Do Faith & Comedy Go Together? These Comedians Think So (Poll)

Do faith and comedy complement one another? It sure seems that way, as the USA Today reports that Christians, Jews and Muslims are apparently part of “a fresh wave of humor” that is sweeping clergy and comics, alike.
As laughter is a uniting force, it seems its increasing presence in, among and between faith communities is a welcome distraction from the contentious social and political debates that often surround faith and religion.
There’s a new breed of faith leaders and comics who seem intent on adding some entertainment into the mix to take off the edge. The jokes that these comedians and religious figures use, though rooted in each faith system, are contemporary in nature.
Take, for instance, Islamic comic Azhar Usman, who tours the United States. The title of his show? “Allah Made Me Funny.” In his routine, he quips about Islamic customs, common misconceptions and the like. Below, see him in action:
Then there’s Jesuit priest and humorist James Martin who believes wholeheartedly that jokes and comedy are much-needed in the church and among Christian believers.
He even has a new book out, which addresses this issue: “Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life.”
“Humor is a sign of God’s creativity. Look at giraffes,” he says. “If Jesus didn’t have a sense of humor, he wouldn’t have been fully human. People who can’t laugh have a wrong-headed notion about Christianity and the Bible.”
In one example of Martin’s humor, he says that St. Lawrence, a martyr in 258 A.D., said the following as he roasted over coals: “This side is done. Turn me over and have a bite.”
Below, watch Martin discuss the importance of jokes and comedy to the whole of Christianity:
But using humor among the religious does have its risk. There’s a certain environment that people expect in church and some comments coming from the pulpit, if they aren’t vetted properly, may not go over so well.
As the Christian Post’s Allison Summer writes, “Humor has always been somewhat of a taboo subject in various religions, not just Christianity, with many displaying reservations about incorporating it into their spiritual lives.”
However, in today’s world many religious people believe that belief in a higher power and laughter go hand-in-hand. The USA Today has more:
Liel Leibovitz, who writes Blessed Week Ever, a weekly Torah column for the Jewish magazine Tablet, doubts anyone could believe in God without laughing.
“There’s shared DNA between faith and humor. Both are attempts to deal with fundamental human anxiety and things you can’t control. That’s why so many rabbis and priests walk into a bar at the beginning of jokes. Laughing gets you past the anxiety,” Leibovitz says. “There are Torah passages that crack me up. Look at the Israelites at Mount Sinai. God is about to reveal himself and everyone is in chaos. The about-to-be-chosen people want to know, ‘Can we transfer this membership card to someone else?’
What do you think? Does comedy belong in the pulpit? Take our poll:

What is “Truth” ?
Report Post »Pastor Melissa
Posted on October 15, 2011 at 12:36pmTruth is an ever flowing spring of wisdom that flows from God. We are in constant search of God’s truth as it relates to us and others. Therefore there should never be a moment where we are not searching while at the same time sharing what we have discovered.
When it comes to biblical truth: When I was in elementary school I was very open about sharing my knowledge regarding the Old Testament stories. I was astonished how God was involved way back when.
When I was in high school I was very open about how God could send a Son to die in my place.
In college I was astonished and shared how creation and science are so intricately woven together.
Now, I learn every day as I do sermon prep or read a commentary. Biblical truth does not come without knowledge of how it relates to the real world and how God inspires us to understand it.
Truth, on it’s own is a difficult word to describe. It only exists in relation to what is around it. For example, it is true that if I jump I will eventually come back down. This is a truth… unless you are in a 0 gravity chamber, in which case it is a falsehood. I believe God is THE truth. What that means to me and who I teach every Sunday depends on one thing: am I willing to completely sacrifice my personal feelings in order to appreciate and understand God’s wisdom. This is impossible to completely do but it is the ultimate goal to strive for in any Christian context.
You ask a very difficult question. Right up there with “What

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 5:25pmOldTruckers, – What is “Truth” ?
Truth is true, it is absolute, trustworthy, backed up by clear evidence.
Report Post »Truth is so clear that anyone who wants to argue its truthfulness becomes a fool because of the evidence that supports truth.
Gravity is a truth, even though we cannot see it.
Because of the evidence of all created matter, plants, animals and humans, we know this, we know that we have a Creator. The evidence is there in so much abundance that we look foolish denying it.
For an example what if I asked “how did we get the skin that covers our body”, why is it not like a dog’s skin? Or a bird? If anyone is honest with themselves they have to realize that our “skin” is a fantastic organ, healing itself, moisturizing itself, it is waterproof, leak-proof, even if injured it forms a protective seal, a scab to promote healing. Skin, and everything else was designed by God! That is just one very important truth.
I have also found, because of the evidence, God’s Word is Truth. – Psalms 119:160

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 1:53pmTruth is what is FACT,and that fact makes it a reality.
When under the influence of gravity you are a land dwelling creature, and when under the influence of 0 gravity you are still a land dwelling creature that knows what it’s like to be a bird!

