President Obama Confirms Explosives in Terror Threat

WASHINGTON – Authorities on three continents thwarted multiple terrorist attacks aimed at the United States Friday, seizing two explosive packages addressed to Chicago-area synagogues and packed aboard cargo jets from Yemen. Parts of the plot might remain undetected, President Barack Obama’s counterterror chief warned.

Obama called the coordinated attacks a “credible terrorist threat” amid worldwide fears that al-Qaida was launching a major new campaign of assaults.

“The United States is not assuming that the attacks were disrupted and is remaining vigilant,” Obama adviser John Brennan said at the White House.

One of the packages was found aboard a cargo plane in Dubai, the other in England. In the U.S., cargo planes were searched up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and an Emirates Airlines passenger jet was escorted down the coast to New York by American fighter jets.

No explosives were found aboard those planes, though the investigation was continuing on at least two.

Obama’s sobering assessment, delivered from the White House podium, unfolded four days before national elections in which discussion of terrorism has played almost no role. The president went ahead with weekend campaign appearances.

The terrorist efforts “underscore the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism,” the president said. While he said both packages that contained explosives originated in Yemen, he did not explicitly assign blame to al-Qaida, which is active in the Arab nation and long has made clear its goal of launching new attacks on the United States.

Authorities in Dubai intercepted one explosive device. The second package was aboard a plane searched in East Midlands, north of London, and officials said it contained a printer toner cartridge with wires and powder. Brennan said the devices were in packages about the size of a breadbox.

While the president didn‘t specifically accuse Yemen’s al-Qaida branch, officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said they were increasingly certain that was the source. The same group was responsible for the attempted bombing of a U.S.-bound airliner last Christmas.

The radical U.S.-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who now lives in hiding in Yemen, is believed to have helped inspire recent attacks including the Fort Hood shooting, the Times Square bombing attempt and the failed Detroit airliner bombing last Christmas Day.

Most of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation.

Brennan later told reporters that the explosives “were in a form that was designed to try to carry out some type of attack,” but he provided no further details.

“The forensic analysis is under way,” he said, adding, “Clearly from the initial observation, the initial analysis that was done, the materials that were found in the device that was uncovered was intended to do harm.”

    What really burns my you know what is that 13 or so soldiers were killed with many more injured and yet the President did not call a press conference and no where near the coverage as “suspicious packages”. While I am sure cargo planes are a problem so was the not so crazy “radical muslim” that killed in TX. I am just thinking that this is overblown die to timing

    This is so inconvenient and you can tell that the obam-ass is not happy. Not only does this pull him away (for a few minutes) from his 24-7 campaigning schedule, but he also had to put on a tie; never has any president sacrificed so much.

    There is so much speculation from one end of the spectrum to the other about this threat. The response seems to be fairly complete so, I’ll just wait ’til it all shakes out to read anything into the story.

      Also….. tell me again…. why is he continuing on the campaign trail this weekend? Am i missing something? So with threats of bombs and terror attacks it is just campaign business as usual? Really weird! And he says we are in touch with our “friends and allies”….Do we still have any???

      Something is really strange about this whole thing. And yes, four days before the election. Do you think elections will be held?

      While everyone is talking in the news about this event… keep you eyes on what’s now going on that no one is talking about…ie: election fraud. Bucks County in PA has just sequestered absentee ballots due to threats of voter fraud. STAY ALERT PEOPLE.

      the more you think about it the more this just doesnt make sense. how is it that the packages were even in route before they are discovered? the crew cant check them when the planes are flying can they? or are they scanned and someone is reviewing xrays after the planes have already left? that would seem kind of stupid.and now you see that tsa is really ramping up security on domestic travel and they will probably keep it that way . i dont doubt there are terrorist and that we need security but it seems like whatever happens it always used as an excuse to push us further into a police state and yet they leave the mexican border wide open, why fly into the USA when you can bring in anything you want in from mexico. personally i dont believe anything the gov. tells me and and only half of what people do. as glenn likes to say question everything and think outside the box. once you start to wake up you can see how all this starts to make sense and the funny thing is that now they’re not even trying to hide anything. i dont like predictions but if the left looses the house and the senate i think that the mask will come off and everyone will see the true agenda of the elites

      Listen, with Mr Obama I will give a SMALL benefit of a doubt in that he may have only found out about the threats at nearly the last minute. He will use this emergency to his and the Progressives advantage in any way possible though. Will there be any retaliation against the terrorists in Yemen? Do not hold your breath on it – other than talk, talk, and more talk while they are ready to destroy our country.

      Watch for anything suspicious upon the Tuesday elections, for that would be a great time for them to strike – and with Soros having stacked the deck in the electorial commisioners in many areas, he is to try something as well.

      I was thinking the same thing!!! I was wondering if the President was alerted last night at around 10:30 how did packages even get off loaded this AM and already on the trucks in NY. Seems to me we had a big enough window to keep all packages from getting on shipping trucks. Call me crazy.

      warnings of this attack, and information was given to Washington officials in SEPTEMBER. THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS . they have known this was in the works for a while , and the attempt happened now so they are now talking about it. if you look at the history of these attacks they are more often than not attempted around dates of some importance……….any responsibility for stopping this, and any credit due is to be given to our men working hard everyday to protect us, not the idiot in chief.

      Wow, Obama has taken over the news, I don’t think I have ever heard a president announce the findings of any investigation before. I have saved all yea little children, see how good I am. If there was anything there, which I doubt unless it was planted, the whole thing is a show to have some effect on the elections. UPS is probably an accomplice, I think I saw their name on that commie list at stopbeck.com. I wonder what they have planned for the weekend. Busy, Busy, Busy.

      I cannot believe you all are falling for this. Are you seriously sleeping so hard that you believe this False flag terror attack. Don’t you find it weird that they tested the “device” in the UK and found NO explosives, and now they are saying that these devices are explosive? Wake up people, they are using these FAKE terror plots to take more and more rights away from us. This one will be used for that and to show how “ON THE BALL” this administration is in fighting terrorism.

      There is only one answer in stopping these terror attacks, and that is to get rid of this illegal and evil federal Government. It is not the “RADICAL MUSLIMS” we need to be afraid of. its the NWO that Bush, Obama, and now more and more, I am thinking Beck are trying to bring us into.

      I completely agree that this looks more like a ‘set up’. Someone had to come up with a way to change our view of him as our view today is that of a ‘foolish little ranting spoiled brat not getting his way’ man child. Now, he comes across more “presidential” more “in charge”–NOT! I’m still not impressed with him. He still shames the office of our country with all he’s passed down.
