Was NC Gov. Perdue Really Joking About Suspending Elections? Listen to the Audio

On Wednesday, reports started surfacing that Democratic North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue had made some curious statements about elections. Mainly, she said that she thought the country should suspend Congressional elections for two years in order to “help this country recover.” The remarks quick started making their way around the internet, and many people were appalled.

Perdue’s team quickly did damage control and suggested the remarks were a joke. But now, audio has surfaced the remarks calling that explanation into question.

First, here is a transcript of the remarks:

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that,” Perdue said. “You want people who don’t worry about the next election.”

This, however, is how the remarks were actually delivered:

And here’s the reaction from NC GOP Party spokesman Rob Lockwood:

“Listen to the Governor’s words, she wasn’t joking at all. The Congressional Democrats are wildly unpopular in North Carolina, so she may have been trying to invent a solution to save their jobs from public accountability.”

“If it was a joke, what was the set-up? What was the punch-line? Where was the pause for laughter? It took them hours to say it was a ‘joke,’ but when that flopped, it became ‘hyperbole.’ We’ll just call it an unconstitutionally bad-idea.”

From the sound of the remarks, it doesn’t really seem like a joke. In fact, the News-Observer reported at the time that, “It’s unclear whether Perdue, a Democrat, is serious — but her tone was level and she asked others to support her on the idea.”

However, it‘s worth pointing out that we can’t see Perdue’s face, and we don’t know if she was smiling or gesturing during the remarks. Yet. And the governor’s office told the Daily Caller it is still standing behind its claim that the remarks were a joke.

    Opps, Did I let our plan slip out?…..I sure am sorry y’all. I was supposed to wait for Obama to give me (And several others) the signal. This is like something out of “Seven Days in May” only it’s the sitting President that wants to cancel elections “Due to a National Crisis ”. PASS THIS BILL NOW!       If I’m not mistaken, this exact scenario was ‘hypothesized’ at the very beginning of the present administration. Democrats feel that NOW is the time to make the ‘switch’ to full blown socialism. The pathway to full blown communism.

      BHO has certainly been the catalyst for a lot of this type activity. Hasn’t he?

      if she was joking, NOONE in the audience “got it” …because there was NO response AT ALL to those remarks… the people in the audience should be ashamed for not gasping and booing that bag off stage IMO.

      she should be hung for that remark… to call for suspension of elections within a republic IS TREASON.

      Just did a search NBC,CBS,ABC did not have a single story on this CNN had one but it was buried and you had to searcg to find it……
      AND THEY WONDER WHY NO ONE BELEIVES A WORD THEY SAY.
      Here we have an elected representative calling for one of the most unconstitutional and treasonist action you can porpose and the big three are hiding it.

      From comments like, “Never let a good crisis go to waste…” to this latest tragic revelation from the Leftists, we can see how evil people desire to manufacture an incident or series of same, (ala‘ the Reich Stag burning in Hitler’s Germany-the Obamanazis do remember history),so they would LOVE to suspend elections in favor of staying in power. Hugo Chavez did it in Venezuela, why would the Obamafuerher “think” he couldn’t get away with it? The US Constitution means absolutely nothing to him and others of his political ilk.       She let it slip out that all the Democrats know that the Republican (Tea Party) takeover of the house in 2010 is going to pale in comparison to the landslide that Republicans (Tea Party) representatives are going to win in 2012. They figure if they suspend elections in congress in 2012 at least the Democrats will have a few seats. I believe in 2012 that after the elections the Democrats will finally realize just how small of a minority they really are.

      She’s running scared for her job in 2012. The republicans in my state took majority control (both house and senate) after 145 years of democratic control in the 2010 election. My representatives are going to hear from me. Not sure our representatives can do anything about it until she actually tries to suspend the elections but it’s worth a shot.

      Where are the FBI on these comments? They are seditious and therefore worthy of imprisonment at the very least.Too many people are getting away with hate-inciting and seditious speeches. It’s time to realign the debate and clearly define the boundaries of what is and what is not acceptable as political debate and banter. Free speech aside, there is a point (and it has been crossed a long time ago, even in Bush Jr’s day) where sedition and hate spoil the free speech of concerned citizens. If some one stands in opposition of going to war in Iraq, respect them for that, hear what they have to say; they aren’t being “unpatriotic; both sides are never completely right. But if some one says suspend an essential part of the political process that is seditious. When Bill Vander Zalm, as Premier of British Columbia spoke of banning the Province News paper because they were digging up his dirty deeds as Premier, he should have been removed from office and jailed. The privilege of being a political leader comes with a responsibility to show proper respect in the public debate forum. Immunity should not be granted anyone to speak against the process or institutions considered essential to the constitutionally established norms. Western civilization is fragile. It needs protection. Where are our protectors?

      Actually, Bev, they ought to suspend congress entirely and let the economy take care of itself. Almost the entire economy is the result of government meddling: into the retirement business (Social Security), healthcare business (Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare), the banking business (the Fed), the mortgage business (Fannie and Freddie), the auto business (GM, Chrysler), the oil and energy business (the EPA), the airline and other transportation business (NTSB) and so on. When we have a mammoth out of control government picking winners and losers, is it any wonder we have a mammoth out of control financial institution when the government is propping up it’s worst characteristics and keeping it from failing like it should?

