Wisconsin Assembly Passes Anti-Collective Bargaining Bill

Editor’s note: This post previously contained a live-stream video of the Assembly’s vote. Now that the vote is over, we have updated the post with the breaking news. The bill, passed by the Assembly and Senate, now goes to Gov. Scott Walker, who will sign it.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin lawmakers have voted to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from the state’s public workers in one of the strongest blows to the power of unions in years.

The state’s Assembly passed Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s explosive proposal 53-42 Thursday. The state’s Senate approved it the night before after using a procedural move to bypass its AWOL Democrats.

Walker says he’ll sign the legislation as quickly as possible.

The vote brings a swift end to a standoff over union rights that has rocked Wisconsin and the nation. Tens of thousands of protesters have converged on the state’s Capitol for weeks of demonstrations.

Wisconsin Assembly Passes Anti Collective Bargaining Bill

The implementation of Walker’s proposal will be a key victory for Republicans who have targeted unions amid efforts to slash government spending.

Below is AP footage of protesters being dragged out of the Wisconsin capital earlier today. The Blaze reported on that here.

Its not over. When the union guy was working them into a frenzy, he also told them to make a run on the M&I Bank. That chant was Move your Money. This is about taking down the country.

“Bill Gross” US has no way out of debt trap.
Pimco CIO Bill Gross, who runs the largest and highly profitable hedge fund says this about entitlements. Hang on folks:
    —-
The answer, he suggests, is to have a serious discussion in Washington about Social Security and Medicare, not just the discretionary spending around the edges. But doing that in a serious way implies a major change in the American way of life, too.

“If we do decide to reduce our deficits, then of course our standard of living will not be what it was because we are simply not allowing enough, or as much, money as we’ve become used to in terms of those entitlement-spending programs,” he says.

A failure to rein in spending and rising interest rates could cause that to spike to “Greek-like” levels if not addressed, Gross warns.

“When a country reaches a certain debt level, confidence in that country’s ability to repay that debt becomes jeopardized,” Gross says.

As for Washington, Gross says, don’t get your hopes up.

“Perhaps in 2012 it will be addressed,” Gross says. However, ultimately, history has proven that both Democrats and Republicans have been big spenders and low taxers, he warns.

“Both are equally at fault here, and to suggest otherwise, I think, is not being realistic,” he says. “I don’t have too much faith and hope.”

Billionaire real-estate magnate Sam Zell, meanwhile, warns that Americans should brace for a “disastrous” 25 percent decline in the standard of living if the U.S. dollar’s reign as the global reserve currency ever ends.

He says that there are signs in the market that it could eventually happen. As it is now, a Korean manufacturer who wants to sell to Brazil must first buy dollars to complete the deal. If countries decide to bypass the dollar, the effect would be a disaster, Zell says.

“Frankly, I think we’re at a tipping point. What’s my biggest single financial concern is the loss of the dollar as the reserve currency,” he told CNBC in an interview. “I can’t imagine anything being more disastrous to our country than if the dollar lost its reserve-currency status.”

I’m glad they finally got this through. Personally, I think the Gov should have fired all the unionized teachers and used scabs instead. The kids would have received a much better education. A lot of teachers out there are incompetent…especially in math and science. The profession needs to be cleansed periodically to get rid of the “dead wood”…

time for extreme union violence and riots and destruction, and all of the Che tricks in their book, time for unions to come out in full force to teach the taxpayes a lesson, you greedy taxpayers, you greedy small buisneess owners, don’t you know it takes a lot of money to not work a full year, and to not pay into your own retirement, or your healthcare. because we have to give a lot of money in union dues to give to democrat polititicans and campaigns, so we unions need more taxpayer money to fund things like that…greedy taxpayes, don’t you get how much you are taking from our lives..now we will have actually PAY for things, besides democrat elections and union dues to keep democrats in power, so we don’t have to pay for those things we are now going to have pay for…how cruel and aweful you taxpayers are……..

If there was no forced union membership, the unions would die… or at least become irrelavent. Firefighters and the Police protect the lives of citizens, and perhaps their work rules aren’t as ridiculous as the paper-pusher State employees. There has been plenty of times when you hear about an off-duty Cop who steps in to stop a crime in progress, instead walking away because the union rules say that he/she must. The same can be said about firefighters.

