‘We Don’t Pray on Sidelines’: Ravens Player Slams Tebow‘s ’Need’ for God on the Football Field

Terrell Suggs Slams Tim Tebow & His Need for God & Prayer on the Field

Terrell Suggs

On Tuesday morning, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs appeared on ESPN’s “First Take,” where he unleashed a rant against Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

While Suggs‘ comments didn’t involve any references to Tebowing (or Treebowing, for that matter), they did invoke mentions of Tebow’s faith in the Almighty as well as his ability to perform well on the football field.

Yardbarker.com has more:

The Baltimore Ravens clinched the 2nd seed in the AFC with their victory over the Cincinatti Bengals on Sunday afternoon. However, even during a bye week, and not yet knowing who his team will face in Baltimore in 2 weeks, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs wasted little time taking shots at Denver Broncos quarterback, Tim Tebow. [...]

The Denver Broncos clinched the 4 seed by winning the AFC West championship despite falling at home to Kansas City because the Oakland Raiders lost their final game to San Diego.

“When we play Raven football, it’s scary,” Suggs said during the interview. Then, he went on to claim that his team doesn‘t necessarily need God’s assistance on the sidelines.

“With all due respect, we don’t pray on sidelines. I mean we do — we give it up to God just to be safe…we gonna go out there and win that game,” he said. “We don’t need our kicker to make a 62-yarder. I‘m just sayin’. I’m just sayin.”

Terrell Suggs Slams Tim Tebow & His Need for God & Prayer on the Field

These passive-aggressive attacks on Tebow and his reliance upon God went on throughout a solid portion of the interview, with the Ravens linebacker going on to say that his team’s quarterback knows how “to go and win games.”

“Our quarterback — when our quarterback prays he be like ‘You know what guys — you sit on your couch and enjoy this. Thank you for blessing me…letting me wake up to play this game. I’m gonna impress you,’” he proclaimed.

Terrell Suggs Slams Tim Tebow & His Need for God & Prayer on the Field

Toward the end of the interview, Suggs swung even harder as he concluded his statements about Tebow and the Broncos.

“Once again, God had to save Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos,” he ranted. “Like I said, they didn’t win — it’s simple. You win, you’re division champs. He couldn’t even give them two drives. They lost 7-3. Two drives gets them 9-7.”

You can listen to the entire ESPN interview here (at the 57:00 mark).

Editor’s Note: During his ESPN interview, Suggs said, “…we don’t pray on sidelines.” In covering this story, Yahoo! News’ “Shutdown Corner,” the Huffington Post and others have misquoted him as saying “we don’t need God on our sidelines.” This is incorrect. The Blaze has transcribed Suggs’ quotes verbatim in the above article.

      Tim Tebow is super, but he can’t get the Broncos past the STEELERS. Can’t wait to get the Baltimore Crows again. They were lucky twice during the regular season because of injuries to Steelers, but that isn’t going to happen again. GO STEELERS.

      I still don’t get it… what’s the big deal? So what, Tebow prays… my goodness, maybe they should get on Johnson’s case or whomever for being poor examples. Doing drugs and starting trouble. All Tebow does is pray, big deal.

      But then again, the more these dopes open their mouths the more people become interested and jump on the Tebow bandwagon. The NFL must secretly love this guy!!!
      Kind of like in 2008 when people were running out and buying guns and ammo. The MSM media tried to paint them as crazy red necks. However, it backfired on them and more people searched why, how, etc and got people reading the Constitution. Maybe Tebow will have this affect on people finding out about God…who know.

      No worries, Pittsburgh will smash him in the mouth when after we are through with Denver. No offence to Tebow,may God bless him but football is religion here in Steeler Country.
      As a second point, How is it that Tebow finds it ok to “Work” on Sunday anyways ? A devout Christian, according to the bible, should rest and reserve the day for the lord. Am I correct ? I was always bothered by the upper class of the church who found it perfectly ok if they had to work being they were a doctor, surgeon or CEO, but when I had to work on a Sunday, being I am only a lowly plumber, I always heard it from people about working and missing church.
      It matters not, I have been done with man made religion for some time. I lay my life before the lord, I pray for the spirit to guide and direct my days, I abstain from activities that take away from the spirit. I feel very close to my lord and have an intimate relations through the gift of the spirit. I follow the teaching of Jesus Christ and do the best I can to always help and serve others. I am secure in my faith!

He seems to have brought something to the Broncos that they needed at this point. What is Tebow praying for before a game? Anyone? It gives the appearance that it is being done for selfish or attention-getting reasons or to agitate others. Tebow is making prayer look cheap and tawdry. Even you zealots prove this point by the verbal attacks you make on anyone that questions Tebow’s motives.

      5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
      6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
      7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
      8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

      At least with football, you get penalized or ejected when you get involved in a fight. Also, no one ever says that they went to a fight and a football game breaks out, do they? And in what sport can you count the number of years played by the number of missing teeth: baseball or hockey?

      Hockey is just as or even more of a violent sport then the others… so how does the morals thing fit in here?