      I hope she just sealed her fate when she comes up for re-election. I’m sure Obama threw her under the bus just like he has so many others. She’s not smart enough to come up with this on her own. But if you want to fool around with the elections, Bev, wouldn‘t it be smarter to have the elections EARLY so Congress doesn’t have to worry about the elections and work on fixing the economy? You want to leave the ones in Congress who got us in this mess to try to fix it! Come on! We need fresh blood. The longer someone stays in politics the more corrupt they become. Kick ‘um all out!

      Experts indicate that if there is announcement, during the next three months, that the White House has been evacuated due to an invasion of space aliens that only the first clause will be true. There has been a plan on the books to fake an alien invasion for decades. The purpose of the event would be to justify martial law, which, of course, would mean no elections. And, of course, we would still, no doubt, need to turn in our guns, no matter how scary the aliens might be. We need to past laws, at the state level, to trigger automatic secession in case of a federal declaration of martial law and amendments to state constitutions setting the same requirements for ownership of real estate as for becoming the President of the United States. Only citizens should be permitted to own land, and certainly, no foreign or foreign-owned corporations — therefore, no corporations. Corporations could rent real estate from real people, but not own it.

THEY KNOW what they will say before they say it, so they KNOW what will be a joke and what won’t. Since she stated it was a joke AFTER someone called her on it, THEN IT WAS NO JOKE WHEN SHE SAID IT.

      What is wrong with those 44%? THEY ARE TROLLS WHO ARE TRYING TO TILT THE STATS.
      The problem I see with Democrats is that 99% of them give the rest a very bad name!

      That’s one of the most sneaky, underhanded tactics the left has come up with. …And most people don’t seem to be catching it. “The next election” for any candidate means that candidate must carry out the will of the people who will be voting. Otherwise, they won’t get reelected. What’s good for the country is not for the government to decide. If they are focusing on the next election, that means they are doing their job right by listening to the will of the people.

      @ BUM: This Congress has not earned the confidence of their BOSS, the American voter. This Congress has the lowest approval rating in my lifetime.       It IS a big deal, American! For these politicians to SUSPEND OUR RIGHT TO ELECTIONS, even jokingly, is anti-constitutional – PERIOD, you idiot.       AND Bev knows that she’s up for reelection next year…of course she’s not joking. Seeing as she rode in on BHO’s coattails, she’s bound to be more than a bit worried about that. I live in NC, and I feel I should apologize for Bev. But I didn’t vote for her, never would, so all I can say is I’m sorry for the image that she has shown to others about the great state of NC.     If I’m running against her in the next election, I just found my 60 second sound bite for all of my political ads. If we had a media that wasn’t in the tank for the Dems, this statement should be front and center on every interview she does but we know it won’t. The really sad part about this is that most of the population are ignorant what the Constitution is and says. Therefore, this won’t be anything that will cause her any great harm.

      Don’t laugh too hard — you’d better think hard about this and how it is a real possibility that “an emergency” could happen and for the good of the country and protection of the people elections could be suspended… especially if the muslim in OUR White House thinks he may not get reelected.

      He’s went around the law in the past and not a single person has the ba77s to put a stop to his illegal anti-constitutional actions, so going a step further doesn’t seem that far-fetched.

      We had all better get out and start becoming more and more publically vocal against the attrocities that are happening to our country and our system.

      Part of the libs game plan, stop 2012 elections at all cost because some people are waking up. Look for a lot more good things to come. Yes, I agree on the term limits, One and out, no re-elections and no lifetime pensions. Public service should be just that, service. What we do now is not public service, it’s a lifetime license to steal.

      Indeed this was no joke, this was nothing more than a test by the administration of Obama for their next move to strip even more authority and power away from the people and the Congress as they finish the establishment of a socialist govenrment.

      Expect and executive decree/fiat to come down the line shortly declaring that the power will be passed onto these committees and such instead of remaining in the hands of the Congress where it is suppose to remain.

    The people of North Carolina should demand her resignation immediately. All she and Obama’s councel of Governors need do is create a crisis then declare a state of emergency in an attempt to shut down this Nation and strip our Freedoms…. for our own good because we are just to stupid to know what is good for us.     The Gov. was functioning as a dummy for the leftist machine. The dimocrats no longer ARE Democrats, but have been so infiltrated by marxists, communists, socialists that they have no moral center any longer. gov. perdue just mouthed what was fed to her by the “higher ups” (really, “LOWER DOWNS”) in her party.

    Her non-allegiance to AMERICA is staggering.

    It is a perfect example of churchianitans who are loyal to denominations, but have been so lost in political correctness that they no longer are CHRISTIANS following CHRIST, but rather follow denomination-speak.

      I agree that she mouthed what was given to her, but I submit that she “mouthed” it on purpose. The DEM’s know that she has a history of a BIG mouth and her ability to stick her foot in it quite frequently. Therefore, she is the perfect one to “mouth” such a thing and see just how much outrage she would cause. I believe that this was a test and it was a very public one. I know how communists operate and this is a fine example of a “feeler” and a “tenderizer.” Outrageous comments become acceptable over time and then they turn them around and have the outrage become the standard. It’s conditioning. They are CONDITIONING us.

Heard Bill O’Reilly tell a guest that “Tea Party” was diminishing now…blah, blah.       Being retired military and the parent of 3 current military members don’t think for one minute that the military would back an socialist move against the citizens. It just won’t happen. Less than 20% of military personnel identify themselves as Democrats and fewer will admit to being Liberal and Obama knows it. Why do you suppose military absentee ballots are sent out late in most Democrat controlled states so their votes aren’t counted?
