Obama Addresses Nation on Debt Talks Stalemate

The President is addressing the nation Monday evening to discuss the impending debt limit deadline and the apparent impasse between Republicans and Democrats over deficit reduction proposals.

AP reports that White House spokesman Jay Carney announced the address after House Republican and Senate Democratic leaders unveiled competing plans to raise the government’s borrowing limit.

President Obama has made clear his desire for a deficit cutting plan that would also increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy in order to address the country’s long-term debt problems.

Obama is supporting a proposal by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that would trim $2.7 trillion of government spending over 10 years. Reid‘s plan would also push the government’s borrowing authority through next year, a time frame the President and Democratic leaders are reportedly demanding. However, Reid’s plan does not include new tax revenue, something Obama has also demanded.

Meanwhile, House Speaker John Boehner has praised the House GOP’s new plan, which includes an immediate $1.2 trillion in spending cuts and caps combined with a $900 billion increase in the nation’s borrowing limit. House Republicans’ plan would also call for the creation of a congressional committee whose mission would be to come up with roughly an additional $2 trillion in cuts.

Boehner reportedly think‘s Reid’s plan fails to address Medicare and Medicaid and would not impose meaningful changes in the way the government spends money.

      I’m glad he had no flag behind him, with all the lies he spewed!

      He lists the expensive programs from the Bush administration (wars, medicare upgrade, etc.), but FAILS to list his own healthcare reform as a huge expense.

      Next he says that the Speaker left the talks because he didn’t want to raise taxes. In fact, Boehner left when the prez upped his tax request from $800Billion to $1,200Billion, breaking their previous agreement. I stopped listening to the liar-in-chief shortly afterward. Blech!

      Entitlement programs need to be dumped, as well as the managing (not the Constitutional “regulating”) of the economy. The Commerce clause has nothing to do with telling consenting adults what, or how, they can trade with each other.

      Lie after lie after lie everyday. I have never ever seen a so-called president lie so much. I guess he thinks there‘s a large percentage of voters out there that do not know what’s going on, and he can pull the wool over there eyes again and again. Apparently it is working, cause there’s over 40% that approve of his policies and think he is doing a good job. A higher percentage even like him, but aren’t that keen on his policies. With his record of complete and utter non-accomplishments, I would think he could barely make 10%. Who are these people?

      All we have to do is get rid of the earned income credit. Why pay them with food stamps, welfare, and then come tax time pay even more out of our pockets? That’s rewarding them for not working. When I was little (in the 70′s) it was actually an embarrassment to be on welfare. Now it seems to be a badge of pride. “See how I can bilk the government for money? And I didn’t even need to work for them.” Welfare is the new slavery.

    God Above help us with this moron in office…the fact is he is still lying through his teeth; passing the blame and the buck to the Conservatives and demanding the fact of more taxes, more taxes, and yet more taxes…same old game of blame, blame, blame….social warfare, class warfare, economical warfare, and so forth…nothing new.

    And he wonders why the Right is not giving in any further? He has no plan other than the collapse of the nation, and taking as much power and control as he can usurp; all at the same time passing the blame onto the Right.

    Look for him to announce he is invoking the 14th Amendment garbage of his; there is a good chance it will happen tonight or in the next couple of days.

    And Mr Obama, Reid refused to allow a floor call or even a debate on the bills sent to the Senate.

      Reddenblack: The president is not the “decider”. We do not have a Dictatorial form of Government. He is one of the three equal branches of our Federalist Representative Government. His “vetoes” can be overturned. The Legislative Branch makes the laws & Constitutional Amendments (which he has no say in).

      And they are theoretically cutting that trillion. Both the Republican and Democratic plans count the savings from getting out of the wars as part of their deficit reduction. Of course that only works if we really do get out and don’t get sucked into a new one.
