Mubarak Will Not Step Down, Passes Some Power to VP

In an address delivered on state television Thursday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak rebuffed rumors that he would relinquish his power and step down from office. Instead, Mubarak insisted he would continue to serve out his term until the election this fall, reaffirming his pledge not to seek re-election at that time.

In the meantime, Mubarak pledged to transfer some of his presidential powers to Vice President Omar Suleiman. In the future, Mubarak also said the Egyptian military will ensure the peaceful transfer of power.

The embattled Egyptian president also seemed to deliver a direct, defiant message to the international community, saying he would “not accept foreign interventions.”

His remarks were largely aimed at the youth of Egypt who have only known one leader during their lifetimes. The “blood of your martyrs will not be wasted,” Mubarak insisted. “I will not be easy in punishing the people who have caused these injuries and I will hold accountable all the people who committed crimes against you.” To date, the United Nations estimates that 300 people have died in the unrest.

Mubarak also announced the formation of a committee that will study amendments to the Constitution, and another that will be responsible for the implementation of the commitments made by the president to the people. He also announced that a number of constitutional items have been amended to protect the rights to free assembly and speech.

“I announce in very plain, unequivocal words that I will not run in the coming presidential elections, satisfied with what I have offered to the nation for 60 years, in time of war and peace. I announce that I will adhere to this position and similarly remain adamant to shoulder my responsibility, protecting the constitution, safeguarding the interests of the people until the authority and power is handed over to the person who will be elected in fair and free elections.”

Protesters gathered in Cairo‘s Tahrir Square continued to demand Mubarak’s immediate resignation, chanting “Leave, leave, leave!”

Bolstered by early reports that Mubarak might announce his resignation Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama welcomed the move, announcing that the world was “witnessing history.”

President B.O. needs to stick to job creation and rule by example rather than tell other governments what to do. Remember how many times “jobs” has been the number One priority of his government. I am afraid the Egyptian situation is now turning into a crisis and our president only made the situation worse.

Yeah, I believe his statement about NOT taking advise from a foreign country was meant to be a SMACK DOWN to Obama, and rightfully so.

BUT – Mubarack is doing exactly what Obama has done with regards to this Health Care.
The Egyptians are telling Mubarack what they WANT and Mubarack ignores them and tells THEM what HE wants and is going to do.

Americans told Obama that we DO NOT WANT HC, and HE ignored it and continues to tell US what HE wants and is going to do.

Looks like, they are ONE OF THE SAME…or at least they’ve learned to play the same game, huh?

      Did anyone hear this today?
About an HOUR BEFORE Mubarak made his announcement – while just passing by my TV – I heard Obie talking to ????, and he basically was saying what was happening in Egyt was a historic event, blah, blah, blah.

At one point, he was about to say “ and during this TRANSFER” – HE STUMBLED/PAUSED AND ALMOST SAID “ TRANSFORMATION”… and I laughed because the word “ transforrmation” is HIS BIG SNOW-JOB WORD HE LIKES TO USE HERE IN THE US.

Obama KNOWS the use of certain words projects certain images.
In this case, using the word “ transfer” (a kinder, gentler word) implies a simple, from one hand to the other, whereas, “ TRANSFORMATION” suggests ” A CHANGE FROM SOMETHING INTO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OR UNKNOWN.

      Ole’ Obie IS TRICKY, huh?

I commend him on his decision, but unfortunately I think that this gets in the way of some very, very powerful people. I hope this man escapes assassination until something that makes sense over there unfolds. Maybe that is a very uneducated outlook and I am open for an education. I just see someone that gets along with Israel and provides a cushion for us in the U.S. . Is it possible that this choice although causing a ton of violence most likely will ensure a radical muslim group might not take Egypt after all?

They’ve already publicly backed the people in the streets, but our only allies in the region (Saudis and Israelis) have made it clear we have made a big mistake. Mubarak just made the US look like an incompetent fools to the rest of the world, and our Allies can’t trust us anymore. Meanwhile, Obama has pinned his entire foriegn policy on a group of young revolutionaries in the streets of Cairo. I used to think Obama would be remembered for his healthcare initiative, but now I beleive his legacy will be his complete destruction of US foreign relations, and his backing of radical Muslims. The worst part is, Obama is getting exactly what he wants… at the expense of all Americans.

Did anyone hear Suleiman’s words? “This is the hour of truth. You know who you are. Ask your conscience.”

When it comes down to it, Israel is Egypt’s only true friend and proud Egyptians know it. When Suleiman said “I pray to God for my country” you could tell he meant The Creator-Of-The-Universe and not allah-the miserable-pagan-moon-god-of-destruction you hear from the prayers of fervent Muslims.

Also Egyptian born Father Zakaria and his Coptic TV Satellite Show which weekly tears Mohammed lovers to shreds (broadcast from America) is seen weekly by millions in Egypt and the Arab world. He has a HUGE fatwa on his head because he shakes the faith of Mohammed lovers TO THEIR CORE and has been doing this for three years or more

So when Suleimann says “The hour of truth has arrived” — I believe him. — in every good sense.

well Obama tried to sell this off as he big O the great peace maker , all that about Democracy blah blah blah. Mubarak came out and snubbed him big time . maybe the Administration has a better clue now of how the middle east actually works , little more than a coca cola and kumba ya . Mubarak is still in , and Obama comes out looking foolish and incompetent!

Sounds to me like obama is calling on our youth to pull the same stunt if he loses re-election in 2012. Sad day for our youth if they do.
Commitment requires the heart of a lion. Ask yourselves, youth of America, if you have such a heart and think seriously of the consequences if you choose the path these “war-mongers” want you to walk.
It will be bloody, it will be painful, and ultimately, you will lose.
I am BEGGING the youth reading this to consider another path, one that is not violent, but peaceful and will guarentee your rights as an American to succeed if you have the will to just try it: The Constitution.

I think more hinges on the military than the muslim brotherhood. This is not going to be pretty…

Heavenly Father…Lord, I do not know your plans for this country or the rest of the world but I pray you watch over your children there and keep them safe through this. Lord, I know sometimes our situation only seems to be worsening despite our faith and prayers but we know it is all according to your Will Lord. We love you and trust in you, that you will protect and guide us so that we can do your work while we are here. We eagerly watch your plan unfolding and we look to the coming of your Son Jesus. It is in His name we pray.

      Amen

Amen. Lord you are now our only hope, that your prophesy be fulfilled, that we may live in a time of tribulation, that we may come unscathed and worship in your Glory, and these evil times set upon us, may one day be vanquished by our Savior, Jesus Christ….
Please God, send your Two Witnesses to us now so we may have faith that we will all be ok, those among us who believe…
      In Jesus name we pray…
      Amen
