Parallels Between Batman Film and the Shooting

Click here for The Blaze’s comprehensive coverage of the Colorado theater tragedy.
In “The Dark Knight Rises,” a masked villain leads a murderous crew into a packed football stadium and wages an attack involving guns and explosives. It’s just one of the more haunting scenes in what was one of the most anticipated movies in years.
There is no confirmed evidence so far that the motives of the assailant in the Aurora, Colo., killings on Friday had any specific link to “The Dark Knight Rises.” New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said he was told the gunman had painted his hair red and called himself the Joker, but Aurora police would not confirm that.
It’s not clear why the shooter chose to enter the movie theater at 12:30 a.m., not far into the midnight screening that marked the film’s opening day. Several survivors remarked on their initial confusion as the attack unfolded at seeing a masked figure silhouetted in a gaseous haze and the sounds of real gunshots mingling with the film soundtrack.
In superhero movies, violent attacks on the public by villains are key components of many plots, including “The Avengers” and “The Amazing Spider-man,” both in theaters now. By Hollywood standards, the Batman movies are more grim than bloody. The Christopher Nolan-directed “Dark Knight” trilogy has been more dark than that of typical superhero films, taking a cue from the comic book series published by DC Comics, including “Detective Comics” and writer Frank Miller’s gritty 1986 take on the character, “Batman: The Dark Knight.”
There are general parallels to the Colorado shooting, “The Dark Knight” and the comic book character:
— Bruce Wayne’s drive to become Batman arose from witnessing the deaths of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, at the hands of small-time criminal Joe Chill, who shot and killed them after they had left a theater.
— A part of the Batman video game called “Arkham City” takes place in an abandoned movie theater (The Monarch, outside of which Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed).
— In the “Dark Knight” graphic novel by Miller, the Joker slaughters the audience of a television talk show with gas.
— In the same book, a beleaguered man shoots up a porn theater after being fired from his job, killing three people with a handgun.
— “The Dark Knight Rises” features at least two scenes where unsuspecting people are attacked in a public venue: the stock exchange and a football stadium.

Posted on July 21, 2012 at 9:22amOkay, lets get some facts straight here. First off, (I’m hearing this everywhere) He didn’t use an automatic weapon. He did not use an assault rifle either. He used a semi-auto AR-15. It looks scary but it‘s working parts are no different than any other ’one pull one shot’ rifle. According to eyewitness testimony a person heard a cell phone ring, saw a guy answer, get up and go to the EE. He then RETURNED to his seat. It was after this the gunman entered. He did NOT kick in the door as they open out and are made of steel set in concrete block filled with cement (husband has built these) You couldn’t even kick the door in the right direction and get it to open. They guy had equipment that is next to impossible for civilians (non-military/police) to obtain, right down to groin, leg & neck protection, ballistic helmet, SWAT tactical gear etc. He has sophisticated, multiple booby-traps in his home that the B Squad says will day DAYS to figure out.
Another witness says they were in #8 and when they tried to leave someone shouted “DON’T GO IN THE LOBBY! HE’S GOT A GUN!” so they went to the balcony instead. (Multiple shooters? being as this guy never left the theater until he left by the same way he came in.
Then they guy calmly surrenders to police? TELLS them about the traps in his apartment? Really??? Warning police so they don’t get hurt… Something doesn’t smell right here. False Flag!

Posted on July 21, 2012 at 8:55amDuring the 1970′s there was a rash of hijacking airliners to Cuba. Archie Bunker (“All In The Family”) had a line where he suggested this be stopped by handing out pistols to each passenger as they boarded the plane – as soon as the hijacker stood up he’d be outgunned. It was meant to show how ignorant Conservatives are – but ironically pointed to a greater truth: a well-armed society is a polite society.