      That Terrrell commented at all on someone else‘s Christian faith in God in a negative way reveals what’s in his heart, pure and simple. If you’re praying for anything other than safety for all ther players on the field and the chance to perform with all your God given talents to the best of your ability, your prayers are in error in my opinion (concerning sports). After all one of the ten commandments is to, “Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy”. All these football players play on the Sabbath so I would say, as a Christian you should follow the commandments of God first, and then figure out when to pray and where it’s appropriate.

      Although I agree with you in that your right about what Jesus said considering Pharisees. You must take in account the times and context. At the time of Jesus being “HOLY” was the IN thing to do. Everybody was always trying to out HOLY each other. Jewish traditions took over and added to the law. So the way to power and riches was to be legalistic and pious. Additionally the Pharisees believed God was “with” you only if you where rich. Thats why Jesus intentionally ministered to the poor.

      Can people please stop quoting the Matthew 6 passage about praying in secret. These words of Jesus came during the sermon on the mount and He was specifically targeting the practice of the Pharisees to seek attention as they gave alms, prayed, and fasted. These activities which should draw a person into a relationship with the Lord were done by Pharisees with the motivation of making themselves look good in front of other people. Thus, the command to them to be private in giving, praying, and fasting.

      TT is not attracting attention to himself. The media has sought him out as he prays. Tebow has continually pointed people to the Lord and not himself when asked.

      Plus, the apostle Paul tells believers in Ephesians 6:18 — “With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, . . .”

      I would respectfully disagree… Jesus was giving an example of what not to do, the Pharisees just happened to be the ones doing it. God’s Word is eternal and anyone, anytime, and anyplace that reads the Word is called to do as Jesus instructed; that being to do it privately.
      Ephesians 6:18 …. can you not pray ” in you’re spirit” to the LORD in a crowd silently without anyone ever knowing it … this is how the LORD would have us do it … that way he does get ALL the glory. The way Tebow is doing it does in fact bring ATTENTION to HIM. If not we would not be taking about HIM. Example … Tebowing = praying… sorry, I don’t tebow!
      I can give a 100 dollors to 10,000 people.. this is 1 million total, and with every 100 dollar donation pray that God use that money for His glory and never tell one soul … in that act of COMPLETE humility and silence God can do miracles that even I will not know of until eternity.

      4truth your simplistic view of interpretation is noted.

      It is true the word is to everyone at all times. But to interpret one needs to first discover the primary audience and the principle being taught to that person/audience. The counsel to the Pharisees as leaders is clear. Their entire motive was to demonstrate the religious vocation, impress those who saw them, and intimidate the average, every day believer. I highly doubt Tebow has any of these motives, and is not drawing attention to himself. You are just wrong. What labels others put upon his praying is not his concern.

      So all the non-Godly have to do is label Christian works of any kind, and then Christians are no longer obligated to follow God in public.

      Psalm 150:1
      Praise the LORD!
      Praise God in His sanctuary;
      Praise Him in His mighty expanse.

      the mighty expanse is out in the open. So we praise Him in the sanctuary and out in the open

      I would be of the opinion that many “complicate” what is simple, but I do agree with you that we need to keep things in context.
      I agree that the Pharisees paraded THEMSELVES (scripture SIMPLY tells us this) and would also agree that Tebow’s heart is most likely not the same. I have not seen any of it and do not speak ill of him personally, and am actually routing for him.
      As far as Psalm 150.. I at no point was/ would speak against that.
      The non- believer does not judge us… again I agree.
      If God in heaven says to Tebow…that a-boy son, who am I to say otherwise. On that I also agree.

      Sorry only white people can be racist! After all they are the only race in the history of the world to have owned slaves at one time in their past. I figure since the left likes to rewrite history I will help. Africans, Persians, Italians, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russians, Dutch, and so on NEVER owned slaves….ONLY WHITE AMERICANS! Therefore only they can be racists. If you keep people ignorant of history you can make them fools and then they will believe anything!

      Then you need to turn your back on this organization (the Ravens Football Corporation) since every time you buy a ticket to one of their games you are subsidizing this fool. Every time you pay taxes in Baltimore you are subsidizing this fool (football corporations are partially subsidized by the cities they inhabit…it’s blackmail used to keep the team there).

      So why do you love the Ravens? Have they done you any favors? Have they benefitted your life over and beyond a small measure of entertainment value? It makes no sense that a person should “love” a corporation that can’t exist without massive amounts of tax money given them to keep a corporate team in a city for any length of time. Take away that tax money and they’ll leave in a heartbeat and change their name so that some other city can “love their team”. The Ravens don’t love you! They only want your money!

      P.S. You do show a good historical point. Did you know that FREE BLACKS in the South prior to the War of Norther Aggression OWNED SLAVES TOO???? Tell that to some of your progressive black friends and see what happens!

