Watch Ron Paul Make it Official: ‘The Time Is Right’

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Rep. Ron Paul announced Friday that he will run for the GOP nomination for president in 2012, the third attempt for the man known on Capitol Hill as “Dr. No” for his enthusiasm for bashing runaway spending and government overreach.

Watch Ron Paul Make it Official: The Time Is Right

“Time has come around to the point where the people are agreeing with much of what I’ve been saying for 30 years. So, I think the time is right,” said the 75-year-old Paul, who first ran for president as a Libertarian in 1988.

Paul made his announcement in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America” from New Hampshire, where he planned his first event for his presidential campaign on Friday.

Three years ago, the former flight surgeon and outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve became an Internet sensation – and a prodigious fundraiser- when he made a spirited but doomed bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

First elected to Congress in 1976, he is known for holding unconventional views while keeping a smile on his face, espousing a sort of modern Republican populism.

The obstetrician has delivered more than 4,000 babies and is personally against abortion, but he doesn’t think the federal government should regulate it. That’s a function of state government, he says.

He has also said he wants to abolish the Internal Revenue Service, favors returning the United States to the gold standard in monetary policy and wants the U.S out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Democrats have tried repeatedly to beat him in a congressional district that stretches from the outskirts of Corpus Christi to Galveston. But the independent swath of coastal Texas seems a good fit for the maverick doctor. He has 18 grandchildren, according to his website, and he and his wife of 54 years, Carol, are known widely in Paul’s district for the cookbooks they give away to supporters.

“The secret to his success is his authenticity,” said Democratic consultant Jeff Crosby, who grew up in Paul’s district. “He’s an authentic nut.”

Watch Ron Paul Make it Official: The Time Is Right

Crosby, who worked to defeat Paul in 2006 – unsuccessfully – described the difficulty he had trying to persuade voters to reject what he thought were the candidate’s radical views.

“Just the mere fact that he does what he says he’s going to do, regardless of how nutty or ineffective it may be, they like it,” Crosby said. “A lot of folks along the coast have never expected much from government, and they’re getting it.”

Paul, a native of Pittsburgh, is both a spiritual father and actual father in the tea party movement. His son, tea party darling Rand Paul, won a Senate seat in Kentucky last year and has become an ardent proponent of spending cuts and smaller government.

As far back as 2007, long before people were evoking the fabled Boston Tea Party to symbolize their disgust with an overtaxing central government, Ron Paul was hosting a “Tea Party Fundraiser” aboard a shrimp boat near Galveston.

Organizer and Paul campaign volunteer Elizabeth Day remembers that supporters wore period dress and rolled fake barrels of tea into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

“When people come to believe in Ron Paul, there is a passion that burns within us,” said Day, a 57-year-old oil company revenue analyst. “To me, Ron Paul is the tea party.”

The elder Paul has built coalitions that include senior citizen “granny warriors” and pot-smoking libertarians. During his 1988 presidential run, High Times magazine, which caters to marijuana users, published a cover story under the headline, “Ron Paul: Pro-Pot Presidential Candidate.”

Paul has expressed the view that the states, not the federal government, should regulate vices like pornography and drugs.

What sets Paul apart most from his GOP brethren are his views that defense spending needs to shrink and that the U.S. should get out of its two wars. Paul says the conflicts are financially unsustainable – and another drag on a battered U.S. dollar that he believes is on the verge of collapse.

He also disputes a fundamental underpinning of the war in Iraq, namely that Islamic terrorists must be stopped overseas before they can attack the United States.

“They came over here because we were over there,” Paul said in the run-up to the 2008 campaign. “We occupy their territory. It would be like if the Chinese had their navy in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Paul has routinely turned down pork-barrel spending for his own district, but he has earned praise at home for refusing to sign up for lucrative pension benefits to which he is entitled as a member of Congress. Paul took a break from the House after his failed 1988 presidential bid but was re-elected in 1996.

Though he has voiced support for term limits, Paul has been in Congress for almost 30 years. Thanks to a law first crafted for Texas-born President Lyndon Johnson, he was able to run for the House and the presidency at the same time in 2008. Supporters figure he’ll do the same in 2012.

