HOUSTON (AP) — Though not yet a declared candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is putting his faith under the national spotlight as a White House prospect with an important conservative constituency all to himself.
He’s addressing a daylong prayer rally Saturday that he has spearheaded while weighing a campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

Participants pray at The Response, a call to prayer for a nation in crisis, Saturday, August 6, 2011, in Houston. Texas Gov. Rick Perry is scheduled to attend the daylong prayer rally despite criticism that the event inappropriately mixes religion and politics. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip)
Perry says the event is not political but rather aimed at rallying the nation to a Christian unity during difficult times, but he will be reaching thousands of religious conservatives, many of whom vote in Republican primaries, especially in early voting states Iowa and South Carolina.
More than 8,000 evangelical Christians, most from Texas, had registered as of Friday to attend the event at Reliant Stadium, which seats 71,500 and was the site of the 2004 Super Bowl. Organizers said they expected thousands more than that to show up.
Perry’s midday speech will reach thousands of social-values conservatives, but he’s not expected to take questions from reporters covering the religious rally.
“The questions are all going to be political, and that would just take away from the event,” Perry spokesman Mark Miner said.
More than 1,000 churches around the country plan to stream the seven-hour event on the Internet.
“With the economy in trouble, communities in crisis and people adrift in a sea of moral relativism, we need God’s help,” Perry said in a June video when he announced the event, which is being called The Response USA. “That‘s’ why I’m calling on Americans to pray and fast, like Jesus did and as God called the Israelites to do in the book of Joel.”
The rally is financed by The American Family Association, a Tupelo, Miss.-based group that opposes abortion and gay rights and believes that the First Amendment freedom of religion applies only to Christians.
Although Perry invited all the nation’s governors, members of Congress and the Obama administration, it was not clear whether any top elected officials besides Perry would attend. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback had said he would attend, although event organizers said Friday it was unclear whether the Republican governor would be there.
Perry, who has said he is considering a presidential run in part out of a religious calling, is expected to announce his plans sometime after Saturday’s event. He plans to travel to South Carolina the following Saturday, when several of the declared Republican candidates for president will be in Ames, Iowa, for that state’s presidential straw poll, a closely watched test of campaign strength in the leadoff caucus state.
Some Republican strategists have said Perry would be better off to identify himself as a fiscal conservative, touting Texas’ recent job gains, as he approaches a decision that could shake up the race. Nodding to evangelical voters before entering the race could send the signal he’s not the pro-business conservative some activists have said is lacking in the 2012 GOP field.
“He doesn’t need to bow to the Christian right because he already has his bona fides there,” said Iowa Republican Doug Gross, who was a top backer of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s 2008 campaign but has been cool to support him again.
And it’s not clear that the event will even help Perry with Christian voters.
Pastor Cary Gordon of Sioux City’s Cornerstone World Outreach church said his church will likely webcast the event, although Gordon, an influential GOP activist in Iowa, does not plan to support Perry.
Gordon said he objects to Perry’s comments, in light of New York’s legalization of gay marriage in June, that the state had the right to enact such measures.
“All of our rights come from God,” Gordon said. “Rick Perry becomes the poster child for the problem because he is suggesting men grant men rights.”

Posted on August 7, 2011 at 7:28am“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.” Matthew 6:5
Beware of these politicians that try to make a show of their religion. True faith is about humility and a personal relationship with God, not the garbage you see these showboat pastors and opportunist politicians put on.
If a candidate says they’re a Christian, and behaves like a Christian, and upholds the values of a Christian, that’s good enough for me. I don‘t need to hear a big fiery sermon or a showboatin’ prayer out of them to believe they’re Christian. In fact, when I do see that sort of garbage, I get suspicious. A true person of faith doesn’t need to prove it to anybody. Someone who is insecure in their faith or goes to church for the wrong reasons constantly needs to step out and “be seen” going through the motions.
But that’s not true faith. Shame on Perry for turning his faith into a political springboard.
Besides, he’s not conservative at all when you actually look at his record…

Report Post »How nice it would have been IF you had gone to the event, OR even bothered to watch it from one of the churches!!!! The only thing that came close to being political was when the prayer leaders or the politicans asked people to pray for our leaders!!! Many of us think that our country has left so many of the values we started with behind, that we are in big trouble. Of course, if you don’t agree with us, just read the news!!