The average elementary and high school teacher salary in Wisconsin is $51,000.00 with Benefits of $25,000.00 a year. Those “paper-pushing state employees” as you call them pay 30% in taxes and estimate that they donate $400.00 a year in student school supplies. They work more days each 9-month year than the days Wisconsin State legislators are in session. The WI Senators earn, on average, $146,500.00 salary, $32,000.00 benefits and $22,651.00 in travel, mileage and other perks.

Actually, I wasn’t referring to Teachers as “paper-pushers” but to State employees who work as Administrative Assistants, Office Clerks and such. As to the Teachers, tenure is being phased out in Wisconsin and this should be done everywhere in the USA. Tenure for teachers is bad for “the children” because it protects the incompetents and there is no incentive for the really good teachers because it doesn’t matter under a system using “tenure”. If the “good” teacher was the last hired, that teacher is the first to go.

Wow, Sleazy, the teachers make that much? That is REALLY good for a part time job! Also, when firefighters and the police do not do their job, there are consequences. Teachers have been doing a crap job for too long without any. It is only partially their fault. They are working with the policies and curriculum they are given but they fight against standards and improvement so they are culpable.

The average elementary and high school teacher salary in Wisconsin is $51,000.00 with Benefits of $25,000.00 – a whopping $76,000.00 a year. The average Wall Street banker works fewer days than the average public school teacher. Both work 20 to 30% MORE than the average Federal legislator schedule and 50-60% more than the Wisconsin State legislator session. WI Senators are paid $49,943.00 salary, up to $22,651.00 in per diem benefits and $33,002.00 in travel, mileage and other expenses. The average Senator also receives $98,700.00 in other income or salary. Teachers pay 30% in taxes and estimate that they donate $400.00 a year in student school supplies. The Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants estimates that the average wage earner above 120,000.00 pays income taxes at the 10% to 15% level.

Wisconsin state employees already do contribute to their own benefits and have agreed to pay more and they already pay 100% of the contributions to their own pensions in a deferred compensation arrangement.
Now that the teachers are under control, we can go for the police, then any military retirees who “double-dip” with jobs; then go for disabled persons who are also 65 years old, the list of entitlement savings is potentially endless!

http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/jobopps/BENEFITS.HTM Take a look at this web site from the WI government listing the “rights” state unions are fighting for. Some of the highlights are a minimum 13 days paid vacation after 6 months, 4.5 personal days, and 5 hours of sick pay accumulated every bi week pay period. This averages out to 16.25 days a year which indefinitely rolls over and can be used after retirement to pay for other benefits. Not including holidays, state employee’s can get over 30 days off work a year, paid…if my math is correct.

They were not targeted for one major reason. Under current bargaining rules they are not allowed to strike without prior approval to do so. If they were to be added into this it would allow the Police and Fire to strike every time one of them gets a hang nail if they so chose (currently they are only allowed to do so on their own time I.E. off duty hours or during pre-approved leave). That makes it a public safety issue. You just can‘t have police and fire walking off the job leaving nothing in it’s place. This is really why they were left off the chopping block.

hi Mil_Mom, thanks for the question and comment — The article was written by a Mr. Varney on the Fox News web page Thursday – he was concerned that there were some military veterans in the police unions who were caught on camera supporting the protesters, even though they are registered republicans. Are you saying that’s not true? Are you saying blue collar workers do not belong to the Republican party? (Even estimated at less than 1 out of 5). I just don‘t know because I’m an independent. 20% of the population is not going to rule us by virtue of dirty $ and they are not going to like the outcome for their side overall.

Only more evidence that the Tea-Baggers are not patriots, but astro-turf lackeys for the Koch brothers and DC insiders. No real patriot would cheer as rights are trampled and laws broken.

Recall every republican and throw the tin pot dictator Walker to the street.

“20% of the population is not going to rule us by virtue of dirty $ and they are not going to like the outcome for their side overall.”

