Watch a 260 MPH Crash From Inside the Race Car

Here’s the description from the video:

During the October 2010 Bonneville World Finals, Danny Thompson (driver of the world’s fastest mustang) lifted off of the salt at approximately 264.7 MPH. Insufficient downforce sent the car flipping end over end into the air. It traveled over eleven hundred feet before touching down again and continuing to tumble. Danny suffered no injuries, nor did his iPhone 4, which was tucked into the front of his uniform. It was a testament to safety equipment and the astounding work performed by the crew at Hajek Racing.

Fast-forward to about 1:45:

Does anyone know if Danny Thompson is any relation to Mickey Thompson?

Just think if the government built that car. We’d be picking up pieces of the driver. Thank God for Capitalism which drives R&D.

Been in a roll over accident (multiple rolls after being hit by a semi driver not paying attention). My new Celica GT sport was completely destroyed. I was almost completely destroyed. Wish I had the padding he did. Lucky.

I think this is fake, watch the clouds through the windshield they don’t move much till the crash starts.

This is a straight line race, going for speed. No laps, no circles so the clouds won’t move much until the vehicle starts to go… well wonky.

That is one “flippin’ Ford”. Wish my mustang would hold together that well. I can’t even keep an alternator in it.

You would think that someone that will drive a car 260 mph would learn to shift a little better!!!

I was thinking the same thing. However. this is not a drag race. Looking out the window should make it pretty clear that this is probably at the Bonneville salt flats. It is obvious to anyone who is into land speed record racing that this is not fake. The safety requirements for such attempts are such, that you are really pretty safe in most crashes at these speeds. Ever see dragsters crash at almost 300mph and the drivers walk away? Safety is paramount and has come a long way since the 1950s.

at 240 MPH?? That was all the damage?? Watch the end of this segment again see the car.. The shell wasn’t damaged hardly at all.. This had to have been some test for new body design. A car that can take speed and power and can take an impact like that is incredible to say the least..

I come from a racing family and actually my brother in law’s first reaction was to laugh when he was in a bad accident he enjoyed the excitement of them. I was in an accident with him when he wasn’t racing in his dodge truck and it totaled the car that pulled right in front of him and he was almost rolling on the ground laughing so hard it scared the you know what out of me and the other guy.

Safety fault herein – Notice that the visor opens unassisted. Lots of debris airborne. He needs a new helmet mfr.

I noticed the opposite. He started with the visor open then between 2:02 and 2:04 it closes. Appears he reached up with right hand and hit it closed in the blink of an eye.

Look at the slomo. At 2:38 it pops open and at 2:52 another impact shuts it.

It’s amazing how little he moved inside the car as it was going through the crash. Unbelievable! While it would be nice if we as normal highway drivers could be THIS safe, I’d sure hate to have to be geared up like that everytime I went somewhere.