Posted on July 21, 2012 at 6:37amOK, we’re starting to put the pieces together. Holmes bought a ticket, had a seat close to the emergency exit door. About 30 minutes into the movie, he leaves his seat and leaves via the E E door. Problem one: The E E door isn’t an “alarm will sound door?” Is it, or is it not? If not, this will be good folder for those planing law suits for death or injury. If it is an “alarm will sound” door, then Holmes figured out a way to disarm the alarm.
Problem two: Holmes left through the E E door, which most are supposed to be self-locking. Even when I was a kid in the olden days, they were self-locking, so if you wanted to sneak in, you had to have a friend on the inside to get you in. Holmes could have easily defeated the self-locking of the E E door, by placing a small object so that it wouldn’t completely close, or using duct tape so that the lock wouldn’t engage.
In my mind, the most important question is: Was this an “alarm will sound” door or not? If not, why not? If it was, was the alarm not working, or broken, or did Holmes find a way to disarm it?
After this tragedy, the new building codes will REQUIRE that all movie theaters have “Alarm Will Sound” emergency exit doors, along with requirements that they can not be easily disabled.

Posted on July 21, 2012 at 10:55amThis is what I thought when I read he propped open an emergency exit, why no alarm? you mentioned, he could have disabled it, I didn’t think of that, I would suspect there are ways of making alarms foolproof, if the emergency exit door would have alarmed, he would have been foiled, possibly preventing some of the carnage he wreaked. Every public venue should have EE doors refitted, or double checked to make sure alarms are in order, and cannot be defeated. We are in a free country, and as such, risks exist, but we can do our best to lower the risk level.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 11:57pmWhat if he had used a bomb instead of an automatic weapon? Those who choose to break the law by killing are not going to be inhibited by laws that only make it more difficult to obtain firearms.
We already see how poor a job our government does with enforcing illegal drug laws in America, so really do we believe criminals still won’t have access to illegal firearms?
The problem in Colorado is no one has been carrying a weapon to fire back at the assailants who have chosen to murder innocent people. Does no one in Colorado believe their life is worth defending?
When criminals have to fear retaliation from those they wish to shoot at they may be less hesitant to think they will walk away from these types of incidents uninjured.
Do we ban the violence in movies because it desensitizes the American Public. It has become obvious that he was more influenced by the movie than by owning weapons. He began purchasing the weapons after the release of the trailer. My argument is in a civil case more liability would fall on the movie makers and their influence over this man, than the influence of owning weapons. The movie gave him the notion to do the crime, not the weapons.

There probably were police that wanted to save people but were not allowed to. The police cant protect us so that is why we need to be able to carry armed as responsible citizens. Because statism lulls everyone into a sense of security by sucking massive amounts of tax money off of us to put toward “Homeland Security”, people think they can then forego the need for doing their own security. Well, I’m here to tell you: it doesn’t work like that. You are responsible for your own safety. Can anyone guess how different this would have been had I been in that theatre? I’d have been in the back. I would have instructed everyone around me to get down and cover their ears, 10mm muzzle blast is bad. Then I‘d say a quick prayer and hope my bullets find their target and if they didn’t, they’d find inanimate objects and not innocent bystanders. Anyone want to guess how you take a guy down thats wearing a tac vest? Its easier than you think. Taking down a bad guy in a crowded theatre is no easy task, however, 37 years of tactical pistol experience would give me an edge. If you consider how the word shell is used in every other context, something hollow that contains or once contained something else, it would make more sense to say that the casing is the shell instead of using the word shell to refer to the whole thing. Calling the casing a shell casing is like calling a shipping crate a carton box.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 9:55pmBanning something just because it can be used by mentally unstable people to cause injury, is just plain stupid. There is really no polite way to put it.
Lets ban aspirin because a mentally unstable person can overdose on them.
Lets ban spray paint — that would completely eliminate the scourge of graffiti.
Lets ban sports cars because, really, who needs to go 200 MPH (on their own private property) anyway, and a mentally unstable person or incompetent driver can kill lots of people by driving them into a crowd.
Lets ban airplanes to prevent terrorists from knocking over skyscrapers and important government buildings.
Lets ban prepaid cell phones, because we all know that’s how terrorists communicate with each other, right?
Every one of these items have perfectly legitimate uses, and so do guns. Saying “The only reason for those types of weapons is to mow people down” is irresponsible. I have no issue with psychological testing for purchasing any kind of gun; that is responsible. But it sounds like, at least in this case, Mr Holmes only recently started showing signs of mental instability, and he legally purchased these guns. Gun laws would not have prevented this wacko from obtaining guns.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 9:42pmEven if they were armed, the gunman was very well protected with ballistic armor. Shooting at him would only illicit return fire from a superior weapon without any protection for the one intervening. That 71 year old with the .38 would not have had the same results with this guy as he did with those punk kids a few days ago.
The only option for subduing him would have been for a few guys to rush him and restrain him physically.
They were sitting ducks in there.
What a horror.

