Candidates Take Aim at Obama in First GOP Primary Debate

Fox News has some details:

The five participants in the first Republican debate of the 2012 presidential race Thursday night are looking to prove themselves to be more than the party’s B-team, as they try to catapult their White House bids into the national spotlight.

Fox News and the South Carolina Republican Party are sponsoring the debate, which will feature former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former New Mexico Gov. Gary John and businessman Herman Cain.

Here’s more on how the debate shook down:

Republican presidential hopefuls came out swinging in their first debate Thursday night, attacking President Obama’s foreign policy despite his leadership in ordering an operation that killed Usama bin Laden this week.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty congratulated Obama for capturing the world’s most wanted terrorist nearly 10 years after the Sept. 11 attacks.

“I tip my cap to him in that moment,” he said. “But that moment is not the sum total of America’s foreign policy. He‘s made a number of other decisions relating to our security here and around the world that I don’t agree with.”

Pawlenty cited Libya as one example, saying he didn‘t agree with Obama’s decision to defer to the United Nations on how to deal with Muammar Qaddafi’s violent crackdown on rebels.

“If he says Qaddafi must go, he needs to maintain the option to make Qaddafi go and he didn’t do that,” he said.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said the only thing Obama has done right in his foreign policy is continue President George W. Bush’s policies.

“The decision he made with Usama bin Laden was a tactical decision,” he said. “It wasn’t a strategic decision. The strategic decision was made by President Bush to go after him. What President Obama has done on his watch, the issues that have come up while he’s been president, he’s gotten it wrong strategically every single time.”

Pawlenty and Santorum were among the five participants seeking to prove themselves to be more than the party’s B-team as they try to catapult their White House bids into the national spotlight.

Obama is an arrogant JOKE that is way out of his element and way to full of himself to even notice. He is good at playing up to the masses of leeches sucking this country dry. Breeds nothing but victims. Give, give, give and tax those who work to support those who WON’T, welfare, housing, food, $$ all for free, no wonder a lot of the lower class like him soo much, because that can’t do a damn thing for themselves, given more oppurtunities than anywhere else in the world and they still cry victim. Don’t go after the American Dream or Obama will tax you for it!!!

Really? So how many black guys have you voted for? I guess you voted for Obama, which makes you a little dumb. How many black guys have youy voted for? I guess you now prefer the superior white guys like Clinton, Kerry, Gore, Mondale and, let’s not forget, Carter.

Maybe you need to vote on substance and not color. 98% of blacks voted on the basis of color and had no clue what Obama stood for and 88% would do it again even though that community is at its highest unemployment rate. I didn‘t vote for Obama because I didn’t agree with his policies and knew what his ideology was, but I will vote for Allen West, first, and also Herman Cain. I agree with their ideas and agree with their vision for America. I do not care about their color! And, yes, make note I am a tea partier and will say no matter what the lame stream media says 99% of tea partiers I have met feel the same way!

Yah, as if the way we’ve been fighting it has made us safer…Sorry, but nobody tries to blow the Swiss up. Why is that? Could it be the fine chocolates? Somehow I don’t think so, somehow I think people do not try to blow them up because they don‘t have a bad habit of interfering in other sovereign Nation’s affairs.
Ron Paul has it right, you want to fight a war? Then do it the right way, declare it against an actual enemy, then fight the damned thing to win. But this idea of perpetual war, well that‘s part of why we’re going broke. Anyone with any sense of honesty will say that. We have spent over a trillion on the “war on terror”, and what has it gotten us? About as much as the so called “war on drugs”.
So tired of the big government progressive types, including the ones that tell us they are Constitutionalists when in fact they aren’t, telling us we need perpetual war.

The reason why no one tries to blow up the Swiss is because that’s where every billionaire keeps his/her money! Also, the Swiss have NOTHING to offer via resources or stategic position, and to invade them would be meaningless.

But how do you explain Kuwait? They kept to themselves for some time….but Hussein invaded them because they “stole his oil”.

@Hucksqr – No one tries to blow the Swiss up because they’re not a superpower. They don’t stand for anything. No one looks to them for leadership. Their money isn’t the reserve currency.
However I do agree with Paul on many issues. I think we should fight wars to win and I don’t believe in perpetual wars. At some point, our troops should come home. I don’t wanna build roads and schools for ppl who hate us. But I dunno about legalizing all drugs, prostitution, and gay marriage.