Did you watch this event? I have to admit, I didn’t get to watch a lot because I had to take my son to the emergency room, but I saw singing and praying, not a speck to politics. And the founder said no one would be allowed to talk more than 7 minutes. They said and one came to hear preaching, but to pray.

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 7:02amI was glad that I could be a part of “The Response” on Saturday. The thing that hit me the most was the very small number of people protesting in relation to the number of believers that arrived to take part in the event. It’s hard to believe that we have turned our GREAT Nation over to a small group of liberal minded people.

Report Post »Having said that, I have absolutely no problem with anybody regardless of their faith. This Country was founded on God and Faith. It is shown and proven every where you look. It is an America founded on Christian values and beliefs. What I do NOT understand is why others have such a problem with that?? Why are they He!! bent on destroying Christian values in America? What is the possible reward in doing that? No other Country in the world would allow anyone or a group of people to come into their Country and destroy what it was founded upon. It’s very principles.
I think that our very own Constitution and Bill of Rights are being used against us in every way possible. These same rights that were founded to protect us also protect our enemies and they subvert our Constitution and use it to change our Laws and to protect THEIR own beliefs while trying to destroy any others. What I don’t understand, one again, is why? World domination? What?

I am sorry that you lost your faith, it must have been something difficult in your life that caused that. If you’re passionate and wise enought to see what is going on against our country and our precious Constitution you still have that ember of faith of knowing right from wrong. Hold onto that and build up again. This is a Christian nation, not a perfect nation. Our founders wrote the Constitution with reverance to the Lord above to guide their hands to do the righteous action in the creation of an idea for a new nation. And they did it under the constant threat of death. That’s faithfulness. God Bless us all.

And why they want to get rid of the Constitution, because it is founded on God.

There is nothing, no one, no thing, no place, no achievement, no goal, no person…nothing more important in life than your relationship with GOD. We’ve ALL gone through periods of doubt and questioning. I converted to the Catholic Church because the protestants I had been with all my life started saying things like “I’m not sure Jesus was the actual SON of GOD” and things that are just WRONG. We’re all on the hill climbing up to GOD. Sometimes we trip and fall, some of us fall off the mountain altogether…but I hope you will take 5 minutes (go for a walk or get somewhere quiet) and just tell GOD what you told us. NOTHING else counts.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 6:54pm@Rocky Creek: Destroy Christianity? Not gonna happen. The Lord said that He would establish His church and the Gates of Hell could not/ would not prevail against it. However, if the Church wants to play footsie with the world, that part will be chopped off. That part that relies on Him will prevail. It may not look like the comfortable Sunday goin’ to meeting that much of our nation enjoys at present but rather like the underground church in China and elsewhere in the world where the open mention of the Lord Jesus Christ is forbidden. Beck has said repeatedly to get to know your neighbors and become self reliant. I say know who you can trust as well, because in other parts of the world overtaken by totalitarian regimes, believers have been betrayed to the “authorities” by those false friends who prefer a plate of food to faith in the Lord.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 7:07pmWHY? Simple! Christianity flys in the face of world unity. Christianity and Judeao values are a one God faith and basically say that if you accept and believe you will live forever, if you do not, then you will be set aside and apart from God forever. Time to come back to YOUR faith and not your religion and seek answers directly from God through the Holy spirit whom Jesus said would come to comfort us after his departure. This happened already long ago and we call it Pentecost. 50 days after Christ ascended into heaven. I had a discussion with a 92 year old man who said he was not a religious man because of all the twistings man has done with RELIGION. I agree and so did Jesus. Its not about practice, ritual and the like, its about a childlike belief that God was, is and is to come. Accept that and believe on him. Call on him through your own spirit without a church building, nor a priest and be saved. The rest is easy because the Holy spirit will open your eyes so wide to what has been going on you will be totally amazed and forever changed. This does not sound like your experience so far. There are Satanic forces loose in the world and are hell bent on a system of destruction to you, me and themselves. They believe in the One World Government solution and worship false gods. Go view all 76 parts of the FuelProject on youtube. I challenge you to do it and educate yourself on how this world got here. Glen has mentioned many of the same things.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 10:08pmThe question once again is whether any nation conceived in liberty and dedicate to the preposition that all men are created equal. Whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure.
We are the guardian of our constitution, our freedom and we have failed. We have been too busy with our personal lives, to keep an eye on our most precious gift and we have squandered it. A free nation demands of it citizens a higher order of devotion. A greater level of vigilance to protect that we inherited from others who sacrifice so much.
It is not our constitution, our bill of rights being used against us. It our apathy and our disregard for that we should have hold dear. Obama did not elect himself president, we elected him there. There were plenty of evidences of what he was and what he intended to do and yet we elected him. It is not our constitution or our bill or rights that put him there. We did…
Now we must decide if this nation is worth the trouble or whether we should chuck it all. This Criminal-in-chief has carried out the agenda to destroy our way of life masterfully. Are we going to let this poor excuse for a human being win? We need to buckle up and fight for what is our birthright and send of the socialist and communist back into the darkness where they belong. We can sit here and lament. We have to do what we always do. Get up pick up the pieces and rebuilt our nation. to be continued

