Obama Speaks at Memorial for Tucson Shooting Victims

A transcript of President Obama’s prepared remarks for the Tucson memorial service available here.

Update: Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ office released the following statement Wednesday evening:

“The outpouring of support from the people of Arizona and Americans across the country has been truly moving.  We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  The resolution before the House today was a further reflection of the best of America — one after another, Members came to the floor, without party labels, in support of those impacted by this tragedy. They honored the fallen, those recovering, and the heroes who responded quickly to save lives.

“The efforts of the Congresswoman’s colleagues have not stopped there — starting with Speaker Boehner and Leader Pelosi, staff and Members from both sides of the aisle have reached out in words and deeds to help our office in our time of need. Even during the darkest times, our nation’s capacity for kindness and fellowship reminds us of the best in people.  To everyone who has expressed well wishes, we offer our most heartfelt thanks.”

I was just saying to my boyfriend that this is supposed to be a memorial service. This looks like a campaign rally or something. Funny, I thought a memorial service would have a more somber tone. Guess Im living in the past.

What a wonderful ceremony. The city of Tucson dictated the ceremony, it is not for us to judge what kind of ceremony or memorial it was suppose to be.

Just reading some of the post already I love the fact that the Mexican Americans speaking tonight is driving you racist Tea Partiers crazy.

Daniel Rodriguez spoke so eloquently, Sarah Palin should take lessons but she’s so stupid the thinks this tragedy is all about her.

If you actually watched, you would see they were cheering the fact that Rep Gifford opened her eyes for the first time since the tragedy. Maybe it’s about time you did also. They were also celebrating the unarmed heros who stepped up despite the danger. Thousands of people showed up so I think they were O.K. with the service. I didn’t see people leave in “disgust”. People mourn differently. To criticise how people react to tragedy is what’s disgusting.

      Okay TX,

If it was a Republican shot in the head, innocents killed at a Republican political outreach event…

How would YOU set up the memorial service? Would you even have a memorial service? Would you claim that it was right-wing hate speech that incited the tragedy?

I am completely serious. Don’t claim to be above partisanship when you are not.
Are some people in here partisan? Yes. Are some people in here truly offended or dismayed regarding a “memorial service” that has cheering and clapping and the trimmings of an event not conducive to a “memorial” service? Absolutely.

You and your kind are nothing more than petty creatures, forever critical of those you do not agree with, demonize those that hold a different opinion and finally close your mind and heart to world beyond your paranoid beliefs. No, what his ancestors “where” has nothing to do with it, nobody has a problem with his race, they have a problem with him delivering a Native American (pagan) blessing at a memorial service for people not a one of whom practiced his religion.

      Pay attention, will you?

“What I don’t get is how cold and heartless Beck fans are.”

Typical left-wing ad hominem, and a very ballsy one at that, given that your people (with the exception of the Pres., good for him) have done nothing but try to score political points over this.

Nit-picking over the First Lady’s attire may not be in good taste at this moment, but she does have an image to uphold, and if she is failing at that, then critcism is warranted.

Typical of a closed minded Christian, what is a Pagan, just another religous person who has another name for the sky god. You follow and are entranced by Beck, yet he is not a christian, he’s a Mormon with beliefs, world apart from christian beliefs.

Nobody has a problem with the Native American or his religion… the problem is the insertion of the individual into the event.

It would be the same poor taste and lack of class.. if lets saaaayyy…. a mosque got shot up, and for the memorial service we had a Catholic priest, or better yet a Pentecostal Pastor open the memorial service with a blessing because “This is America, and Christianity was here on American soil before Islam was..

I thought the Native American blessing was just fine. It was a way to include the heritage of Arizona and pay tribute to the souls, which have passed, and the souls, which are healing.
The crowd, yes, they were a bit over the top, but it was a college crowd at a university, and so be it. Perhaps it was their way of healing. After all, after a funeral there is always food, kind words and laughter with the sadness.
And, I will give credit where credit is due … President Obama spoke well tonight and was wise in his choice of words. I agree wholeheartedly and was already thinking that we should live up to what the wide and loving eyes of Christina saw in her Country and her future.
God gave her to not only her parents on Sept. 11, 2001, but he gave her to our Country. She was our shining light on such a sad day, we just didn’t see it yet. Perhaps God took her back to his side on Saturday to remind us of this wonderful gift that we have here in our Country and on earth … freedom, liberty, and love. Let’s not waste it on bickering, let us move past this time and into a greater time … if not for anything else than for our children and for Christina’s memory.