I like Ron Paul’s position on the Fed, and on state’s rights, but everything else he falls way, way short. He comes across as fanatical to me.

Ron Paul didn’t show you anything new. You know where he stands on everything, and he is more interested in catering to the crowd than he is about actually doing something to fix the country. He makes a lot of good points but he is not serious about contending.

Herman Cain is very serious, and I think he has the best plan.

Romny, Newt, Palin, Bach, et al…they are politicians and I am a little sick of them.

Herman Cain wins simply because he tales some of the Black vote.

topic 1 ……….abortion where does choice start, and where does consequence begin?
i think you are unable to tell the difference

topic 2………no one has ever or ever will force you to be or not to be a Christian. Becoming a Christian is a personal choice, period, and being so, can not be forced on you . your understanding of this matter is lacking, much like the first topic

topic 3 …….the government should have nothing to do with marriage. period. the only two reasons you lefties cry about marraige is 1 ) marriage tax allowance, and 2) its a conservative/ bedrock concept, which makes you want to change it

there is no reason for any type of tax exemption……….everyone should be taxed the same, thus it would remove that reason

I usually don’t respond to trolls – but what have you been smoking? You have the right to remain agnostic/atheist: there are Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindi, atheists, and many more. No one is persucated (with the possible Christian exception) in this country. NOW, a woman ‘decides’ to become a parent when engaging in a sexual act. You want to relieve these poor, indecisive women from their ‘burden’. You, like all progressives, must want to divorce actions from consequences. Cain has my vote at this point. RP too old too wacky just shot down enhanced interrogations when we have seen they have in fact work(god help him if any of his competitors challenges him on his 9/11 inside job garbage that he goes on Alex Jones about), Pawlenty & Santorum talking like politicians (we have had enough of their kind) John?! where did this guy come from no chance what so ever.

Herman’s responses seem too much like practiced platitudes, and Ron Paul, God love him, has the fed nailed, but some of his ideas are too far out in left field.

Ron Paul has a good fiscal understanding and should be part of the Cain administration should he win. I’d like to see all of them as part of a Cain / West or West / Cain administration.

I wish they had more time to answer the questions put to them.

I didn‘t like Ron Paul’s answer about prostitution and drugs but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because that was in no way a 30 second or even a 2 minute answerable question.

Unfortunately Pawlenty, Cain, Santorum, Huck, Mitt, Palin, Gingrich will all continue the Neo-Cons policies of intervention in foreign sovereign affairs where we have no place or interests.

Yep, here’s the Republican field. Take your pick. It’s hard to decide because the platform of each candidate is the same: if Obama is favor of it, they’re against it. The favorite will be decided by who can slam Obama the most effectively.

I don’t want to sell these guys short. They are principled and do have values. They are for small government and less taxes and common sense conservatism. All of them. They all agree on the same platitudes. So how do you decide between them?

We need to demand to know the “team” we are voting for. Obamamania won, and then he brought in his marxist, communist, socialist team. Who would these people like to bring to Washington? We need to be able to judge these men by their associates. Very good men are coming out of the woodwork on the right. Not all can be President, but there is potential for a very strong team to lead us through these next years.

Don‘t let the campaign be just about one man’s character or charisma. Demand to know who will be in the White House every day, and demand that Obama explain his choices of people who now have power over our lives.

      Breakdown.

Herman Cain won the debate hands down. Concise, to the point and is a leader.

Rick Santorum, intelligent, moral and pretty dang likeable.

Ron Paul, his standard and consistent self. Knowledgeable about the economy, mistaken about national defense. He should think about one of my ideas about privatizing our military and make any country that wants us to help them, they pay. He must have never read my ideas I sent to him.

Tim Pawlenty, the cap and trade is going to be his downfall, otherwise I like him.

Gary Johnson, he broke Reagan’s 11th commandment and denigrated Sarah Palin, sorry he just lost in his first primetime showing. Did you hear the crowd’s gasp? Oh yeah he is DONE.

Herman Cain won the debate…according to WHO?

He ALREADY LOST the debate by stating the Federal Reserve doesn’t need to be audited.

He is trying to CATCH UP to Ron Paul and his message.