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 2:01pmScott Baker, I’m ashamed of you. You have taken something completely honorable and tainted it with political motives. You should immediately rewrite this story and correct it or take it down altogether, since it isn’t a news story at all.
Here’s what this is like: Perry goes to the grocery store to buy groceries. You write, “Governor Perry appeared at the grocery store, claiming he was there to buy groceries. Reporters wanted to ask him questions about what his grocery store run implicated about his run for the presidency, but he insisted he was just there to buy groceries. It is obvious, however, that the grocery buying gives him the opportunity to kiss babies, fraternize with the common folk, and shake hands with cashiers. We can only surmise that this is one more activity where he is campaigning without making a declaration.”
Here‘s what you DON’T get. The core of the function today is the scripture that says “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear their prayer and heal their land.”
Notice it DOESN’T say, “If my people who are called by my name will CONVINCE THE GAYS AND LESBIANS AND DEMOCRATS AND SOCIALISTS TO humble themselves and turn from their wicked ways, etc.” The entire responsibility of that verse rests on those who are believers.
HOW ON EARTH can you have a problem with that, and worse, insist it has a political motive. This is so muc

Also, maybe some of the problems we are now facing are because as a nation we are turning from God. Maybe if you would acknowlege this and repent (along with those who seem to be doing just that at this rally) then we could find favor with God and see some real restoration for this country. Personally, I pray for our country and I ask God to reveal any sin on my part that hinders us from receiving the full measure of His blessing. See First John chapter 5 verses 12 throught 14, ie 1John 12:14. The Signers also did everything possible for them to do in the natural. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to one another in support of their intent. This fulfills another scripture which teaches us to do all we can do and then stand firm in hope and trust towards God. See Ephesians 6:13 where it says, …and having done all (you can do), then stand firm (in the grace of God trusting Him to make it sufficient.) Christ is our sufficiency, especially when we are not presumptuous, but pay the price we are given to do.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 2:14pmWhere 2 or more are gathered in my name, I will hear their prayers and bless their land. I hope I got that right. My memory isn’t as good as it used to be, but I know God told us we could pray anyway, anywhere we want, and He will answer. We need Gods answer more now than ever before. The devil is working overtime, we must work overtime too.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 10:07pmI agree, pray in your CLOSETS and your Father in Heaven which sees in secret shall reward you openly. Jesus said that.
I cringe when I see people say the name of God repeatedly FRANTICALLY, and with phonied up tears like they are at a Beatles Concert, and call that praise. Jesus talked about praying on street corners. We don’t need to do this. We need to pray in secret and pray sincere, and stop the public show of it. Evangelicals don’t seem to know any different though.
George Bush invoked God’s name a lot, and sounded a lot like Perry does, but George Bush had 9/11 INSIDE JOB happen under his watch, and you’ve got to believe something is up with that. I think Jesus talked of wolves in sheeps clothing too. We should NEVER trust in man.

Posted on August 7, 2011 at 12:59amIt is good to pray in the secret place with your concerns before God. Also God wants corporate solemn assemblies like the one we just seen today, and which is done in prayer houses all over the earth, this is not for the ears and eyes of man, this is petitioning before the Lord, intercession. If it was for man then yes your scripture verse applies, but the motive is in the heart, I know that many people were there today not to be seen by man but to cry out to Almighty God for mercy.