Reading the comments here it is clear that Beck fans only show compassion when they are ordered to by their master. Beck fans are ignorant of the world around them, retreating to their God and Guns for comfort.

Did you note the cheers for Homeland Security Janet Napolitano? Where did THAT come from? From the CHEERING SECTION; ordinary citizens KNOW exactly how to act at a Memorial Service: respective, quiet, and not trying to make themselves notiticed like that stupid sheriff and Rep. Clyburn. This was NOT a Memorial Service. It was a PEP RALLY, the first of many for Obama’s run for re-election. GOD HELP US. There is NO RESPECT FOR THE DEAD when it comes to Politics. I said the same exact thing while I was watching. I thought it was supposed to be a somber event not a “pep rally”. I was totally embarassed and felt sorry for the families and the victims. The crowd wasn’t there for the victims and their family…they were there for their “Mourner in Cheif”. I thought that it was just I that felt this was totally inappropriate.
My heart aches for the victims and I will continue to pray for healing, not just physical, but mental and spiritual as well. God Bless.

It appears the closer to the 2012 elections near, BHO fakes more “compassion” and “concern”. I wonder if a member of congress had not been injured, if he and his entourage would have even made the effort. Afterall, he didn‘t make an effort to go to Arlington Nat’l Cemetary on Memorial Day, nor did he go to any of the memorials of the 11 killed from the oil rig explosion. We all know he has never stopped campaign mode.
The way this “memorial” was put together was a disgrace and a slap in the face to those in AZ, mourning and suffering.

I don’t like being cynical, at all. But having witnessed two-plus years of deceit, crass manipulation, outright theft, mendacity, and self-aggrandizement at the cost of our nation’s vitality, I agree.

The “powers and principalities” we’re facing have every advantage of media gloss and clever mass persuasion. God sees all, and knows all. If we are on His side, clinging to His robes – so to speak – we won’t be led astray.

The exuberant Liberal Left and the children of University of Arizona who were in attendance at the Memorial for Tucson shooting victims were a disservice to their president of the United States of America when they screamed feverishly and cheered for their beloved messiah.  What should have been a time for mourning was just the opposite.  I believe this was the presidents largest gathering of perceived constituents.  Who knows if all of them actually voted before or being citizens of this country.  They were there to cheer and cheer they did.  Places of worship and halls were overlooked so that The president could be seen.

Who’s idea was it to sabotage the presidents boost? Having scheduled the memorial in a beautiful historic 200 year old San Xavier Mission or any of the large sanctuaries throughout Tucson would have been the best setting without advanced public notice of the presidents anticipated attendance.  Instead of addressing the memorial to the victims family in a warm
atmosphere, the families hurt was drowned out by 14,000 plus crowd of lookey looks salivating at the aweness of his majesty.

The President “performed” well and that’s what will be remembered.

Or course you guys hate anything Obama says or does. Why even bother posting? Just say “ditto”. But here’s what the family of Giffords said through a spokesman:

C.J. Karamargin, communications director for Giffords:

“People need to cheer. People need to cry. There‘s a catharsis that’s necessary when we — when our community — goes through a tragedy like this. And that was the, I think, the great thing about the remarks that we heard tonight. It was an acknowledgment by the president of a community that’s trying to come to terms with unbearable grief. And he did, I think, an admirable, memorable job. In that arena, it was impossible not to be touched by the president’s words.”

First speach I heard from this President that was respectful to all, it was heartfelt and I appreciated it. It was a long time coming! The crowd on the other hand was about as classless as it could get! If it was my family members memorial service, I could not have sat through it.

      @jzs,

“Or course you guys hate anything Obama says or does.”

How soon we forget that this guy wants to destroy the American economy. Of course this is all a show.

@tower7femacamp: I think they should have blamed Art Bell’s rhetoric. He’s the one always talking about mind control and “occultish” things.

Doctor, President Obama “wants to destroy the economy?” Actually, the economy is improving and, although jobless rates are still high (although we‘ve stopped losing jobs and we’re far better off than the freefall in the days of the Bush administration), the stock market is doing well and company profits are at record levels.

