Watchdog: Investigate Google‘s ’Cozy’ Relationship With Obama Admin.

Is the Obama administration giving Google special access to a private NASA airstrip? Why hasn’t Google been sufficiently investigated for “spying” on people in over 30 countries?
Those are just a couple of questions the group Consumer Watchdog is asking in a new report calling for a congressional investigation into what it says is a “cozy” relationship between Google and the Obama administration.
In an open letter to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, the group calls for action and outlines suspicious activity between Google and several government agencies, including NASA and the National Security Agency (NSA).
For example, the group says Google has “unique access to Moffett Field near Google’s headquarters, where a fleet of jets and helicopters stands ready to serve Google executives.” While the company does pay for that access, Consumer Watchdog believes the fee may be below market value, and NASA has denied similar airport access to other companies, including a non-profit humanitarian group:
The letter further charges federal agencies have taken “insufficient” action in response to revelations last year that Google Street View cars collected data from open Wi-Fi connections they passed while snapping pictures in “more than 30 countries” (which the group calls the “Wi-Spy” debacle).
And that‘s all in addition to the potential conflict of interest when it comes to the company’s relationship with the NSA — the group says both Google and the NSA haven’t been open about what consumer information is shared when Google aids in investigations.
“I understand the NSA is a super-secret spook organization,” Consumer Watchdog’s John Simpson told PC World. “But given Google’s very special situation where it possesses so much personal data about people, I think that there ought to be a little more openness about what precisely goes on between the two.”
“We believe Google has inappropriately benefited from close ties to the administration,” the letter says. “Google is most consumers’ gateway to the Internet. Nonetheless, it should not get special treatment and access because of a special relationship with the administration.”
The letter concludes: “Our report only reveals only part of the picture. The House Oversight & Government Reform Committee has subpoena power if necessary. We urge you to use all the tools at the committee’s disposal to reveal the extent of Google’s influence on the government and how the Internet giant has unfairly benefited.”
To make its point, the group released a video satirizing what testimony from Google CEO Eric Schmidt might look like:
But getting actual testimony could be hard considering Schmidt’s relationship with the president. The CEO has announced he will be stepping down from Google, and some suspect the man who’s already an adviser to Obama could get a presidential appointment soon enough. John Dvorak over at Market Watch writes:
As head of the largest information-gathering operation in the world along with experience running a massive corporation, I foresee Schmidt as the eventual head of the Central Intelligence Agency or National Security Agency. Essentially that’s what he is now as CEO of Google.
Intelligence czar, anyone?
Details of the group’s accusations and questions can be found its 32-page report.
Is there another conflict of interest?
In response to Consumer Watchdog’s letter, a Google spokeswoman questioned the group’s objectivity to PC World.
“This is just the latest in a long list of press stunts from an organization that admits to working closely with our competitors,” said the unnamed spokeswoman, referring to accusations by some that the group itself has a cozy relationship with Google competitor Microsoft.
That notion was quickly denied by Consumer Watchdog’s John Simpson.
“We don’t have any relationship with Microsoft at all,” he told PC World. “We don’t take any of their money.”
The group calls itself “an effective voice for taxpayers and consumers in an era when special interests dominate public discourse, government and politics,” and boasts about taking on everything from insurance giants to oil companies.
It’s also not a conservative front taking a cheap shot at the president. The group was founded in 1985 by Harvey Rosenfield, a disciple of Ralph Nader who has blogged for the Huffington Post. His past stances and preference to be called a populist inch him more toward the left than the right (although he has rejected the tag “liberal lawyer”).
Still, others on the team could be considered progressives who have proudly worn the label “community organizer.”
So what’s the point of the letter and report?
“Google’s held itself to be the company that says its motto is, ‘don’t be evil,’ and they also advocate openness for everyone else,” Simpson told PC World. “We’re trying to hold them to their own word.”

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 4:24pmMy first overseas tour in the Army was at a electronic intelligence site back in 1970-71. I know what could be done back them and that is 40 yrs ago. The tech is light years beyond that. I know enough not to trust on-line banking, using a smart phone or cell phone to do banking on. People need to be more aware of what can be done to their electronic devices. If I want to do a internet search that I don’t want to have any records kept on. I use startingpage.com, it doesn’t kept a record of your search or anything connected to it. I would also advise people to watch a video on youtube how to bug your cell phone. Two of the most dangerous apps for smart phones are the one that allows you to deposit your check using your Iphone or smart phone. You are just putting your bank account number out in the open. The other one is the one that Government Motors is pushing where can used your Iphone or smart phone to open your car door do other with your car remotely. Average Americans have no knowledge of what can be done with electronic intercept devices. Ask the people in Huntington Beach, CA that had their credit card data stolen just by them using credit card terminals in a local grocery store. The thieves weren’t even in the store. We need to be more aware of what is going on around us.

