abolished in 1808, not 1830. Laws restricting importation had been passed in stages since 1794. The 1807 act made slave trade equivalent to piracy.

emcee and jrook thanks for posting, and I appreciate the other thoughtful comments as well. I agree that the idea that our country was born pristine and perfect is an illusion. The Founding Fathers, many of whom had slaves, were not perfect and all their words were colored by the times they lived in.

The history of the human race is replete with atrocities that, at the time, were considered not only moral, but the way to Heaven. I try to never judge people outside the morality of the times the lived in, but I give exceptional credit to those who had the forsight to rise above their times, as several of the Founding Fathers did on the issue of slavery. There were Greek philosophers to felt women should have a status equal to men, something that didn’t happen for two thousands years, if it has even now.

But no, Bachmann, the Founding Fathers didn’t “work tirelessly” to end slavery. We can be proud of our country without “controlling the past” as Aldous Huxley did in “1984.”

The problem is that way too many middle school teachers are leftists who hate American history, and are continually trying to revise it to fit their warped world view. They teach pap, or propaganda and students come out being dumbed down. They don’t do any better job of teaching math, science and english. But the teachers have really sabatoged the historical knowledge of the citizens over the years. Not entirely their fault as leftists in higher controlling positions have selectedd the History books that are to be used, and the teachers having come up through the system, and being victim to their marxist professors in college, are none the smarter regarding their revisionist teaching.

Actually that was a Freudian slip. There is 57 states. HE knows its, but they stopped teaching it in school some decades back apparently.

50 states of the Union called America and the “United States” comprised of D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, Palau, Micronesia making a total of 57 states, and as you should know Obama was just in Puerto Rico.

Look at the Statute of whatever state you are in and you will find something similar to :(23) “State”, applied to any one of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the commonwealths, possessions, states in free association with the United States, and the territories. “United States” includes the District of Columbia and the commonwealths, possessions, states in free association with the United States, and the territories.

Arizona’s is 2-215 etc. The “United States” is a foreign nation and they are NOT part of the Union, but they are part of the Country known as the “US”.

If you read history you will find that slavery was started in America by a BLACK MAN who was a lawyer. He had two men working for him that were indentured servants, meaning they owed him a lot of money and were working it off as a slave. The two escaped and the Black man lawyer took them to court for failing to uphold their bargain to work off their debt. Of the two men one owed more than the other he was BLACK and the courts said that because he owed so much he would virtually become owned by the Black Lawyer and thus slavery was born. But go ahead and blame all the Founding Fathers if you must because if you stand in the flame of truth you will not be burned.
