Occupy Protesters Attempt to Reclaim Zuccotti Park on New Year’s Eve


New York Times:

More than 300 people associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement gathered in Zuccotti Park on Saturday and, in a return to scenes from earlier in the year, held a general assembly meeting, chanted the now familiar slogan “We are the 99 percent” and experienced a bit of friction with security guards.

At about 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, about 100 people started flowing into the park, according to witnesses, and someone erected what was described as a small tent built for a child. Two young girls, who were at the park with their mother, began playing inside.

Though the New York City Police Department had officers fanned out throughout the city for the holiday, there were police officers lined up across the street from Zuccotti Park, at the ready alongside private security guards. They stepped in.

Police officers and security guards instructed protesters to remove the tent, saying it violated rules issued by the park’s owner, Brookfield Properties, banning tents, tarps and other structures inside the square. Meanwhile, a police officer and a security guard, who declined to identify themselves, tried to block other protesters, and at least one reporter, from entering the park. Some people disregarded their instructions and squeezed their bodies through the spaces between metal barricades.

      Maybe we are splitting as species. The new breed — H o m o Semisapiens Collectivus, seems to have one flaw, though. It doesn’t have an inclination to reproduce. So, it may be just one of these instances when nature leads into an evolutionary dead end experiment–a nice try but no cigar moment.

      I saw medical and legal tables at both Zuccotti Park and occupy D.C. I know two of the lawyers acting as observers in D.C. There are people volunteering. The fact is, many of the protesters aren’t troubled by drugs or alcohol, they are troubled by a crumbling future and reduced job earnings and prospects. The Middle Class is shrinking and current college graduates have a very high unemployment rates, and they will take 10 years to make up for the last two or three years, if they ever do. Just as my grandparents were damaged by the Great Depression, my children have been damaged by the Great Recession.

      DESERTROSE1960 needs to look at this realistically. College was pushed for everyone to have that piece of paper and when everyone has it then there is more competition for jobs. Jobs are fewer because of what this administration is doing to businesses and thus the influx of the newly graduated have much more competition. Protesting and whining is ridiculous. Everyone says the middle class is shrinking but the middle class today has more than in generations past and much more than other countries. This is a sound bite used over and over about the shrinking middle class. You have to actually be smart about what courses you take in college and what career path you want to invest in. Giving everyone a diploma has not made everyone smart either. I don’t feel sorry for these whiners OWS kids. They are spoiled brats. They need to learn some lessons in the real world. If they are “troubled” by their crumbling future they need to find a better way than protesting, causing the cities more expense and whining. The people in the Great Depression were not given the things people are being given today and they were not expecting the handouts. There is no comparison.

      Desertrose1960, there is no doubt that Obama’s recession has taken its toll, but not to the extent that the great depression took. The difference in the reaction, of course, is that in the 1930‘s we didn’t have a generation of people with so little going for it that it‘s members weren’t able to get off their collective arse and find a way to do something useful FOR THEMSELVES!!! These days the first reaction is to look to the government to take care of them. Pitiful – no drive left; no gumption in the lot of them. So their answer is to get together, crap in each others tents, and make their respective cities spend a lot of money on them – one way or another!! Just pitiful.

      @JUJUBEEBEE, what you say about the troubled economy and the negative growth in small business, started before Obama, but its’ continuing decline definitely exacerbated by Obama with no real in tent to either halt the decline or create real jobs.

      You need to take another look at your statement about the middle class not decreasing, for that is one of the goals and part of the agenda of Obama and the cronies that he surrounds himself with and from their perspective they are being successful, for the middle class is declining, and if Obama has his way, the middle class will be destroyed – one of the many reasons that Obama absolutely must be sent home in November 2012, preferably all the way back to Africa, for he is not welcome here – at least by true God fearing, traditional value oriented Americans, who believe in the Constitution and the underlying principles of our Founding Fathers.

      DESERTROSE1960, the owners of the park don’t want them there. The police put up a barricade to keep them out. At this point they are breaking the law. They are wasting the tax payers time and money with their childish protests. If they can’t live by the rules then put them out of their misery. I for one don’t want to pay for their malicious protests and I imagine most of America agrees with me. At some point we have to take back our communities and we need to set examples. If they know they risk death they won’t break the law so easily. the risk versus reward is too great.