Corrine you misquote the New Testament, I used to listen to preachers and then I read what the book said, you live by the book, not the preacher

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 1:40pmThe state of Washington needs open prayer form as Rick Perry and, of course Glenn Beck, had the courage to do. It would be nice to see the likes of Franklin Graham, Rick Warren, and Dr. Charles Stanley travel together and fill our arenas with any faiths willing to love each other in spite of our faiths and pray for our nation, and as the one gentleman said lets ask America to bless God. In the end every nation will bow down to Him.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 1:25pmI dont think he is bowing to the religious right Good Heavens!
That would be ridiculous and is Not the point here!
Texas is in dire straits and has NO help from the govt
( as they turn them down at every hand!)
So as a leader of this great state…you bow you knee before God and
humble yourself before Him
for any other reason for this event / this service
would all be in vain and worthless…
If my people who are called by my name
would humble themselves and pray and
seek my face and turn from their wicked way
then will you/i/we hear from heaven…and
i will heal their land…
And Texas needs the hand of God to move NOW!
So as Americans we should all be agreeing with them
that God would hear their petiton before Him and the throne of Heaven!
and bring relief/ rain / restore their land! Amen!
If he does this for any other purpose it is a fruitless endeavor! I certainly believe he is honorable in this matter.. The stakes for Texas are very high…They need God’s hand to move on their behalf!

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 4:29pmIts sad that they turned this political. Gov. Perry has called for days of prayer on different occassions throughout his time in office in this great state. I applaud his convictions and his ability to ignore what the non-believers and haters will say and just do what is simply.. the right thing to do. I only pray that God hears us and that Gov Perry knows that even if we werent there in attendance, we are with him in spirit in asking God for mercy on all of us. For His grace to ease the suffering of our land and His hand to touch the hearts of those who need Him most.

There were no politics in involved it was a day of prayer. Why can’t our Governor pray? I was there and it was very nice with great music. There were two other Governors there also. This country better start praying evil is around us and in our White House they have no good in their hearts for this country. Everything is being done on purpose. We may have to stand up and take thins country back if God don’t cast them out. I know some of our freinds here think it was a joke, you won’t when obama is done.

My freind no matter what a person has done in their life God forgives. We are all human and find our way back to do good. I read some nasty things about Gov Perry and if they were true he is forgiven. I don‘t believe they are true so the person who writes this stuff can’t feel good about it. I will take Perry over obama any day. It is time to think about our country and how we get rid of obama and his regime.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 1:07pmWe need someone on our side, but I’m not too certain about him yet. Is he a rhino in sheep’s clothing? Is much of Texas going to the Chinese? Why did he attend the secretive Bilderberg group. Give him time to reveal himself for what he may or may not represent. Remember, Obama got himself in pretty quick, and many were asking, “Who is he” months (and now years) after the election.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 1:06pmI am sure of those who comes out in public against Christ is probably calling his name out loud behind closed door…begging him for mercy and much more. I am glad it is only God (the Spirit) who sees our hearts and knows ALL THINGS! I know he will let his POWER known. The tongue is the biggest destroyer. We will in the end destroy ourselves…because with LIFE comes DEATH. There is no way around it.

Posted on August 6, 2011 at 1:01pmI was very proud of Rick Perry for standing up there and speaking the truth about how God and Jesus Christ do not affiliate themselves with political groups. They don’t have a D or R behind their names. Pray on my fellow citizens. I will be in Israel with Glenn, praying for the same thing in just a few short days. As a Christian and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I am so happy to see so many of us turning to our Savior and God!
We must all find ourselves and then we can identify the darkness. With so many faithful people in our country, identifying darkness is getting easier. WE all have a lot of hard work to do to bring this country back. The moral decay of our society must be stopped. Open your mouth and say it is NOT OK.
God Bless America!

Its like he is saying that Jesus doesn’t inspire anybody to do good things or make good organizations. YES, He does. God does that.
It also saying that Jesus has no official religion in this world. YES He does. So Rick, you went EVANGELICAL on us and put up the walls again.
