Washington Post Editorial Says Santorum Should Be Disqualified as Presidential Contender

Washington Post OpEd Says Rick Santorum Should Be Disqualified From Race

AP

“That Mr. Santorum believes he has the standing to declaim on the rightness of Mr. Obama’s faith, and whether it is sufficiently Bible-based, is in itself disqualifying.”

That is a line from Monday’s Washington Post editorial column blasting GOP presidential contender Rick Santorum, asserting the candidate should be disqualified from the race for his views on contraception, abortion, and the mere mention of President Obama’s faith.

From the article:

The “war” on Catholics that Mr. Santorum imagines stems most recently from President Obama’s proposal, since withdrawn, that Catholic hospitals and universities (though not churches) be required to include contraception in the health insurance plans they buy for their employees. We opposed Mr. Obama’s policy, arguing that the administration should give more leeway to religious-affiliated institutions, even ones that hire many non-Catholics and operate primarily in a secular sphere. But we also acknowledged the difficulty of balancing their religious liberty against the personal liberty of hundreds of thousands of female employees who might hold different religious views.

It’s that unending, challenging balancing process for which Mr. Santorum seems to have insufficient respect. He has said, for example, that contraception is “one of the things I will talk about that no president has talked about. . . . It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”

If all he wanted to do was talk, we would say, Have at it — no matter how misguided we think he is on birth control and many other matters. But does Mr. Santorum really understand the difference between talking about a policy and imposing his views?

Perhaps the editorial board of the Washington Post should ask the Obama administration the same question about “imposing views,” given its recent push to impose its view that religious employers should cover the cost of contraception for its employees.

Gingrich is right on this one, today he called Santorum a ‘BIG LABOR REPUBLICAN.’ He has always sided with the unions. He fought for them to collect minimum wage 6 times, he has fought against right to work.

Romney is the only one to take on the unions. Look at his fight in Massachusetts with the Teachers Union, State Worker’s Union, etc. After he left Massachusetts he took on the UAW during the bailout. Now they are attacking him, take a look from this weekend: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/feb/uaw_attacks_romney.html

ROMNEY IS THE ONLY ONE TO TAKE ON THE UNIONS. AND HE HAS A PLAN TO TAKE THEM ON AS PRESIDENT.

The women working for Catholic hospitals still have the “freedom” to use contraception. Nobody is standing in the way of that freedom. Those women just don’t have the right to demand that their employer pay for it. It is shameful the way the Post is framing this argument.

Having said that, Santorum is an idiot for talking like he wants to impose the Catholic position on contraception on everyone. That would be like Romney saying it would be a good idea to outlaw smoking because he doesn’t believe in doing it.

Yeah it is funny that people start listening to Soros when he starts making claims like that.

If Soros statement was true, why has he donated millions to defeat Romney? Why is MoveOn.org, his group, spending hundreds of thousands on ads in Michigan against Romney?

Becuase he used that as a talking point for Romney’s opponents, funny that they take them, hook line and sinker. For example here is one of those ads they put out Saturday: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/feb/moveon_romney_bailout.html

I remember the Washington Post writing something Similar about Reagan. I have a feeling we are going to really a Santorum Presidency – it will defiantly be much better than what we have now – maybe we can get back on the track Healing America.

The first day Reagan took office – he got rid of those hideous Chrysler Limo’s and replaced them with Cadillacs. Then he told Gorbachev that there was a new Sheriff in town. Over night America pride started to grow again.

      Good old Flip Flop Mitt!

      http://articles.boston.com/2012-02-18/news/31075328_1_andrea-saul-mitt-romney-quinn-bill

The program, known as the Quinn bill, was under attack at the time by many taxpayer groups after a 2001 Board of Higher Education study called it an ineffective “cash cow’’ for police.

But when Romney was running for governor in 2002, he was steadfast in his support of the program. As a candidate, he showed up to the office of the Boston Police Superior Officers Federation and asked for the union’s endorsement, said Thomas Nolan, a retired lieutenant who was then vice president of the federation. “There was a firm understanding that the quid pro quo would be his agreeing to allow our Quinn bill benefits to remain intact,’’ he said. “We felt assured that once he was elected, our benefits would be intact for four years and guess what? We got what we wanted.’’

      http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/02/21/romney-reverses-course-praises-important-role-of-labor-unions/

Hoping to make up lost ground in Michigan, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday reversed course and praised labor unions.

At a town hall campaign event in Shelby Township, the candidate told supporters that “labor unions play an important role in our society.”

      FREEDOMLUVER,

You are right on that one, Romney always stood by the police. That is true, he fought for better benefits for the police because they weren’t given anything for years and were suffering. What it doesn’t say are the bills that he denied them to get to the Quinn bill. The others he took on and shut down were because they were too costly.

But when it came to the Teachers union, he took them on, even offered them larger pay for the removal of Tenure and the removal of bad teachers. He put in test to track their effectiveness and brought in Charter Schools which the Teachers Unions tried to shut down. Here is an article from 2003 of Romney taking on Big Labor, 1 year into his administration: http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2003/12/16/romney_aide_says_unions_too_powerful/

      FREEDOMLUVER,

Plus, Romney never reversed his stance on unions, he has always spoken that unions have some good traits, such as teaching their members. This is what his statement was really about, listen to the clip you listed. He has a section about unions in his book. How there is some good in them but they have been corrupted by their leaders. Look at the article you listed by Raw Story, he said it right there about the corruption of the power of unions.

