‘We Can Turn This Thing Around’: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan Talk Jobs, Economy, and Campaigning in First Joint Interview

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan gave their first joint interview to 60 Minutes Sunday, where the two discussed how they chose to be running mates, the campaign, and issues like the budget and entitlement reform.
Though there are those on both sides who will be critical of everything done by the political opposition, it seems as though the interview passed without any significant “gaffes” or errors.
Paul Ryan began on a positive note, saying: “It took a little while to sink in…but to see all Americans coming out to these rallies, hungry for solutions, hungry for people to provide leadership to get people on the right track– I’m very excited about this, and I think we can turn this thing around.”
Watch the interview, via CBS:
At one point, Bob Schieffer said he was putting Paul Ryan “on the spot” by asking about Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital.
Ryan responded by going on the offensive: “What I see happening is, the president has a terrible record, so he can’t run on that…He’s going to try to run on distractions…and that’s why [there are] these attacks against a record that is outstanding. It’s a record of creating businesses and turning around struggling businesses. That’s what we want to see happening throughout the country.”
The group also discussed the concept of “fairness” in politics, and how under President Obama it seems that the government is in the business of picking winners and losers.
Schieffer took the concept in another direction, asking whether “fairness dictates” that the wealthiest should pay the lowest taxes.
“That’s what happening many times,” the host asserted.
After Romney noted that the wealthy pay the largest share of taxes, Ryan elaborated: “What we’re saying is take away the tax shelters that are uniquely enjoyed by people in the top tax brackets, so they can’t shelter as much money from taxation, so we can lower tax rates for everybody to make America more competitive.”

I found Romney a tough pill to swallow.

Obama started an unconstitutional war, and Romney is going to continue it.
Romney believes in the distinctly Marxist graduated income tax.
Paul Ryan believes in the Hoover Myth, which is the belief that the reason we had such a long Great Depression is because of Hoover’s free-market policies, and that what we needed was government to help keep the crash from happening – WHICH IS WHY HE SUPPORTED TARP! When he refers to “this is a Hoover moment” in the following video, that’s what he means by that term.

“First of all, let‘s go back to Krugman’s discussion of Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and his infamous advice about liquidation. To his credit, Krugman acknowledges that this quote comes from Hoover’s own memoirs, written well after the fact. But to his discredit, Krugman fails to notify us that on the very next page of Hoover’s memoirs, after he explains the liquidationist advice he got from his treasury secretary, Hoover wrote,
“”But other members of the Administration, also having economic responsibilities — Under Secretary of the Treasury Mills, Governor Young of the Reserve Board, Secretary of Commerce Lamont and Secretary of Agriculture Hyde — believed with me that we should use the powers of government to cushion the situation.[2]”

Posted on August 13, 2012 at 1:01am@therealconservative,
And the reason the depression of 1920 was over pretty quick was because government wasn’t trying to help the economy from crashing.
The crash is NECESSARY. Without a crash, the malinvestments which were made due to prior government interventions won’t be cleared, and there can’t be a recovery.
Prices must fall in a crash, and unsustainable projects must be sold off at a loss (because their current prices are artificially high due to artificial credit expansion), and the factors of production must be reallocated according to free market principles so they can be put to net productive use.
Yes, people will lose their jobs, businesses, and homes, but those were artificially stimulated projects that, without the prior artificial credit expansion, wouldn’t have been created to begin with.
So, do we leave people out in the cold? No, you get the government out of the housing market so that competition can drive prices down for the consumer.
See here.
Defending the Undefendable (Chapter 20: The Slumlord) by Walter Block
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhURIycWHRI
Government can’t help in a depression because it was an abandonment of free market principles that sowed the inflationary seeds of the depression, to begin with.
More stimulus will result in price inflation and prolonged depressions, as well as continual growth of government tyranny which is required to keep free market forces from lowering prices.

“… good research on your part. have to assume that ryan knows more than you but you really lose all cred when quoting paul krugman.”
I didn’t quote Paul Krugman. I quoted someone CRITIQUING Paul Krugman.
And while Milton Friedman had some good free market beliefs, his monetary theory was extremely dangerous.
Milton friedman believed – like Ryan and Krugman do – that the Fed didn’t intervene enough to stop the Great Depression. But what in fact happened is that the Fed CAUSED the inflationary boom that was necessarily followed by a crash.
So the Fed was actually the cause of the Great Depression, which is why Hoover‘s and FDR’s interventionism after the crash made it worse.
And, likewise, TARP is the reason we’re still in a recession. The malinvestments weren’t allowed to clear, and the longer we put it off, the greater the economic destruction will be when it finally happens through free market forces.
The crash is coming no matter what. Paul Ryan made the coming crash worse that it had to be by supporting TARP.
And you can bet that if we get Romney/Ryan, and when the crash occurs likely under the next President’s term, that Mr. “I think Bernanke is doing a fine job” Romney and Mr. “This is a Hoover moment” Ryan will follow Krugman and Friedman’s advice.
On Friedman’s monetary theory, see here.

“Somebody along the lines, invested in roads and bridges, if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”
Meaning that the companies who use the roads, bridges, internet, didn’t build those.
It would make no sense for him to say, “if you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.” He’s clearly talking about the roads and bridges.

That we’ve all had help, from parents, teachers and even government.
I don’t see companies rejecting government backed loans
I don’t see farmers rejecting subsidies
Mitt Romney is essentially Barack Obama.

Wait, is this another religious tactic?
Just keep telling someone they’re worthless, their life is meaningless and they’re so depressed that they need God?
Both sides lie in their campaign ads
Both sides fudge the number when their in office, and then accuse the other party in office of fudging numbers
Both sides are hypocrites.
Both sides of the media aisle cut clip offs and take them out of context.
The only thing we can do is choose not to take everything as gospel and not assume that because the person making the claim is a Republican/Democrat, that they are right or aren’t deceiving us for their own gain.

Posted on August 13, 2012 at 12:22amMODERATION- We all know what he meant. You said:
” He’s clearly talking about the roads and bridges.”
Since you are the one trying to change the context, what about the roads and bridges? What did he really mean? He could always clarify his remarks, but he won’t. He’ll wear it until Nov. 6th.
I watched the link. That was a pretty good speech! He did not use it out of context, though. He sets it up in the first 30 seconds. Dead on. I’m starting to like this guy.

The problem is, the Liberals can and always do, say whatever they damn well please. The Left will and have, gone to all lengths to get political power, while Conservatives just acquieced and said please and thank you “distinguished fellow collegue”. Posted on August 12, 2012 at 9:49pmI just watched the Paul Ryan “Homecoming” with Mitt Romney in Wisconsin on Fox News Channel. It was powerful and moving. I have never seen Romney so animated as he was tonight at that rally. I believe Ryan has added the spark that was missing from the Romney campaign. It’s as if they “complete” one another and compliment one another in an energizing and uplifting way. It seems that Romney has finally found his “outside”, big-boy voice, speaking with a force and power, that up until now, seemed to be missing. He truely hit his stride with sharp digs at the Obama campaign, but particularly showed his more humane and softer side while telling a story about the Olympic speed skater from 2002. Both men took the stage with confidence and determination to bring America back from the precipice. I pray they are successful.
