Bomb Squad Disarms Shooter’s Booby-Trapped Apartment in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (AP) — Authorities on Saturday began disarming trip wires and explosive devices “set up to kill” inside the apartment of the suspect in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting, hoping to find clues to his motive without destroying key evidence in a blast.

Federal authorities detonated one small explosive and disarmed another inside James Holmes’ suburban Denver apartment, but several other explosive devices remained, said Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson.

Makeshift memorials sprang up for the 12 victims, including a U.S. navy sailor, an aspiring sportscaster and a man celebrating his 27th birthday, after police grimly went door to door with a list of those killed in the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history. Holmes, 24, was arrested early Friday outside the Aurora theater after witnesses say he unleashed gunfire and gas canisters on a crowd of moviegoers watching the midnight showing of the new Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

On Saturday, law enforcement officials began trying to disarm up to 30 devices in Holmes’ booby-trapped apartment, and set off a small explosion to detonate one device.

The devices were “set up to kill that person and that could have been a police officer executing a search warrant,” Carlson said. Police planned an intricate procedure to disarm the possible weapons without destroying evidence that could be in the apartment.

“We don’t want to lose evidential value,” Carlson said.

Federal officials said in a bulletin obtained by The Associated Press that they still hadn’t determined a motive for the suspect as families grieved and others waited at hospitals, where seven of the wounded remained in critical condition on Saturday with some injuries that could be permanent.

In his Saturday radio address, President Barack Obama urged Americans to pray “for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover

The victims included 23-year-old Micayla Medek, said Anita Busch, the cousin of Medek’s father. The family took the news hard, but knowing her fate after waiting without word brought them some peace, Busch said.

“I hope this evil act, that this evil man doesn‘t shake people’s faith in God,” she said.

Besides Medek, relatives confirmed that Alex Sullivan and Jessica Ghawi were among those killed, Sullivan on his 27th birthday.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the last two months. He also recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The suspect’s stellar academic record, apparent shy demeanor and lack of a criminal background made the attack even more difficult to fathom.

It also wasn’t known why the suspect chose a movie theater to stage the assault, or whether he intended some twisted, symbolic link to the film’s violent scenes.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. The plot has the villain Bane facing Bale’s Caped Crusader with a nuclear weapon that could destroy all of fictional Gotham.

The Dark Knight Rises” earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings, and, according to industry estimates, roughly $75-77 million on the day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second highest opening weekend ever, following “The Avengers.”

Warner Bros. has announced it would forgo the usual revenue reports until Monday out of respect for the victims. Sony, Disney and Universal also said they would delay reporting box office receipts until Monday, a day later than the routine Sunday releases for Hollywood.

In New York City, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said: “It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He has his hair painted red. He said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman.”

Oates would not confirm that information, but did say he spoke to Kelly. Asked whether Holmes had makeup to look like the Joker, Oates said: “That to my knowledge is not true.”

Near the entrance to the theater’s parking lot, a makeshift memorial of 12 candles sat in a row alongside piles of flowers. Up the hill from the theater, about 20 pastors led a vigil for 350 people, some hugging and crying. A sign read, “7/20. Gone Not Forgotten.”

An emotional Gov. John Hickenlooper said earlier Friday that people would not be defined by the tragedy.

“We are clear that we are going to rise back and lift ourselves above this,” he said.

A federal law enforcement official said Holmes bought a ticket to the movie, went into the theater as part of the crowd and propped open an exit door as the movie was playing. The suspect then donned protective ballistic gear and opened fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Authorities said Holmes shot scores of people, picking off victims who tried to flee. At least one person was struck in an adjacent theater by gunfire that went through the wall. Adding to the terror and chaos were two gas canisters thrown by the suspect that filled the theater with smoke.

Tanner Coon, a 17-year-old Aurora resident who was watching the film with two friends, said he first thought the gunshots were firecrackers. When he realized what was happening, he ducked between seats and waited for the shooter to bark demands.

“When is he going to start telling us what to do? When is this going to become a hostage situation?” Coon said.

