Washington Politicans Desperately Search for Actual ‘Adults’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Suddenly everyone in Washington wants to be an adult.
President Barack Obama’s repeated call for an “adult conversation” on spending is being echoed and rebutted by Republicans as the government reels toward a possible shutdown.
Obama says he wants to have an adult dialogue on the budget. Republican lawmakers contend they’re the ones trying to have a grown-up talk. Both sides are pointing fingers yet both have agreed to repeated delays in completing a budget to keep the government open for the last six months of the fiscal year.
The bickering might seem, well, childish, but the stakes are high as each side tries to win public opinion and display the leadership qualities to attract voters at the ballot box through 2012 and beyond.
The rhetoric heated up this week with Republicans and Democrats jockeying furiously for advantage as the prospect of a government shutdown Friday grew more real. Each day that passes with no deal seems to bring more talk of who‘s an adult and who’s not.
Obama on Tuesday emerged from a meeting with Democratic and Republican leaders and proposed “that we act like grownups.”
That same day House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., released a budget plan for calling for dramatic cuts, and laid down a challenge to Obama: “Americans are ready for honest talk. They’re ready to be spoken to like adults.”
When the White House attacked Ryan’s plan, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, jumped in to criticize the president.
“If he wants to have an ‘adult conversation’ about solving our fiscal challenges, he needs to lead instead of sitting on the sidelines,” the speaker said Wednesday.
Then the Republican National Committee added its voice, accusing Obama of ducking a meeting on the budget. “Adults don’t say one thing and do another,” the committee said.
Later Wednesday it was Obama trying to seize back the adult mantel at a town hall meeting in Pennsylvania. Voters, he said, want politicians to “act like adults, quit playing games, realize it‘s not just ’my way or the highway.’”
For Obama, who first called for an adult conversation on long-term fiscal issues at a press conference in February, it’s an attempt to put himself above the partisan fray, demonstrate firm leadership in a chaotic world and remind voters of his promise to change the way politics works in Washington.
For their part, Republicans are trying to set themselves up as the ones who can tackle the tough issues of leading Washington through the economic recovery and bringing down debts and deficits over the long term.
To voters, though, it might sound like the typical Washington back-and-forth, not adult behavior at all.
Yet perhaps for a politician the only thing worse than not acting like an adult, is acting like one, said Jack Pitney, a politics professor at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California
“Most people would agree that politicians should act like adults by making tough choices even when they are unpopular. So it‘s popular for politicians to say that they’ll do the unpopular thing. But when they actually do the unpopular thing, they are…unpopular,” Pitney said. “The lessons of adulthood are seldom happy ones.”

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 10:02amWell – what about this then..if they don’t make the cuts in current spending and pass a balanced budget agreement, we, as the “adults” who are paying for everything the “kids” in Washington are buying/spending/giving it away – simply cut the off the funds. It’s called a tax revolt – we simply don’t pay it. You don’t have to have your employer take your taxes out of your paycheck. renegogiate your employment contract or simply place “24” as number of dependents. No way the Feds can lock everyone up and if they try – you’ll see the new French-type revolution – which is not the revolution they want. We the people have to get the “children” in Washington to stop. Like an addict – cold turkey may be the only way.

The only time Obama, Reid, Pelosi, and their liberals allies lie awake at night is when they‘re trying to devise innovative new ways to take my money so they can redistribute it to their more worthy friends who don’t pay any federal income tax and just take from the system. Posted on April 7, 2011 at 8:27amThe bottom-line fear of the Democrat looter party in this country is this: that the government will shut down and….nothing will happen. As post-‘shutdown’ days roll by, Americans with brains (most of us) will come to realize what many of us have known for years, namely this: we do not need this federal government.
Then Americans with brains (again, most of us) will come to realize, whether by the bleating and moaning and crying of the government media, unions and other rank and file leech-like looters (who have survived solely on the forcibly-extracted-from-producers government handouts) or by the absence of anything bad happening post-‘shutdown’, that the federal government had become nothing more than a mob-protection-racket criminal enterprise.
The looter party’s fear boils down to the public coming to know this: To exist, producers do not need looters; the opposite cannot be said.
It is astounding to see how far America has fallen since January 20, 2009. I used to think there would be something left to save after 2012. But the country’s descent has been so rapid that “Thelma” Uhbammah may have already driven us off the cliff and we‘re halfway to the canyon floor and don’t even know it yet. In fact, it seems that the witless part of the country has bought the Dimocrat reasoning that ‘we’re doing OK…give him time’ solely because we have not hit bottom of the canyon yet.
History will show that America committed suicide by Uhbammah, solely because the public education system and laziness finally produced enough ignorant imbeciles in the country to vote for imposter garbage like Uhbammah. Why anyone with brains would listen to the anything the imbeciles who elected this Kenyan fraud have to say is beyond any human understanding.

Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is Chairman of the Budget Committee in the House of Representatives. He is also widely acknowledged to be one of the most fiscally conscious members of the Republican Party and of the conservative establishment.
It was, therefore, with much expectation that those concerned about the government’s fiscal condition awaited his blueprint budget proposal, which he calls The Path to Prosperity. The hope was that it would pave the way out of the predicament.
Disappointingly, it does not do so, even though many well-meaning people want to believe otherwise.
The first thing that should tip you off that something is seriously wrong with the proposal is that it does not balance the budget. Startling as it may sound, one of Washington’s leading fiscal hawks has no intention of bringing federal finances into balance anytime in the foreseeable future.
That the budget needs to be balanced immediately is be quite obvious. Having assumed more obligations than it can conceivably make good upon, the US federal government is for all practical purposes bankrupt. Taking on even more debt simply amounts to fiscal insanity.
This, however, is precisely what Ryan’s budget will do. He tries to conceal this by claiming that his proposal “puts the budget on the path to balance and pays off the debt.“ Notice the phrase ”on the path.” The question that we need to ask is: How long will this path be?
When you look at the summary tables at the back of The Path to Prosperity you will see that Ryan’s proposal still foresees a sizable deficit in 2021, the last year for which he makes projections.
Ryan apparently justifies his “on the path” claim by referring to a study by the Congressional Budget Office which estimates that under his plan the federal budget will balance by 2040. This is almost thirty years from now!
Is this how a serious and responsible leader should address the most serious fiscal crisis in this country’s history?
Year 2040 is obviously only a cop-out. Given the depth of our indebtedness, it is safe to say that if the spending and debt trends continue, the dollar will have collapsed by the end of this decade, if not sooner. It is enough to look at the climbing price of gold to see just how much confidence the world places in our rapidly failing currency.
Any serious budget cutter would insist that the budget be balanced straight away. If we are to have any chance of averting the impending collapse, it needs to be done now. This may seem radical in Washington, but this is the only way. No over-indebted entity can keep borrowing and hope that things will turn out well in the end.
Government is no exception. It is true that it has more leeway, because it can freely print money with which to paper over its obligations for a time. But this does not solve the problem. It only postpones the inevitable and makes the eventual day of reckoning all the more painful. A good look at The Path to Prosperity makes it distressingly obvious that Congressman Ryan has no intention of taking meaningful steps to address the government’s fiscal plight.
Some may find this assessment of Paul Ryan’s proposal too harsh or unfair. It is not. Consider these facts.
On page three of The Path to Prosperity Congressman Ryan boasts that his plan will cut “$6.2 trillion in government spending over the next decade compared to the President’s budget.” The $6.2 trillion figure may seem like an impressive amount, and so it is when viewed in absolute terms. But if you know that Obama’s proposed spending was some $46 trillion over that ten-year period, your prospective is bound to change dramatically. The figure only represents 13 percent of the overall amount.
Furthermore, to call these reductions cuts is disingenuous. There is only one overall budget cut in the whole ten-year period, and it is a small one at that. It occurs in the next fiscal year when government spending will decrease by less than $100 billion, which is less than 3 percent of the total budget. Thereafter, government and debt will grow in their usual merry way. When all is said and done, there are hardly any real cuts in Ryan’s plan. All it does is to slow down the projected rate of growth by relatively modest amounts.
Ryan’s timidity in cutting is due to his fear that the public would not tolerate serious slashing. He is right. The problem is that we cannot cut the budget, because we the people will not allow it. We blame the politicians, but it is actually we who are ultimately responsible. Any politician who proposes serious cuts almost invariably gets voted out. We agree in the abstract that the budget needs to be reduced, but we reject the practical implementation of this idea. It is a bad situation.
The Path to Prosperity, regrettably, probably is more harmful than most proposals of this kind. This is because it is cast in language that creates an impression that it tackles the problem while all it really does is only to further exacerbate it.
Sad to say, Paul Ryan’s document is misnamed. Instead of The Path to Prosperity, it should be called The Continued Path to Fiscal Doom.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 8:43amMy first thought about your comment is; ok is there a better plan out there? The answer is no. Ryan is the only one that has put out ANY proposal that actually cuts spending. Yes it will take a long time to bring the budget into balance and for many reasons. We have lost millions of jobs over the past three years and we have expanded the government so large it is more than just scary. Yet through it all obama wants to spend even more next year and the dems even more. 6.2 trillion amounts to spit in a bucket compared to the amount of spending obama and the dems have done in the past 3 years but if you look at the problem it started around 2006 when the dems won the congress and senate. So now we have the dems in the senate blocking ANY try at lowering our spending. You can blame the republicans or dems it really does not matter what matters is that we start cutting and do it NOW. Shutting down the government sounds like a great place to start to me. We will see how many millions of jobs in the government sector are not important and from there we can really see how to fire all those union workers.

Posted on April 7, 2011 at 6:55amThe entire problem stems from 2 things: 1. They (mainly the dems in the Senate) are soooooo worried about their political career, they don’t want to risk angering the base in 2012. & 2. So many politicians today (both parties) are so entrenched in the socialist mantra they do believe it‘s governement’s responsibility to take care of everything. I was watching the fox stream of the House Budget Committee yesterday (Paul Ryan’s attempt to address the FY 2012 budget) & I thought my head was going to blow up. I heard the dems say time & time again that it was the government’s responsibility for this or that & the cuts were “unfair”…they kept bringing up the class warfare argument about the rich bankers & oil companies. I suggest everyone watch a few of these hearings to see what representatives/senators say during these meetings/debates….the media doesn’t cover it & it’s the best way to see what they really think & who is really willing to work together to get something done to fix the mess the progressives have made over the past 100 yrs.
