Watch Egyptian Film Star Omar Sharif Allegedly Slap a Woman on the Red Carpet

Did he or didn’t he? Egyptian movie star Omar Sharif has come under fire after he allegedly slapped a woman at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in Quatar yesterday.
The 79-year-old star was conducting interviews and being photographed on the red carpet when a woman reportedly made an offensive remark. In a video that is being carried by TMZ, Sharif becomes visibly angry, rants in Arabic and then appears to slap the woman. Translators claim he said:
“I told you I’d get to you afterwards! I just said that and you’re standing here. Put something in your brain!”

After the incident, Gawker reports that someone — possibly BBC reporter Emma Cook — sent a tweet that read, “Omar Sharif just hit a woman. Very stupidly, in front of a camera. #dohafilmfestival.”
Apparently, the message has been removed, but the following re-tweet seems to capture it and attribute it back to Cook:
Since the incident, Cook has been trying to step back the notion that Sharif “hit a woman.” Below, see her recent tweets:
But the Washington Post’s The Reliable Source blog seems to believe Sharif did, indeed, hit the woman. The WaPo’s “Roxanne and Amy” write:
The 1960’s screen heartthrob slapped a woman who was little too persistent in trying to get her photo taken with him at a Qatar film festival.
TMZ, too, says that a slap took place:
Sharif — who was nominated for an Oscar in 1962 for his role in “Lawrence of Arabia” — lashed out in Arabic … telling the woman to wait her turn … and then slapping her.
Regardless of whether it was an instance of purposeful hitting or an accidental shove, this incident is very literally “the slap heard round the world.” The perception of the incident, regardless of the reality behind it, isn‘t good for the actor’s image. Apparently, he has a history of not-so-non-violent conduct. Gawker reports:
Regardless of what happened in Doha, Sharif’s twilight years have been pretty violent: In 2003 he was convicted for headbutting a Parisian cop, and in 2008 he pleaded “no contest” to the misdemeanor battery of a Beverly Hills parking attendant. Then again, famed scholar Edward Said once said Sharif bullied him as a schoolboy.

Victims are often too embarrassed to call out the behavior, because they are conditioned to think they must be wrong, or somehow deserved the abuse. Throw in fame or celebrity, and victims really recoil. As for the press: they are just cowards and can’t even report the truth when they witness it themselves.

It looked like accidental contact to me. Celebrities are frequently mobbed by photographers and people wanting a picture or an autograph.

I can understand that sentiment. Male Muslims are not known for their gentleness. That said, however, I think this article is a little bit culturally biased. Hold on a sec….I’m not excusing their culture, and I’m certainly not excusing the hitting of a female for any reason. I greatly disdain the Islamist agenda, and I am not on their side. BUT…..this demonstration of male….hmmm….harshness, especially of an elderly man, is deemed as somewhat protective and grandfatherly in that culture. Notice her deference and apologetic smile. I have lived in the Middle East for years and speak Arabic. He was scolding her for her impatience, but was gracious to her when it was her turn. Strict? Perhaps. But the Blaze is making this out to be more than it is.

Nowadays we get so uptight about any physcal contact. I had a woman slap me in the face for telling an off color joke at her expense (I was young and stupid) and I deserved it. My mother would swat my hands (or bottom) if I was doing something stupid, and many elders believed they had the same privelege toward disrespctful younsters back in the day.
This was no big thing. Let’s not have a hissy fit.
