Bachmann Makes 2012 Run Official: Voters Must Make a ‘Bold Choice’

Editor’s note: this story originally contained live video of Michel Bachmann’s announcement. It has been replaced with a relevant story.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Outspoken congresswoman and tea party favorite Michele Bachmann cast herself as the “bold choice” for the Republican presidential nomination as she formally kicked off her campaign Monday in her Iowa home town.

Outside a historic mansion in Waterloo, Bachmann said she is waging her campaign “not for vanity,“ but because voters ”must make a bold choice if we are to secure the promise of the future.”

As a new Iowa poll this past weekend signaled she’ll be a force in the state that opens the GOP nomination contest, Bachmann hopes to reshape the GOP field and how she’s viewed by voters. After the formal Iowa kickoff, she planned to shift her focus to New Hampshire and South Carolina, other early voting states with traditions of separating the viable contenders from the political also-rans.

Bachmann, 55, has many wondering if the edgy side that turned her into a conservative star will be the one she shows on the presidential campaign trail. Her say-anything approach has earned her a loyal following but also plenty of guff from detractors who see her as a fringe politician. Past missteps have only redoubled her me-against-the-world view of politics.

“Her trick is going to be to maintain that boldness and to somehow rein it in and discipline it so it works for her and not against her,” said GOP pollster Mike McKenna, who isn’t working for any 2012 presidential candidates.

In March, she famously flubbed Revolutionary War geography. She told a group of students and conservative activists in Manchester, N.H. “You’re the state where the shot was heard around the world in Lexington and Concord.” Those first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Massachusetts, not New Hampshire. She later admitted she made a mistake.

For this campaign, she has surrounded herself with no-nonsense veterans of national politics, some of whom have deep ties to the political establishment Bachmann typically eschews. They include a trio of Eds: campaign manager Ed Rollins, pollster Ed Goeas and consultant Ed Brookover. In Iowa and New Hampshire, she’s recruited aides who worked on the campaigns of previous presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and John McCain.

Bachmann, a three-term Minnesota lawmaker, insists the larger political stage won’t mean a new, less-provocative style.

“I’ve been consistent, nothing but consistent,” she said. “I don’t say things for political value. I’m authentic in what I say.”

Bachmann Makes 2012 Run Official: Voters Must Make a ‘Bold Choice’

Bachmann’s unswerving style provides a sharp contrast with the more measured way of 2012 rivals, such as former Govs. Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Others vying for the nomination are ex-Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and businessman Herman Cain.

Possible late entrants include Texas Gov. Rick Perry and 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

A Des Moines Register poll published Sunday showed Bachmann and Romney far out front of the others in Iowa.

Bachmann’s own climb has been swift, brushing off a school board race defeat just 12 years ago and moving rapidly from Minnesota’s state Senate to Congress. In Washington, Bachmann vaulted to prominence by trying to block and now promising to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law. She has also tangled with GOP House leaders over her concerns they are too timid on federal spending cuts.

She’s staunchly conservative on social issues, too, calling for more abortion restrictions and constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage.

In her latest national introduction, Bachmann has played up a softer side by highlighting her role in raising five children and 23 foster kids. But she’s also gone hard at Obama, laying federal debt and deficits at his feet and accusing him of pushing the nation toward socialism.

David Strom, a Republican long involved in Minnesota politics, said it would be a mistake for Bachmann to sand down her edginess.

“She’s not a maneuverer. At the end of the day she is going to distinguish herself by going out there and trying to draw people to her. I don’t think she will try to become more nuanced as politicians tend to do,” he said.

Those who have opposed Bachmann say she doesn’t budge on her views, even in tough races.

Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg, who lost to her in a 2008 congressional race, said he was frustrated that the more controversial Bachmann came off, the stronger she seemed to get. Her comments often fuel a fundraising machine that netted her $13.5 million for her last election.

“She can say something that’s just outrageous and just completely wrong and move on and never skip a beat,” Tinklenberg said.

Given the rise of the tea party movement, there may be even less reason for her to slide toward the political middle. Tea party members are seeking purity from the GOP candidates and have reacted skeptically to those largely linked to the party power brokers, particularly Romney.

“Truthfully, she’s a hell of a lot closer to where the party is right now than where they are,” McKenna said.

      …and speaking of Waterloo, Iowa.

Bachmann made a point of saying its also the hometown of John Wayne. Except not the John Wayne she was hoping to evoke. Waterloo is the hometown of John Wayne Gacy. The real John Wayne is from Winterset, Iowa.

Yesteday on Bob Shiefer’s show, Shiefer pointed out that Pulitzer Prize winning Politifact had pointed out 27 statements that she had made that ranged from somewhat untruthful to absolute lies. He chose one as an example, that being her statement that the Obama administration had only given one permit for off shore drilling when in fact they had given 270. He then asked if she was incorrect. She Read More… danced around on another subject and he repeated the question at which time she danced again. After the third time, Shiefer said that he had to take her non-answers as a refusal to admit she was wrong nor to answer the question. She is simply unqualified to be President or Vice President and is perhaps running only because she knows she can’t be re-elected in her own district next year.

All they have to do is just ask her about the truth! Not a bunch of made up LIES. When you lie you can’t remember what you said, later on. So when you are asking about a lie you get no answer! TV stations should not waste our time asking about proven lies just to embarrass people.