What poll says Herman Cain won the debate?

Frank Luntz’s spontaneous polling of his HAND PICKED focus group?

      PUHLEASE.

What do you take me for…a fool?

Neocon Warmongers call Ron Paul “Mistaken” about “Defense” when the fact is, you just like to stick your self-righteous nose in other folks business, that is NOT in our interest.

Defense means securing our borders so the BOOGEYMAN Al Qaeda doesn’t waltz in, not spreading our troops thin worldwide while we’re BROKE and nation building, over 700 bases worldwide.

Sarah Palin is a progressive, Johnson was right about her, and she isn’t even running.

I’d vote for Johnson and Paul over ALL THOSE LAME ESTABLISHMENT CANDIDATES, AND THE ONE FEDERAL RESERVE CANDIDATE-HERMAN CAIN.

They think we’re stupid…Pawlenty has been lingering like a bad smell ever since he first stepped on the scene, morphing and transforming like a chameleon to appease whoever his audience happens to be at the time.

Ron Paul is a true Constitutional Republican. Today’s Republicans or Neo-Con War Mongers would have been booed off any Republican platform 20 years ago; however, with the 24/7 propaganda of FOX news you now believe that these War Mongers for Israel are legitimate Republicans. Well they are not. The American people demand no more War for Israel or Jews.

BTW, I just took the poll and it is not rigged. You can’t even see how many voted just a percentage.

I was really surprised to see Luntz group aftewards think that Cain won the debate.. I thought Pawlenty did the best acutally but he certainly had his share of softball questions.

OK folks, looks like establishment is forcing another puppet on us. To all, before you will support any candidate look closely at his past. Herman Cain speaks with nice deep voice, but like obama no specifics, “we need jobs..bla. bla bla…”. I have been watching Ron Paul for some time, and I like him. He never turn around on his word. We have take lessons from the past, to avoid future mistakes. Can we make government like is written in Constitution Article 1 Section 8?

We can get back to Article 1 Section8, through the 10th Amendment.

      Nullification.

Ron Paul will take us there. He strongly supports state’s rights, as you heard in the debate last night.

      The 10th Amendment Nullification Movement
“If the federal government has the exclusive right to judge the extent of its own powers, warned the Kentucky and Virginia resolutions’ authors (Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, respectively), it will continue to grow – regardless of elections, the separation of powers, and other much-touted limits on government power.”

Wrong. I use only one IP address and both polls allowed me to add my votes over and over. Nice try.
Ron Paul did NOT win this debate, just like he can’t win POTUS. Not trying to cause a problem, it’s just the truth.

Why’s that? Because he’s black? What’s he got to offer in the way of viable experience when it comes to the ways of congress, the economy, and foreign policy? Is it just because he can talk a good game? Haven’t you learned a lesson yet about smooth talkers.

      Silence, Dave.

I‘ll make sure you’re stuck with Obamanation for 4 more years. Try me.

“Shock” CNN Poll: Ron Paul Has Best Chance Of Beating Obama

“Who does best against Obama? Paul. The congressman from Texas, who also ran as a libertarian candidate for president in 1988 and who is well liked by many in the tea party movement, trails the president by only seven points (52 to 45 percent) in a hypothetical general election showdown. Huckabee trails by eight points, with Romney down 11 points to Obama,” reports CNN.

      Shut up Dave.

@ thepatriotdave You have a dozen post and I have not read one positive comment, why is that? Is it because only your opinion counts, are you “WINNING”
      .
The people support Ron Paul whether you want to except it or not & so far Ron Paul has the best chance of beating Obama, I don’t see anybody else stepping up to the challenge!

Yeah man, all those polls are so dishonest representing the dangerous libertarian!

Is that as dishonest as Fox’s poll of undecided voters who want Cain?

Furthermore, you seem to think libertarianism is “dangerous”, can you please explain how?

The only thing I see dangerous, is central planning.

      http://vortexeffect.net/2011/05/05/poll-who-do-you-think-won-the-fox-news-republican-debate/#comments

Poll: Go vote for Cain, after you do reload the page, and try and vote again, it will SEEM like you can vote twice, but then, use your reading skills, and notice at the top it saying “Sorry you have already voted once”.

THEN if your still concerned, it shows the number of votes, try and vote again and see if Cain goes up a second time, it wont.