Former Texas GOP gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina counts herself among the die-hard Ron Paul followers who won’t let age, unconventional views or the professed tea party proclivities of other candidates shake her away from the soft-spoken presidential contender.

“All the Republicans say we need to reduce spending,” said Medina. “They talk about it, but they don’t actually deliver on those promises. He’s different.”

‘Libertarian utopia that can be found in Somalia and on the streets of Cairo’

This is a distortion an inaccurate: Somalia and Egypt both are without a respective Bill of Rights and closer to tyrannical military police states. The Federal Reserve is an economic issue by which the institution counterfeits money and devalues the currency, hence answering the question of perpetual inflation

Paul is a pacifist and won’t win for that single belief alone. He said this during the debates last week…”if we just love our enemies, they will love us back.” He said no to secret prisons and no to torture and both of those gave us Bin Laden. Are you kidding me? I‘d vote for GWB 43 again before I’d vote for him. What’s good is it to shut the Fed, if we let terrorists run amok all over the world INCLUDING ISRAEL. Most, not all, of his followers are flat out anarchists and what they have to offer America is NOT a Republic based on the rule of law. They also firmly believed 9/11 was inside job. NO THANKS to legalized drugs, prostitution, homosexual marriage and abortion.

Word to the wise…if CNN, Gallup and Juan Williams, the statists in the press are backing RP, that’s all the more reason to support a fiscal AND a social conservative. You think they fear RP winning….h#ll no! But they do fear Palin, Bachmann and Ryan.

      1) ”if we just love our enemies, they will love us back”
I don’t believe Candidate Paul has ever said that. The point is to set an example by striving for virtue and excellence while exercising good will and self-discipline; this in turn dissolves hatred and fear

      2) no to secret prisons and torture that gave us Bin Laden

Candidate Paul espouses fair trials to any individual (inc. bin Laden or yourself if accused of being a terrorist) to prove their innocence/guilt. Otherwise, Presidents assassinating people by their word alone = dictatorship

      3) shut the Fed

Candidate Dr. Paul introduced legislation to audit the Federal Reserve, which practically heads the Treasury and elementally counterfeits money. This in turn devalues the currency and has initiated perpetual inflation since 1913.

      5) anarchists and a republic based on the rule of law

Dr. Paul did not support collusion between the government and the Wall Street bailout of 2008

      6) 9/11 was inside job

Without a fair public trial for any accused, conspiracy theories will persist

      8) legalized drugs and prostitution

The point of legalizing drugs is that this candidate espouses your own self-judgment and maturity to endure the consequences of your own actions

      9) homosexual marriage

Candidate Paul has espoused keeping the government out of any individual’s private lives and letting freedom of religion ordain marriage

      10) abortion

Candidate Paul’s position has been that even though

Our military is protecting everyone else but our own borders. I’m sure by now all those countries we have bases in can handle whatever skirmishes come their way. We just can’t afford it anymore.
I say if everyone who could took care of their own families, we wouldn’t need the government to spend so much on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Churches need to step it up also and do more for the less fortunate in our society instead of building mega church buildings.
I say we need to scrap the whole budget and start from scratch. Departments need to submit their budgets to congress and then congress needs to go over it with a fine tooth comb and see where they can trim what was subnitted. We need less lawyers running for congress, and more CPA’s.

Most Americans are very stupid people. They like to vote for somebody that looks good and speaks tantalizing to them and tell people what they want to hear. Ron Paul is strictly a constitution man. Even if I misunderstand some of his stands, it is because he bases things on the constitution and the states having the power, not the federal government. He would make a great president.

I stand by what I said. Clearly articulated ideas backed up by facts will defeat platitudes. The president won once by speaking in platitudes; he won’t be able to pull off that trick again. Independent voters sided with Obama in 2008 because they wanted to make history, as well as believing those platitudes and the idea that McCain was another Bush. However, Obama has acquired a record that he has to run on and it isn’t a strong one; that is the reality he faces.