I found your analogy hilariously ironic given that the top 10% of the nation takes home 40% of the income, and controls some 90% of the transferable intergenerational wealth (capital goods, i.e. the means of production)–wake up idiot, you ALREADY ARE ruled by 20% of the population (actually less) with dirty $ and its not the Unions…there just a convenient sideshow to distract you while the capitalists loot the finance industry, the State’s treasury, and the economy writ large before absconding to Singapore…well THEY don’t have to go to Singapore PERSONALLY (not so long as they can keep throwing up smokescreens and keep the American polity complacent), they just need to move the money they’ve “acquired” there so they don’t have to give so much of what they stole back (funny how people want to get back what was stolen from them), how very onerous of us to leave them with scant millions and/or billions of dollars. One word of warning. If we don’t start reversing this entitlement mentality, while we can, one day we will wakeup in a welfare state. We need to fight as hard as we can to put politicians in Washington that will reduce the size of government and get us all back to work. This is not going to be an easy task because we have too many Marxists and communists indoctrinating our kids, judicial system and Legislature. To win we must stay involved and committed. We must pray constantly for God to help us defeat these evil.

      @ The Third…
If we are in fact ruled by these supposed 20% of elites already, where are they in their powerfull capaciy to check us? Funny how you throw around loose associations with big money but months after a landslide election nothing is there. The Tea Party voted and it was settled. We will vote again and you will lose…again. Who is really the idiot? All our $ didn’t win did it?

I‘m sorry your family has not managed to provide for it’s future generations by accumulating free and clear wealth like people who work for a living have. I quit working last year just to take my $ out of their hands and I have no debt and pay no taxes. So my question to you is: who is screwing who here? The banksters haven’t tapped me…sorry for you once again. Maybe you shouldn’t borrow from them if they are so evil huh?
I saw this coming 12 years ago and moved out of their rat race and positioned myself to survive the stupidity.Too bad you are part of the problem.

For those who think that rights are being taken away, let me remind you. This is why the founders established that rights come from God and not any man. If man is the granter of rights (like collective bargaining) they can be taken away. Therefore, it is not a right but a privilege. Governments are created to secure liberty and protect those rights. Our founders further gave us a process for establishing new rights. This is the Amendment process. If you want collective bargaining rights, change the constitution. Then it is a right. But what man giveth man can taketh away… prohibition anyone?

I am watching closely as this whole process has sickened me. Be it the childish behavior of the Senate Democrats, the actions of the demonstrators, the willingness of the demonstrators to stand with self avowed socialists and communists who are using them, or the actions of the republicans to pull a procedural move, it all is disturbing. What is blatantly clear is that normal, law abiding, true middle class america has witnessed the true level of corruption of unions, socialists, radicals, and how expertly they can stir the mob. God save the republic!

A final note on the chant … “this is what democracy looks like.” Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding whats for lunch. Got it?

Here in IL we have a PROGRESSIVE who is putting the burdens of CHICAGO on the people of the state.. Daley and the Unions spent the pension money on buying votes and pushing their agenda and NOW along with the the 66% income tax increase they will be taking a % of your gross income back to 2002 for things you MAY or MAY NOT have bought on the internet.. at stores NOT in IL.. as well as they are considering taxing SS.. for ALL seniors.. while Daley retires with the money he took from the populace and the UNION bosses have gotten their dues the PEOPLE are expected to pay..We could use some COMMON SENSE politicians in this state..

      ENCINOM

I worked 30 years as a college educated engineer in a machine tool business. I also worked for a company that had no union. Our competitors in the same industry that had unions went out of business long before my company. My company finally had to shut our doors due to the inability to compete with the international market which could just beat our pants off in pricing. That is the fair market system. I think unions had their place in the early 1900‘s but have grown to such a huge out of control monster that they’ve priced the American market right out of any competitive strategy. ENCINOM, I’ve seen your posts before and beleive you to be a true Christian. Please look at the assembly men and women in the fisrt picture of this post. They are bowing their heads in prayer. Their not looking to see if their shoelaces are tied. How many union meetings have you attended where the meeting was led by prayer. Thank God for men and women who are trying to do their job to the absolute best of their ability. May God bless them and forgive us for our judgement.