True. Being a Democrat should be embarrassing. The poor Democrats should be embarrassed over the incredible hypocrisy; They only hurt the poor more by getting in bed with these big businesses and getting ridiculous loopholes in the tax code and destroying small businesses by raising taxes on them. Virtually every place I’ve worked is now out of business.
Democrats working for the government should be embarrassed for selling out America’s future for their own selfish purposes.

With a total lack of response the U.S. Economy has ignored every borrowed stimulus dollar and continues to spiral down to the very bottom.
Obama cannot figure out that the central and most powerful stimulus to the American economy is liberty and freedom.
With all his paid learning Obama has no points of contact with the American people beyond Black Liberation and some Local Union member.

She is more than a “pit bull with lipstick” like Sarah; she is an actual “scare crow with eyelashes” who wants to scare the black crow DemoCraps away from our corn crops.

On the Christianity front; she takes full credit for the brave death of the Sullivan Brothers in WWII, to show her support for the War effort and to demonstrate her “We Stick Together” ethic in death or life. This will be tough for the tea party to justify with purists.

      @yeah

Typical neocon. He‘s a joke because he’s a constitutionalist and opposes fiat currency and supports individual liberty? Uh, OK. Go back to wrapping yourself in the flag again, calling yourself a patriot, and redefining what the constitution means to you. If there’s a joke around here, you’re it.

I cant believe some of these comments. Wake the hell up, are you conservatives or are you drinking cool-aid. Bachman is the real deal, I’d vote for her in a heartbeat. Her values can right the course of this nation and you guys are bashing her. Do your homework first, then lets see what you say.

MB is the anointed one for 2012, and chosen by our Lord who spoke directly to her instructing her to run for President. In Person. If you are a Christian and speak against her, you are a blasphemer, and if you fail to support her, you are working to defeat our Lord. Only the athiests and muslims will oppose her, and they will not survive 2013 after she wins in 2012.

Neocons talk the same garbage about Ron Paul and THAT‘S what’s old. Despite the fact that he has such a HUGE following and keeps winning polls…

      Ron Paul 2012.

Ron Paul doesn’t trample on the Constitution like Michelle Obama, I mean, Bachmann did when she voted for the Patriot Act extension.

She voted for the Patriot Act extension.
She voted for the Patriot Act extension.
She voted for the Patriot Act extension.
She voted for the Patriot Act extension.
She voted for the Patriot Act extension.
She voted for the Patriot Act extension.
      DISQUALIFIED!!!

Michelle Bachmann is a conservative phoney. She received over a quarter of a million dollars in Farm Aid now she doesn‘t want anyone else in the Country to benefit from Farm Aid plus she begged long and hard for ear mark but now she doesn’t want anyone else to get them, not to mention she had some 23 foster kids for which she got paid.

What’s the matter Michelle, you don’t anyone to benefit the way you did. Shall we just call you “Ms. Take-The-Money-and Run” Hypocrite?

What’s bold about spouting off tax policies and statements about being a “constitutionalist” with no specifics on how she would actually balance the budget and reduce the deficit. Again, a 5th grader can do the math. You can‘t balance the budget and you can’t achieve real deficit reduction without cutting defense significantly and some revenue enhancements. Again, like Palin she has these wonderful phrases that sound good, fire people up, but she has no clue on what the actually mean or how she would ever attain them.

Having been in foster care as a child, I can attest that there is no reasonable way to parent 20+ kids, let alone foster kids.

These type of people look at your children as money bags to collect from the government. They claim to do it out of love for children, but really it’s out of love for that STATE CHECK. Some of them are “successful child molesters”, meaning they don’t get caught. A lot of them psychologically molest the children and tell them their parents don’t want them. A lot of them are middle class suburbanite white women with no man in the home and using the children as supplemental income for their suburban lifestyle.

I’m not saying ALL foster parents are that way. But man, if a parent had an inkling of an idea of what their intentions are, you would NEVER allow your child into foster care.

      Ever.

With all due respect to Dr. Paul,

Those of you who say he is the only candidate worth voting for are incorrect.
He may indeed be the candidate who is correct on the most issues.
However, in all honesty, he is unelectable – proven unelectable.

His facts and knowledge are undisputable. I agree.

However, his quirky mannerisms and appearance will keep him from ever succeeding in a presidential election. It is not right, but it is a matter of fact.

He DOES drop his hardline libertarian views when it comes to matters of morality, which I think is a fault for him. A true dyed-in-the-wool libertarian would not legislate morality. This affects my respect for him. So long as he was a pure libertarian, I had complete respect for him. Whether or not I agree with him, I had to repsect his honesty. This deviation smacks of politics, which I distrust and disrespect.

My biggest apprehension re: Dr. Paul is, I am concerned he would seek to make the ‘correct’ changes ‘overnight’ – while he is correct that many things are unconstitutional – many of the entitlement programs, specifically, it would be life-threatening to many people if they vanished overnight. Compassion is required when addressign entitlements.

Were I president, I would want Dr. Ron Paul to be one of my closest advisors. THAT is the position where I feel Dr. Paul would be able to make his HIGHEST and MOST VALUABLE contribution to our society, to our nation, and to our people.

      Dr. Ron Paul for President

I call BS on your post. I’m not trying to argue with you, but I would like to hear your response.

Ron Paul is proven unelectable? By being reelected to Congress 12 times? FAIL.

Quirky Mannerism and Appearance? Opinionated drivel. FAIL.

Exactly what matters of “morality” does Ron Paul compromise his Libertarian view on? Examples?

And exactly what do you mean that he wants to “legislate morality”? Are you angry that Ron Paul wants to legalize freedom?