When the firing ended, Coon said he started running up the row but slipped in blood and fell on a woman who was lying on the ground. He tried shaking her, he said, but she didn’t respond, so he left her behind and ran from the theater.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others. It was the deadliest in Colorado since the 1999 attack at Columbine High School, where two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves.

Holmes had enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver, though he left last month for unknown reasons. In academic achievement, “he was at the top of the top,” recalled Timothy P. White, chancellor at the University of California, Riverside, where Holmes earned his undergraduate degree before attending the Denver school.

Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban San Diego neighborhood. Holmes played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college.

Police released a statement from his family Friday that said, “Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved.”

Yesterday one of the many articles I read said some of the other apartment dwellers were allowed to return to their apartments. If the Holmes apartment is still booby-trapped, then why put those who were allowed to return at risk? Also, I rest assured that Holmes did not begin and complete his sophisticated booby-trapping immediately before leaving his apartment to go to the theater. To be able to set up all the explosives etc., he needed possibly days or weeks to complete the job. How did he protect himself while in his apartment? If the entrance to his apartment was booby-trapped, how did he exit to go to the theater? With all the equipment, guns etc. he loaded in his car, it surprises me that a neighbor did not take notice of his activity and report him. Or perhaps was there someone else “holding” the equipment until he arrived to pick it up? Where was he when he donned the vest and protective covering he wore? If Security was in fact stationed at the theater, and Holmes “dressed” in the parking lot, would he have not been noticed? Also, in most cases there is a buzzer that sounds on emergency exit only doors. Why not in this theater? How did Holmes learn in just a few weeks how to master-mind his fiasco? He was intelligent, but he was a Medical student, the school did not teach explosives in the classes he took. Who programmed Holmes?

Re dressing in the parking lot: I‘m given to understand that it’s a somewhat common practice for hard-core fans to attend favorite movies dressed as one of the characters. So donning Batman-like armor/attire in the parking lot would pass relatively unnoticed/unremarked except as “another of those nutty fans”.

There’s a new thing called the internet, you don’t have to be a genius to find recipes for all kinds of nasty improvised explosives. Who says he ever had the weapons and gear in the apartment, could have been kept in the trunk of his car. Just because he set the bombs up doesn’t mean they were armed or connected to the trip wires until he armed them on the way out.For what it’s worth the apartment was probably rigged to be a diversion to draw first responders away from the theater. He used a timer to start blaring techno music to draw a noise complaint and take out the first person in the door. The neighbor who went to the apartment saw the bombs and backed out.He had a degree in pharmaceuticals and obviously a grasp of chemistry to build binary explosives.Trying to write in an agenda or a second perp isn’t supported by any evidence. There is just an extremely intelligent person who reacted to academic and social failure with a vicious and obsessive desire to make society “pay” for his imagined wrongs.

Go back and look at what Hennard wrote and what he did at the Luby’s in Killeen.Holmes is brighter but if you scratch the surface you will find a dysfunctional social loser.

I think he intended to kill other apartment dwellers not policemen. If a neighbor came to his door to complain about the loud music and found the door slightly open he hoped that person would try to go inside. This would have triggered the booby traps and killed almost everyone in the building. This would have caused a huge response of fire fighters and law enforcement personnel. This would have reduced the number of police available to respond when he started his despicable shooting rampage.

I want to know how long before the left wing media starts making reports about everyone who caused this poor kid to have to resort to shooting people, as obviously he isn’t responsible for his own actions.
Look at Columbine, how they portrayed Klebold and Harris as poor misunderstood outcasts who were bullied in school. When someone actually researched them it was proven that it was all lies. They were not unpopular, did not belong to their own gang, were not outcasts they were not members of the trench coat mafia, they did NOT target specific people to shoot. Yet the media persists on telling the lies about them

But wait, it’s coming, someone will want to take away all the blame for this killer too and the lies will remain.

Every broadcast I‘ve seen regarding the explosives in this guy’s apartment (including the Police Chief’s comment) suggest he rigged his apartment to hurt first responders who would be coming after the shooting.

Considering what he was carrying on his body and in his car at the theater, I have a very different scenario that seems more logical. He rigged music to spontaneously go off at midnight and turn off automatically at one. It was loud and would have naturally annoyed those who lived near him. A woman who lived below him actually did go to his apartment and knocked on the door, wanting to ask him to quiet down. When she knocked, the door opened a little and she almost pushed it open to call out to him, but decided against it.