In regards to the MSM, such as MSNBC, they are, of course, going to prop up Obama. But do you honestly believe that Ed Schultz and Lawrence O’Donnell are going to win the hearts and minds of Independent voters with their rhetoric? But I do agree with you that the uninformed lemmings will continue to do what they always do – follow the party line, vote who they are told to vote for, and continue to believe the lies. However, ideas and facts defeated platitudes and rhetoric last November and won the debate this year in Wisconsin; in 2012, I think it will happen again.

Ron Paul is not that problem. Were not going to agree 100% with every candidate. But Ron Paul is one of the few candidates with values that he sticks up for. I understand that Beck doesn‘t like that Paul doesn’t want to regulate drugs and prostitution. But, this is a small thing in the whole process.

Let‘s refrain from calling our fellow conservatives ’nuts’ and support them. And if you want to disagree with a portion of their platform, then do it. But Paul isn’t the problem. He has values he stands up for it. That is not the problem.

I consider myself a fairly strong Libertarian, but I’ve only heard Ron Paul say 1 thing that I disagreed with. I totally agree with letting people live their lives as they see fit (even if they choose to do things that may harm themselves like drinking, drugs, or prostitution). But Racheal Maddow was trying to get a sound bite from him saying he didn’t support the “Civil Rights Act of 1964”, and he kept saying that it was a question of whether private business should be allowed to run their business as they see fit.

His view was pure Libertarian, but I think that if we have laws that allow the disenfranchise a segment of our population which will force them into eternal poverty, then we are a degenerate nation.

No, the secret to his success is his adherence to, and defense of, our Constitution.

      Celia from Springfield, OH said,

“Do you think everyone should just be responsible for themselves and if a flood washes your hous away no FEMA? Sink or swim?”

What Celia doesn‘t understand is that Ron Paul’s position on this issue is in the context of a truly free market system, instead of the Corporatist and overregulated market we have now. Without all the regulations, and having more money in your pocket due to lower taxes, people would be able to recover from a flood scenario a lot faster than we can now.

Think about when Hurricane Katrina hit: The Federal government actually violated people’s rights when they kept people in the city, not allowing them to get out.

Also, think about the BP oil spill: The private sector was ready to help, but the Obama Administration deliberately waited many weeks to do something in order to allow it to become a bigger crisis than it was, so they could take advantage of it to push their Cap and Trade/ Green Economy lie.

This is the context in which you should unerstand Ron Paul‘s response to Celia’s flood scenario. It makes economic sense, and it’s Constitutional. And in case you forgot, the whole point of the Constitution is to set people free from the would-be central planners of government that try to impede individual economic growth.

When Ron Paul made his statement about the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he was taking a stance for allowing the FREE MARKET to determine whether these businesses who want to discriminate sink or swim.

If they want to be racist and self-segregate, let them. The free market will isolate and marginalize them, then they will perish.

“His view was pure Libertarian, but I think that if we have laws that allow the disenfranchise a segment of our population which will force them into eternal poverty, then we are a degenerate nation.”

But what you’re not understanding is that in a free market, there will be racists and non-racists, and those who don’t judge the character of someone by the color of their skin, will do better at business because they will have more humans buying their stuff.

Also, everyone – no matter their skin color – would be allowed to run their own businesses and compete with the racists.

Also, again, in a free market, you wouldn’t have crony Capitalism, so you wouldn’t have the Corporatist system that allowed racism in government. Remember, we are only partly free today – we have a decent amount of Corporatism in our market, which is unConstitutional.

But fundamentally, what the Civil Rights Act did was – however good the intentions were (and I suspect that Black Liberation Theology was influential in passing the act) – tell people what they could and couldn’t do with their own merchandise, which is unConstitutional.

It is funny you mention O’reilly, I used to like O’reilly, more so when I was a “neocon”.

I find O’reilly interesting because he spent so much time spouting off about Trump, even when it was painfully obvious that Trump would not get permanent traction.

So it saddens me when O’reilly is willing to sacrifice principle, simply because of some perceived soundbite (which is and probably was taken out of context).

Then again, I tend to find O’reilly clueless really, when he makes statements like “We are a noble nation…” thereby implying it is our responsibility to pay for all foreign wars where injustice is present. That is reality, injustice is everywhere, and we cannot afford to stop it all.
