Deja Vu: Noisy Unions Storm Michigan Capitol Protesting GOP Gov’s Budget Bill

It’s deja vu all over again. A Republican governor’s budget meets strong union resistance. Union members flood into the state capitol building. Hippie drum circles commence.
Okay, I haven’t seen any drums YET, but I’ve heard all the familiar chants: “This is what democracy looks like!”; “Solidarity forever!”; and everyone’s favorite “They got bailouts, we got sold out!” Liberal blog site DemocraticUnderground.com announced earlier: Occupation of Michigan State Capitol in Lansing Has Begun.” Unions and other liberal interest groups are once again scheduling bus trips to bring protesters into Lansing from across the state.
Michigan’s newly elected Republican Gov. Rick Snyder is proposing to cut state taxes by $1.7 billion, financed in part by applying the state income tax to public and private pensions. Additionally, Snyder’s budget seeks $360 million in wage concessions from state employees with half the savings coming from requiring a minimum 20 percent employee contribution toward their own health insurance costs.
Snyder’s approach to a union “crackdown” has been much more modest than that of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker who recently approved a measure stripping public unions of many collective bargaining privileges. In the past, Snyder has signaled opposition to so-called “Right to Work” legislation and efforts to get rid of prevailing wage rules which many say have had significant negative impacts on the state’s ability to compete. Nevertheless, unions complain that Snyder’s financial emergency legislation would allow state-appointed fiscal managers to terminate labor agreements.
Union bosses in Michigan are crying foul, arguing that pensioners are already struggling:
Speaking to thousands of union members from the steps of the Capitol, UAW President Bob King put Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget and tax proposal in stark terms, asserting that it’s designed to take money out of the pockets of those with low wages and fixed income in order to distribute it to “wealthy” business owners.
“This governor and this Republican Party want to take almost $2 billion more off of working people in Michigan and who does he want to give it to?” King yelled. “The wealthy, the corporations.”
“And for this governor to want to steal from them to give it to the wealthy, is that wrong?” King asked. By eliminating the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit, as Snyder’s proposal does, “they want to increase taxes on people working every day, every week, the working poor in Michigan.”
King called Snyder’s efforts part of what he called a broad Republican “attack on the middle class.”
Fresh from his appearance in Wisconsin, progressive filmmaker Michael Moore was on hand, streaming live video from the capitol building.
“I’m asking everyone who can to take Wednesday off and head to the State Capitol in Lansing to protest the cruel and downright frightening legislation currently being jammed down our throats,” Moore wrote on his website. “Governor Snyder, once elected, yanked off his nice-guy mask to reveal that he is in fact a multi-millionaire hell-bent on destroying our state and turning it over to his buddies from Wall Street … Trust me, you will rue the day you sat home and did nothing while thieves posing as politicians stole your Great Lakes State from you.”
At the end of the day, state police successfully closed down the capitol building after arresting five student protesters for trespassing after they refused to leave.

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 6:13pmI look at the poor Japanese suffering in silence and coping with the worst of all disasters, and then I look at these simpering tools, whining about their “unfair” treatment. I am drawn to the conclusion that these “workers” are what the Democrat Party is. God help us if such a disaster strikes the US…these will be the people we will have to stop from looting the homes of the stricken. In fact, thety might not wait for a natural disaster. They may create one for themselves. And we’ll be waiting!

Posted on March 16, 2011 at 7:37pmKen2, you are absolutely right! I have been thinking this all along. Seeing the demeanor and the manners of the Japanese people and the kindness they have shown to one another makes you stop and think how it would be if the same or even less happened here. Especially if the entirely infrasystem broke down. The thugs would be ripping down doors to get theirs, even if they had to kill you for it. Self preservation, only they don’t want to do anything to prepare for it. They’d rather have someone else pay the bill, or suffer the consequences, while they keep sucking on the tit of the taxpayer….I’m sick of it. Prepare folks, and be prepared to help your neighbors also…as I hope they will help you.

“Despite what some among us would like to believe it is not because of our creative ideas; it is not because of the merit of our positions; it is not because we care about children; and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child.
The NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power. And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of million of dollars in dues each year“ ”

How do you figure that the poor are taxed to “give” to the rich? The last time I looked, people like Bill Gates, and Springfield were not twisting arms to make you buy their products. Besides, it is impossible to tax a business or rich person as they will pass the tax amount on to the consumer, (the poor), there for you are really taxing the poor even more.

Waht are they now bussng the thugs from one state capital to the next. do these people have jobs or are they simply mercenaries on the union payrole? Wha they hate more than anythingis that the states are no longer to collet union dues from all state employees to pad their wallets and build their political war chests. Unions are so 20th Century. We are now moving on leaving them behind. Without government employees, total union membeship is less than 8 percent ofthe workforce nation wide. And most of that is concetrated in a few very Democratic states. The unions have not helped their members. Instead they have priced them out of the labor pool and forece their jobs overseas. I think the lemings realize this but in some state they have no choice. They have to be a member to work. This has got to be unconstitutional. The right to work is superior to the right to organize.

I miss home moved to Texas in Feb of 09. Because I lost hope and now I have some again for my Great state. Unions Welfare Marxest bad. PEOPLE OF MICHIGAN WAKING UP AFTER 50 YEARS PRICELESS. Other thing its great when friends family tell you your nuts for your views and how crazy you are for going to Texas. Then 2 years later tells you how right you where and how can we get Michigan like Texas. Not broke no more not as rich as I was when things was good up there. But at least AM FREE IN TEXAS.
