We are Free but Not Equal: Jesse Jackson Compares Occupy Wall Street to the Civil Rights Movement

Rev. Jesse Jackson joined the Occupy Atlanta protests this week and likened the ongoing demonstrations to the civil rights movement.

Speaking to protesters in a homeless shelter Thursday, he said the demonstrations that have spread across the country are an extension of the movement he helped lead.

“Do not let difficult times break your spirits,” Jackson said. “In all things, keep your eyes on the prize. Renew your faith, keep your hope alive and victory is assured.”

“Only when the foundation shakes does everybody make an adjustment,” he continued. “The people are saying we need economic justice, we need shared economic security. We are free but not equal.”

On Friday, Jackson was among a group of protesters that took over the lobby of SunTrust Plaza in downtown Atlanta for about an hour. According to the Associated Press, the group sang protest songs during the takeover.

The same day, Occupy Atlanta filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming it was arbitrary and unconstitutional for Mayor Kasim Reed to rescind his executive order allowing protesters to stay beyond Woodruff Park’s 11 p.m. closing time.

Reed revoked the order in late October, resulting in more than 50 arrests when demonstrators wouldn’t leave at closing time, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The group plans to reoccupy the park Saturday. As The Blaze reported, it denied a report that it had sought assistance from the Nation of Islam, led by Louis Farrakhan, to aid in their efforts.

“We have not asked the Nation of Islam to provide protection for us,” Tim Franzen, a spokesman for the group, told the Journal-Constitution. “If they show up it’s because they chose to be there, not because we invited them.”

Franzen said Occupy Atlanta is not affiliated with any outside groups, though sounded less certain than in his previous assertion.

“I don’t think the Nation of Islam is in any kind of agreement with [Occupy Atlanta],” he said.

Indeed, to Mr Jacksons way of ‘equality’ will happen only when he is ruling the nation and not in any other way.

It’s despicable when people use the name of God to pursue a false agenda of equality. Even the Father and the Son are not equal, and it is why people must go through the Son to get to the Father.

How can you argue with his statement? It is not in contravention with life in the real world. We are not equal. I accept that in all things I undertake in living my life. I don’t want equality, especially a fabricated equality.

When the left, in all settings around the world, and in all historical context, moves toward the idea of equality, it is always played out by others losing their freedoms and liberties.

Life is unfair. There is no point denying it. I can’t imagine a way to make life fair without depriving someone else. Whatever you have to offer the world, you got from your environment and those who influenced you: Culture is learned and shared. Those experiences, culture and values, are not the same for everyone. And how you CHOOSE to use those experiences will determine the outcome. In other words, you can’t manufacture fairness or equality.

However, you can be, do, and have anything you want when your willing to pay the cost of having it, or you can create a life story of unfairness and inequality. That’s the story that Progressive like. That’s the story that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton prefer.

The real question is, why do the Progressives USE this story against minorities? You know why!

If the OWS folks want to be my equal they can:

A: Take over my business and work 8:00 am – 7:00 pm six days a week.

B: Take everything I own and divide it amongst themselves.

Either way, they would still be as miserable as they are today.

With option A they would be adverse to working hard, paying bills, meeting payroll and paying taxes.

With option B they would come to the sad realization that the guy who was filling their trough has run out of slop.

Just one generation away from Martin Luther King Jr being forgotten and the Chinese statue for Michelle O changing history. All this and no protest. Just Jessie Jackson who could never be “equal” to MLK Jr. and he who will be an ash heap in the dustbin of history. And we bought into it as well when we gave up our money for a nice shiny credit card (just like the little old store charge the seeds pay later charge the seeds pay later). Will Durant(1885-1981) American psychologist, philosopher
“Nature smiles at the union of freedom and equality in our utopias.
For freedom and equality are sworn and everlasting enemies, and
when one prevails the other dies. Leave men free, and their natural
inequalities will multiply almost geometrically, as in England and
America in the nineteenth century under laissez-faire.
To check the growth of inequality, liberty must be sacrificed,
as in Russia after 1917. Even when repressed, inequality grows; only
    the man who is below the average in economic ability desires equality;
those who are conscious of superior ability desire freedom,
and in the end superior ability has its way.”

Correction: after a little more research into the timeline of the Civil Rights Movement–it appears I can’t totally rely on my memories from high school American History over twenty years ago–I don’t see any mention of bricks used on the “Bloody Sunday” or at any of the other marches or protests; only whips, nightclubs, tear-gas, fire-hoses, dogs, horses, etc. The point is that this is the sort of aggression that gave the Civil Rights Movement a real chance to become accepted as a legitimate cause in mainstream America. Why should anyone want to defile King’s legacy by turning the tables by promoting the actions and behaviors of a mob.

@TeaHugger: I wish I could agree. I really do. But in truth you have to have a measure of freedom and equality together. All freedom without civic and political equality would be anarchy mitigated by something resembling feudalism, and there can be no real civic or political equality if corporate entities are given the same status as individuals with regard to their freedom of speech and political action. All equality automatically negates freedom, since tyranny is always needed to enforce it, as the experience of Communist countries amply demonstrates. Why cannot otherwise sensible people see this?

he’s more relevant than i would like…he will manage to turn this into a civil war if he has his way… they didn’t ask the muslims to be there to protect them…..but if they show up…’IF THEY SHOW UP”…?
You know they are there and will be a larger part in coming days.
Obama needs to be called on the “carpet” for this whole thing. It is all him..he owns this crap and so do the people advocating it, the mayors , politicians etc
There is going to be more trouble with this ass hole in the picture. he sees himself as LMK of the 21st century…a little warped however..
When jesse and al are in the lime light…there is “no good” to be happening any where.

JJ is simply fighting to keep his relevance in Barry’s world by inserting himself back in.
      It’s his MO.

We are all equal in the eyes of God. On this earth the kind of equality that these delusional individuals think is attainable is, in fact, not.

This p.o.s. should not get any press coverage, except for his sex abuse cases.

Where do you believe, Jesse Jackson, that you’d be more free or more equal? Black Americans who follow you and your “victim” mentality have only themselves to blame for the sorry state they find themselves in. The Democrat Party has re-enslaved blacks of African decent who follow their edicts. Wake up, you’re in America. Sure there’s prejudice. There always has been and will be. Stop waiting for “perfection,” tell your people to FREE THEMSELVES OF THE BONDS OF VICTIMHOOD and start claiming their own American birthright……. Life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness!

Well put–except that to say the Democrats have “re-enslaved” blacks is stretching. Nor are the Democrats alone in their ability to get people to vote against their own interests. The Republicans do the same with white people.

Where would Old Jesse be right now if it had not been for slavery? Africa? Not that I ever supported slavery. But seriously, think about it for a minute. Regardless of how or why they came here at least they ended up in a country where they have freedom. Yes it took a long time for them to have equal rights but white people gave their support and worked with them to aid them in their journey. The discrimination they faced was deplorable and I am so sorry that anyone would be treated as such, but the majority of white people wish them no harm and want them to succeed. We hate what their ancestors had to go through. Yes, there is still racism within the white community but it is more prevalent nowadays within the black community against the whites, and you can thank Old Jesse, Al, and all the rest of the major black leaders for it. Including our president and his wife. I think that it is very sad that Obama wasted the perfect opportunity to unite the races but instead divided them and put the progress that has been made back to years before. Herman Cain was correct when he said that the blacks have been brainwashed. . Jesse wants to punish the white community of today for the slavery that was prior to the cival war. Has he forgotten those who fought against slavery that just happened to be white? Or the many whites that joined the cival rights movement on their behalf? What about that Jesse?