Okay you say Obama is “trying” to destroying the economy. I say you are “trying” to destroy the economy. I say you are “trying” to get people to commit violance against government officials. I say you are “trying” to make a nuclear bomb in your basement. Can you prove me wrong?

even conservatives liked obamas speech. fox news liked it. made sarah palins speech look petty and self absorbed. Give him credit when its due, and make yourself appear to have a mind of your own, for once. even after all this, most of you will still say the man is “evil”, or a “terrorist muslim”. you guys just don’t get it. after all the threats of how he’s a socialist, a communist, etc, you have to wake up eventually and realize, you are wrong. he’s no different than the other presidents. you know how different my life is from when bush was in office? or when clinton was in office? its the same, its exactly the same. the world is not ending, and you need to stop with the constant drama, the hoopla, the stories and innuendo, you are like a bunch of middle aged women.

You are quite the hypocite, on one side of your month you say “stop all this name calling about Obama” and out of the other side of your mouth you throw your own misguided slur out about Palin! Practise what you preach and then you may find you have some credibility! Other wise you are just a two-faced-lier.

      @jzs,

“Actually, the economy is improving and, although jobless rates are still high (although we‘ve stopped losing jobs and we’re far better off than the freefall in the days of the Bush administration), the stock market is doing well and company profits are at record levels.”

Actually, the bubble markets are “improving”, if by improving you mean replacing the private sector with a Centrally-Planned/Socialist government-run economy. Unacceptable.

The “freefall”, as you call it, of the Bush Administration, is a misnomer. It was never logically possible for unemployment to reach 100%, because that would mean that all Americans would have to be producing nothing at all. In a couple of years, the economy would have rebounded were it not for all the bailouts and government takeovers, because realizing the actual value of labor and goods would have forced people to start living within their means and stop taking as many risks with their wealth.

Also, Bush created an unsustainable housing bubble through regulatory intervention – much like Obama is doing with the oil, automotive, financial, and health care industries. See here: “Continuing on the Road to Ruin”, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiInauovWDc .

Further, all of Obama’s proposed solutions to the economic crisis are consistent with the plans of the far Left, Central-Planning, anti-American radicals of the 60′s, who wanted – and still want – to destroy the American economy.

For example, the Cloward-and-Piven strategy to destroy America involves getting as many people as possible to accept government money – which actually comes from the private sector, so it’s destroying the private sector and replacing the free market with Socialism.

And the Marxist strategy is to cause the poor to rise up against the rich in support of a dictator that will supposedly punish those evil Capitalists. What the Marxists won’t tell you – or at least can’t tell you, because they’re ignorant – is that Marxism is internally inconsistent, in that the poor is said to be denied the value of their labor – which presumably acknowledges property rights to the fruits of one’s labor – but for some reason the rich do not have the same right to the value of their labor, which is property rights to the fruit of their labor: the means of production.

so, if you own something, whether you’re rich or poor, you get to do with it whatever you want. And someone seeking employment, since they own their own labor, get to do with it whatever he wants. Since the rich own wealth, they can pay however much they want for labor, and the poor will have to bargain with the rich for the amount of a wage. And if someone can do a comparable job to another Capitalist, then both of the Capitalists, as well as the workers, have some more options with which to negotiate that wage.

America was set up to ensure the liberty to pursue happiness – which includes the means of production; Such that the status of “rich” or “poor” was not based on favoritism, but on willingness, skill, and opportunity – all of which are available to every human being.

See, no matter what kind of economy we’re talking about – except for those run under despotism – you can only sell what people want to buy. So even if you’re an “evil” Capitalist who makes the best widget, if nobody wants to buy it, then that Capitalist is going to be poor.

So, in short, Marxism will always fail because it holds to a double-standard with regard to property rights.

Back to Obama: Marxism is the goal of the Unions and the Community Organizing groups – the labor workers of the Unions, and the poor of the Community Organizing groups, are the “proletariat” of today, and they are being exploited by Marxists to rise up against a straw man – to their own destruction, since by destroying Capitalism, they destroy the ability of Capitalists to provide a wage to a worker, and they also destroy their own liberty by which they might also pursue the means of production; And in the end, they will find that they’ve just taken the capacity for anyone to own the means of production, and simply given it to a few elite of the “ruling” class – a small, Capitalist Ruling Class. Congratulations, moron.