So thanks for proving my point.

You and I certainly don’t see Romney in the same light, but I do appreciate the way you always seem to remain civil when responding to questionable positions he has taken.

No matter how you try to present it…Romney was still pandering to the Police union for support, and here’s a little gem where he praises another union.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tm0VOQqrHz0
      Romney Praises Unions, IBEW

      http://www.ibew.org/articles/12Daily/1202/120224_Romney.htm
Just as the games were starting, in a speech before a crowd that included IBEW International President Edwin D. Hill, Romney said:

“We thought it was going to take three weekends with 20 people. Instead it took 20 weekends with several hundred people. And the work was done by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. They worked up there, they put on the snow shoes, they treaded up there to help us.”

He went on to thank Salt Lake City Locals 57 and 354 – and President Hill – for all their hard work.
      ———–

As I see it, Romney is more than willing to pander to an audience when it suits his purpose, and there’s a very good reason why he earned the title “flip flop Mitt”.

If it was only his position on Unions and maybe even Romneycare that I took issue with, I could support him, however with his endorsement of the NDAA and other laws that trash the Bill of Rights…he went into unforgivable territory as far as I’m concerned.

Do not fall into the trap the liberal media is setting for you. Trust me they want Santorum. They will continue to do hit pieces on him, which will rally GOP people who can be lead like sheep. Its the same principle behind the idea of us attacking Iran. What has all the war talk done for Iran, their people have quit trying to rebel and have rallied together against a common enemy (US).

Quit worrying about who Obama says sorry too, or what Obama says about contraception. These are distracting issues being used to divided the GOP on the real issues.

    DEBT
    SPENDING
    WAR
    FREEDOMS

If we keep the issues on those four things and elect a candidate that can beat Obama on those issues and not agree with him its a easy victory for the GOP. If instead we play the game the media is wanting us to play and try and elect a candidate that is no different from Obama on the real issues, the GOP will get its ass handed to it like it did with Mcain.

People its time to wake up. What does your candidate have planned to cut the debt, spending, overseas wars, and our freedoms? If he is not on the opposite side of Obama on those issues you are supporting the wrong guy!!!

You are so right. We who are conservatives watch the parties fighting within and each other just have to laugh. The conservative message is so much stronger then these petty ideological issues that the media throws out to get these dunderheads talking about. These issues need to be answered using the Constitution. I think philosophy is more dead then conservatism. Without a philosophy you cannot adhere to an ideology like conservatism. If one believed in the philosophy of freedom then all these little issues are not worth discussing because we would all know the government of free people would leave us to make either good or bad decisions on our own.

He’s not going to try to legislate or use Presidentil Directives to do any such thing. He has never said so directly or implied. All he is saying is the path we have taken in the last 30+ years has done us more harm than good. He isn’t saying the nation has to conform to his values. Basicly it has been an instrument in the hand of the real threat, politically active liberals, who will use whatever means necessary to bring about total restrictive social change of our beloved United States of America. Birth conrol, the entire “it’s only sex…relax” , the abortion industry…..these things have all been a tool used by the left to defeat us first on a moral on a moral level. The abortion industry is one of the big tools they have for funding. They are making their enemy pay for their own defeat…hopefully they won’t have to fire a shot. You point out Rick has said “path we have taken in the last 30+ years has done us more harm than good”. Well in that case you shouldn’t vote for Rick. He supported every piece of legislation from Bush. Bush has been blamed for all of the problems we face today by Obama (he deserves his fair share). Rick has been part of the problem and Obama will hammer that with a billion dollars worth of ads. He has no shot verse Obama.

Can Santorum say he is on the opposite side on never ending un-Constitutional wars? No, Rick is for more wars.

Can he say Obama is spending to much? No. Rick has been always for more spending.

Can he say he is better on the debt than Obama? No, Rick’s plan increases our debt.

Can Rick attack Obama on Obama’s assault on our freedoms? Nope, Rick’s record has shown he is for more government control.

Point in on the main issues, Rick is the same as Obama.

Rick Santorum: A Massively Expanded Welfare State is ‘The Genuine Conservatism our Founders Envisioned’

“What was my vision? I came to the uncomfortable realization that conservatives were not only reluctant to spend government dollars on the poor, they hadn’t even thought much about what might work better. I often describe my conservative colleagues during this time as simply ‘cheap liberals.’ My own economically modest personal background and my faith had taught me to care for those who are less fortunate, but I too had not yet given much thought to the proper role of government in this mission.

I suspect some will dismiss my ideas as just an extended version of ‘compassionate conservatism.’ Some will reject what I have said as a kind of ‘Big Government Conservatism.’ Some will say that what I’ve tried to argue isn’t conservatism at all. But I believe what I’ve been presenting is the genuine conservatism our Founders envisioned. One that fosters the opportunity for all Americans to live as we are called to live, in selfless families that contribute to the general welfare, the common good.”