      @Casca, I’ve been to TeaCon events, it‘s a lot of scared older people who don’t want “those people” to get their stuff. Many of them weren’t polite, either. I talked to the staffs of several Congress member who were genuinely afraid of the nasty, ugly, and disruptive behavior of those “normal people
      on March 20, 2010. Oh, and they left all sorts of ugly, misspelled signs outside the House Office buildings. So, they litter, too.
      That everyone gets a trophy crap is just that, crap. I never got a trophy for just showing up, and since I didn’t put my children in organized sports, neither did they. I don’t know anyone who got a trophy just for showing up, but Glenn just loves to talk about that silliness. And it is silliness. But, Glenn said it, so it has to be true. What did you think when he trashed people who just wanted to be “Middle Class”? Being “Middle Class” is just a participation trophy.

      What would any of you said to the Blacks who risked fire hoses, attack dogs, and vicious beatings to protest for their civil rights? Would you have told them they deserved it, would you have cheered when the cops taughts those uppity people their lesson? You can say no, but your actions betray you.

      @Booger71, When you held some of your rallies, you got permits paid for by the Koch brothers (9/12 for instance.) But you didn’t always keep the place clean. I saw the stuff you left behind. I also watched you guys flaut the Park Rangers at 8/28. You just happen to believe what Beck told you. Guess what, he lies on a regular basis. The folks in D.C. just got a permit to stay until mid-February. There were lots of arrests at Civil Rights rallies, too. It seems those Black people didn’t want to let things like refused permits and police action stop them from trying to get things like voting rights, schooling, and housing. Civil Disobedience is a powerful tool. Gandhi used it a lot, and got arrested a lot, too.

      Psst. DESERTROSE, not sure you are not being paid by the liberal left to run around the country stirring up trouble.

      One thing I am very sure of, Glenn Beck does not lie, and you can take that to the bank. Not saying he has never misstated anything, but he certainly does not make a practice of it, and if he has made a misstatement, he usually corrects it later.

      @Darmok, I’ve seen what happens to Conservatives on HuffPo and MMFA. Mostly, they’re treated better than you guys treat me. I’ve been yelled at and called all manner of vile names by people who have never interacted with me, they just spew their hatred at me. It’s fine, it doesn‘t hurt my feelings and it’s often very funny, because they accuse me of the most vile stuff that isn’t even remotely true, but might say something about them. Sometimes, I just have to laugh. It’s a sad laugh, given how pathetic some of them are, but I laugh.

      I‘ve often defended Conservatives’ rights to their opinions. Many of the TeaCons are very sincere, often uninformed, but sincere. I‘ve also seen that Beck trolls will resort to names when their lies aren’t swallowed. Some of them just start out with names. A lot of the Liberal posters on HuffPo and MMFA get tired of the lies and pretend games, so they do hurl insults at selected trolls, and a lot of us don’t have a lot of respect for pseudo-Conservatives. It comes from having spent decades holding our tongues and listening to some blow-hard spout crap about how horrible Liberals are. Of course, if you confront them with facts, they get personal and insulting, so, we keep our mouths shut. I did this for years myself. The Birther crap was the last straw for me. I got on line and I started speaking out.

      I have a nephew that lives and works in New York. He has to pass the Park everyday and he will tell you, these people are vile and nasty. And he is not a wall street worker, all of his friends are very liberal. What you and others won‘t admit is these people want to shut down any free or opposing speech that doesn’t fall along their thinking. And if you went to Tea Parties like you said you have, sorry, I have been to lots of Tea Parties and never seen what you are talking about. Although In my town, there was an Occupy tent city, and it seems anyone who went downt to the city park was confronted by lunatic children that only wanted you to listen to their beliefs. Anyone who went to the park to enjoy it would be accosted by them, and the OWS people started to become very territorial over THEIR park. It stopped becoming a public park, it was theirs. The police did shoo them out and with the snow, they finally did go back to their parents basement. I seen these people up close, they are nuts and when you do try to talk logic to them, they go to shouting you down or just throwing out talking points. I have friends who are diehard liberals and they do the same thing when you throw facts out. As far as the Tea Party, just look at the 9/28 pictures after the rally and what John Stewarts after rally pictures looked like. For that matter, look at how Zucotti Park looked like before OWS and what they had to clean up after they were thrown out.

The Tea Party people were not trying to keep a handle on their stuff and screwing everybody else~they were trying to wake people up to the danger of this country going bankrupt like Greece. If the Occupy folks had any desire to help anyone they would get off their butts and start trying to make something of themselves.
