Angle, Reid Face Off in Nevada Senate Debate

LAS VEGAS – In a crackling campaign debate, Republican challenger Sharron Angle attacked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday night as a career politician who lives in a Washington condominium and has voted to raise taxes 300 times. The four-term veteran called his party-backed rival extreme and accused her of distorting his record.
“I have never voted for tax breaks for people who are here illegally,” he said, rebutting one of the allegations Angle has made in their close, caustic and costly campaign for the Senate.
Angle played the aggressor from the opening moments of the hour-long debate, an event that produced a stream of disagreements on the economy, health care, immigration and more.
Reid took aim at Angle‘s statement that it’s not the job of a senator to create jobs. “What she’s talking about is extreme,” he said.
“Harry Reid, it’s not your job to create jobs,” she replied sharply. “It’s your job to create policy” that leads to the creation of jobs.”
With their debate, Reid and his challenger shared a local stage and a national spotlight, the only joint appearance of a campaign pitting the embodiment of the Democratic establishment against a challenger who was little known outside Nevada before winning the nomination in an upset.
For Angle, a 61-year-old former state lawmaker, the encounter was a chance to counter Reid’s months-long attack on her as an extremist who is bent on destroying Social Security and other government programs.
For Reid, 70 and seeking a fifth Senate term, it marked an opportunity to persuade skeptical constituents that he deserves re-election at a time when unemployment in Nevada, at 14.4 percent, is the highest in the country.
The debate unfolded at a particularly critical moment in their race, with early voting set to begin over the weekend and polls showing an extremely tight contest.
Both candidates unveiled new television attack ads in the hours leading up to the debate.
Previewing her attack in the debate’s opening moments, Angle’s commercial Reid, saying he has voted to raise taxes more than 300 times.
Reid’s ad called Angle a “wild” legislator who would force pregnant rape victims to give birth and dismantle Social Security.
Former President Bill Clinton campaigned with Reid earlier in the week and urged voters not to take their anger over the economy out on the four-term senator.
But Angle jolted Democrats in the state and in Washington when her campaign announced it had raised $14 million in the three months ending Sept. 30, a staggering sum that reflects her rise to prominence as the Republican challenger to the Senate’s top Democrat.
Democrats responded by noting that Angle had not disclosed how much of the money she had remaining in her campaign treasury, suggesting she had already spent most of what she reported raising. But at the same time, Reid rushed out a fundraising appeal that said Angle‘s surge in donations meant she might be able to swamp him on television in the campaign’s final days.
The antagonism between the two sides has also spilled over into the streets.
Police said they had issued summonses to two men after an Angle supporter dressed in a sheep costume taunted one of Reid‘s backers during Clinton’s appearance.

Posted on October 15, 2010 at 4:58amHow can she “destroy” Social Security and other government programs that are already on deaths door? I prefer see the dismantling of a lock on the life boats. We need to get off this sinking ship called the nanny state before it pulls us all down with it Harry. Just because you do not see that your stern is about to go skyward and your keel is about to snap in half, does not mean all the passengers and crew want to maintain full speed ahead. If you need a visual Harry, just watch the movie Titanic, and substitute the ship for the country, and you may start to understand. Liberalism/Progressivism/Socialism/Marxism/Communism has hit the proverbial iceberg and the ship on which it sails is sinking. Will you take a life boat or die trying to keep a lost cause floating? There are still seats available on the lifeboats, but you have to get on board yourself.

Posted on October 15, 2010 at 3:10amFinished watching the debate on the CSPAN website. Angle won the debate. Just how hypocritical is Reid when he calls Angle extremist for her view, that she won’t be creating jobs, but will vote for policies that encourage job creation, and he then names policies that he voted for that created jobs in Nevada. What an idiot!

Has anyone been following the race for governor here in California? It’s become so nasty – it sickens me. Jerry Brown has attack ads blaming Meg Whitman for everything under the sun!
I know why they are attacking conservatives – we remind them of their failures. Jerry Brown ran Oakland into the ground…and now he wants us to reward him with governorship? Say NO WAY this Nov. California!

Posted on October 14, 2010 at 11:32pmI LOVE the fact that MSNBC is so stupid that they would rather cover the O’Donnell debate (even though she is behind by 19 points) than the Reid/Angle debate where Angle could unseat the majority leader.
But then again “witches” are so much more amusing to their viewers than real constitutional arguments, aren’t they?
I DO have a message for the TeaPartiers, though. Coons in Delaware is a formidable opponent, and O’Donnell is not. YOU defeated a SURE-THING Republican victory to elect O’Donnell in the primary. I respect your principles – but if you put the bearded Marxist in the Senate by selecting O’Donnell to run that was not smart, Tea Party. Please do NOT make the same mistake again. I do not care if she is closer your ideals, it doesn’t mean squat when Coons wins.
By the way – if you supported her in the primaray, but you have not contributed to her campaign, then put your money where your mouth is or don’t vote. These elections are too important for us to be giving up SURE-THING senate seats. If you supported her then, support her now. (if not, that just shows you walk away when the going gets tough, and who needs that?)

I don’t live in her state, but I am mad that it appears all those people who voted for her are not sending the money that is and was needed to support her. It takes a great deal of money to win these contest and believe me, it was and is beholden upon those that vote for her in the primary to support her, if you did send money SEND MORE NOW if you didn’t get up and do it now.
I don’t want this Marxist Coons in there cause he will effect my future and my kids and their kids. Get her the help she needs. You put her there…

Posted on October 15, 2010 at 3:21amSometimes you have to make sacrifices for principles. O’Donnell is the better candidate than Castel or Cooons. She may lose, but either of the alternatives does not represent what we the people want for our country. We must stand behind our principles or we all become something like a RINO and play the appeaser. AND WHERE HAS THAT GOTTEN US IN LAST UMPTEEN YEARS.

Opinions massively wrong – one thinks of his declaration that the Iraq war was lost and that the surge would not succeed as an absolutely clearcut massive error. The actual real Angle you see in the debate (as opposed to the imaginary Angle of Reid’s ads and imagination) is thoughtful, articulate and grounded in the real world. Posted on October 15, 2010 at 7:55amSince you recognize dimwit and incapable, then you have probably noticed those traits in Obama, the Community Organizer. He managed to get himself elected with those traits and a competent teleprompter from which he read the slick lines that someone else wrote for him. I am not from Nevada, but I will agree that it is a great state and deserves to have someone represent it who cares more about the people and the problems than pushing Obama’s destructive policies. And, by the way, just because someone writes something derogatory doesn’t mean the are Tea Party or Glenn Beck followers – this is open forum. Hopefully one day you will study past history and see where this administration is taking you, your children and grandchildren (assuming you have or will have some) and you will realize most of us have the best interest of the Republic at heart. God bless.

Posted on October 15, 2010 at 8:27pmPlease do not compare Obama to Sharon Angle. I do study history and you do not have to look too far (like just 10 years ago) to prove that the talking points, that Sharon Angle espouses, have caused this country to near extinction. I thank God that Obama is our President and I pray to God that more can be done to help the poor, create single payer medical care, better racial equality, and to give every single person in this country equal opportunity to a good education. For the sake of my children, yes I do have children, I hope and pray that candidates like Sharon Angle are not elected next month. Yes you are correct this is an open forum, however it is not that much of a stretch to assume that alcarfl believes in Tea Party beliefs and listens and agrees with Glenn Beck.

Harry Reid should have gone after her for lying and getting the facts wrong. Just as the levels of unemployment are fairly consistant of 9.5% and underemployment of some 18%.
Do you think Mr Reid has finally begun to believe that the illusion of Las Vegas is actually reality?