Do you really think this idiot would have done this in a room full of armed people? Your “victim-hood” is showing, dumba$$.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 9:45pm“many rushing him might have lessened the bloodshed” That is what they have been teaching school administrators to do in case of a shooting.
I don’t have a problem with people packing guns. The first armed person that arrived at the Gabby Gifford‘s shooting didn’t pull out his gun cause he didn’t want to be mistaken for the gunman.

Or, it could have been very much like the church shooting, where an off duty police officer was able to shoot the shooter. I have a Conceal Carry, I can tell you the first thing in a situation like that is take the shooter out. You can monday morning QB it to death, or just wait for him to run out of ammo and end up with 12 dead and 71 shot.
Just as in Chicago, total gun bans work great for the criminals, they feel really safe when commiting crimes.
And as anyone who wants to call out for gun bans, He bought them legally, and when you look at the number of guns owned and sold in the US, what percentage of those who LEGALLY own a gun commit a crime? We don’t need anymore laws, how many laws did he break this morning? No amount of laws can keep a kook from commiting a crime.
Let’s just pray for the victoms and their families.
So far this summer has sucked for Colorado, I went up to the Academy yesterday, you can see the devestation, and now this. Why couldn’t this California piece of crap stay in San Diego, or at least commit the crime back there.

Had somebody been armed with a good 9mm, .40 cal, or .45 cal loaded with Federal Hydra-Shok Plus P Plus and knew what he was doing, could have at least put him off his guard or even knocked him down at a close range so that he could have been rushed. Granted, being in a panicked crowd can make it difficult.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 10:16pmGVBLAZE, I would suggest holstering the weapon before the cops arrive. There have been off duty cops who have taken charge of a robbery in progress then shot by arriving patrols that saw his weapon before they recognized him. If you have to maintain a weapon on a dangerous perp, get on the cell to 911 and quickly explain what has happened and describe every thread of clothing that you are wearing and that you are holding weapon. Then hang on with the operator until the cops do arrive and take over the situation.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 10:24pmDARMOK AND JALAD AT TANAGRA, I hear you on that having seen the results of a .45 impact a number of times. Carried one on duty for many years. Had a nice series .80 Colt Combat Elite tricked out with a number of items from Wilson Combat. That was stolen a number of years ago. Got to get another someday. I carry a SIG P226 usually with a 20 round mag, unless I have it under my clothes, then go with a couple of MecGar 17 round mags. The wife has a Glock 17, both stay loaded with the Hydra Shoks that I mentioned. Those will leave a walloping impact on body armor too. But others have to act quickly to stop the perp after those impacts.

If you want something that is very compact, a great shooter, and won’t break the bank, I got a Taurus P145. 10 rounds, very compact, I carry mine in the small of my back no problem, a buddy has the Colt Defender .45, a little more expensive, but very compact. Both models are very accurate, at 10 yards I can put all 10 rounds into a 50 cent piece in under 15 seconds. Practice, practice, practice.
I still believe a well armed society is a polite society.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 10:53pmDARMOK AND JALAD AT TANAGRA, Gotta agree with you the practice. And practice with the rounds that you carry daily. I’m retired Army, and a former city cop. I’ve fired expert from the first time I picked up a .45 in Army training. have to credit dear old Dad for that, God rest his soul. Not being a small guy I can easily conceal the SIG. Concealed the 1911 a lot too with no problem. When I was on the civilian dept I was issued another SIG, so my SIG was my back up. Kept a mag bag in the center of the seat with a load of those 17 round mags, several of the original SIG 15 round mags, and two SIG 20 round mags in the six outer pouches. Several boxes of ammo and a cleaning kit in the center main pouch. With even the remotest chance of any of these crazy things happening anywhere it is best to be prepared. Kept a dept 870 in the vehicle too.

The only way to disable lunatics like this is to aggressively attack them like an animal.
Hand to hand. Disarm. Neutralize