      C. Schweh: I guess I should clarify, don’t confuse my love for the game of football and my love for the Baltimore Ravens to mean that I worship them. I do not! I have friends that do though. I do not and will not pay a fortune to see one of their games in the stadium. I do not spend exuberant amounts of my hard earned money for shirts, hats, gloves, autographed pictures, pencils, pens, lamp shades and so on, I am sure you get my point. I do own some Ravens items but not many. My love is for the game and because I live near Baltimore that is the team I want to see win. I completely agree with your statement about the team being subsidized with taxpayer money. I am against ALL forms of welfare, for the rich, the poor, the lazy and the old. That may sound harsh to some but I think we should only support veterans, mentally disabled and physically disabled citizens of America! FAT is not a disability, it is a choice! Sorry, the rest of you get a job or create one. It must be hard to even live in this world for you because everything is subsidized by taxpayer money and you can thank those Democrats and Republicans everyone loves so much. I digress…. I did know that fact about free blacks in the south; don’t tell your friends about the all black regiments that fought for the South either that will blow their mind! History is a terrible thing to waste.

They could be a redneck ******* but they could also be a left wing OWS’er posting on this site to make people like you go “look at them tea party people they is racist.” Secondly what does Tebow being broke have to do with anything? Is that your reference about God not existing or caring? If so, then I say you are a fool because God is not worried about what material things you have or don’t have in this world, he doesn’t care if you have the new OLED TV or a big house. He is concerned with where your soul will spend eternity! God gives us the FREEDOM AND LIBERTY to choose our own path in life and hell will be the biggest testament to the fact that God is FREEDOM AND LIBERTY! If you were not saying that then I guess my font on my screen lead me wrong as well.

      @Godfather1 ~ You’ve been duped, brainwashed, taken advantage of, etc., etc.. You really think because someone makes fun of a supposed college graduate who speaks like a ghetto thug that that constitutes ‘racism’? You have no idea what racism is my friend. When you hate a race enough to try to eradicate or subjugate that race (like Hitler for instance), that’s TRUE racism! Also to discriminate is NOT racist either, we discrimniate every day in our choices, what we like or dislike based on our OWN opinions. Because someone doesn’t want to associate with a particular group of people due to their actions, words, or even thoughts is not racist whether that group is of one ethnicity or not. Now if you group ALL of that ethnicity to that particular group and deem them ALL like that, guess what…that’s not racism either, that’s just being bigoted. You must first understand what racism means before you throw out your accusations that someone is one, otherwise that makes YOU a bigot, not a racist.

      Yes, Bill Maher is also mocking Tebow, but apparently you must not be looking at the comments on the Maher article or the comments on this page. There is a marked difference; one is full of racism, the other is not. So, yes it is race specific. No one is saying Maher is a native who dances after killing a monkey or that he has Jordan’s and a crack pipe.

      @robinakilt

      I said the thing about Tebow going broke only as a response to another commenter who said Suggs will soon be a homeless bum. There is no reason either will be broke after their careers are over.

      @smackdown33

      No you can’t, because Suggs didn’t bring race into it. Only people on this site brought race into it. If Tebow were black ther is nothing to suggest Suggs wouldn’t have made the same comments. However, if Suggs were white, there is no question people here wouldn’t be making the same comments infused with racism. Don’t believe me, just look at the comments on the story about Maher mocking Tebow – no racism.

      It doesn‘t matter if you’re red, white, blue or green, it’s the attitude some of these people exhibit that I hate. It‘s the people who keep bringing up race that’s caused this Country so much trouble.

      If it isn‘t race it’s something else that’s hurtful, and I have experienced it. As a very young child we moved from the South to the West Coast. We were teased constantly about our accent, we were called Okies or Arkies and worse. And yes, it’s stayed with me all my life.

      So, I think people pick on others in many hurtful ways, not just race alone. Most of all, I’m tired of people who like to use the word Racism to create more hurtful feelings. Let it alone for goodness sake.

He was raised on a pastor’s/missionary‘s income and frugality was the middle name in his family’s life and probably still is. He will continue his family’s work in the Phillipines and all will be fine. Suggs may be better at what he does right now on the field, but if he has to slam Tebow, there must be something missing in his life. What was the point?

      @KEN2

      If you look at Tebow’s stats since he has been in the NFL, they are horrible. Yes he is a starting quarterback in the NFL and his team is in the playoffs. However, they are 8-8 and are only in the playoffs because their division is the worst in the NFL. As far as him winning Heismans, they are plenty of athletes who were great in college but just can’t compete at the professional level. Charlie Ward is an example. He was the Heisman but wasn’t even drafted. There is a good chance Tebow will not be the starting quarterback next year. I personally have nothing against Tebow being Christian and being open about his faith. I am merely saying he really isn’t that good.

      Saying that Suggs sounds uneducated or anything in that vein is one thing, but no one can honestly say that many of the comments on here don’t cross the line into being racist. Further, I am not saying that all tea partyers are racists. Rather, I am merely saying that comments like the racist ones on this site sure don’t show tea partyers as being all accepting.

      Your comments about Maher are fair if that is what you believe, but you will also see that they have nothing to do with his race. Unfortunately, many other commenters here cannot limit their disapproval of Suggs comments to its content and have to bring race into it.

    Maybe you don’t “need” God on the playing field, but let me know how you feel when the bullets start flying on the battlefield, and you stand the chance of meeting Him.

    i think tebow’s need for God is for his entire or whole life on or off the football field. tebow is not the only one who needs God in his life we all do. some just think all will be well without God. maybe.
