U.S. Hands Over Libya ‘No-Fly Zone’ Command to NATO

BRUSSELS (AP) – After days of hard bargaining among its members, NATO agreed late Thursday to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya – but not other military operations there.
The agreement will allow the United States to hand over command and control of part of the international operation, as it has been eager to do. But it appeared that some NATO members balked at any involvement in attacks on targets on the ground.
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who announced the NATO agreement in Brussels, said the alliance operation would proceed in parallel with the bombing campaign carried out by coalition aircraft. NATO officials said they expected to begin operations within 72 hours.
“At this moment there will still be a coalition operation and a NATO operation,” Fogh Rasmussen said. “We are considering whether NATO should take on the broader responsibility in accordance with the U.N. Security Council resolution, but that decision has not been reached yet.”
U.S. warplanes will continue flying strike missions over Libya, the Pentagon said earlier Thursday.
NATO’S top decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council, had been struggling for six days to reach an agreement on using its military command and control capability to coordinate the operation in Libya. The logjam appeared to have broken earlier Thursday when Turkey, which had sought assurances that the NATO operation would be limited, finally gave its assent. The alliance needs the approval of all 28 members to take such action.
Turkey’s parliament authorized the government to participate in military operations in Libya, including the no-fly zone. Turkey is NATO’s only Muslim member.
Before the approval of the mission, hundreds of people, including members of left-wing political parties, protested against the deployment outside Turkey’s Parliament as well as the U.S. Embassy, where protesters chanted slogans against NATO and Stavridis’ visit.
Separately, the 27 European Union heads of government, also in Brussels for a summit, issued a statement saying the EU stood ready to assist in building a new Libya “in cooperation with the United Nations, the Arab League, the African Union and others.”
In Rome, Italy‘s parliament approved the country’s involvement in Libya with back-to-back votes in both houses. The lower Chamber of Deputies gave its approval on Thursday, a day after the Senate.
Italy has offered the coalition attacking military targets in Libya the use of seven military bases for its aircraft. It has also made available eight of its own jets for use in missions. But it has been pushing for NATO to take over command of the operation.

He said since the old USSR is gone, NATO should have been disbanded. The reason NATO was created was to counter the old Warsaw Pact. Some of which ,I think is now part of the EU or itching to join.
So, why is NATO still alive and costing US “munny” that we have to borrow from the Chinee Commie.
There is no reason for NATO to exist. Buchanan said we are defending an area that has a bigger population (EU)and are now richer than US.
Let the Brits take care of themselves, the Germans take care of themselves and so on. France corporates w/ NATO but is not a member.
Now the Poseur Marxist Moslem is putting American forces under foreign command.

Ok Get to it. Brung it On Oh yeah, the A-rabble League. They asked the West to help them to assist in their no-fly efforts.in Libya.
Soetoro and the Euros does not speak A-rabble too well. They thought they were being asked to help the A-rabble coalition military planes by send a few extra jets to help them in their efforts to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya.
The trouble w/ the translation was the A-rabble spokesman saying “Yes, the A-rabbles wanted the West to help Libya get rid of flies and establish a zone where no fly was allowed.
Can you believe this. Now we are in a waa because of a damn fly.
This CIC(commie in charge) has got to go ASAP.
Do you think he’s gonna go? Or is he here for life?

Posted on March 24, 2011 at 8:59pmI am surprised it was turned over. It is my belief obama is a member of the muslim brotherhood. They are taking over the middle east. And gadaffi has fought them back so our great president who wouldnt intervene for genocide is now stepping in to help his brothers. The so called civilains getting killed are attacking the military over there as in revolution. Just surprising there are so many revolutions in a row. Like domino`s they fall. I may be wrong but i think not. We need gadaffi to be in charge over there or they will soon becoming here. And obama will hand over the keys to the nation. 9-11 was a decoy for the real plan of getting one of thier own in power here in the usa and the people are blind to this fact. We call him muslim they call us racist. This isn`t about racism its about pretecting our constitution that obama has sought to piss all over. I will vote for hillary beofre i will ever vote for the terrorist in office.

A servant does not care who gets credit but will do what needs to be done because he/she sees a need and will fill it. Posted on March 24, 2011 at 7:06pmI said this on another post, but Glenn Beck pushed home what appears to be the real reason this entire thing is happening. The U.N. says this is a humanitarian mission for Libya, protecting innocent civilians from slaughter, etc. On the other hand, you have Hamas pushing Israel to launch a full scale attack against the poor defenseless Palestinians. If that happens, NATO then sends all its forces to Israel to protect those Palestinians. If you watched his show today, I’m sure you would have gotten a better description.

Posted on March 24, 2011 at 8:00pmfunny how they tell us the US is backing out, yet we make up the majority of NATO assets that will be used until this ends… and it could be years with such a muddled, incoherent strategy in place.
Gadhafi has very little to fear at this point from rag-tag rebels. He’s got billions of dollars to pay mercenaries, and has plenty of firepower to hold out as long as he wants to. Just wait until he starts killing civilians at a faster pace through indesciminant bombing (bomb civilian areas, and blame all the deaths on NATO strikes)…. NATO will be forced to send in troops, and that means US boots on the ground and blood in the sand. I hope I’m wrong, but I can see this getting out of hand very quickly with no real leadership, and US commanders sitting on the sidelines.

Posted on March 24, 2011 at 11:19pmWhat I see on this website is some random insults, but no opinions. I think you need help.
- Is the United States doing the right thing? Should we be offering humanitarian and military help to Libyans or not?
- The US took total control of this effort from day 1, and is now transferring the burden to other countries. Does that make sense? Are we ceding world leadership to the French?
- Should the US never step in when people of a country are being slaughtered?
What I see on this website is serious flakiness. Glenn is being coy and taking both sides at the same time, as is Gingrich. Palin isn’t tweeting, and won’t until she figures out which way the wind is blowing. The other Republican nominees are silent.
Blazers, take a stand! What do you believe?!
I know that you have to object to anything President Obama does, but is there any wiggle room for thinking he might be doing the right thing but say he’s doing everything wrong?

I see a simple solution to 90%+ of the foolishness we are witnessing in this country. We need to require all public servants to submit to a drug and alcohol testing program. Since our government administrators, representatives and court justices are clearly in “safety-sensitive” positions, it is only fitting that we put them through pre-employment drug screening and random testing. These people would certainly have to pee in a cup after this “reasonable suspicion” episode.
