TLC’s Duggar Family Criticized After Announcing 20th Child

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, an Arkansas couple who are the focus of TCL’s show “19 Kids and Counting,” are making headlines this week after making a starting announcement. The couple, infamous for their enormous family, is expecting their 20th child — a shocking revelation they made on Tuesday morning’s “Today” show.

Watch them discuss the pregnancy, below:

Michelle, who is 45, claims she’s in good physical shape and that she has no worries about the pregnancy. But two years ago, her 19th child was born with complications that ended up leading to pre-mature birth.

She waited to announce her current pregnancy until after she made it through her first trimester. ”We are so excited,” she says. “I was not thinking that God would give us another one, and we are just so grateful.”

The Duggars don’t use birth control, which explains the rapid growth and the massive size of their family. While they didn’t expect to be pregnant again, they are excited to prepare for the birth of yet another child.

When asked if this is their last and final child, the couple didn’t seem closed off to the possibility. “Well, I guess we’ll wait and see. We would love as many as the Lord sees fit to give us,” Michelle said.

Of course, there has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the family and its reproductive antics in the past. This announcement was no different. Following the news of the pregnancy, there were a variety of responses. Some called the decision to have another child idiotic, while others told critics that the family’s choices have no impact on others’ lives and that they should leave the family alone. The L.A. Times has more:

On Tuesday, tweets included the unkind variety –  “sick,“ ”stupid“ and ”out of control” — as well as the what-did-they-ever-do-to-you variety — “You are not impacted by them procreating.”  And then there was the innocuous: “Have they not run out of names starting with J?”  (The kids are: Joshua, Jana, John-David, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn-Grace and Josie.)

The Duggars have been criticized in the past for their opposition to birth control. As Christians, they claim that they decided to “give [the area of having children” up to the Lord.” Thus, they have essentially relied on prayer and have declined to purposefully prevent pregnancy. Below, see Michelle and Jim Bob discussing parenthood, birth control and more:

Looks like the show will have to be renamed to “20 Kids and Counting.”

I admire this family. Children are our future and the meaning of our lives and culture. If more responsible Americans don’t start having more babies and not worrying about cost and material items in their life, we will be a culture of the past. Do you realize how many babies the middle eastern culture are having in relation to Americans or how about the Mexican culture? Do you think they haven’t thought about eventually out- numbering American. Think again!!! Eyes wide open morons of America. The Duggars are true American pioneers and exactly the American family that our founders fought for. God Bless Them!

Amen to that! I come from a family that’s one generation removed from 10 siblings. Several aunts and uncles have 6 or more.

      I know big families.

      I understand big families.

That said, the most I ever wanted to have is 3. Nothing normal comes out of families that big.

Why do you say nothing normal comes out of big families? I know many families with 7-9 kids that are perfectly normal in my opinion. Perhaps the question is personal preference and what you ‘deem’ normal?

my mom has know the Duggar family for YEARS, and they take absolutely no money from the government and never would. they are a strong Christian family and believe in making you own way. their children are raised on the value of hard work and honoring God. something this nation is SORELY lacking and needs more of. a tremendous example of how the American family strengthens character, morals and a relationship with God.

I know a family of 8 that went through a divorce. Irreconcilable differences. Divorce in that big of a family hits hard.

The Duggars are happy to be this big, and for them, it works. They aren’t a drain on society but an example that having a large family can work if you desire to have one that big. It takes one serious commitment with your partner.

Good luck with the Duggars, thanks for the great recipes ;) http://bit.ly/rxWvBZ

The Duggars are self sufficient…they‘re not the dole like some Americans and dealing drugs while daddy’s in jail…

If they want 40 kids…it is their business. They have a beautiful home. I don’t know how the girls feel about all the baby sitting they do…but on tv they alllllllll appear to be happy, and their christian faith is paramount in their life.

HOWEVER….MAMA IS OVER 40…If the next child has the problems the last one did…they really need to reevaluate having more babies. Just hang up the uterus and walk away….just my opinion…

POINT BEING…THEY ARE NOT ON THE GOVERNMENT ROLLS, ARE SELF SUFFICIENT AND APPEAR TO BE HAPPY…

I agree! I, as considered today, am “old” but I know that the families of six to twelve children were not uncommun years ago, society found nothing unusal about it. Today we, be it primarilary because of monetary interests, have shortened our family interests and in doing so have put us in a degeneratative class of citizens. We will be the majority.

No goverment dole….have all you want. Homeschool if your smart,,,, ( There was 9 of us and we went to private and home school, plus paid school taxes for public school), because thats the way our system works……we paid our ‘Fair share’.

I have close to 30 nieces and nephews. Oldest sister adopted four siblings from.
.a Russian mother. dumping her children on the Soviet system (to keep them as a family) in addition to the three of her own. Not one dime of of public funds.Oldest is a Med School grad, the rest are in college or going next year.
Another sister has 8 children, Oldest is in college, Homeschools the rest and does triathilons on the side.

This is only two out of six….plus the two Brothers….
This can go on and on……..

I personally think they have ‘overdone’ it, but it’s none of my business! They have children that have morals, respect for their elders, empathy for those less fortunate, and not one of the older ones is marching terrorizing and destroying the town where they live like too many self absorbed, over indulged idiots that we see on TV. Maybe if they had been brought up like the Duggar children, they would not be doing what they are doing today. I just pray that this new little one doesn’t have to go through what little Josie did 2 years ago. She still appears to be very tiny for her age, and not quite up to par for her age. But then, I’m not sure exactly how old she was when the last show was filmed. At any rate, all of the Duggar offspring certainly look healthy, happy, well educated (by mom yet!), very musically talented, and good Christian young people. More power to them!!