Now tell us, does this sound more like Jefferson…or Marx?

Santorum is one of the best ever at getting legislation passed that he sponsored. This is what you call weak. Compare his record to Ron Paul, who has only had one bill become law that he sponsored. I am not sure that Obama has ever sponsored a bill that became law.

First, to have a theocracy in America, the Constitution must be replaced with a totalitarian dictator who speaks on God’s behalf (i.e., a revival of “the Divine Right of Kings” doctrine). I challenge you, or anyone else to identify which part of the “Religious Right” is calling for such a government.

Second, the “Religious Right” leaders (Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Jim Dobson, et. al) are calling for an increased respect for the Constitution and its actual wording, urging citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. The real “crime” of these leaders is not that they want a theocracy (which they don’t) but that they rightfully want legislators to make national policy instead of judges. Should that occur, AU or groups like them could not win another battle, for Americans overwhelmingly reject their policies (e.g., “under God” in the Pledge – a phrase opposed by AU but supported by 87% of Americans).

The rabid opposition to public religious expressions is often irrational, In fact, a New Jersey bill proposing that students begin each day by reciting the first 56 words from the Declaration of Independence was loudly denounced as “a thinly-veiled attempt to put prayer in schools” – the first step on the road to a – you guessed it – “theocracy!” Reading the actual wording of the Declaration of Independence leads to a theocracy??? It is time for that term to become anathema in public discourse.

(cont) During the Civil Rights Era, we gradually learned that if certain pejoratives were invoked, the individual doing so was a racist. Similarly, today we need to learn that when the emotive and pejorative term “theocracy!” is invoked, it is usually by an intolerant secularist who wants all public religious expressions expunged from society.

I am smart enough to know that when the power shifts we have a “new” speaker of God’s word, I could be a Muslim by the time anyone regained control. Call Santorum what he really is thiough…a Facist. I dont want him anywhere near the bully pulpit. He would most definately legislate his beliefs. I dont care if he want s to pray, preach or read Bible stories. I just dont want and laws relating to my religion or ay other!

…and yet they fear him so much that they’re trying to get him cicked out of the race.

      Hmm…

Well- you seem to favor one of the three remaining candidates, the lunatic who said we shouldn;t have been in either WWI or WWI (even if invaded), who can’t manage a newsletter but wants to manage the US, and whose squeaky rat fink little voice whines “Have you read their own words on why they attacked us?” while igoring the fact that Bin-Laden said they attacked us because we weren’t a muslim nation (not the PR “they’re bombing our women, children and apsarin factories” spin they put out for the Blame America First Western Media).

Or you like one of the other two (which are so close they’re really one) that have supported state-run medicine, been for-against-for-and-against infanticide, who believe in global warming, and who have recently called themselves Progressives.

I realize that last one is a little odd for someone supporting Santorum to say, being that in the early ‘90’s, he said he was a Progressive himself, but who are you more comfortable with, a guy who said he was Progressive a long time ago before any of us knew how insidious Progressivism was, or two people who have, much more recently, called themselves A. a Progressive moderate to get elected governor of MA, or B. a Real Politik Wilsonian, both less than 10 years ago?

      I know where I sit.

While I have been looking at Santorum’s political beliefs, by the time the primary gets to NC, the GOP race will be over, so my vote and all the other North Carolinian voters won‘t be worth the weight of a single straw and Santorum’s back will be broken.

The “deal” between the Paul campaign and Romney is a falsehood created by the GOP to try and push Dr. Paul to not run 3rd party. The Paul campaign has come and said its not true. 30 years in office the man hasnt cut deals, why would he do one now. Rand doesnt need his dad’s help to get any type of nomination.

Look Rush, Mark, Glenn, Sean, and Bill are all anti Paul. If they were true to what they say they believe then they would be supporting Ron Paul and this nomination process would be over. Ron Paul is the only candidate that can offer a real contrast in opinions to Obama.

Romney will be doom in this election because of Romneycare and not getting the Ron Paul supporters.

Gingrich will be doomed in this election because honestly people see him as a hypocrite and windbag. He also wont get the Ron Paul supporters.

Santorum will be crushed by Obama because he never voted against anything Bush wanted. Obama will hammer him on this saying ” Santorum is Bush Jr.”. He also will not get the Ron Paul supporters.

There is only one shot for the GOP this year. Its Ron Paul. A lot of you will say “but his foreign policy” . I dont care. I am willing to risk the chance of Iran getting an nuke over the certainty of economic collapse and the end of the United States as we know it. Oh, and Israel will take care of a Iranian nuke site, they dont need us.

Nobody, neither church nor any small business, should be REQUIRED under penalty of law to support, provide or engage in providing for abortion. So what if religious institutions are exempt, the rest of us, small business owners or large companies, will still be required to support the mass murder of innocents. If the readership has gone down so much, advertising dollars must be wasted on both papers. Put ad money elsewhere and perhaps it will help your business. Personally, I try to avoid any company that supports Obama and/or progressives – including Progressive Insurance, Starbucks and 99.9% of Hollywood.
