Beck Uses Drum in Fiery Defense of Freedom & Attack on Obama‘s Quest for ’Power’

As we reported this morning, there was a portion of President Obama’s State of the Union address that really struck a chord with Glenn Beck. The section, which focused upon the president’s quest for more executive capacity, led Beck to passionately discuss freedom and responsibility on his radio show this morning.

“Let me translate: he means the executive branch,” Beck said of the president’s proposals. “He is alerting people now ‘we need more power in the executive branch and I’m going to consolidate power in my branch.’”

After urging Americans not to support the move, Beck passionately delivered portions of Thomas Paine’s “The Crisis” that were written on the head of a drum. Here’s the first portion that he read:
“THESE are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.”
“You‘re talking about man’s freedom,” Beck said after sharing the selection. “Is there anything that should — if heaven affixes the prices of things — is there anything that should be more costly than freedom? Is there anything more valuable than your right to be free? I don’t think so.”
He went on to say that the fight for freedom and against tyranny is going to be both tough and discouraging. But he encouraged listeners to take an active roll in the process, rather than shrinking away or ignoring the situation.
“It’s not something that we can just pray about and then it will just happen,” Beck proclaimed. “This is going to be hard and it’s going to be up to us.”
He went on to read more of Paine’s address, telling listeners about how General George Washington once used the same words to inspire his troops on the banks of the Delaware. These motivational statements helped rally the colonial troops who were battling the most powerful army in the world at the time.
Here are some of the other lines Beck shared with listeners:
The far and the near, the home counties and the back, the rich and the poor, will suffer or rejoice alike. The heart that feels not now is dead; the blood of his children will curse his cowardice, who shrinks back at a time when a little might have saved the whole, and made them happy. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.

“You might get discouraged. You might look at the candidates on the stage and say ‘I don’t like any of them,’” he continued. “You might listen to the state of the Union address. You might get into spring and see Occupy Wall Street start to happen again…and you might get discouraged and say…‘I can’t do anything.’”
Despite these feelings and the associated challenges ahead, Beck told the audience, “Don’t throw the burden of the day on God. Show your faith by your works and God will bless you.”
He encouraged listeners to confront the challenges head-on. Everyone, he explained, would be impacted.
“It doesn’t matter where you live. It doesn‘t matter if you work at a gas station or you’re the governor of a state — the evil or the blessing will reach each and every one of us,” Beck said. ”Rich or poor, we will all suffer or rejoice together.”

Liberals have generally worked to add to citizen’s freedom by doing such things as working for the vote for women, direct election of Senators, doing away with Poll Taxes and Poll Tests. Republicans tend to favor a strong Executive Branch. His protege, Dick Cheney was a huge advocate for the Unitary Executive Theory, and so was Sarah Palin, called out on it during the VP debate by Joe Biden, but she probably didn’t understand the theory. Obama has gotten places by compromising with Conservative elements.

Noone acts unless they feel it affects them personally, and human nature is to obtain a status quo. Paine is right in that nothing easily gained is ever cherished. When you are born into freedom and the lessons of the trials, tribulations, and successes of our founders aren’t taught, you guarantee the usurpation of tyranny with it’s feet firmly planted in our sedentary complacency. Too many of us choose to speak and give our opinion. I say that opinion without action is the worst form of cowardice. How many will lambaste the current administration from the comfort of their home or in the presence of the like minded, but fail to lift a single finger. I call you lazy cowards and liars. If you truly believed what you say, you would place liberty and government in their rightful order. With the former at all times above the later. All of you who choose to vomit up what you think, but fail to act in accordance, you, not the government, are the problem. The government has become powerful because you have chosen to be silent and comfortable when faced with an opposing point of view. The monster of government only grows when it’s given power on which to fatten itself. We have willingly untied the purse strings and allow it to free feed. We turn a blind eye and in the process have tripped and bruised our heel. Do you get back up or wallow?

We’re all on the side of liberty and freedom. I apologize if I was perceived as harsh. It’s better to meet on the battlefield of ideas, waging intellectual wars, with civil discourse and truth as our weapons. I truly believe that if we start talking ideas instead of opinions we can come up with great solutions. The internet is a great place to do that. I didn‘t mean to infer that being on the internet isn’t a form of activism, but instead meant to say that there should always be a purpose. My grandfather used to say that “..there are a whole lot of people that talk alot and don’t say much”. I try to avoid surrounding myself with those people.
I think that we are squandering a rare opportunity to meet and discuss ideas on “the blaze”. Never in the history of man, have we had a place to meet, talk, agree, and disagree. Somehow it always winds up with people calling each other names. I think it’s because we try to make converts instead of debating the merits of our ideas, their strengths, and their shortcomings. But, that’s just my opinion. =o)

Again, I apologize if I was little harsh. I think the important thing is to make sure that our elected officials are being kept honest. We need to push for legislation that demands that there be a record of everyone that each congressman meets with. There needs to be a website where the money that each representative receives is posted and easy to find. The power to increase or decrease the wages of federal employees (read: legislative/executive/judicial), and taxes by congress should be voted on by the people during the general election every four years. Every law that congress votes on should be posted on the internet in layman terms 72 to 96 hours in advance of the vote. These are a few ideas that we can try to get through to our congressmen.
The single most important thing you can do though is get involved on the local level. Government is trickle up. Empower the cities, then the counties, then the states, and then the country will follow. If you turn that pyramid over, then the power starts from few and is disseminated to the many, instead of from the many up to the few.