Anyone who has a problem with this family needs to take a look around them, to include looking at their debt load. Did anyone have a problem with you procreating? Or how many you chose to have? Or how much money (you don’t have) you choose to spend? Until you get your own house in order, keep your nose out of someone else’s, especially when they have their house in very good order. Actually, they are paid by TLC, but they also own several car dealerships, have rental property and at one time sold real estate. They have a garden, they can much of their own foood, they buy in bulk, they buy used. They home school and all of their children play at least one musical instrument when they are old enough. Yes, the older children help care for the younger children, but that has always been the case in American families until the last two MEMEMEME generations came along. They are not going to be in trouble if their who is cancelled.

Today’s children are too busy having their own children so they can get onto the public dole and out of their parents house, believing that will bring them happiness. Instead it ruins their lives.

I would rather see a couple that has kids and raises them to be self sufficient than to see some low fife breed Government teat suckers that I support with my tax dollars.

If they can afford it, I say more power to them. If not, they should be sterilized. I am sick of the welfare state and the mentality it brings.

Exactly. The point here is this family is in the same room together. There are fathers out in our society unknown who have sired 20 or more kids all on the government dole but they don‘t know who they are and don’t care a wit about the children. You’ll not say that with these folks. If this world needs anything, it needs more Americans like this gang.

The parents homeschool their children and probably do a much better job than the public schools. By the way, their tax dollars are paying for those public schools that they do not use. Check out this link to see how organized they are with the homeschooling:

If you had time lapse, sped up video of all of the deliveries alone, you could add Monty Python music and have a winning clown car type gag.

Maybe they’re trying to counter-balance the illegal population coming into the country?!

I don’t think even they can do that, but good luck!

I would rather have the Duggar children around my kids any day over the self-absorbed, bratty, disrespectful, “give me” everything, I hate you when I don‘t get my way kids I’ve seen at my daughter’s school or on her teams. And they are only one of two or three children households!

Over population is such a myth. All of the people in the world would fit into one town in Florida. Not too comfortably I must say, but nonetheless, these beautiful people have a wonderful family and no one should say a thing about it. They are self-supporting, teaching morals and good family values. Working in medicine, I have seen a welfare mom with 23 children, all with different last names. The Duggars pay their own way completely and their homeschooling is great.

Overpopulation as in, we don’t have enough people in my generation that are having kids and hence Social Security, the TSA and thousands of other pensions/ponzi’s are going broke..

I’ll keep hitting the wife (figuratively of course) so long as Libtardia still exists. I figure we might as well have fun breeding them out…Lord knows, they don’t want kids..none of the post Christian movement wants kids, they‘re too f’n selfish!

Theres no way they are paying to raise those kids themselves. at a cost of approx 255k a child to get them from the womb thru school that adds up to 5.1 million dollars. Dont get me wrong but they dont look like rocket scientists. So my point is I really dont want my tax payer dollars going to pay for their stupidity.

The husband does well. They built their own house(which is massive) and doesn’t appear to be money from the show since they built it early on when the show premiered. My wife watches their show, I just don’t find it entertaining. However, I can safely say they get no more or less than anybody else who is responsible in America. The way they live doesn’t resemble the typical teat sucking welfare recipient.

Your tax money is already going for other people’s stupidity. This family is the opposite. Watch their show. This family is raising 20 kids to know God, be thrifty, share, work to support yourself, separate needs from wants, prioritize, work together, learn from eachother, be resourceful. Their kids will grow up to be responsible, business owners and tax paying citizens.

They are indeed paying for all their kids. Both are licensed commercial real estate brokers and Jim Bob served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 and was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2002. They also host Financial freedom seminars, not to mention the show they are on. This is no Octo Mom story here. I say have 30 kids if you can afford to pay for them who am I to judge.

If I remember correctly, the dad is a self employed business man, the mom stays home. They live within their means and do for themselves what they can, such as building their house (I believe it took them 3 years). The girls sew, and they garden etc. The kids don’t have all the gadgets most kids have. As far as I know, they do not take any government support. I like this family. Fame is not important and has not ruined their family. If every family took parenting as seriously as these parents, our society would be a much better place.

It seems that you are another example of one who delights in opening their mouth in ignorance of the facts. This family is self reliant and does not need outside help including the income from TLC. God takes care of them as long as they walk in the Light of His Word. Psa_127:3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. What a wonderful example for us all. Thank you Duggers for your faithfulness!!!

That is the average cost of raising a child… not what it costs all families.

That would cost $12500 per child per year. Do you think a family with two kids making $25000/year spends 100% of their income on their children? No they don’t. They buy used clothing, hand down toys, etc. That makes it less expensive.

Look into the assumptions of that statistic before you parade your ignorance. Guess what, some cruel parents like me have only bought their kid three toys. Old coffee cans and plastic containers usually end up being the favorite anyway. Also, some of us think that our kids should pay for their own college, so they actually put in some effort and learn from it. Subtract college costs and brand new furniture for each kid, and that cost per child goes way down. In addition, homeschooling families save tons of money by not purchasing the latest fashion for school clothes every year. Siblings tend not to care if you wear the same 3 outfits till they are too small or totally worn out.