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 3:35pmI am not suggesting the truth comes from the Daily show, just that comedy plays a large roll into the audience the Daily Show gets. Humor has pushed the ratings higher than a normal news broadcast. Churches should take that to heart as they think about how they share the Good news with others. Jesus celebrated with the disciples. It wasn’t all serious 100% of the time.
And the reason it is important to bring up… the atheist is getting more viewers than the 700 club.

Jesus Tells / teaches us in Holy Scripture what truth is, I guess you are NOT a student of Holy Scripture, otherwise you would know what truth is ?
Just for you “Old Trucker” ; John 17:17, ( 17 being the “LORD”S Prayer) “Sanctify them through thy truth, THY WORD IS TRUTH”.
Chapter 17 of John we see Jesus is praying to the Father, (this is “The Lord’s Prayer), for his disciples, and all others who will believe, and in verse 17 of this chapter 17, he asked the Father to sanctify them, (set apart) believers / followers, through God’s Truth, which is The Word of God, Jesus!

In the gospel of John, chapter 17 (which is the “LORD’S PRAYER”), in verse 17 Jesus declares what truth is:
“Sanctify them through thy truth: they word is truth” .Old trucker ask you “what is truth”, and you gave him some wordy worldly long drawn out exposition of YOUR thoughts on what truth is, when all you, “as a pastor”, had to do was give him the scripture verse where Jesus (God) declared what truth is ! Why, didn’t you just go to the authority on truth, God’s Word, and give that verse, that is all Old Trucker was in need of. God’s Word, why “pastor”?
Just wondering ?

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 12:52pmSo much to say:
Report Post »1. Humor is subjective. What is funny to one is not funny to another.
2. There are hundreds of working comedians who are Christian, working in churches combining christianity and laughter for an audience who will not go to comedy clubs because of the secular comedians and their content. It is a very good ministry.
3. Laughter is mentioned 39 times in the bible, none of the scriptures are about laughter but on the character of the persons laughing and reason for the laughter.
4. Laughter is good for the mind and the body and is known to have healing properties. God designed and created us to respond positivley to laughter.
5. Content is about you. If you laugh at material that is not honorable to God then that is your watermark to show you where you are, what you are drawn to, what you find entertaining and it’s a good measure to see if it matches to what God calls us to be and how much of that calling that you are willing to accept. That’s between you and God. You can’t determine where other people are in their walk, you aren’t them.
Laughter…it is the way of my people.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 2:18pmSALVATION OF OUR REPUBLIC IS IN THE HANDS OF INTERNATIONAL ORIENTAL GANGSTERS. PRE-ARMAGEDDEN IS A FORERUNNER OF INELUCTABLE DETERMINISM’S MENACE.
In the shadows of contemporary professional journalism and in the every day mental recesses of honorable layman, or hundreds of loose-minded mobs, lurks a well concealed fact, being implanted from the womb to the tomb. This mysterious spirit of iniquity can be traced back over a several thousands of years. Before the great deluge mother nature wreaked havoc upon mankind that fell into a trap of which was set up by the identical political forces having control over our Republican institution. It is impossible to segregate or divide the ever drifting of universal Judaic/Christian into an iron-fisted grasp, of any and all, of whom believe that the Constitution hallows no amalgamation or alliance between religion and state. George Washington and Thomas Paine agreed upon this matter, but Paine realized that a somewhat mysterious influence was amidst the Founding Fathers. Thus, Paine wound up in a French dungeon, for going against the ancient menace of ineluctable determinism’s hold upon any and all minds dwelling in the universal fields of pseudo-man made religions, as allied with political whoredom. Actually, for hundreds of years political reality was not to rock the boat. Of course, a few in number had not the intellectual ability to realize that they were merely tools of an already One World government scheme being concealed