They do not take checks or cash!! You should SEE the info they require just to file. I was shocked. They have every single possible piece of information on our small business and US personally that you could ever imagine! By the time we figured out that we HAD to do this, we already owed MA taxes on work done in their state. IF we did not file online and fill in ALL our business accounts info to PAY online, we would have gone to jail. MA is one of the worst states ever.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 4:12pmOk, I just want to give a quick criticism of their parody video: If you are worried that Google could access your WiFi network with their street view car, the solution is to put a password on the network. It’s no different than protecting your network from being accessed by joe schmoe passing through the neighborhood.
Google claims it was a bug in their programming, and that no information was stored. However, it’s being investigated in Germany (if my memory serves me) at the moment. So, we’ll see what comes of that.
As far as the airport access, it looks like Google got a contract to install collection data on their own planes in exchange for airport access. Which, sounds like a smart thing to do. NASA doesn’t need to buy planes just for data collection, probably doesn’t have to worry about maintenance costs, and doesn’t have to buy/consume fuel for the sole purpose of data collection.

Not necessarily the Obama administration per-se; they are more likely the eyes on us for them, the Homeland Security, the UN, the terrorists, and anyone else who is friends (supposedly) and enemies of the United States. God help us indeed if one or more powers, terrorist and/or government (foreign) team up for a multitude of attempted strikes upon us.
I realalistically could see such a scenario happening in which terror strikes, some success and others being stopped, occuring in time with cyber attacks bringing down part of the major utilities of the nation before some large event occurs.
Imagine if say Country A is preparing to assault and conquer part or all of Country B; they launch the above mention combo-attacks and all but cripple our response abilities; until we get it straightened out the ability to respond in force to the invasion would be limited.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 12:40amIf you are a ‘Bad Person’, or surf and read bad content that would interest Law enforcement, (( I‘m not talking about the occasional porn site’s we all visit when we’re horny, it’s only natural )) I’m talking about possibly destructive attitudes and evil intent, then Google is like a good Sheepdog, don’t you think?
Report Post »Good People have nothing to fear, and shows everyone, including Google, they can be trusted.
So if are really doing something wrong or have evil intent, then run away and try and hide in some other search engine, that may not protect you like Google… Want a Great privacy browser?…. Use what I use—-> Google Chrome, this browser has excellent security feature, especially against hacks, using keylogger type malware. I particularly like it because when I go on facebook, each comment box is secure, just like your password window, Go do your own homework, for a change.
Cheers. !!

Report Post »Do you not understand what is at issue here? Obviously not as your post suggests. Either you are a paid plant or your are totally ignorant of the world around you.
I think you are a plant.
We are not talking about those ‘terror cell boogiemen“ that Bush was describing when selling his unconstitutional ”Patriot Act”, we are talking about everyday citizens being singled out for referencing “Mein Komf” of some such thing. If you read your Constitution, you will see there is a placement of Amendments, the fourth of which prevents against “illegal search and seisure” which Google has so blatently violated and provided information for OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.
You had better wise up and tighten up, because soon you will get a knock on YOUR door.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 1:13amHawk, want me to tell you my “tell” that you are an operative? You used the old line “go do your own homework for a change” to degrade those who disagree with you as being ignorant rubes. Caught ya. Now go back to daddy soros for your further instructions you mindless sheep hack.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 3:20amNot real damn sure how constitutionally this can be done since it seems the free market hasn’t solved this, but health insurance and drug costs are way out or control. Can anyone tell me any diseases that have been cured since polio? No? Neither can I, because the profit is made throught “managed treatment” rather than ‘cure”. I am uber tea party conservative, but I am also against the ultra-profiteering capitalist mindset which seeks to put money over individual rights and liberties. Pharmisuticals regularly have 20% stock growth per year. Clue. Ask these tough questions for reform and don’t swallow the whole “health care reform” congress is trying to drive down our throats.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 5:55amGeneral Electric & Google. I find it amazing to watch the Obama Administration cozy up to these powerful corporations. What is their motivation? Is it campaign donations? Or could it be laying the framework towards a new world order?

Posted on January 28, 2011 at 10:55amEverybody should get rid of google anything on their computers. Eric Schmidt is a huge Dem, very progressive and a very cutting edge thinker with how technology affects our lives. He’s a willing participant in aiding this adminstration to exert control over the execution of their policy.

The ignorance of some folks! Anyone who can’t see we are rapidly approaching a police state is either ignorant of the facts or in denial – and to think some Neocons actually pretend like thier defending the Constitution by taking away our liberty! WAY TO GO! You & Alex keep up the good work, fellas!!!