Think of this — IF she had gone ahead and opened that door, literally all hell would have broke loose. The amount of explosives in that apartment would have created a huge fireball that almost assuredly would have blown up several of the nearby apartments. The ensuing phone calls would have brought every available piece of emergency equipment within miles to that location within minutes.

The shooter planned to have all emergency personnel too busy to come to the theater, thus allowing him to continue his shooting rampage for a good long while. Unfortunately, his rifle jammed and thwarted his plans.

That scenario makes a lot more sense to me, considering the timeline of when the music started versus when the movie and shooti

“Who supplied the unemployed Holmes with all those weapons, ammunition, military gear and bomb materials?”
America, and especially the victims and their families, deserve to know exactly who paid for all those items Holmes had.

So ABC dropped extensive coverage? Humm- Could it be because they have either 1) found no compelling reason to maintain coverage (ie. They have found no connections with Holms and the Tea Party, right-wing extremism, ect) or 2) they have found connections with Occupy Wall street, envirowackos, liberal causes, homosexual activism etc, in which case they will drop him like a hot potato with only minimal obligatory coverage (we already know he is a registered Democrat, which is enough to cool most networks jets). Of course this is taking for granted that the actual tragedy itself is not enough of itself to justify coverage for the MSM except to temporarily bump ratings with out being able to connect it to some democrat narative/agenda. Let them make a right-wing connection, and you will see this story instantantly fanned to white-hot, wall-to-wall coverage. The faster Holms drop as a person of interest to the MSM, the more suspicious I become.

But why did the theater not have some security in place for such a big event? They are there on the weekends. Surely this was as big a crowd as weekends.

The cops got there so fast because the main headquarters and jail is a block away and there is a substation across the street.

As for why there wasn’t more security there…its not a bad neighborhood…the cops that are normally there are there to keep the wanna be gangsters from sneaking into the movies. They catch about 10-20 a week trying to do so. They aren’t really there because things like this happen there…they are there to stop theft.

I did notice that the media did say that authorities were searching the research lab at the school where Holmes “worked.” Did he do his school work there, or did he have a job inside the research lab where he earned extra money? Also, did his parents pay for his day to day existence expenses or did they send him more money than he may have needed? Naturally, we do not yet know. Also, as intelligent as Holmes was reported to be, was he earning extra funds by performing underhanded deeds in a criminal way? We will likely not know until authorities can gain access to his apartment to hopefully find any manifestos, records, receipts, and a computer or computers. But, only time will tell.

I would love to be on this team. I need a job really bad and would be willing to work on dismantling explosives. First of all they should take this monster to his own apt and make him dismantle the bomb. Why are we so crazy about doing things like this? If he blew himself up, it would save the tax payers billions of dollars in attorney fees and court fees, food, clothing, and housing this blood sucker.

I had the same thought .. these nut cases like to show how smart they are … then again I think if I lived in one of the surrounding apartments I might not be so keen on letting him have the chance to blow it up along with everything I own. But it is a shame we are going to waste so much money on this murdering pos .. no one doubts he did it … he should get a quick trial and an even faster execution .. sadly it will go on for years and years.

CATB, Holmes will never be executed. If anything he will likely be institutionalized for a lengthy period, if not the remainder of his life. As we have often heard, there is a fine line between being highly intelligent and insanity. My feeling is that he will be either found ‘not guilty’ on the grounds of insanity, or a judge will declare him too insane to stand trial. In my view, to release him any time in the future would be a criminal sentence upon mankind at large. But, if it did happen, it would not be the first. They are after all flirting with the eventual release of John Hinkley Jr. And, no JZS. I am not that concerned that he shot our favorite modern day president on the right, but his reasoning for doing it. Truly insane and no telling what he will do for an encore.

Absolutely agree… send him in to his own apartment, let him set off or try to dismantle all the booby traps. Why should our law enforcement guys knowingly be put at risk?

I think he should be waterboarded until he tells us who funded and trained him.

I am guessing he had a credit card. Now days you do not need a job to get a credit card.
